New paper: Far-Field Effects of Impulsive Noise on Coastal Bottlenose Dolphins

Offshore renewable energy developments and seismic exploration can produce impulsive noise which is especially hazardous for marine mammals because it can induce auditory damage at shorter distances and behavioral disturbance at longer distances. However, far-field effects of impulsive noise remain poorly understood, causing a high level of uncertainty when predicting the impacts of offshore energy developments on marine mammal populations. Here we used a 10-year dataset on the occurrence of coastal bottlenose dolphins over the period 2009-2019 to investigate far-field effects of impulsive noise from offshore activities undertaken in three different years. Activities included a 2D seismic survey and the pile installation at two offshore wind farms, 20-75 km from coastal waters known to be frequented by dolphins. We collected passive acoustic data in key coastal areas and used a Before-After Control-Impact design to investigate variation in dolphin detections in areas exposed to different levels of impulsive noise from these offshore activities. We compared dolphin detections at two temporal scales, comparing years and days with and without impulsive noise. Passive acoustic data confirmed that dolphins continued to use the impact area throughout each offshore activity period, but also provided evidence of short-term behavioral responses in this area. Unexpectedly, and only at the smallest temporal scale, a consistent increase in dolphin detections was observed at the impact sites during activities generating impulsive noise. We suggest that this increase in dolphin detections could be explained by changes in vocalization behavior. Marine mammal protection policies focus on the near-field effects of impulsive noise; however, our results emphasize the importance of investigating the far-field effects of anthropogenic disturbances to better understand the impacts of human activities on marine mammal populations. The incumbent will serve as member of FWC’s manatee necropsy team conducting field and laboratory necropsies on manatee and other marine mammal carcasses, record observations and complete associated necropsy reports. This position will recover marine mammal carcasses for necropsy from the East Central region (coastal and inland waterways of southern Volusia County through Indian River County) of Florida and assist in manatee rescue and transport operations in the East Central region as well as assist with manatee rescue and capture operations away from designated area as needed. This position will be responsible for preparation and labeling of sample containers, carcass disposal, and cleaning of equipment and instruments. This position will be responsible for managing the East Central region’s intern and volunteer network which includes identifying candidates, interviewing, tracking their effort and training when needed. This position will be responsible for deployment, retrieval, maintenance and data collection of temperature probes throughout the winter months. This position will be responsible for assisting with other East Central regions projects such as photo identification and assisting with basic maintenance of vehicles, trailers and vessels as well purchasing needs and other tasks as assigned by supervisor. This position will assist with aerial surveys for manatees as needed. This position will have an assigned work schedule of Tuesday to Saturday (8:00 am-5:00 pm) and will be asked to respond to marine mammal emergencies and carcasses outside of normal work schedule as needed or assigned. This position will serve in a rotation with other East Central staff members for the purpose of covering the East Central Region during state holidays. Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the Guest Editors, I am pleased to announce that the Latin American Journal of Aquatic Mammals (LAJAM/) will publish a *Special Issue on the Biology and Conservation of Manatees* by the end of 2023. LAJAM is published twice a year by Sociedad Latinoamericana de Especialistas en Mamíferos Acuáticos/Sociedade Latino-Americana de Especialistas en Mamíferos Aquáticos (SOLAMAC). The journal publishes articles concerning research, management, and conservation biology of aquatic mammals in Latin America. Articles on theory or techniques broadly applicable to the study of aquatic mammals are also considered. For this Special Issue, we encourage submissions dealing with the distribution, population status, biology and ecology of manatees, as well as dealing with human conflicts, population genetics, ex-situ conservation, and sampling methods. For this issue, LAJAM will publish three types of contributed manuscripts: Articles, Notes and Protocols. Manuscripts must be written in English. All submitted manuscripts will be reviewed by at least 3 anonymous referees for scientific content. Guest Editors of the special issue are Drs. Carol Meirelles, João Carlos G. Borges, Rodrigo S. Eur J Wildl Res 69, 10 (2023). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10344-022-01639-x Abstract Historically, the Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) was distributed along the coastline comprised by the five Mexican states that border the Gulf of Mexico. However, the few healthy populations that currently exist in Mexico are now limited to relatively isolated regions with very specific habitat characteristics. In the state of Veracruz, a limited number of individuals are found in the Alvarado Lagoon System (ALS), located in the coastal zone of southern central Veracruz. The aim of this study was to characterize manatee habitat in the ALS. Transects were established in the ALS and 503 points selected and sampled along these transects, producing data pertaining to salinity, depth, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids, surface water temperature, pH, bottom type, and conductivity. A total of 45 outings were conducted, with a total sampling effort of 332.36 h. The average physicochemical parameters found were as follows: salinity 3.33 ppm, total dissolved solids 0.51 g/l, temperature 26.29 °C, dissolved oxygen 0.51%, pH 7.55, and oxidation–reduction potential 417.04 mV. Thirteen manatees were observed, mostly (84.6%) during the cold, where the parameters of electrical conductivity, salinity, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and oxidation–reduction potential showed differences between the sampled seasons, and in the lagoons with a presence of the floating and submersible vegetation species that form part of manatees’ diet. This study shows that the ALS presents lagoons that favor the presence of the Antillean manatee, further narrowing the distribution of the species within the same ALS in the southern central zone of the state of Veracruz. THE PROJECT The Montenegro Dolphin Research is a scientific project run by Marine Mammals Research Association (DMAD). Our study is the only long term research study of marine mammals in Montenegrin and Albanian coastal waters. We aim to address questions about marine mammal abundance, distribution and behavior, define critical habitats and investigate the impact of major threats, ranging from tourism to seismic practices. Our wider attention focuses on the promotion and implementation of awareness initiatives targeted at the local community, particularly youth and women. WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR We offer several volunteering and internship positions: this is a valuable opportunity for graduates that wish to gain experience in the marine mammal research field, and undergraduates that would like to obtain internship academic credits. It could be used to develop a scientific project for BSc and MSc thesis. However, we are also open to accept applications from anyone whose love for dolphins is strong and sincere. Opportunities are available starting from January 2023 onwards. This project runs year round with prefered arrival within the first week, or just before, of candidates prefered month. The minimum duration of the placements is 2 MONTHS, with possible exceptions for skilled candidates. FIELD WORK AND RESPONSIBILITIES -Performing land-based surveys at least three times a week, including sunrise and sunset hours; -Performing boat-based surveys once a week, weather allowing -Collecting dolphins sighting and behavior data, as well as environmental and anthropogenic data; -Operating theodolite and managing its software Pythagoras; -Data entry and analysis; -Cataloging and matching individuals of target species for photo-ID studies via Discovery software; -Raising stakeholder awareness through conservation actions. -Promoting citizen-science activities TRAINING The Montenegro Dolphin Research team provides intensive lectures and field work training as well as constant mentoring every week. Interns will primarily be trained in aspects of animal care, but will also participate in other activities at IMMS. Our goal is to give interns a well-rounded experience in a variety of areas while providing expert training and experience. The IMMS animal care and training staff is in charge of caring for Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, California sea lions, and large parrots. Interns will work directly with animal care staff and be exposed to all aspects of the daily routine. Heavy emphasis is placed on basic tasks such as food preparation, and daily cleaning and facility maintenance. Interns will learn how to train animals with operant conditioning through observation and may assist during sessions. Interns will also complete a project during their internship, as well as help staff with daily water quality. Because we want interns to have a well-rounded experience, they will also be asked to assist in other departments. Interns may participate as 1) environmental educators and assist in giving presentations to the public, 2) research assistants that help with our many wild dolphin based research studies, or 3) emergency responders as IMMS is part of the Southeast Regional Marine Mammal Stranding Network and responds to stranded marine mammals and sea turtles. Interested applicants must follow the directions listed on the website to apply. Interns must be: • 18 years or older. • A recent graduate or actively pursuing a college degree in the sciences. • Willing to accept the internship as an unpaid position. • Able to commit to a minimum of at least 12 weeks, 40 hours a week. Dear Community of MARMAM, I'm very happy to share with you a new publication about " *Health Status of StrandedCommon Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and Contamination byImmunotoxic Pollutants: A Threat to the Pelagos Sanctuary—WesternMediterranean Sea*". I invite you to read the article: https://doi.org/10.3390/d15040569 Abstract: Between 2019 and 2021, 21 bottlenose dolphins were found stranded dead along the Lig- urian Pelagos Sanctuary coast (Italy). For 11 animals, out of a total of 14 recovered, the cause of death was classified as natural, anthropic, or not determined based on gross and histological pathology and ancillary testing. