DOI:10.1093/jmammal/gyw074 Abstract: Diving mammals use blubber for a variety of structural and physiological functions, including buoyancy, streamlining, thermoregulation, and energy storage. Estimating blubber stores provides proxies for body condition, nutritional status, and health. Blubber stores may vary topographically within individuals, across seasons, and with age, sex, and reproductive status; therefore, a single full-depth blubber biopsy does not provide an accurate measure of blubber depth, and additional biopsies are limited because they result in open wounds. We examined high-resolution ultrasound as a noninvasive method for assessing blubber stores by sampling blubber depth at 11 locations on beluga whales in Alaska. Blubber mass was estimated as a proportion of body mass (40% from the literature) and compared to a function of volume calculated using ultrasound blubber depth measurements in a truncated cone. Blubber volume was converted to total and mass-specific blubber mass estimates based on the density of beluga blubber. There was no significant difference in mean total blubber mass between the 2 estimates (R2 = 0.88); however, body mass alone predicted only 68% of the variation in mass-specific blubber stores in juveniles, 7% for adults in the fall, and 33% for adults in the spring. Mass-specific blubber stores calculated from ultrasound measurements were highly variable. Adults had significantly greater blubber stores in the fall (0.48 Å} 0.02 kg/kgMB ) than in the spring (0.33 Å} 0.02 kg/kgMB ). There was no seasonal effect in juveniles. High-resolution ultrasound is a more powerful, noninvasive method for assessing blubber stores in wild belugas, allowing for precise measurements at multiple locations. The project is funded by INSITE – the INfluence of man-made Structures In the Ecosystem – an oil and gas industry-sponsored initiative committed to developing the independent scientific evidence-base needed to improve understanding of the influence of man-made structures on the ecosystem of the North Sea. The project, led by Dr Debbie Russell at SMRU, aims to answer two key questions: (1) What is the overlap between, and influence of, anthropogenic structures and apex predators (seabirds and marine mammals) in the North Sea? and (2) Using telemetry data and knowledge of the overlap between man-made structures and predator distributions, what is the prevalence of the use of man-made structures for foraging by seals and seabirds in the North Sea. The project, “Man-made structures and Apex Predators: Spatial interactions and overlap (MAPS)”, is a collaboration with The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), Centre for Research into Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) and IMARES, Netherlands. The appointed post-doc will play a key role in answering both of both these questions. To address the first question they will conduct habitat preference analyses. Addressing the second question will involve analyses of telemetry data from both seals and seabirds. Candidates with a statistical or modelling background are encouraged to apply. For the right candidate, a Masters by research (MSc ) may also be a possibility. The student will be supervised by Dr Liz Hawkins (Dolphin Research Australia) and Professor Peter Harrison (SCU). Project The project will assess the sympatric associations between two coastal dolphin species; Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) and Australian humpback dolphins (Sousa sahulensis), in the Moreton Bay Marine Park, Queensland. The project will assess three years of data collected as part of the Moreton Bay Dolphin Research Project. The student will assess the ecological relationships between species occurrence and environmental parameters using spatial and statistical analysis techniques. Cetacean Honours Projects at Curtin Uni, Perth, Australia

Cetacean Honours Projects Available at Centre for Marine Science & Technology (CMST) Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia We have several one-year Honours projects available on killer whales, southern right whales and pygmy blue whales, commencing mid-year, i.e., July 2016. (Note that enrolment can be delayed until February 2017 if preferred.) A) Killer Whale Topics: For several years, CMST has been in the Bremer Canyon, together with Riggs Australia and Naturaliste Charters, photographing killer whales, Australia’s top ocean predator. Some individuals have distinct markings, and we’ve gotten to recognise these individuals over the years. The Honours projects will have access to several seasons of photo-ID pictures (photographs of dorsal fins, eye patches and saddle patches) and help to grow our database of photo-ID shots. We also have a category of photos from each year showing mothers and calves together, which will be helpful for these projects. There is a potential opportunity for additional fieldwork in early 2017, to be confirmed. Based on this database, several Honours projects are available on: 1. Mark-recapture photo-ID, visitation patterns, resightings of the same individuals, estimation of the size of the population of killer whales in the Bremer Canyon for each season of data, and comparison across the years to identify any trends. 2. Demographics and association patterns; determining the numbers of adult males, adult females and/or juveniles, to analyse population demographics, and to identify association patterns. 