Please note this is one of two positions the Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program is currently recruiting for. JIMAR PIFSC BIOLOGICAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE – ID# 17422. Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non- Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR), located at the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Pacific Islands Regional Office (PIFSC) in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $2,501/Mon. DUTIES: Performs daily maintenance and operation of field camps. Assists the Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program (HMSRP) project staff with planning and coordination of field activities for research and emergency response in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) and the main Hawaiian Islands (MHI). Collects census and life history data on Hawaiian monk seals. Conducts boating operations. Leads other field personnel. Responsible for returning and storing all field equipment and supplies at the end of field season. Collaborates with scientists within NMFS to conduct and analyze field studies on the Hawaiian monk seal. PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Marine Biology, Biology, Fisheries Oceanography, or other related field. (An Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in a related field plus three (3) years of relevant experience may be substituted for Bachelor’s Degree). EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of field experience, including experience working within small groups in remote settings. One to three (1-3) years of experience conducting research and handling Hawaiian monk seals or other species. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Working knowledge of personal computers including use of word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. Must be able to meet and maintain United States Department of Commerce (DOC) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements to access work location. Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien. Good communications skills (both written and oral). Leadership and decision-making skills. Ability to perform data entry. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to obtain a forklift operator’s certification within twelve (12) months of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to obtain International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Shipper Training certification within twelve (12) months of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be NOAA certified for small boat operations (having completed Motorboat Operators Certification Course (MOCC) and NOAA small boat component training) within twelve (12) months of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to meet US Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements for working in a federal facility, which includes being fingerprinted and having a federal background check performed prior to date of hire and maintained throughout duration of employment. Must be able to pass pre-deployment training requirements including field medical training before being deployed to remote islands. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to swim. Must be able to work long hours in the sun. Ability to physically capture and restrain adult seals. Ability to work in remote locations for extended periods of time. Must be able to walk long distances (up to seven (7) miles) in the sand carrying twenty-five to thirty-five (25-35) pounds of field gear. Must be able to obtain medical clearance for embarking/working on NOAA research vessels or other appropriate vessels which includes providing proof of required immunizations and/or obtaining the necessary immunizations as required by NOAA Marine and Aviation Operations. *Graduate student position in marine mammal trophic ecology.* The Dauphin Island Sea Lab seeks an MS-level graduate student in marine mammal trophic ecology (experience with marine mammal observation, stranding and necropsy response, and/or photo-identification is preferred but not required). Students must have a strong interest in hypothesis-based research, background in chemistry, and experience with statistical methods. Experience with small boat operation and trailering also preferred. Work is both lab and field based, and students must be able to work long hours conducting detailed work with a microscope and processing tissue samples as well as in the field during unfavorable weather conditions. The suitable candidate must be independent and highly motivated. Strong public speaking skills and work with the public are necessary. Students will apply through the University of South Alabama (USA) for matriculation in fall 2018, but the most suitable candidate will begin work in the lab in January 2018. Students must meet the minimum qualifications for entry to the University of South Alabama graduate school of Arts and Sciences and the Marine Sciences Department and have relevant coursework in the topic area of interest. *Post-Doctoral Position in Stable Isotope & Seascape Ecology*. