Abstract Following heavy precipitation, we observed an intense algal bloom in the St. Lawrence Estuary (SLE) that coincided with an unusually high mortality of several species of marine fish, birds and mammals, including species designated at risk. The algal species was identified as Alexandrium tamarense and was determined to contain a potent mixture of paralytic shellfish toxins (PST). Significant levels of PST were found in the liver and/or gastrointestinal contents of several carcasses tested as well as in live planktivorous fish, molluscs and plankton samples collected during the bloom. This provided strong evidence for the trophic transfer of PST resulting in mortalities of multiple wildlife species. This conclusion was strengthened by the sequence of mortalities, which followed the drift of the bloom along the coast of the St. Lawrence Estuary. No other cause of mortality was identified in the majority of animals examined at necropsy. Reports of marine fauna presenting signs of neurological dysfunction were also supportive of exposure to these neurotoxins. The event reported here represents the first well-documented case of multispecies mass mortality of marine fish, birds and mammals linked to a PST-producing algal bloom. Sci., 4:121. doi: 10.3389/fmars.2017.00121 Abstract - Managing marine species effectively requires spatially and temporally explicit knowledge of their density and distribution. Habitat-based density models, a type of species distribution model (SDM) that uses habitat covariates to estimate species density and distribution patterns, are increasingly used for marine management and conservation because they provide a tool for assessing potential impacts (e.g., from fishery bycatch, ship strikes, anthropogenic sound) over a variety of spatial and temporal scales. The abundance and distribution of many pelagic species exhibit substantial seasonal variability, highlighting the importance of predicting density specific to the season of interest. This is particularly true in dynamic regions like the California Current, where significant seasonal shifts in cetacean distribution have been documented at coarse scales. Finer scale (10 km) habitat-based density models were previously developed for many cetacean species occurring in this region, but most models were limited to summer/fall. The objectives of our study were two-fold: 1) develop spatially-explicit density estimates for winter/spring to support management applications, and 2) compare model-predicted density and distribution patterns to previously developed summer/fall model results in the context of species ecology. We used a well-established Generalized Additive Modeling framework to develop cetacean SDMs based on 20 California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) shipboard surveys conducted during winter and spring between 2005 and 2015. Models were fit for short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis delphis), Dall's porpoise (Phocoenoides dalli), and humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae). Model performance was evaluated based on a variety of established metrics, including the percentage of explained deviance, ratios of observed to predicted density, and visual inspection of predicted and observed distributions. Final models were used to produce spatial grids of average species density and spatially-explicit measures of uncertainty. Results provide the first fine scale (10 km) density predictions for these species during the cool seasons and reveal distribution patterns that are markedly different from summer/fall, thus providing novel insights into species ecology and quantitative data for the seasonal assessment of potential anthropogenic impacts. Nowhere to go: Noise impact assessments for marine mammal populations with high site fidelity. /Endangered Species Research/.* ABSTRACT. As awareness of the effects of anthropogenic noise on marine mammals has grown, research has broadened from evaluating physiological responses, including injury and mortality, to considering effects on behavior and acoustic communication. Most mitigation efforts attempt to minimize injury by enabling animals to move away as noise levels are increased gradually. Recent experiences demonstrate that this approach is inadequate or even counterproductive for small, localized marine mammal populations, for which displacement of animals may itself cause harm. Seismic surveys within the ranges of harbor porpoise /Phocoena phocoena/ in California and Ma¯ui dolphin /Cephalorhynchus hectori maui/ in New Zealand highlight the need to explicitly consider biological risks posed by displacement during survey planning, monitoring, and mitigation. Consequences of displacement are poorly understood, but likely include increased stress and reduced foraging success, with associated effects on survival and reproduction. In some cases, such as the Critically Endangered Ma¯ui dolphin, displacement by seismic activities risks exposing the remaining 55 dolphins to bycatch in nearby fisheries. Similar concerns about military and industrial activities exist for island-associated species such as melon-headed whales /Peponocephala electra/ in Hawai’i; shelf-break associated species such as Cuvier’s beaked whales /Ziphius cavirostris/ off the US Atlantic coast, and whales foraging in coastal habitats, such as the Critically Endangered western gray whale /Eschrichtius robustus/. We present an expanded framework for considering disturbance effects that acknowledges scientific uncertainty, providing managers and operators a more robust means of assessing and avoiding potential harm associated with both displacement and direct effects of intense anthropogenic noise exposure. -- Brandon