*Volunteer Position in Queen Charlotte Sound, Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand –Jan-April 2014* One volunteer is required to assist with an ongoing study examining the distribution of marine mammals in the Queen Charlotte Sound, Marlborough Sounds, NZ. Species of interest include bottlenose, dusky, common and Hector’s dolphins, killer whales and New Zealand fur seals. This research forms part of a PhD study being conducted under the auspices of the Coastal-Marine Research Group (C-MRG) at Massey University, Auckland ( http://cmrg.massey.ac.nz) *Background:* The Marlborough Sounds, a region of embayments and estuaries is located in the northern tip of the South Island of New Zealand. The study site, Queen Charlotte Sound, serves as the main passageway between the North and South Islands of New Zealand and is utilized by a range of vessels. Several marine mammal species occur within Queen Charlotte Sound including bottlenose dolphins (*Tusiops truncatus*), Hector’s dolphins* *(*Cephalorhynchus hectori hectori*), common dolphins (*Delphinus *sp.), dusky dolphins (*Lagenorhynchus obscurus)* and killer whales (*Orcinus orca*). The aim of this project is to investigate the distribution and density of marine mammals occurring within the Sound in order to provide part of a baseline study of the region. Behaviour, inter-specific interactions and potential anthropogenic influences will also be investigated. *Dates:* January-end of April 2014 *Location:* Picton, New Zealand *Responsibilities:* Field work will involve data collection from two platforms of opportunity (13 m catamarans) Responsibilities will include: - Diligent searching for marine mammals, identification to species, recording of group size, group composition and behaviour - Collection of various environmental parameters - Utilization of GPS equipment to collect sighting location data and effort tracks - Data entry of all fieldwork undertaken - Opportunistic Photo-ID - Data processing and analyses including GIS - Additional responsibilities may be added as the project progresses *Qualifications:* The ideal candidate will have a science background and previous marine mammal field experience. This internship is well-suited for recent graduates or graduate students of marine biology, zoology, ecology or similar fields. I would like to reply to my colleague Gianni Pavan concerning his query (below). I am doing it through MARMAM (although I have also written to him, wondering why did he not ask me directly), because I hope with this to dispel potential misunderstandings that his question might create within the wider community. First, the Red List assessment of the Mediterranean sperm whale sub-population is online http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/16370739/0 for everyone to read and ponder about. The assessment was authored by A. Frantzis, G. Bearzi, R. Reeves, and me as the first author, with contributions from Ana Tejedor, C. Agusti, S. Airoldi, S. Panigada, R. de Stephanis, and D. Engelhaupt. In particular concerning the estimated size of such sub-population, nowhere in the assessment it is stated that it is of 2,500 animals. Rather, the argument was that, on the basis of a number of elements mentioned and quoted in the assessment (e.g., in Section "Population size"), we suggested that the sub-population contained fewer than 2,500 mature individuals, the limit under which a sub-population can be included in the Red List as Endangered under the A criterion. *South African Bryde’s whale project, False Bay, Cape Town, South Africa. 31 July – 23 August 2013.* The South African Bryde’s whale project, administered through the University of Pretoria’s Mammal Research Institute (MRI), is looking for a motivated individual to join us for a month of fieldwork in False Bay, Cape Town from the 31 July to 23 August 2013. This will be our second season of data collection for the year at this location. The selected candidate will gain experience in all aspects of fieldwork including data collection (photo-id, biopsy sampling, data recording and entry, handling genetic samples), boat and equipment maintenance and the sharing of communal duties. The candidate must be relatively fit and strong (able to lift a minimum of 25kg), able to withstand long days at sea on our 6m RIB and be a willing team participant. Previous experience with marine mammal work is not essential however he/she must show a keen desire to learn and be part of the team. Candidates with a BSc in biological sciences and experience with a digital SLR camera will be preferred. The intern will be required to join the project for the duration of the fieldwork period. The cost of the internship is; Euro 1 200 or US$ 1 600, excluding flights to Cape Town. Hi everyone, on behalf of the Bottlenose Dolphin Research Institute (BDRI)on Sardinia Island, Italy, I am pleased to announce that we are currently accepting internship applications for the Winter-Spring term 2013 (a minimum of 60 days of participation between February and June 2012). BDRI's research is focused on a long term study about the ecology and behaviour of wild unrestrained bottlenose dolphins, distribution of other cetaceans (whales and pelagic dolphins), and the potential effects of human activities (fisheries, aquaculture and tourism) in