We look forward to hearing from you! 1) Voluntary Education and Awareness Assistant opportunity in Cardigan Bay for the 2015 summer season The Sea Watch Foundation <http://www.seawatchfoundation.org.uk/> is seeking an education and awareness assistant for the 2015 season. This position will suit a volunteer who has a strong interest in marine conservation and recognises the importance of educating and raising awareness by involving the public. The assistant will be responsible in aiding the Sightings Officer with the following duties: · Promoting and organising the National Whale and Dolphin Watch 2015 event (25thJuly to 2nd August) · Participating in presentations and creating activities to take to local schools · Researching and writing articles · Creating educational/promotional materials (posters, displays, flyers) · Assisting in the organisation of training courses · Social networking (Facebook, Twitter, website) · Raising Sea Watch Foundations profile locally (organising events, manning the Sea Watch stand on the pier at weekends, etc.) · Interacting with the media (radio, TV and newspapers) · Representing Sea Watch at public events within the UK generally · Liaising with the Adopt a Dolphin Coordinator for the promotion of Sea Watch Foundation and Adopt a Dolphin The Education and Awareness Assistant will also have some opportunity to be involved in the fieldwork aspects of the Cardigan Bay Monitoring Project <http://www.seawatchfoundation.org.uk/cardigan-bay-monitoring-project/> (land-based and boat-based surveys). This project, undertaken on behalf of Natural Resources Wales, manages the conservation of a resident population of bottlenose dolphins, the largest in the UK. Monitoring of harbour porpoise and grey seal populations is also part of the project. The field season will run from April to October 2015 and has been split into one period of 6 weeks followed by three periods of 7 weeks. One assistant is required for each period. However, preference will be given to those who can stay for more than one period, including the entire seven-month field season. The assistant will be based in New Quay, West Wales. Accommodation is provided at a rate of approximately £60/week in a house sharing with the research interns. The assistant is responsible for their own travel and living expenses, but it is generally quite easy to obtain part-time paid work in the area if required. New publication on cochlear morphology and high frequency hearing adaptations in toothed whales

Dear colleagues, We are pleased to announce the publication of our recent paper: Morell, M., Lenoir, M., Shadwick, R.E.., Jauniaux, T., Dabin, W., Hiemstra, S., Ferreira, M., Maestre, I., Degollada, E., Hernandez-Milian, G., Cazevieille, C., Fortuño, J.M., Vogl, W., Puel, J., André, M. 2015. Ultrastructure of the odontocete organ of Corti: scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Journal of Comparative Neurology 523:431–448 Abstract: The morphological study of the Odontocete organ of Corti, together with possible alterations associated with damage from sound exposure, represents a key conservation approach to assess the effects of acoustic pollution on marine ecosystems. By collaborating with stranding networks from several European countries, 150 ears from 13 species of Odontocetes were collected and analyzed by scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy. Based on our analyses, we first describe and compare Odontocete cochlear structures and then propose a diagnostic method to identify inner ear alterations in stranded individuals. The two species analyzed by TEM (Phocoena phocoena and Stenella coeruleoalba) showed morphological characteristics in the lower basal turn of high-frequency hearing species. Among other striking features, outer hair cell bodies were extremely small and were strongly attached to Deiters cells. Such morphological characteristics, shared with horseshoe bats, suggest that there has been convergent evolution of sound reception mechanisms among echolocating species. Despite possible autolytic artifacts due to technical and experimental constraints, the SEM analysis allowed us to detect the presence of scarring processes resulting from the disappearance of outer hair cells from the epithelium. In addition, in contrast to the rapid decomposition process of the sensory epithelium after death (especially of the inner hair cells), the tectorial membrane appeared to be more resistant to post-mortem autolysis effects. Recent publication on practical cumulative impact management