L. Literature reports a variety of animal reactions to human noise (from apparently null or negligible to strong). However, conclusive results on its effects on marine mammals at individual and population level are still lacking. In 2015, the Italian Environmental Impact Assessment Commission mandated seismic operators apply a standard scientific protocol comparing marine mammal presence before, during, and after offshore seismic survey. For 60 days before and after the survey, marine mammals are monitored using visual and acoustic methods. One or more acoustic autonomous recorders, depending on area size, must also be deployed throughout the three phases for continuous monitoring. Consistent data gathered from many surveys will enable robust statistical analysis of results. Diffusion of this monitoring method internationally would improve the study of far-reaching, intense, low frequency noise. New review paper: Applying welfare science to dolphins

Dear Colleagues, We are very pleased to be able to share with you our publication in the current issue of Animal Welfare: Clegg, I. L. K., van Elk, C. E., & Delfour, F. (2017). Applying welfare science to bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Animal Welfare, 26, 165-176. This is the first review of the applications of welfare science to dolphins, with implications for captive cetaceans in general. The work highlights potential welfare measures from the behaviour, health and cognition disciplines of cetology, and suggests areas of future research. Abstract Animal welfare science is a burgeoning field, but research on cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) is lacking. Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are the most well-known and studied cetaceans, particularly in captivity, and thus are used in this review as a model for other cetacean species. Despite the public interest and need for such research, studies specifically investigating dolphin welfare are lacking. This review uses the three broad categories of behaviour, health, and cognition, to discuss how dolphin welfare has been assessed thus far, and could be assessed in future. We present welfare indicators validated in other species that could be applied to dolphins, including innovative measures such as cognitive appraisal of emotions. We provide a summary of practical recommendations for validating the indicators of bottlenose dolphin welfare. This paper aims to stimulate further research into dolphin welfare which could improve the lives of the animals themselves and ultimately support regulatory decisions. We recommend uniting expertise in cetology and welfare science in order to develop a holistic approach to dolphin welfare assessment. NEW PAPER: Ocean Wanderers - Extralimital Encounters with Bowhead Whales (Balaena mysticetus) in Temperate European Shallow Waters

Aquatic Mammals 43(3), 279-288, DOI 10.1578/AM.43.3.2017.279 Abstract Reports of bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus)outside the Arctic Circle are scarce. On 15 May 2016, a juvenile bowhead whale was recorded in shallow water in Mount’s Bay (Cornwall, UK) much further south than the species’normal distribution. Fifteen months earlier, another such sighting was made involving a juvenile bowhead whale in the shallow water of an offshore island, St Martin’s (Isles of Scilly, Cornwall), only 60km from Mount’s Bay. Other observations of suspected/confirmed immature bowhead whales include (1)an unconfirmed sighting involving a whale without a dorsal fin off Cornwall (13May 2016), (2) a confirmed sighting off France (10May 2016), and (3) a confirmed sighting in Carlingford Lough (border of Northern Ireland/Republic of Ireland; 29 May 2016). These extralimital encounters present the first confirmed sightings of bowhead whales within temperate European waters. Apart from the whale sighted in 2015, the sightings in 2016 probably all involve the same juvenile whale. Indeed, photographs depicting natural scars/marks suggest that the Carlingford Lough bowhead whale is the same individual as the Mount’s Bay. The whale was displaying behaviour indicative of ram feeding in a sheltered, shallow bay (< 10 m water depth). Do these records present vagrant animals from nearby endangered Arctic stocks? Whatever triggered these immature bowhead whales to venture well outside the Arctic Circle remains unknown, yet these observations suggest an unexpected adaptability to foraging in temperate shallow waters. Dear Colleagues We are pleased to announce a new paper, reporting the earliest-known fin whale, *Balaenoptera physalus*, from the Early Pleistocene of California. Tsai, C.-H., and R. W. Boessenecker. 2017. The earliest-known fin whale, *Balaenoptera physalus*, from the Early Pleistocene of Northern California, U.S.A. Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. DOI: 10.1080/02724634.2017.1306536. Summary We report a fossil tympanic bulla from the Rio Dell Formation of Northern California, USA. The morphology of tympanic bulla in baleen whales (Cetacea, Mysticeti) is highly diagnostic and this fossil is virtually identical to the extant fin whale *Balaenoptera physalus*. Given its geological age, early Pleistocene (~1.3–0.95 Ma), this specimen currently represents the oldest known fossil record of the extant fin whale. Accordingly, this find provides insight into the early evolution of the speciose *Balaenoptera*. A marine mammal necropsy workshop is organized by the Department of Veterinary Pathology (University of Liege, Belgium), the Laboratory of Applied Bioacoustics LAB (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Spain) and the UMS Pelagis, Centre de Recherche sur les Mammifères Marins (University of La Rochelle, France).
