Job Description/Position Function: We seek applicants for the newly endowed Christopher W. Clark Postdoctoral Fellowship in Conservation Bioacoustics. The fellowship award supports the incumbent in pursuing cutting-edge scholarship while fostering intellectual interaction among Lab programs and Cornell scholars. New paper on sperm whales in the Ross Sea

Hi My coauthor and myself would like to share with the MARMAM community a recent publication in Frontiers in Remote Sensing about sperm whales in the Ross Sea. TITLE: Sperm whales forage year-round in the Ross sea region ABSTRACT: We investigated the seasonal and spatial occurrence of sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) in the Ross Sea region of the Southern Ocean derived from passive acoustic data. Two Autonomous Multichannel Acoustic Recorders (AMARs) moored about 10 m above the seabed were deployed in the austral summer of 2018 and recovered 1 year later. The northern AMAR (A3) was located on the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge at 63.7°S and the southern AMAR (A1) at 73.1°S on the Iselin Bank, part of the continental slope of the Ross Sea. Sperm whale echolocation signals were detected using signal processing scripts and validated by visual inspection of spectrograms. Our results demonstrate that sperm whales are present in the Ross Sea region year-round. At A1, sperm whale vocalisations were detected in every month between February and November, but absent in December and January. Whales were detected most often in February with an average of 0.310 detections per hour. Sperm whale vocalisations were detected at station A3 in every month except February when we had no observations. Our results contrast to a paucity of reported sightings of sperm whales from fishing and research vessels in the Ross Sea region between December and February. Probabilities of detecting sperm whales at A3 were on average 14.2 times higher than at A1 for the same month and monthly mean detections per hour were an average of 74.4 times higher at A3 than A1. At A1, we found a significant preference for day-time foraging rather than during the night or nautical twilight. In contrast, at A3, no clear day/dusk/night/dawn differences in sperm whale occurrence were found. Low sea-ice concentration (< 80%) and open water within ∼50 km were necessary but not sufficient conditions for higher detection rates of sperm whales (>0.1 detections per hour). Overall, our research provides baseline information on sperm whale occurrence and establishes a method to track long-term change to help evaluate the conservation value of the Ross Sea region Marine Protected Area. Proposed Rule for the Taking of Marine Mammals Incidental to the Construction of the Empire Wind Facility Offshore of New York

NOAA Fisheries has received a request for five-year Incidental Take Regulations and an associated Letter of Authorization from Empire Offshore Wind, LLC (Empire Wind), a 50/50 joint venture between Equinor and BP p.l.c., for the incidental take of small numbers of marine mammals during the construction of the Empire Wind offshore wind energy facility in a designated lease area on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS-A-0512) offshore of New York. The requested regulations would govern the authorization of take, by both Level A and Level B harassment, of small numbers of marine mammals over a 5-year period incidental to construction-related pile driving activities (impact and vibratory), and high-resolution geophysical (HRG) site characterization surveys conducted by Empire Wind in waters off of New York. These regulations propose to authorize the take of individuals by Level B harassment and, for some species, by Level A harassment incidental to the construction activities previously described. No mortality or serious injury is expected or proposed to be authorized. NOAA Fisheries’ proposed regulations would require mitigation measures that are expected to reduce adverse impacts to marine mammals, including operational measures that reduce the likelihood of injury and time/area limitations that reduce the probability and severity of behavioral disturbance. Required monitoring and reporting will increase our understanding of the impacts of the activity on marine mammals. Dear MARMAM community, We are pleased to share our new paper entitled 'Habitat preference of common minke whale (*Balaenoptera acutorostrata*) in Skjálfandi Bay, Iceland'. Abstract: Anthropogenic activity has contributed to increased extinction rates, creating a need to monitor and conserve vulnerable species. Understanding the distribution and habitat preference of threatened species can identify crucial habitats, for which protection can improve the population size numbers. Here, we investigate the habitat preference of the common minke whale, a rapidly declining yet understudied cetacean species. We analysed minke whale sightings over time and in relation to environmental factors (depth, sea surface temperature, sediment, chlorophyll), based on long-term monitoring data from Skjálfandi Bay in the northeast of Iceland. We found minke whales have a preference for water depth between 9-70m, and water temperature of either colder than 6°C or warmer than 9°C. Shallow depth was a strong predictor of minke whale presence, which matched sandeel distribution. Sandeels require shallow depths for spawning and overwinter burrowing, and the match between minke whale depth presence and sandeel habitat is in good agreement with sandeels being an important minke whale food source. Although the relationship between minke whale presence and sea surface temperature is weak, it also matched sandeel distribution. We also detected a decline in minke whale population size over the study period (2009-2018). The population decline observed here is consistent with the population trend estimated for the Icelandic population. We suggest that the habitat preferences identified here should be considered for conservation recommendations and minimising disturbance in the identified, crucial feeding areas. California Wildlife Center (CWC) - current staff position - Seasonal Marine Program Assistant (MPA). California Wildlife Center is located in Malibu, California, and responds to reports of stranded marine mammals 365 days a year. Our on-site rehabilitation facility, serving California sea lions and Northern elephant seals, is active from January through July, the busiest stranding months. Summary: This is a full-time, seasonal, hourly position. The Seasonal Marine Program Assistant (MPA) is an experienced marine mammal rehabilitative care provider, who works under the supervision of the Marine Program Manager, Stranding Coordinator, and often without supervision. This position is scheduled from April through July 2023, with the potential for extended part-time hours through November 2023. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned): * Perform all duties of a marine mammal rehabilitator including, but not limited to large animal restraint, patient intakes, oversee and perform general husbandry tasks of marine mammal patients, administer medication and fluid therapies, gavage feeding of seals and sea lions, assist with patient releases, maintain all rehabilitation equipment and enclosures. * Provide CWC marine mammal program support. * Provide marine animal response, rescue, and transport. * Facilitate volunteer and intern training and leadership. * Works with Marine Program staff to assess stranded marine mammal as soon as possible. * Utilize a tracking system for animals placed on 24-hour watch. * Transport of stranded marine mammals to the appropriate rehabilitation facility. * Manage maintenance of assigned equipment. * Establish and maintain good rapport with representatives of various public agencies and ensure compliance with all applicable regulations. * Assist in the response and collection of dead-stranded marine mammals. * Perform the occasional rescue of injured terrestrial wildlife (mostly birds) in the surrounding areas. * Responsible for closely supervising up to four volunteers/interns per shift, ensuring that all safety guidelines are followed while performing rescues, completing husbandry tasks, and providing care for all patients. Supervisory Responsibilities Oversee teams of up to four people per shift. Works with the Marine Program Manager to provide a safe environment for interns and volunteers to perform and expand their skillsets. Experience and Requirements: * Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and be comfortable driving a 12-person van (Ford Transit VN) and a Ford F-150 extended cab pickup truck. * Must be able to work cooperatively with co-workers, volunteers, interns, and the public. * Must be able to work quickly, efficiently, and calmly under stressful conditions. * Must be able to efficiently handle multiple responsibilities. * Must possess good verbal and written communication skills. * Upon hire, must pass a background check and show proof of COVID-19 vaccination. * Commitment to professionalism. Desired qualifications: * Two years’ direct experience in marine mammal rehabilitation and husbandry. * BA/BS or higher degree (preference given to marine biology fields of study). * Excellent public relations skills.