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), and poly- chlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were examined in their blubber, and results were discussed according to their toxicological properties. All specimens showed the following trend: PCBs > DDTs >> HCB, and the levels of cancerogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic organochlorine compounds (T-OCs) were >50% of total OCs. Immunosuppressant organochlorine compound (IS-OC) levels in 10 out of 11 animals were above 50% of the total OCs. PCB levels always exceeded the threshold of 17 mg/kg lipid weight for PCB-induced adverse health effects. The results suggest that bottlenose dolphins living in the Pelagos Sanctuary undergo a high level of exposure to pathogens and OCs, betraying the designation of the Cetacean Sanctuary and, consequently, of a region created for their conservation. Immune dysfunction and infectious disease susceptibility appear to be highly connected with high levels of OC xenobiotics. These data are useful to understand health and mortality trends in cetacean populations, as well as for developing policies for cetacean conservation and management in this important protected area of the Mediterranean. May Training Session for PAM & R Courses

Greetings MARMAM Colleagues, As the accumulation of data for research, monitoring and mitigation of marine mammals has increased dramatically in recent years, so too has the need for analytical tools and methods to efficiently extract meaningful data products from this information. Passive acoustic data is a well-established tool used to study marine mammals, often resulting in months of data that can be tedious to review for vocal activity from a range of species. Additionally, collection of marine mammal observations and associated environmental data requires programmatic approaches to data management, analysis, and visualization. Ocean Science Analytics addresses the need for efficient processing of marine mammal data via our online technical training courses, *PAM: Large Acoustic Datasets* and *R for Ocean Science Data Analysis*. The next training session occurs in May and will be the last of the 2023 spring/early summer period (with the next sessions occurring in August (PAM) and September (R) of this year). Each course is accredited by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST <https://www.imarest.org/membership/education-careers/imarest-recognised-cpd…>), and is offered in an online, flexible format. Courses include a combination of guided videos, instructional materials, and scaffolded activities intended to provide you with a hands-on software experience. *PAM: Large Dataset Analysis*: Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) is commonly used to support biological monitoring and mitigation in marine environments. Reductions in the cost of equipment and data storage lead to the collection of huge volumes of data. Additionally with the recent push in offshore wind development, passive acoustic monitoring informs temporal distribution of marine mammals and can assist in documenting vocal behavioral response within lease areas. This course provides acousticians with a workflow for processing data using a combination of PAMGuard and acoustic packages based in R programming language. *R for Ocean Science Data Analysis**:* Marine mammal observation data (visual or acoustic) is frequently evaluated in association with environmental data. Understanding the relationship between marine mammals and environmental conditions serving a wide range of purposes from evaluating the effects of climate change on cetaceans to establishing marine protected areas. With the procurement of large datasets comes the need for efficient and effective data management and processing tools. R programming language is a free, open-source tool that can be used for a wide range of ocean science data needs, including data wrangling, visualization, and analysis. This course provides participants with a context-specific background to R using oceanographic data throughout the course materials. This course is designed for novice R learners interested in developing intermediate skills in ocean science data analysis. Job Posting: Research Coordinator for Pacific Whale Foundation (Maui, USA) The research department at Pacific Whale Foundation is recruiting for the newly created position of Research Coordinator, to report directly to our Research Manager, Dr. Shannon Barber-Meyer. Pacific Whale Foundation is a 501c(3) non-profit dedicated to protecting the ocean through science and advocacy and inspiring environmental stewardship. Our researchers have studied whales and dolphins throughout the Pacific for over 40 years. The long-term goal of our research program is to identify and assess major threats to whales and dolphins around the world and develop science-based solutions to mitigate these problems. Pacific Whale Foundation has an immediate opening for a Research Coordinator who is responsible for providing administrative support to the research program directors and managers to allow them to dedicate more of their time to research. This position is based in Hawai’i but provides support to a team of 6 researchers (2 directors and 4 managers) working both domestically and internationally. Please note that this role does not involve conducting research. The successful Research Coordinator candidate works at the direction of the Research Manager and will coordinate many responsibilities at one time, ranging from lab schedules and calendars, gathering information from teams, creating public-facing content, creating and organizing staff trainings, coordinating volunteers for various projects and will bring excellent organizational and project planning skills. Communications skills and a strong commitment to the mission, goals and values of Pacific Whale Foundation will set you apart.