their distribution and behaviour. An internship period with the BDRI offers an invaluable exposure to boat based field work,marine mammals research, intensive training and mentoring in marine biology. Undergraduate and postgraduate students could present their BDRI's personal research project as their Thesis works if requested with the application. Internships will be under direct supervision by BDRI's director Mr. Bruno Diaz Lopez. The internship can be used for academic or vocational purposes, but students are solely responsible for making all arrangements for receiving relevant credit(s) as a result of completing the internship. Interns can expect to participate in and learn a variety of facets of marine mammal research as research assistants in four diverse research projects: 1. Behavioural ecology of Mediterranean bottlenose dolphins: We collect information about distribution and behaviour of free-ranging common bottlenose dolphins from boat based platforms. By using different behavioural sampling methods this study is particularly focused in the interaction of dolphins with human activities as fisheries, aquaculture and marine traffic. These studies provide values insight for the conservation of this top predator in an area characterized by high anthropogenic pressure. 2. Wild bottlenose dolphins’ communication: We obtain knowledge of how individuals within a population of common bottlenose dolphins communicate and what they are communicating. This can generate information ranging from; measures of habitat use, social relevance, geographical variation, cultural transmission to genetic fitness that can be applied to conservation. 3. The cetacens role in the coastal ecosystem: An ecosystem modelling approach becomes an interesting tool to examine the impact of fisheries and human activities (aquaculture, marine traffic) on cetaceans and vice versa. Mass-balance models are built to characterize the role of cetaceans in a coastal and pelagic ecosystem conditioned by human activities. 4. Pelagic cetaceans off the Sardinian coast: Data about distribution of pelagic cetaceans (fin whales, sperm whales, beaked whales, striped dolphins, common dolphins, risso’s dolphins etc.) are collected from multiple platforms including shore and boat based platforms. The behaviour and distribution of large cetaceans observed off Sardinia is still unknown. While some animals could be in migration between the Ligurian and Thyrrenian Sea, others could be mainly engaged in foraging activities. To address this and other questions the BDRI has since 2011 carried out this project. There is no compensation for these internship positions and successful applicants will be responsible for their own transportation expenses to and from the research camp (Sardinia, Italy). As a number of students are unemployed and are unable to meet our program, BDRI offers accommodation for participants and has developed a financial aid to support some of them. In late 2008, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued mandatory time-area vessel speed restrictions along the U.S. eastern seaboard in an effort to mediate collision-related mortality of right whales. All vessels 65 feet and greater in length are restricted to speeds of 10 knots or less during seasonally implemented regulatory periods. We modeled mortality risk of North Atlantic right whale when the vessel restrictions were and were not in effect, including (1) estimation of the probability of lethal injury given a ship strike as a function of vessel speed, (2) estimation of the effect of transit speed on the instantaneous rate of ship strikes, and (3) a consideration of total risk reduction. Logistic regression and Bayesian probit analyses indicated a significant positive relationship between ship speed and the probability of a lethal injury. We found that speeds of vessels that struck whales were consistently greater than typical vessel speeds for each vessel type and regulatory period studied; a use-availability model fit to these data provided strong evidence for a linear effect of transit speed on strike rates. Overall, we estimated that vessel speed restrictions reduced total ship strike mortality risk levels by 80–90% with levels that were closer to 90% in the latter two of the four active vessel speed restriction periods studied. To our knowledge, this is the most comprehensive assessment to date of the utility of vessel speed restrictions in reducing the threat of vessel collisions to large whales. Our findings indicate that vessel speed limits are a powerful tool for reducing anthropogenic mortality risk for North Atlantic right whales. Best regards Katja Vinding Petersen *Volunteer field assistant opportunity during the southern right whale season in South Africa* *BACKROUND:* This PhD project aims to obtain baseline information on fine-scale movement, individual behaviour and habitat use of cetaceans in the Greater Dyer Island area, Western Cape, South Africa. The main techniques used are theodolite tracking, passive acoustic monitoring and photo-id of the cetaceans. The focus species are; Southern right whale (Eubalaena australis), Indo Pacific humpback dolphin (Sousa chinensis), Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), Bryde's whales (Balaenoptera brydei) and