Hi All, Just sending out a reminder. At the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine we are offering a few exciting online courses in the upcoming Summer and Fall semesters. We still have spots in our summer course. Class begins May 9th. Academic registration will close May 10th and CE (continuing education) registration will close May 13th. Summer Semester: Manatee Health and Conservation is an online course (3 credits) that will provide students (upper level undergraduate and graduate) and professionals (with an AA or higher degree) with a detailed overview of manatee natural history, health assessment, and research findings as well as explore conservation issues. Research project for Honours student in Hermanus, South Africa

Dear all, The South African Shark Conservancy (SASC), in collaboration with Sea Search, is seeking an Honours student to conduct a cetacean-focused research project based out of Hermanus, South Africa. Since 2012 SASC has collected opportunistic data on the spatial and temporal occurrence and behaviour of cetaceans in Walker Bay on the southwest coast of South Africa. This study will investigate how the number of species, relative abundance, and behaviour of a variety of cetaceans varies across seasons and years. The student will be required to analyse existing survey data and participate in boat-based monitoring surveys to supplement existing data. This project will be conducted in conjunction with Southern Right Charters, our commercial boat-based whale watching partner, and with the co-supervision of Dr. Els Vermeulen from Sea Search. SASC is unable to provide living expenses for students undertaking these projects, and a project fee of US$1720/month is charged to cover all costs associated with accommodation, transportation, supervision, paperwork and research-related expenses. Students are encouraged to apply for university funding to offset project costs (discount will be made for South African citizens). As a student you will be expected to undertake additional internship activities as they arise, and are required to spend a minimum of three (3) calendar months at SASC. All data collected during research projects remains the joint Intellectual Property (IP) of the student and SASC as per our standard Project Collaboration Agreement. MaRVEN report out: Environmental effects of noise from marine renewable energy

Wilson, B. Wood, D. (2015). MaRVEN - Environmental impacts of noise, vibrations and electromagnetic emissions from marine renewable energy - Final study report. European Commission, Directorate General for Research and Innovation; Brussels, Belgium. Abstract The construction and operation of marine renewable energy developments (MREDs) will lead to, among other things, the emission of electromagnetic fields (EMF), underwater sound, and vibrations into the marine environment. Knowledge on these pressures and associated effects has been increasing over the past decade. Yet, many open questions with regard to the potential for MRED to impact on marine life remain. These information gaps pose challenges to the planning and deployment of MREDs. To address this, the European Union (EU) Commission, Directorate-General for Research and Innovation commissioned a study of the environmental effects of noise, vibrations and electromagnetic emissions from MREDs (Marine Renewable Energy, Vibration, Electromagnetic fields and Noise - MaRVEN). MaRVEN provides a review of the available literature related to environmental impacts of marine renewable energy devices and an in-depth analysis of studies on the environmental effects of noise, vibrations and electromagnetic emissions during installation and operation of wind, wave and tidal energy devices. The current norms and standards related to noise, vibrations and EMF were reviewed. On-site measurements and field experiments to fill priority knowledge gaps and to validate and build on the results obtained in reviews were undertaken. Great Australian Bight Right Whale Study Research Intern 2016 Curtin University, Centre for Marine Science and Technology The Curtin University Great Australian Bight Right Whale Study (GABRWS) is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to assist as a research intern during the 2016 season. This position is available for 6 weeks: July 15 - August 31 2016. We ask that intern is able to commit for the entire period. This study contributes to the long term monitoring of southern right whales in the Great Australian Bight, South Australia, now in its 26th year. Duties will include cliff based census of aggregation area, photo identification, data entry, matching of photo ID to the long term catalogue. There may also be opportunity for involvement in underwater acoustics program and theodolite behavioural study. Work is completed at the Head of Bight, in the Great Australian Bight South Australia. This area is remote and isolated with limited resources. This is an unpaid position and you will be responsible for the cost of your own transport to and from Ceduna, South Australia. Flights arrive daily to Ceduna from Adelaide, where you will be met and driven to the study site (approx. 3.5 hour drive). Food, travel and accommodation expenses will be covered during the internship. Accommodation is very basic and includes shared kitchen/living/office space and a private room in the form of a converted sea container with bed, shower and toilet. Short-term bottlenose dolphin volunteer opportunity NZ

