Summary of Responsibilities Include: * Performs as a NOAA NMFS authorized primary responder on marine mammal strandings and collects Level A stranding data, working in the field and office. * Performs as a co-investigator on population assessment permit. Duties include boat-based surveys, photo analysis, data entry and data QA/QC. * Assists with maintenance of vessels, vehicles and equipment used for operations. * Participates in on-call rotation with other members of the group. * Assists with curation of marine mammal tissue archives. * Participates in presentations or other outreach activities regarding stranding and population assessments. * Assists with necropsy facilities maintenance and management operations. * Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor of Science from an accredited institution in Biology, Environmental Sciences, or related field with one year of marine mammal stranding experience and related activities required. Appropriate college coursework may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. Must have valid Florida driver’s license with acceptable driving record or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire required. Successfully complete the USGS Motorboat Operator Certification (MOCC) within 6 months of hire required. Experience driving various vessels in coastal and offshore waters required. Comfortable driving large vehicles and towing boats required. Florida certificate of Boating Safety Education required or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire required. Ability to become a NOAA NMFS primary responder on marine mammal stranding activities (Article 3 and 4) required within one year of hire. Ability to immediately be approved for NOAA NMFS primary responder is preferred. The ability to be able to work within a team and independently required. Seeking volunteers for online small cetacean bycatch research project

Dear MARMAM community, The University of Exeter and Cornwall Wildlife Trust is conducting a research citizen science project to develop and test a diagnosis tool for detecting bycatch in stranded cetaceans using external features, such as encircling marks and other wounds. We are investigating whether it’s possible for trained individuals to diagnose bycatch to a high degree of certainty using only external features and to create a diagnostic system to investigate bycatch in stranded small cetaceans, where a post-mortem examination is not possible. We are looking for volunteers to participate in this research project to help us generate data by examining photos of strandings and identifying possible bycatch features. Volunteers will be given access to online training in the skills of identifying bycatch features on stranded cetaceans. Using your new skills, you can examine real strandings cases through the website to determine whether they were bycaught or not, all from the comfort of your own home. We will use the data you generate to develop and test this new bycatch diagnostic method. We are looking for volunteers with any level of experience and can be based anywhere, but you will need to; * Be over 18 years old * Be able to commit at least 5 hours to the project * Have access to the internet and a laptop or desktop computer * Understand written English What will you gain? Involvement in this project is entirely voluntary, you will gain training and experience examining small cetacean strandings by examining detailed photographs through a web-based system. In remote places such as the coastline of the Atacama Desert in Northern Chile, research focused on cetacean species is often limited by funding, and personnel. However, scientific interest from local citizens could be an alternative and useful tool to obtain valuable information on cetaceans. Here, we assess the power of citizen science as a tool to determine cetacean species richness, group size, behaviour, seasonality <https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/seasonali…> and conservation threats in Northern Chile by undertaking training workshops for local citizens on cetacean species identification and data gathering. A total of 24 citizen scientists reported 495 cetacean sightings during the period between 2013 and 2020, with a total of 19 cetacean species observed (6 mysticetes and 13 odontocetes). One bay (Mejillones Bay) dominated most cetacean sightings (73%) in the study area (Antofagasta region). Seven cetacean species were more frequently observed year-round: *Balaenoptera physalus*, *Megaptera novaeangliae*, *Grampus griseus*, *Tursiops truncatus* , *Lagenorhynchus obscurus*, *Delphinus capensis* and *Phocoena spinipinnis*. Other species were either opportunistically observed or were rare stranded species. Four species of cetaceans, *B. physalus, D. capensis, L. obscurus,* and *P. spinipinnis* were observed mostly traveling (43%) and feeding (37%), indicating that the study region is an important feeding area. Twelve cetacean species were reported stranded, and citizen scientists identified 3 species of cetaceans entangled in fishing nets. This study shows the potential of citizen science for providing information on cetacean richness and threats in remote locations such as the South East Pacific. This approach may improve knowledge on fine-scale cetacean distribution for regions that are sparsely populated and have limited research activity. MMO, PSO and PAM training courses in November