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab is seeking a post-doctoral researcher to work with Dr. Ruth H. Carmichael for two-years in the area of stable isotope ecology. The Postdoctoral Investigator will join ongoing research projects that employ stable isotope and trace element analyses for dietary, condition, anthropogenic source tracing, and movement/ migration studies. Specifically, the Postdoctoral Investigator will help lead a newly funded research study on diet of cetaceans (bottlenose dolphins) before, during, and following the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and assist with data analyses and interpretation of existing spatially and temporally explicit elemental datasets to better understand marine mammal movements and foraging patterns. Position responsibilities include interacting with and supervising graduate and undergraduate students or interns, working closely with collaborators on ongoing projects, publishing papers from new and existing datasets, developing new lines of inquiry that build on the core research studies, and disseminating data through scientific meetings and public presentations. Applicants should have expertise in sample preparation and analysis for stable isotope ratio determination in a variety of animal tissues, use of isotope mixing models such as SIAR, and use of statistical analyses and software programs such as IsoMAP for modeling isoscapes. Experience with R statistical methods, student mentoring, and project management preferred. Familiarity with trace element or fatty acid analyses is beneficial as is experience with other types of spatial or distribution analyses. Applicants must hold an earned Ph.D., be fluent in written and spoken English, and be legally able to work in the USA at the time of application. Tenure-track Faculty Position in Marine Mammal Biology Biology Department, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) The Biology Department at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position on our Scientific Staff. We seek outstanding candidates to complement our existing interdisciplinary strengths in biology, biological oceanography, and marine ecology (www.whoi.edu/biology <http://www.whoi.edu/biology>). We are particularly interested in applicants who conduct research in marine mammal physiology or pathophysiology. Expertise may include (but is not limited to) health assessment, stress, stranding, diving physiology, functional morphology or disease. The new hire will have access to a state-of-the-art necropsy laboratory as well as the opportunity to further develop our computed tomography (CT) scanner facility. Candidates with expertise in other aspects of marine mammal biology are also encouraged to apply. Marine Animal Rehabilitation & Environmental Education Internship The National Marine Life Center (NMLC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to rehabilitating and releasing stranded marine mammals and sea turtles, seals in order to advance science and education in marine wildlife health and conservation. NMLC is located in Buzzards Bay, MA. Animal Care Responsibilities: Depending on need and case load, interns will assist with the care of the NMLC rehabilitation patients including seals, sea turtles, and freshwater turtles. Animal care duties will include animal restraint, cleaning, disinfecting tanks, equipment, and environmental enrichment devices, food preparation, administering feeds including tube feeding, data entry, maintenance and water quality testing. Interns will also assist animal care staff with medical procedures, admission exams, necropsies and release events. Education Responsibilities: Interns will assist with environmental education programs, including on-site programs, off-site programs, fairs, and festivals. Interns will assist in giving public presentations to guests of NMLC and educate them on marine animals and conservation. Interns will assist in the gift shop; assist with various office projects and event promotion. Other Responsibilities: At the end of the internship, the intern will present to the staff, volunteers, and members of the public an overview of their time spent at NMLC. Each intern will also be assigned a weekly chore to assist with the upkeep of the facility and equipment, and will be required to attend regularly scheduled intern meetings. Positions are unpaid, interns must have their own transportation, and housing is not provided, but NMLC will offer suggestions. Qualifications- * The internship is open to students who are currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from an accredited college or university. * Preference will be given to students or recent graduates working towards biology, environmental studies, marine science, education, or other related fields. * Intern should demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills. * Students that are adaptable, responsible, hardworking, willing to learn, and have attention to detail are encouraged to apply. * Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. * Spring interns should be available to work from January 2nd, 2018 to May 31st, 2018. * Interns should expect to work 30-40 hours per week, which will include early morning and/or late night seal feedings. * If an intern plans to receive school credit for an internship they must notify staff prior to the internship start date, and it will be the responsibility of the applicant to ensure all required paperwork is completed and submitted. Stranding records of Cuvier’s beaked whales (*Ziphius cavirostris*) in Norway. Unpublished report to Cetal Fauna. Report WB2017/2. 2 pp. *Abstract* Cuvier's beaked whales have a cosmopolitan distribution and can be found in most oceans and seas worldwide. Most of the distribution information is based on stranding records. Here we report two stranding records from Norway, including the first record from this country. Bachara, W. 2017. A stranding record of a Cuvier’s beaked whale (*Ziphius cavirostris*) in Chagos Archipelago, BIOT. Unpublished report to Cetal Fauna. Report no.1. 3 pp. *Abstract* Cuvier’s beaked whale the only member of the genus Ziphius, is the most widely distributed of all the beaked whales. Most of the distribution information is based on stranding records. Strandings in the Indian Ocean are very rare and a report from Chagos Archipelago is presented here. Bachara, W. and Matthews, B. 2016. First stranding record of a Blainville’s beaked whale (*Mesoplodon densirostris*) on Norfolk Island. Unpublished report to Cetal Fauna. Report WB2016/3. 