Best software for sequence sampling of beluga whale socio-sexual behaviour

Hi all, The GREMM (Group for research and education on marine mammals) is currently starting a new study on the socio-sexual behaviour of beluga whales in the St-Lawrence River. We now have 2 seasons, starting a third, of drone footage and are starting analysis. We are trying to analyse the footage using event logging softwares to mesure frequency of certain behaviours and to look at relationships between group size/composition and occurence of behaviours. We are at exploratory stage right now. I've tried both Jwatcher and BORIS and was wondering if anyone had input (which ones you prefer/useful tricks) on any of these softwares or other softwares that could be useful for behavioural analysis of drone footage. ENDANGERED SPECIES OBSERVERS NEEDED - IMMEDIATE and FUTURE OPENINGS REMSA Inc's Coastal & Marine Division is seeking skilled and experienced Endangered Species Observers to monitor sea turtles, marine mammals, sturgeons, and birds during dredging and other marine construction projects on various waterways along the East Coast and Gulf of Mexico in the United States.. Observers need to be available to travel on short notice, be able to live aboard an off-shore vessel for periods of time (3-4 weeks). Must be able to work independently and follow technical instructions as required. *Sufficient marine mammal and sea turtle experience is mandatory, and the ability to work in various job locations throughout the U.S. is a plus. Duties include, but are not limited to the following: Identification of marine animals at distance, up close, and in pieces to the correct species for: sea turtles, marine mammals, sturgeons, and saw-tooth fish. Maintain bridge watch for sea turtles and marine mammals during all operative hours Physically inspect each dredge load screening basket, and points of intake for evidence of any endangered or threatened species live or dead, in whole, or severely damaged. Report interactions with endangered/threatened species to various government agencies as determined within the project's specifications. Data collection, tagging, biopsies, and record keeping of biological sampling data for sea turtles and other species of concern as determined by the project detailed Biological Opinion and Specifications. REQUIREMENTS: Must be a U.S. Citizen or have authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship or restrictions Must have (or be eligible to obtain) Endangered/Protected Species approval from the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Must have a valid Driver's License & Clean Driving Record Must be able to lift 50 pounds, operate in confined spaces, and climb ladders aboard ships and crew boats Must have or be able to obtain a Federal TWIC clearance Education: Bachelor's Degree in Marine Biology, Biology, Ecology or similar education with at least one year of specialized AT-SEA experience. Extensive exposure and knowledge through experience will be considered. Experience Extensive hands-on experience with sea turtles and/or marine mammals is required for consideration. Two papers on deep diving, pelagic bottlenose dolphins

