Passive acoustics also offers a low impact method for environmental surveying, and is not limited to good weather or daylight hours, making it ideal for monitoring vulnerable marine animals and ecosystems. Recent, global advances in seafloor fiber-optic cables, distributed acoustic systems, surface buoys and uncrewed vehicles, coupled with developments in artificial intelligence, offer an exciting future of near-real-time evaluation of underwater soundscapes to address important environmental issues of our time. Examples of emerging underwater passive acoustic research initiatives include: offshore renewable energy, soundscape modification in support of habitat restoration, shipping and impacts of other anthropogenic sources of sound, ocean climate change impacts on marine species distributions, ocean acidification verification, and ice shelf instability for potential impact on global sea level rise.