3 pp. *Abstract* The beaked whales of the Norfolk Island region of the southwestern Pacific are still poorly known. Based on some sightings and one stranding, Norfolk Island waters lie within the range of the Blainville’s beaked whale. Bachara, W. and Barreiros, J. P. 2016. Stranding of four Sowerby’s beaked whales (*Mesoplodon bidens)* in Terceira, Azores. Unpublished report to Cetal Fauna. Report WB2016/3. 3pp. *Abstract* Sowerby's beaked whales are little known members of the beaked whale family (*Ziphiidae*). Based on data collected from strandings, this species is found in temperate and subarctic waters in the eastern and western North Atlantic. A very rare stranding record, involving four juvenile animals, found dead in the Azores, is here reported. Bachara, W. and Gullan, A. 2016. First stranding record of a True’s beaked whale (*Mesoplodon mirus)* in Mozambique. Unpublished report to Cetal Fauna. Report WB2016/1. 4 pp. *Abstract* True's Beaked Whales are found in cool temperate, deep oceanic waters. This species has a uniquely disjunct distribution, occurring in the northern North Atlantic Ocean, as well as the southern regions of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. Sightings of the species are very rare and it is mainly known from strandings. In the southern hemisphere a stranding hot spot is South Africa. Here we report two records from Mozambique, including the first stranding record for this country. Bachara, W., Laria, L. and Lopez, A. 2016. First stranding record of a Sowerby’s beaked whale (*Mesoplodon bidens*) in Asturias, Spain. Unpublished report to Cetal Fauna. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR), located at the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $2,501/Mon. DUTIES: Coordinates logistical operations for monk seal research and recovery activities primarily in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI). This includes packing and preparation of research/enhancement gear and equipment, organizing transportation and travel arrangements, coordinating personnel, and cleaning and maintaining gear, supplies, and equipment after field operations. Responsible for the maintenance of Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program (HMSRP) small boats and in the maintenance and cleaning of the monk seal component of the live animal Life Support System (LSS). Conducts and assists HMSRP project staff in field activities for research and emergency response in the main Hawaiian Islands (MHI) or in remote field camps in the NWHI (i.e., capturing and handling monk seals for research, health/disease assessment, flipper tagging, intervention and moving live animals, equipment, and gear). Trains staff and partners on the proper protocols for handling monk seals. Analyzes data collected and drafts reports for special research projects conducted in the MHI. Collects monk seal census and life history data, processes field data, and assists with data entry. Coordinates and collaborates on monk seal-fisheries interaction projects. Assists with Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) operations for population assessment and emergency response of monk seals. Works with other program staff on special research projects. PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Marine Biology, Biology, Fisheries Oceanography, or other related field. EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience as a biological technician or other related experience, which includes capturing, tagging, and restraining Hawaiian monk seals or other species. One to three (1-3) years of experience in logistical operations for field research and equipment. Experience with data entry. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Working knowledge of personal computers including use of word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. Knowledge of hazardous material safety. Working knowledge of small boat operation and maintenance. Must be able to meet and maintain the United States Department of Commerce (DOC) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements to access work location. Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Able to operate small boats. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to meet US Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements for working in a federal facility, which includes being fingerprinted and having a federal background check performed prior to date of hire and maintained throughout duration of employment. Must be able to obtain a forklift operator’s certification within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to obtain International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Shipper Training certification within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be NOAA certified for small boat operations (having completed Motorboat Operators Certification Course (MOCC) and NOAA small boat component training) (or be able to obtain the certification following the training provided within twelve (12) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to pass all training requirements, including, but not limited to advanced coxswain training. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to lift and carry equipment and gear up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. Must be able to swim. Ability to work in remote locations for extended periods of time. Must be able to work long hours in the sun. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to obtain NOAA Medical Clearance for embarking/working on NOAA research vessels or other appropriate vessels which includes providing proof of required immunizations and/or obtaining the necessary immunizations as required by NOAA Marine and Aviation Operations, and maintain throughout duration of employment. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Previous experience with marine mammal husbandry and/or veterinary care.