Dear All, We are pleased to announce that the following two papers have been published looking at resting metabolic rate, lung function (article 1) and theoretical blood and tissue gas tensions (article 2) in free-ranging bottlenose dolphin Article 1: Fahlman A, McHugh K, Allen J, Barleycorn A, Allen A, Sweeney J, Stone R, Faulkner Trainor R, Bedford G, Moore MJ, Jensen FH, and Wells R (2018) Resting Metabolic Rate and Lung Function in Wild Offshore Common Bottlenose Dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, Near BermudaFront. Physiol. 9:886. doi: 10.3389/fphys.2018.00886 URL: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fphys.2018.00886/full Abstract: Diving mammals have evolved a suite of physiological adaptations to manage respiratory gases during extended breath-hold dives. To test the hypothesis that offshore bottlenose dolphins have evolved physiological adaptations to improve their ability for extended deep dives and as protection for lung barotrauma, we investigated the lung function and respiratory physiology of 4 wild common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) near the island of Bermuda. We measured blood haematocrit (Hct, %), resting metabolic rate (RMR, l O2 min-1), tidal volume (VT, l), respiratory frequency (fR, breaths min-1), respiratory flow (l min-1), and dynamic lung compliance (CL, l cmH2O-1) in air and in water, and compared measurements with published results from coastal, shallow-diving dolphins. We found that offshore dolphins had greater Hct (56±2%) compared to shallow-diving bottlenose dolphins (range: 30-49%), thus resulting in a greater O2 storage capacity and longer aerobic diving duration. Contrary to our hypothesis, the specific CL (sCL, 0.30 ± 0.12 cmH2O-1) was not different between populations. Neither the mass-specific RMR (3.0±1.7 ml O2 min-1 kg-1), nor VT (23.0 ± 3.7 ml kg-1) were different from coastal ecotype bottlenose dolphins, both in the wild and under managed care, suggesting that deep-diving dolphins do not have metabolic or respiratory adaptations that differs from the shallow-diving ecotypes. The lack of respiratory adaptations for deep diving further support the recently developed hypothesis that gas management in cetaceans is not entirely passive but governed by alteration in the ventilation-perfusion matching, which allows for selective gas exchange to protect against diving related problems such as decompression sickness. Considerable research has been done to understand how dolphins manage O2 during diving, but little information exists on other gases or how pressure affects gas exchange. Here we used a dynamic multi-compartment gas exchange model to estimate blood and tissue O2, CO2 and N2 from high-resolution dive records of two different common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) ecotypes inhabiting shallow (Sarasota Bay) and deep (Bermuda) habitats. The objective was to compare potential physiological strategies used by the two populations to manage shallow and deep diving life styles. We informed the model using species-specific parameters for blood hematocrit, resting metabolic rate, and lung compliance. The model suggests that the known O2 stores were sufficient for Sarasota Bay dolphins to remain within the calculated aerobic dive limit (cADL), but insufficient for Bermuda dolphins that regularly exceeded their cADL. By adjusting the model to reflect the body composition of deep diving Bermuda dolphins, with elevated muscle mass, muscle myoglobin concentration and blood volume, the cADL increased beyond the longest dive duration, thus reflecting the necessary physiological and morphological changes to maintain their deep-diving life-style. The results indicate that cardiac output had to remain elevated during surface intervals for both ecotypes, and suggests that cardiac output has to remain elevated during shallow dives in-between deep dives to allow sufficient restoration of O2 stores for Bermuda dolphins. Our integrated modelling approach contradicts predictions from simple models, emphasising the complex nature of physiological interactions between circulation, lung compression and gas exchange. The Subcommittee on Ocean Science and Technology (SOST), which is a partnership between the Office of Naval Research, Chief of Naval Operations N45, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Marine Mammal Commission, is interested in funding research pertaining to the development of audiograms for mysticetes. The Living Marine Resources (LMR) program, at the Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center, is leading the solicitation process and is requesting pre-proposals for this topic. Details regarding the need topic can be viewed within the official Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) N39430-18-S-2067 and associated Appendices at www.neco.navy.mil, www.fbo.gov, or at http://navysustainability.dodlive.mil/lmr/. There is no specific format required for the pre-proposal, however, the information required in the pre-proposal is outlined in Appendix A of the announcement. The pre-proposal should be consolidated into one single file and should not exceed 10 pages in length. All pre-proposals should be submitted via email to exwc_lmr_program(a)navy.mil. Pre-proposals for this topic will be accepted until 11:59 PM PST on 31 August 2018. If invited, offerors will be asked to submit a full proposal. Pre-proposals and full proposals will be shared with SOST representatives from each of the Federal agencies/entities listed above, in order for them to provide input on funding selections. R: sperm whale tooth sample from Polynesia

I have spent the past 6 years stationed in the Samoa archipelago, Polynesia. In November 2015 I have bought from the people of a village located in the NE coast of Upolu a tooth extracted from the carcass of a sperm whale that had rolled few days earlier within a deep lagoon. I explored the carcass that same day. It was still quite fresh, with a quite large tiger shark feasting on it. It took 1.5 years to get a CITES permission from the Samoan Govt. on scientific grounds. I applied as a freelance researcher affiliated with the National University of Samoa (NUS) and the Natural History Museum of Florence, Italy. I have committed with the Samoan Govt. to do my best to get as much scientific information as possible from this sample. I thought that obtaining a sample from a protected pelagic species like this would not be so simple and would be quite a unique opportunity. Despite I am not an expert in this field I have prepared a simple research proposal made up of 3 objectives: 1. age the individual sperm whale, as getting to know the age may give clues on the causes of death; 2. analyse the inner tissue of the tooth in order to detect occurrence of any heavy metal or radionuclides; 3. extract DNA for genetic analysis.
