Stockton University (Galloway, NJ), Orsted Ocean Wind, and Azura Consulting will offer a Protected Species Observer (PSO) Course September 16 to October 8, 2022 at Stockton University Marine Field Station. This lecture and field-based PSO course will run for four weeks on Friday evenings (5-8pm) and Saturdays (9am-5pm). Protected Species Observers (PSO) help minimize potential impacts of human activities on federally protected marine mammals and sea turtles. PSOs monitor these animals during coastal and offshore projects, including construction, geophysical surveys, and explosive blasting. Upon course completion and passing the exam, students receive an industry accepted PSO certification. Taught by experienced PSOs and marine mammal scientists with experience in the mid-Atlantic and northeastern US, this training focuses on monitoring protected species in coastal NJ and surrounding regions. New publication with review of TTS experiments on porpoises and phocid seals

Dear colleagues, As part of the background work for an update to the Danish guidelines for mitigating impact from pile driving noise we have undertaken a review of the numerous experiments on Temporary Threshold Shift in harbour porpoises and phocid seals conducted in recent years – studies that are too new to be included in the most recent guidance from NOAA/Southall et al. Madsen "Thresholds for noise induced hearing loss in harbor porpoises and phocid seals", The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America 151, 4252-4263 (2022) https://doi.org/10.1121/10.0011560 Abstract: Intense sound sources, such as pile driving, airguns, and military sonars, have the potential to inflict hearing loss in marine mammals and are, therefore, regulated in many countries. The most recent criteria for noise induced hearing loss are based on empirical data collected until 2015 and recommend frequency-weighted and species group-specific thresholds to predict the onset of temporary threshold shift (TTS). Here, evidence made available after 2015 in light of the current criteria for two functional hearing groups is reviewed. For impulsive sounds (from pile driving and air guns), there is strong support for the current threshold for very high frequency cetaceans, including harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena). Less strong support also exists for the threshold for phocid seals in water, including harbor seals (Phoca vitulina). For non-impulsive sounds, there is good correspondence between exposure functions and empirical thresholds below 10 kHz for porpoises (applicable to assessment and regulation of military sonars) and between 3 and 16 kHz for seals. Above 10 kHz for porpoises and outside of the range 3–16 kHz for seals, there are substantial differences (up to 35 dB) between the predicted thresholds for TTS and empirical results. These discrepancies call for further studies. PSO Training Course Online on July 23-24, 2022

MPSC is offering a virtual training course that provides Protected Species Observer (also known as Marine Mammal Observer) certification on July 23-24, 2022. This training is approved by the federal agencies Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) in coordination with National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to provide Protected Species Observer Certification for geological and geophysical surveys in the Gulf of Mexico, and the certification is often accepted in many other regions or industries where monitoring and mitigation is needed for reducing impacts to protected species. Course cost includes the instruction, advice on applying to PSO positions, the professional certification, and the various regulatory documents and supplementary identification guides which will be yours to keep. This course will examine the regulations for reducing impacts to marine mammals and sea turtles, how to locate and identify the animals, and objective reporting to regulatory agencies. After discussing regulatory requirements, we will examine key identifying features and behaviors of the different protected species, including how PSOs can identify the animals during industry operations. The course will also detail techniques for locating animals and estimating distance, monitoring gear, and how to document protected species activity. The course also includes live discussions with experienced PSOs, providing the opportunity to hear first-hand what it's really like to live and work offshore. New publication- review on hearing in two focal cetacean species

Dear colleagues, We are pleased to announce the publication of our review of hearing in two focal cetacean species exposed to Ocean Economy developments in the Indian Ocean: Plön, S. and N. Roussouw. 2022. Focussing on the receiver- hearing in two focal cetaceans exposed to Ocean Economy developments. *Applied Acoustics 196:108890.* Abstract: Plans for large-scale economic developments in the Indian Ocean, including increased shipping, oil and gas exploration and offshore mining, have resulted in concerns about potential impacts on cetaceans. Two species of particular interest are the resident, coastal Indian Ocean humpback dolphin *Sousa plumbea* and the migratory humpback whale *Megaptera novaeangliae*. As the two species belong to different hearing groups (high-frequency odontocetes vs low-frequency mysticetes), we review the available literature on their differing hearing mechanisms (physiology), specialities and sensitivities here as there is a lack of data available for these two species in the Indian Ocean region. The reviewed information included audiogram data, species-specific frequencies and sensitivity ranges, ear morphology and adaptations for hearing in their respective groups where available. For odontocetes, most information stems from animals under human care, while for mysticetes bioacoustic measurements, like audiograms, are more difficult to access, resulting in a lack of data on hearing for *M. novaeangliae*. Our review highlights an absence of baselines upon which to measure future impacts from anthropogenic developments in the Indian Ocean and we suggest future work to address this. Our work is not only timely in view of the planned anthropogenic developments in the Indian Ocean, but also has wider implications in the global context as cumulative impacts on cetaceans grow due to increased international demand for resources and associated Ocean Economy developments. JNCC MMO Course

Please be advised a JNCC certified Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) course with an additional module for the Irish guidelines will run on 9th and 10th of July (Saturday and Sunday). The course will be run online via Zoom and Moodle. Online modules will be taught via Zoom and will include: 1. Marine mammal identification for UK waters. 2. Mitigation techniques and different sources of anthropogenic noise, with frequency and source levels. 3. UK regulatory setup. 4. Distance estimation techniques 5. Noise Abatement 6. JNCC Form completion 7. Safety and medical requirements for work at sea 8. Irish NPWS Guidelines Attendees will be expected to pass various evaluations with pass marks set according to the importance of the module. While students are allowed to re-take exams or assignments, certificates will not be issued until a pass mark is attained. Some knowledge of marine mammals is assumed. Interactive introductory distance sampling training The University of St Andrews has been training ecologists and statisticians in design and analysis of distance sampling studies for decades. Distance sampling methods are widely used in population assessment of marine mammal populations. Perhaps you've wanted to attend a previous workshop, but schedules conflicted with your field work. 👨‍🌾 We are offering the training workshop in 10 2.5-hour blocks in August/September 2022. You will be invited to interact in short lectures on distance sampling principles. 👩‍🎓 Exercises analysing data sets in R will reinforce those principles and the lecturer will be available to assist during the practical session via screen sharing. Comparative Cognition & Behavior Reviews. doi: 10.3819/CCBR.2022.170004* *Abstract:* Vocal production learning is the ability to modify a vocal output in response to auditory experience. It is essential for human speech production and language acquisition. Vocal learning evolved independently several times in vertebrates, indicating evolutionary pressure in favor of this trait. This enables cross-species comparative analysis to be used to test evolutionary hypotheses. Humans share this ability with a versatile but limited group of species: songbirds, parrots and hummingbirds, bats, cetaceans, seals, and elephants.