3. Distribution patterns, establishing a spatio-temporal grid of sightings, and correlation with environmental data such as bathymetry, gradient, sea surface temperature, and chlorophyll-a from satellite remote sensing. The above projects will be supervised by Christine Erbe, Chandra Salgado Kent and David Antoine. B) Southern Right Whale and Pygmy Blue Whale Topics: Iconic cetacean species, such as humpback, blue, and southern right whales are listed internationally as high priority species for conservation due to their vulnerable/endangered status. These whales use southwestern Australia for migrating, resting and/or calving each year. While the region is currently relatively pristine, it is experiencing increasing human pressures associated with a growing population. Over the past eight years, CMST has partnered with Western Whale Research and Dunsborough Coast and Land Care on the Southwestern Ecology Whale Study (http://souwest.org <http://souwest.org/>). SouWEST endeavours to contribute to securing the long-term future of these whales by improving the scientific foundation for conservation management and species protection in the region. A sub-project of SouWEST focuses on using photos of whales to identify long-term use and spatial extent by individuals in southwest coastal waters. There are two Honours projects available to contribute to this sub-project, which would involve identifying individuals in a large archive of photographs collected since 1994. There is a potential for additional fieldwork in early 2017 to supplement the photo archive. 1. Southern right whale residency and site fidelity in southwestern Australia 2. Pygmy blue whale residency and site fidelity in southwestern Australia These two projects will be supervised by Chandra Salgado Kent and Chris Burton. Honours projects at Curtin University run for 11 months full-time, at the end of which a thesis must be submitted for examination. The above projects are not available on a part-time basis. Honours Dissertations attract tuition fees. We do NOT have tuition fee scholarships for the above projects, hence the applicants must be able to cover their tuition and living costs in Perth. Dear Marmamers: The following paper on the use of area of Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) has recently been published: Oshima, J. E. de F. & Santos, M. C. de O. 2016. Guiana dolphin home range analysis based on 11 years of photo-identification research in a tropical estuary. Journal of Mammalogy, 97(2): 599-610. Abstract: Home range studies provide significant insights on social organization and interactions, limiting resources and habitat use. Knowledge on home range and habitat use by Guiana dolphins, *Sotalia guianensis*, is still scarce. The aim of this study was to identify and analyze individual’s home ranges of Guiana dolphins in the Cananeia Estuary (~25o03S, 47o55W), located in southeastern Brazil. Photo-identification efforts were conducted between 2000 and 2010. From a total of 135,918 pictures taken, 34,086 (25%) were useful for individual identification. Two- hundred and five individuals were cataloged based on permanent notches along dorsal fin borders. Of the cataloged individuals, 31 had been identified a minimum of 20 times, on distinct dates, prior to this analysis. Home ranges were estimated for these individuals using 4 methods: minimum convex polygon (MCP), adaptive kernel with least-squares cross-validation (AKLSCV), fixed kernel with reference bandwidth (FKHREF), and fixed kernel with least-squares cross-validation (FKLSCV). The sizes of the estimated home ranges varied between 2.2 and 43.8 km2 (*X *= 17.5 km2) with MCP, between 0.8 and 82.5 km2 (*X *= 15.6 km2) with AKLSCV, between 3.9 and 244 km2 (*X *= 72.4 km2) with FKHREF, and from 0.6 to 70.6 km2 (*X *= 13.5 km2) with FKLSCV. Significant differences in size and shape of the generated areas were detected when comparing the 4 tested methods. Variation of individual’s home range sizes and an extensive overlap among home ranges of different Guiana dolphins in the Cananeia Estuary provide evidence that the region supports important resources for this species. Therefore, preventing habitat loss in this region is essential to guaranteeing the persistence of this population. Dear All, We are pleased to announce a new opportunity of scientific training on cetacean monitoring techniques in the Sicily Channel (Mediterranean Sea). Reservation for the DOLPHIN SURVEY 2016 are now open! The Survey aims to increase knowledge about the presence, abundance and distribution on dolphin species, with particular regard to bottlenose dolphin. The project area is located in the waters off Agrigento Province and Gela basins, where dedicated surveys on cetacean are nowadays scarce, even if these waters are particularly rich; bottlenose dolphins, short-beaked common dolphins and striped dolphins are particularly abundant in the project area. RESEARCH METHODS include: • Cetaceans monitoring in the study area conducted daily on board of an inflatable boat with a fiberglass keel, 5.40 meters long, equipped with a 40 HP 4-strokesoutboard engine. • Photo-identification activity used to obtain dolphins abundance estimates, and information about their movements and social structure. • Modelling to investigate distribution and habitat use of dolphins. • Groups size and behaviour monitoring and subsequent analysis using GIS software. • Monitoring of other marine species, including turtle, tuna, swordfish and seabirds during sea-survey. • Land-based survey (occasionally) • Observation of the interaction between dolphins and human activities, mainly trawl fishing Participant at the research expeditions will work side-by-side with researchers contributing to: - boat-based and land-based daily surveys - photo-identification activity - field data collection - data statistical processing and analysis The scientific training will be consolidated through lectures on: - Mediterranean cetacean species recognition - Cetaceans biology, evolution and anatomical adaptations - Bioacoustics - Mediterranean cetacean species distribution and habitat use - Cetaceans threats and protection status - Protocol and designs sampling - Distance sampling - Modeling of cetaceans distribution - Photo identification and applications - Photographic data processing (practice) - Data processing by GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Summer Research Expeditions are essential to support our project. It does not require any specific preparation, nor scientific or nautical experience are required to participants: you only need spirit of adaptation and enthusiasm. Expeditions start every week from June to August. Weekly contribution is 390,00 € and it includes accommodation, daily survey at sea and scientific training at land base. The cost excludes board. Booking is possible for one week or more and maximum 6 participants for week will be accepted. Participation is open only to adults (over 18 years).