Indo Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus). The PhD project is run under the auspices of the Mammal Research Institute (MRI) of University of Pretoria. *WHERE:* Kleinbaai, Western Cape, South Africa *WHEN:* During the main season of the southern right whale from the 1st of August until end of December 2013 *FIELDWORK & DATA ANALYSIS:* You will primarily be part of the theodolite tracking team. Surveys are conducted using a Total station and binoculars. Surveys are conducted from observation towers along the coastline. You will assist with the data recording, scanning the area using binoculars and entering data in the evenings or during bad weather days. As a volunteer you will also participate in sound analysis, from passive acoustic listening stations. Fieldwork is weather dependent and can vary between weekdays and weekends. You need to be available full-time, including weekends and be prepared to work long hours with early starts. On theodolite tracking days the team will leave before sunrise and return after sunset - spending the whole day tracking. Fieldwork is intense and demanding, but very rewarding. You will obtain hands-on field experience and knowledge in environmental and behavioural data collection of cetaceans, as well as photo-identification techniques. *Max. 3 volunteers will be accepted at a time.* *EXPECTATIONS*, volunteers are expected to: - Be reliable, adaptable, hard working and patient as fieldwork is highly weather dependent. This means office-based work during bad weather and long consecutive days in the field when weather permits. - NOT be afraid of heights. With kind regards and thank you in advance, Matias Langgaard Madsen Science Conference Coordinator Arctic Frontiers 2014 -------------------------------------------------- Arctic Frontiers 2014: Humans in the Arctic - Call for Papers Arctic Frontiers (http://www.arcticfrontiers.com/) holds its 8th annual conference in Tromsø, Norway, from 19-24 January 2014, with the title: Humans in the Arctic. The Arctic Frontiers conference is a central arena for discussions of Arctic issues. The conference brings together representatives from science, politics, and civil society to share perspectives on how upcoming challenges in the Arctic may be addressed to ensure sustainable development. Arctic Frontiers 2014 will address two main themes: I) Health, Environment and Society, and II) Offshore Maritime Challenges. Health, society and environment The environment of the Arctic is changing, and this affects the conditions for humans living in the Arctic for better and for worse. Climate change will lead to less ice and permafrost and thus, increased tourism, fishing, petroleum activities and mining. These activities in the High North will give opportunities and impact socio-economy, demography and traditional lifestyle as well as increase contamination and disturb the natural environment. The cumulative impact may affect life, wellbeing, culture and ultimately the health of people living in the region. Healthy adaption to the changes must be planned. The latest advances in technology and innovative communication are potentially very effective tools with which to reduce risk related to living and working in the Arctic and also maximize the benefits, thus ensuring sustainable development. How can this be done? Arctic Frontiers 2014 will address the scientific challenges ahead. Offshore Maritime Challenges The growth in offshore petroleum activities in the Arctic and the renewed interest in cargo transport north of the American and Eurasian continents require improved or new logistic and transport solutions, better guidance to ships and an extended emergency response service including Search and Rescue (SAR). This is also the case for increasing tourism and fishery activities in the Arctic. A wide range of challenges are facing the operations due to the extreme distances, climatic and weather conditions, as well as winter darkness. Low temperatures, summer fog, long distances to shore-based resources require a robust communication infrastructure, new warning systems, survival kits, lifesaving equipment, rescue units and operating procedures. The aim of the conference is to discuss these arctic challenges, and to present innovative and viable solutions in order to reduce risk, build resilience and secure commercial operations. We invite you to submit an abstract within any of these four parts. All abstracts will be reviewed by members of the four scientific committees for rating of abstract quality and presentation content. Four parallel parts will be discussed: Health, society and environment Ø Live, work and stay healthy in the Arctic Ø Health & Environment in the Arctic Offshore Maritime Challenges Ø Shipping & Offshore in the Arctic Ø Arctic Offshore Search and Rescue (SAR) Interested scientists are invited to submit abstracts to one of these four sessions for both oral and poster presentations. Arctic Frontiers is composed of a policy section and a scientific section. This call for papers addresses only the scientific section from 22 January to 24 January 2014. Based on the island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean, the DAREWINprogram (www. darewin.org) <http://www.darewin.org/> studies acoustic and ethology on Humpback Whales, Bottlenose Dolphins and Sperm Whales.
