Please share widely! I have a last minute opening for a field assistant in Florida this summer. Field Assistant Opportunity: One field assistant is needed for fieldwork to assist a post-doctoral researcher from the University of Massachusetts in dolphin feeding behavior, niche specialization, and habitat studies The field season will run for approximately 8 weeks, from June 5th through July 28th. Research will take place in Cedar Key, Florida, 3 hours north of Tampa and 60 miles west of Gainesville. The assistant will be responsible for their transportation in and out of Florida. Assistants will be expected to work on a boat 6 to 7 days per week, for up to 10 hours at a time. Typical weather conditions in summer include 95 degree heat, very high humidity, and no breezes. Prior experience working on dolphins and habitats, as well as acoustics, is preferred but not required. Those with no experience should demonstrate their willingness to learn. This is not a paid position. Assistants will have the option to obtain their own housing and food in Cedar Key. Housing is available with the PI, in this case assistants may be asked to contribute $75 per month towards food. More details are available. Opportunities for part-time work in tourist-related positions in Cedar Key may be available to assistants-however it is their responsibility to obtain those jobs and assistants must make the field work a priority. Priority will be given to applicants who can stay for the duration, however I am willing to hire in two blocks of time: June 5 to the 29th or July 5 to the 28th. *Fall 2017 Marine Mammal Research Internship* The IMMS Research Internship Program located in Gulfport, MS is designed as a way for students interested in a career in marine science to gain valuable research experience in a real-world setting. Interns will participate with multiple projects involving bottlenose dolphins, sea turtles and diamondback terrapins. As an intern, you will be trained in all aspects of dolphin photo-id research, sea turtle satellite tracking, and other current research projects at IMMS. Interns will also participate in other operations at IMMS including stranding response, education, and animal care. Our goal is to give Interns a well-rounded experience in a variety of areas while providing expert training and experience in marine science research. Interns must: - Commit to a minimum of at least 12 weeks. The internship can be extended depending on work performance. - Be available to work Mon-Fri and must be available for all boat trips. Some field days may fall on the weekends. - Have strong sense of responsibility, work ethic, attention to detail, and ability to admit mistakes. - Produce high quality research efforts and exhibit strong interpersonal skills. - *Principle Duties include*: data entry, searching and cataloging journal articles, learning all research protocols, cropping and sorting photo-id fin images, learning to use photo-id programs such as Darwin (fin matching software), and FinBase (Microsoft Access), boat based field research (21’ and 31’ boats), and learn how to use ArcGIS - *Secondary Duties involve*: Assisting with animal care staff, attending marine mammal necropsies, responding to marine mammal and sea turtle strandings, and assisting with educational tours. - *Field days: *Interns must be able to spend many hours on the water and on shore in sometimes extreme seasonal conditions. Seasonal temperatures range from over 100 °F in summer to 30 °F in winter. Field days typically exceed eight hours and occur at least two or three times a week. Applicants must be 18 or older and must have a genuine interest in marine research. Applicants should be actively pursuing a college degree or be a recent graduate in oceanography, marine science/biology, biology, or a related field. Previous research experience in any capacity is a plus. Applicants must be able and willing to fulfill all duties outlined for this Internship Program. *VOLUNTEER AND INTERN RECRUITMENT FOR THE MONTENEGRO DOLPHIN PROJECT (SOUTH ADRIATIC SEA)* *OUR PROJECT* The Montenegro Dolphin Project is a scientific project born from the partnership between the Marine Mammals Research Association (DMAD) and the Natural History Association of Montenegro. Our study is the first long term research study of marine mammals in Montenegrin coastal waters. We aim to address questions about marine mammal abundance, distribution and behavior, define critical habitats and investigate the impact of major threats. Our wider attention focuses on the promotion and implementation of awareness initiatives targeted at the local community, particularly youth. *WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR* We offer several volunteering and internship positions: this is an extremely valuable opportunity for graduates, that wish to gain experience in the marine mammal research field, and undergraduates, that would like to obtain internship academic credits. It could be used to develop a scientific project for *BSc *and* MSc thesis. *However, we are also open to accept applications from anyone whose love for dolphins is strong and sincere. Opportunities are available between *JUNE – OCTOBER 2017*. ACS-LA Chapter - Accepting Applications for 2017 Research Grants: Deadline May 25th (Midnight, GMT-7)