Ocean Science Consulting Limited (OSC) is pleased to offer its next Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC)-approved Marine Mammal Observer (MMO), Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) Protected Species Observer (PSO), and Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) training course. JNCC-certified MMOs comply with UK regulations and PSOs comply with USA regulations to minimise the risk of injury and disturbance to marine mammals from various offshore operations. OSC's MMO course include lectures and discussion as well as practical elements including binocular and range estimation training at Dunbar Harbour, as well as practical role-play sessions. The PAM course includes hands-on learning of how to operate real PAM systems. These courses will be held in person at OSC's headquarters in Dunbar, Scotland. OSC's next JNCC-approved MMO training course is planned for 16 November 2021 in Dunbar, Scotland, UK, for £220 per person (requires 5+ course attendees). This cost includes provision of a copy of the 'Marine Mammal Observer and Passive Acoustic Monitoring Handbook' for each participant. New paper on the population dynamics of southern Beaufort Sea polar bears

Dear colleagues, My co-authors and I are pleased to announce the recent publication of a paper on the population dynamics of southern Beaufort Sea polar bears. The abstract and citation follow. The Arctic Ocean is undergoing rapid transformation toward a seasonally ice-free ecosystem. As ice-adapted apex predators, polar bears (Ursus maritimus) are challenged to cope with ongoing habitat degradation and changes in their prey base driven by food-web response to climate warming. Knowledge of polar bear response to environmental change is necessary to understand ecosystem dynamics and inform conservation decisions. In the southern Beaufort Sea (SBS) of Alaska and western Canada, sea ice extent has declined since satellite observations began in 1979 and available evidence suggests that the carrying capacity of the SBS for polar bears has trended lower for nearly two decades. In this study, we investigated the population dynamics of polar bears in Alaska's SBS from 2001 to 2016 using a multistate Cormack-Jolly-Seber mark-recapture model. States were defined as geographic regions, and we used location data from mark-recapture observations and satellite-telemetered bears to model transitions between states and thereby explain heterogeneity in recapture probabilities. Our results corroborate prior findings that the SBS subpopulation experienced low survival from 2003 to 2006. Survival improved modestly from 2006 to 2008 and afterward rebounded to comparatively high levels for the remainder of the study, except in 2012. Abundance moved in concert with survival throughout the study period, declining substantially from 2003 and 2006 and afterward fluctuating with lower variation around an average of 565 bears (95% Bayesian credible interval [340, 920]) through 2015. Even though abundance was comparatively stable and without sustained trend from 2006 to 2015, polar bears in the Alaska SBS were less abundant over that period than at any time since passage of the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act. The potential for recovery is likely limited by the degree of habitat degradation the subpopulation has experienced, and future reductions in carrying capacity are expected given current projections for continued climate warming. Dear Colleagues, The Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC) is accepting applications for 2023 veterinary student externship (open to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students). The PMMC rescues, rehabilitates and releases marine mammals and inspires ocean stewardship through research, education, and collaboration. As part of our mission of education, the PMMC offers a 4 to 6 week externship for veterinary students that provides experience in marine mammal medicine, rehabilitation, husbandry, necropsy and research. Position: Marine Mammal Veterinary Student Externship Location: Laguna Beach, California Duration: 4 to 6 weeks Dates: January 1st, 2023 - August 1st, 2023 Due Date: December 1st, 2021, or sooner; applications will be reviewed as received Description: The extern will work under the direct supervision of the veterinarians, as well as assist animal care staff and volunteers with daily care and feeding of the patients. Externs will participate in pinniped (and occasional cetacean) triage, physical examinations, medical treatments, anesthesia, phlebotomy, radiography, ultrasonography, endoscopy and surgery depending on the needs of the patients at the time of their externship. In addition, externs will participate in live animal stranding response and necropsy, including pinnipeds, dolphins and whales. Externs will be required to complete a small research project. Results will be presented to Pacific Marine Mammal Center staff and volunteers, with the ultimate goal of completing a project that can be presented at a conference and/or published in a peer-reviewed journal. This is an unpaid position and preference will be given to students who will be in their final clinical year of veterinary school at the time of the externship. Requirements and Preferences: * Preference will be given to students in their final clinical year of veterinary school at the time of the externship * Must be able to lift 50 pounds, be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and maintain a safe work environment * Unpaid position: Travel, housing, and transportation will be the student's responsibility * Hours and availability: 40 hours per week; must be available for afterhours emergencies, weekends and holidays * Preference will be given to those with marine mammal and/or research experience * Excellent communication skills * Ability to accurately and effectively complete medical records To apply, please include the below materials with PDF saved with the applicant’s last name: 1.