Bottlenose Dolphin Behavioural Volunteer Position in Auckland, New Zealand A volunteer is required to assist with a MSc study investigating the behaviour of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) at Great Barrier Island (GBI) and the Auckland coastline, New Zealand. This MSc project is part of the ongoing research of the Coastal-Marine Research Group (C-MRG) at Massey University Albany, Auckland. (http://www.coastalmarineresearchgroup.com/) The primary aim of this study is to assess the behaviour and acoustic repertoire of nationally endangered bottlenose dolphins in an area of zero tourism pressure. DATES: A volunteer is currently needed from 1st June 2016 for two months. The first month will consist of full-time fieldwork and data processing followed by a month of data processing (full-time or part-time - TBC). A commitment of two months is required OR a minimum commitment of one month is required and priority will be given to those who can commit for the full two months. LOCATION: Auckland, New Zealand FIELDWORK: The volunteer position entails assisting during field surveys and analysis of bottlenose dolphin behavioural videos and photo-identification (photo-id). The successful applicant will gain valuable experience in conducting marine mammal field research, identifying individuals based on dorsal fin characteristics, and the use of databases for archiving field data. Fieldwork is physically and at times mentally demanding but it is a great opportunity to: gain knowledge in visual cetacean surveying, get hands-on field experience (in relation to survey techniques, photo-id, behavioural observations) and improve your practical skills. Fieldwork can vary between weekdays and weekends. Assistants therefore need to be available full-time including weekends and be prepared to work long hours with early starts. During GBI trips, we will be based on the island for an average of 4 days, once a month and conducting surveys from a 10m Osprey vessel. Coastal surveys will be conducted over 4 non-consecutive days of each month from a 4.8m Stabicraft vessel. Both GBI trips and coastal surveys are weather dependent. RESPONSIBILITIES: . Assisting with; boat-based photo-id surveys from a small vessel and collecting environmental/video based behavioural data (25% of the time). DISCLAIMER: while the best efforts will be made to ensure that the participant gains field work experience, due to the nature of the project, time in the field cannot be guaranteed. . Analysis of photo-id and behavioural video data in the lab; including assistance with photo sorting, grading, and matching of photos, maintenance of a long-term photo-id catalogue, identifying behavioural events on video, and data entry. Research assistants should be prepared to work long days in the office analysing of photographs and matching them with the photo-identification catalogue (75% of the time). As this is a volunteer position, there is unfortunately no monetary compensation or living provisions. The successful candidate should arrange their own accommodation in Auckland, living expenses, travel costs and visa. Accommodation and travel expenses to/from GBI will be covered. PREREQUISITES: . Be reliable, adaptable, hardworking and patient as fieldwork is highly weather dependent . Have a mature and independent attitude towards marine mammal research . Speak fluent English . Be sociable, enthusiastic and have a positive attitude . Strong interest in the marine environment and conservation . Participants must be able to swim and should be comfortable working on small boats . Participants must be comfortable living out of a small backpack (with the exception of food) for several days (during GBI trips) QUALIFICATIONS: . Coll Perske Memorial Fund for Marine Mammals Student Research Award (National Marine Mammal Foundation, San Diego, CA)

*Coll Perske Memorial Fund for Marine Mammals Student Research Award: Call for Applications (Due April 26, 2016)* On April 28, 2014, we lost an amazing friend and colleague, Coll Gordon Perske. To honor Coll’s life and unwavering dedication to marine mammals, the National Marine Mammal Foundation established the Coll Perske Memorial Fund for Marine Mammals. The mission of the fund is to improve the lives of marine mammals, with a focus on California sea lions, through scientific research, education, and promotion of ocean stewardship. The first project launched by the Coll Perske Memorial Fund is the Perske Pinniped Health Project. The Perske Pinniped Health Project will focus on research that continues to enhance the health and welfare of all pinnipeds, with a special emphasis on the California sea lion. *Program Description* This year, the Coll Perske Memorial Fund committee has elected to provide a student stipend of $2000.00 to a qualified undergraduate, recently graduated, or graduate student interested in marine mammal physiology and training. The study chosen for the Perske Pinniped Health project this year is a sea lion diving physiology and training project that Coll Perske helped collect data for while working as a U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program sea lion trainer. For this study pre and post dive blood samples were acquired voluntarily from 4 adult male sea lions after diving to various depths (500 ft, 600 ft, 800 ft and 900 ft). Blood samples were then analyzed using iSTAT (CG4, CG8) to obtain blood gas information. The award recipient will work with Dr. Sam Ridgway to evaluate the methodology and data previously collected for this project. In addition to working with Dr. Ridgway, the student will also have the opportunity to spend time working with the sea lion training staff, and some of the animals that participated in the data collection for this study. By the end of their time onsite, the student will have gained exposure to working with the National Marine Mammal Foundation and the U.S Navy Marine Mammal Program. They will also have gained a better understanding of marine mammal training as a research tool. It is our expectation the award recipient will present the results of this project by the end of their time onsite, as well as at a related conference within the following year. Ideally, this project will also result in a publication in an appropriate peer reviewed scientific journal. Seeking research assistants for the Cetacean Research Unit, Western Australia from May to November 2016