The American Cetacean Society, Los Angeles Chapter: Applications for 2017 Research Grants Deadline: May 25 (Midnight PDT, GMT -7) The American Cetacean Society protects cetaceans and their habitats though conservation, education and research. ACS funds research projects that address some of the most pressing issues facing cetaceans. ACS-LA is pleased to announce the availability of two research grants, in the amount of $1,000.00 each, to established researchers or student researchers attending school in the greater Los Angeles area whose work focuses on marine mammals. 1) The John E. Heyning Research Award. This award is in the amount of $1,000. John Heyning was a brilliant and prolific scientist. He was Deputy Director of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, where he built a collection of marine mammal specimens second only to Smithsonian and where he curated the Masters of the Ocean Realm exhibit that traveled to 22 countries. He was an authority on beaked whales, published the work that separated common dolphins into two separate species, and described the countercurrent heat exchange in whale tongues, among many other accomplishments. John was a strong supporter of ACS and its mission; he served on the organization’s Board of Scientific Advisors and taught the Whalewatch naturalist class for many years. 2) The Bill Samaras Research Award. This award is in the amount of $1,000.00. Bill Samaras was a geologist by training but his first love was whales. He taught science at Carson High School for 30 years, helped shape the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium into the institution it is today and led the excavation of a gray whale skeleton during the construction of the Harbor Freeway in San Pedro. Bill was a lifelong supporter of ACS, an organization that he served in many capacities. Guidelines for Research Grants: The Los Angeles Chapter of the American Cetacean Society offers small research grants in support of operating research projects focusing on marine mammals. ACS-LA has a long-standing commitment supporting local research on cetaceans and other marine mammals. The two $1,000 research grants will be awarded to researchers or students exhibiting an outstanding commitment to furthering the understanding of marine mammals in California. Priority will be given to applicants working or attending school in Southern California and/or conducting their marine mammal research in Southern California. Eligibility: 1. New collaboration: Orcasound app for citizen science

Dear MarMam colleagues, We would like to invite individuals and organizations with an interest in passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) of marine mammals to collaborate on the development and testing of a new browser-based app called "Orcasound." This is a evolution of the 15+year-old Salish Sea Hydrophone Network -- orcasound.net <http://orcasound.net?5050mm> -- based in WA, USA. If successful this project will at least make it much easier for citizen scientists to use their favorite device to listen for whales. At the most it will juxtapose in a spirited scientific competition two distinct approaches to bioacoustic analysis (e.g. detection, annotation, classification): crowd-sourcing through citizen science networks and algorithms run on high-performance computers in the cloud. The initial goal of the app is to streamline listening to live or recorded audio. It also enables listeners to report when they hear something interesting and to be notified of acoustic events detected by the network. After testing and refinement of these fundamental features (listening, detecting, notifications) the stage will be set for annotation and classification experiments (c.f. bioacoustic citizen science projects, Bat Detective <https://www.batdetective.org/> and WhaleFM <http://whalefm.org>). If you would like to collaborate, please don't hesitate to contact us. We are interested in discussing the project with marine mammal specialists who have deployed hydrophones, steward acoustic data archives, or have implemented bioacoustic detectors, classifiers, and/or citizen science projects. We would also like to invite educational/outreach organizations with an interest in marine mammal sounds and ocean noise pollution to join the current Hydrophone Network members in freely creating and sharing resources. Marine Animal Rehabilitation & Environmental Education Internship The National Marine Life Center (NMLC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to rehabilitating and releasing stranded marine mammals and sea turtles, seals in order to advance science and education in marine wildlife health and conservation. Animal Care Responsibilities: Depending on need and case load, interns will assist with the care of the NMLC rehabilitation patients including seals, sea turtles, and freshwater turtles. Animal care duties will include animal restraint, cleaning, disinfecting tanks, equipment, and environmental enrichment devices, food preparation, administering feeds including tube feeding, data entry, maintenance and water quality testing. Interns will also assist animal care staff with medical procedures, admission exams, necropsies and release events. Education Responsibilities: Interns will assist with environmental education programs, including on-site programs, off-site programs, fairs, and festivals. Interns will assist in giving public presentations to guests of NMLC and educate them on marine animals and conservation. Interns will assist in the gift shop; assist with various office projects and event promotion. Other Responsibilities: At the end of the internship, the intern will present to the staff, volunteers, and members of the public an overview of their time spent at NMLC. Each intern will also be assigned a weekly chore to assist with the upkeep of the facility and equipment, and will be required to attend regularly scheduled intern meetings. Positions are unpaid, interns must have their own transportation, and housing is not provided, but NMLC will offer suggestions. Qualifications- * The internship is open to students who are currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from an accredited college or university. * Preference will be given to students or recent graduates working towards biology, environmental studies, marine science, education, or other related fields. * Intern should demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills. * Students that are adaptable, responsible, hardworking, willing to learn, and have attention to detail are encouraged to apply. * Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. * Fall interns should be available to work from August 28th 2017 to January 2nd, 2018. * Interns should expect to work 40 hours per week which will include early morning and/or late night seal feedings. * If an intern plans to receive school credit for an internship they must notify staff prior to the internship start date, and it will be the responsibility of the applicant to ensure all required paperwork is completed and submitted. New publication: Applying the Multistate Capture-recapture Robust Design to characterize metapopulation structure