Dear Marmammers, I'd like to announce the recent publication of the following paper: Wright, A.J. & Kyhn, L.A. 2014. Practical management of cumulative anthropogenic impacts with working marine examples. Conservation Biology. (Published online: 29th Nov 2014 DOI: 10.1111/cobi.12425.) Abstract: Human pressure on the environment is expanding and intensifying, especially in coastal and offshore areas. Major contributors to this are the current push for offshore renewable energy sources, which are thought of as environmentally friendly sources of power, as well as the continued demand for petroleum. Human disturbances, including the noise almost ubiquitously associated with human activity, are likely to increase the incidence, magnitude, and duration of adverse effects on marine life, including stress responses. Stress responses have the potential to induce fitness consequences for individuals, which add to more obvious directed takes (e.g., hunting or fishing) to increase the overall population-level impact. To meet the requirements of marine spatial planning and ecosystem-based management, many efforts are ongoing to quantify the cumulative impacts of all human actions on marine species or populations. Meanwhile, regulators face the challenge of managing these accumulating and interacting impacts with limited scientific guidance. We believe there is scientific support for capping the level of impact for (at a minimum) populations in decline or with unknown statuses. This cap on impact can be facilitated through implementation of regular application cycles for project authorization or improved programmatic and aggregated impact assessments that simultaneously consider multiple projects. Cross-company collaborations and a better incorporation of uncertainty into decision making could also help limit, if not reduce, cumulative impacts of multiple human activities. These simple management steps may also form the basis of a rudimentary form of marine spatial planning and could be used in support of future ecosystem-based management efforts. SEACR MARINE RESEARCH INTERNSHIPS – SUMMER 2015 The Society for Ecological and Coastal Research - SEACR - is a non-profit organization, established in 1998, dedicated to scientific research on the ecology of near-shore marine systems. SEACR is sponsoring several long-term ongoing research projects on gray whale ecology in Clayoquot Sound, British Columbia, Canada, with some exciting additions this summer. The projects are organized and run by members of the Whale Research Lab of the University of Victoria, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada (www.whalelab.geog.uvic.ca) INTERNSHIPS Enthusiastic individuals with a keen interest in nature and science are invited to discover the challenges of marine field research along Canada's coastal rainforest through SEACR's Marine Research Intern Program! MRIP is a volunteer program where Research Interns assist experienced and dedicated marine biologists and ecologists with their field research. New publication on grey seal predation on harbour seals

Grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) predation on harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) on the island of Helgoland, Germany. J. Sea Res. 1–4. doi:10.1016/j.seares.2014.11.006 ABSTRACT: The prey spectrum of grey seals has to date been described as largely consisting of different fish, cephalopod and shrimp species. On the German island of Helgoland Düne, where harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) co-occur, a young male grey seal was observed in 2013 and again in 2014 preying upon young harbour seals. A harbour seal carcass with severe traumatic lesions was retrieved and post-mortem examinations were performed. In the following weeks several carcasses showing similar lesions were found. Sightings of grey seals assumed to be preying on harbour porpoises have increased around the North Sea. Increased competition as well as individualised behaviour could explain the increased number of observations, but former cases of abnormal lesions of marine mammals attributed to for example predation by sharks or mechanical processes should be revisited with regard to the emerging knowledge. Abstract: Guiana dolphins produce whistles with a higher frequency and less complexity than most other delphinid species. The presentstudy used a recording system with sampling rate of 192 kHz to describe the high-frequency whistles of Sotalia guianensis in Guanabara Bay,Rio de Janeiro. Eleven acoustic parameters (start, end, minimum, maximum, delta, center and peak frequency, duration, and frequency at 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 duration) were measured for all whistles. Whistles with a fundamental frequency up to 66.7 kHz were reported, thereby expanding the known frequency range of this species. The paper uses Ostrom's common-pool resource theory as an analytical lens, with an assessment of the attributes of the resource and the user(s) to explore questions of governance and sustainability. In Hawai`i, spinner dolphins move predictably from offshore overnight feeding grounds into shallow bays for daytime rest, interacting frequently with humans using these bays for tourism and other social, recreational, and subsistence purposes. To reduce the current negative interactions with dolphins, managers are seeking to implement a command-and-control approach, namely time-area closures. Our analysis indicates that viewing the bay as a resource with tourism as one of many human demands, instead of specifically focusing on dolphins, reflects an ecosystem-based approach and acknowledges complex management demands.