Program: The South West Marine Research program is a long-term, multi-faceted project on the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins of South West Australia. This program is based in Bunbury (south of Perth) and is a collaboration between Murdoch University Cetacean Research Unit (www.mucru.org<http://www.mucru.org/>) and numerous industry and non-profit partners. The research focuses on dolphin population dynamics, abundance, social structure and behaviour, habitat use, conservation genetics, effects of human activity and foraging ecology. http://mucru.org/our-research/research-projects/south-west-marine-research-… Position: Here, I am specifically seeking research volunteers to assist with data collection and processing. Long-term data will be used to investigate effects of human activity on the population of bottlenose dolphin in this area, in order to aid in future conservation and management efforts. Fieldwork is conducted from Busselton to Binningup within a 540 km2 area consisting of coastal beaches, inshore bays, estuarine inlets and a river. Using a rigid sampling design, this research is conducted year round via standardised line transect surveys (up to 5 nm offshore) from a small research vessel. Due to the training required, applicants must be willing to the project full-time for a minimum of two months. Applicants willing to participate for an extended duration will be given preference. Preferred skills/traits: 1. Enrolled in or completed a degree in biology, marine science, animal behaviour or a related field. 2. Previous field experience with wildlife (field data collection, photo-identification, boat handling skills). 3. Be enthusiastic, team oriented and have a positive attitude as well as a genuine interest in wildlife science. 4. No history of debilitating seasickness. PLoS ONE 11(4): e0153320. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0153320 *Abstract* A decade of visual and acoustic detections of marine megafauna around offshore Oil & Gas (O&G) installations in the North and Irish Seas are presented. Marine megafauna activity was monitored visually and acoustically by Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) qualified and experienced Marine Mammal Observers (MMO) and Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) Operators respectively, with real-time towed PAM in combination with industry standard software, PAMGuard. Monitoring was performed during routine O&G industrial operations for underwater noise mitigation purposes, and to ensure adherence to regulatory guidelines. Incidental sightings by off-effort MMOs and installation crew were also reported. Visual and acoustic monitoring spanned 55 non-consecutive days between 2004 and 2014. A total of 47 marine mammal sightings were recorded by MMOs on dedicated watch, and 10 incidental sightings of marine megafauna were reported over 10 years. Species included: harbour porpoise (/Phocoena phocoena/), Atlantic white-sided dolphin (/Lagenorhynchus acutus/), white beaked dolphin (/Lagenorhynchus albirostris/), common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), minke whale (/Balaenoptera acutorostrata/), common seal (/Phoca vitulina/), grey seal (/Halichoerus grypus/) and, basking shark (/Cetorhinus maximus/). Passive Acoustic Monitoring was conducted on two occasions in 2014; 160 PAM hours over 12 days recorded a total of 308 individual clicks identified as harbour porpoises. These appear to be the first such acoustic detections obtained from a North Sea drilling rig whilst using a typically configured hydrophone array designed for towing in combination with real-time PAMGuard software. This study provides evidence that marine megafauna are present around mobile and stationary offshore O&G installations during routine operational activities. On this basis, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) for decommissioning O&G platforms should be carried-out on a case-by-case basis, and must include provisions for hitherto overlooked marine megafauna. Dear Listserv Members, On behalf of Stan's surviving family and the Marine Mammal Behavior and Cognition lab of the University of Southern Mississippi, it is with heavy hearts that the former and current students of Dr. Stan Kuczaj inform the marine mammal community of Stan's passing, April 14, 2016. Stan's openness and love of all animals and people created an extended family that spreads across nations and oceans. We mourn the loss of this intrepid spirit. As soon as we have more specific details about how we will celebrate his life and the vast legacy he left behind, we will post another announcement.