Dear MARMAM readers, My co-authors and I would like to announce our recent publication in Methods in Ecology and Evolution: Chabanne, D.B.H., Pollock, K.H., Finn, H. and Bejder, L. 2017 Applying the Multistate Capture-recapture Robust Design to characterize metapopulation structure. Methods in Ecology and Evolution. Doi: 10.1111/2041-210X.12792 ABSTRACT 1. Population structure must be considered when developing mark-recapture (MR) study designs as the sampling of individuals from multiple populations (or subpopulations) may increase heterogeneity in individual capture probability. Conversely, the use of an appropriate MR study design which accommodates heterogeneity associated with capture-occasion varying covariates due to animals moving between 'states' (i.e. geographic sites) can provide insight into how animals are distributed in a particular environment and the status and connectivity of subpopulations. 2. The Multistate Closed Robust Design (MSCRD) was chosen to investigate: 1) the demographic parameters of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) subpopulations in coastal and estuarine waters of Perth, Western Australia; and 2) how they are related to each other in a metapopulation. Using four years of year-round photo-identification surveys across three geographic sites, we accounted for heterogeneity of capture probability based on how individuals distributed themselves across geographic sites and characterized the status of subpopulations based on their abundance, survival and interconnection. 3. MSCRD models highlighted high heterogeneity in capture probabilities and demographic parameters between sites. High capture probabilities, high survival and constant abundances described a subpopulation with high fidelity in an estuary. In contrast, low captures, permanent and temporary emigration and fluctuating abundances suggested transient use and low fidelity in an open coastline site. 4. Estimates of transition probabilities also varied between sites, with estuarine dolphins visiting sheltered coastal embayments more regularly than coastal dolphins visited the estuary, highlighting some dynamics within the metapopulation. 5. Synthesis and applications. To date, bottlenose dolphin studies using mark-recapture approach have focused on investigating single subpopulations. Here, in a heterogeneous coastal-estuarine environment, we demonstrated that spatially structured bottlenose dolphin subpopulations contained distinct suites of individuals and differed in size, demographics and connectivity. Such insights into the dynamics of a metapopulation can assist in local-scale species conservation. The MSCRD approach is applicable to species/populations consisting of recognizable individuals and is particularly useful for characterizing wildlife subpopulations that vary in their vulnerability to human activities, climate change or invasive species. Ship strikes and the IWC

Dear Marmam friends and colleagues, with this message we would like to provide our yearly update on the issue of ship strikes (collisions between ships and cetaceans) and at the same time enquire about your knowledge of incidents. Also, and most importantly, we want to remind everybody about the global IWC ship strike database. The International Whaling Commission (IWC) is addressing the problem of ship strikes since many years and has taken a leading role in this issue (see http://iwc.int/ship-strikes) It's Scientific Committee (SC) considers methods of estimating the number of whales killed from ship strikes; it is also fostering the dialogue between researchers, authorities and the shipping industry and thus takes part in developing mitigation measures. The Conservation Committee (CC) has established a dedicated Ship Strikes Working Group to develop a policy framework for mitigation of ship strike events and to co-ordinate work between member governments. Both SC and CC provide a forum to report ship strike cases, and the measures being taken within countries to reduce and record incidences of ship strikes. The IWC is also working in conjunction with other international bodies such as the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) as well as with shipping associations, NGOs and regional groups. The IWC has developed a global database to report collisions between vessels and whales. The database is open for anyone to submit data on collision events, including both information on whales (e.g., species, size, observed injuries, etc.) as well as on vessels. The objectives of the database are to deliver estimates of mortality and injuries, to help detect trends over time, to allow better modeling of risk factors (e.g., vessel type, speed, size), and to identify high risk or unsuspected problem areas. The database provides an on-going facility for collecting new information, and most importantly, it relies on scientists and mariners providing information. Therefore, any report of a ship strike is particularly important. With this communication, we are looking for new records and would like to invite any of you with information regarding collision cases or evidence of animals with clear sign of ship strike to compile the online database at: https://portal.iwc.int/shipstrike. Such information can come from witness reports you may have heard of, but also from (your own) scientific publications, etc. Please note that the database has recently received a thorough revision and has a complete new design, to make it more user-friendly. The course will include live experiences with the marine mammals at Moss Landing Marine Labs. This class will instruct students in captive marine mammal husbandry (care and maintenance), training, basic physiology, an overview of common research topics and techniques, as well as public display, education, and current issues in marine mammalogy. Students will intern at least one day at the lab assisting in the care of research-trained California sea lions. They will also gain experience in developing a resume, job interviews, and public presentations. *Tuition:* $840 + $39 campus fee per semester is payable to CSUMB-EE *per class*. An additional $50 lab fee is payable to MLML on the first day of class.
