Field assistants needed for a boat-based study on dusky dolphins off Kaikoura, New Zealand Highly motivated volunteer field assistants are needed to assist with a PhD project assessing the mating tactics of dusky dolphins off Kaikoura, New Zealand. This research is in collaboration with Dr. Bernd Würsig at Texas A&M University at Galveston. The project runs from late October 2012 through the end of January 2013 (with a 2 week vacation period in late December to travel) and volunteers who can commit to the full project duration are preferred. Vessel operator (1 position): The primary duty entails operating a 5.5-m research vessel (inflatable, rigid hull, 80 HP outboard motor) including launching and docking the vessel, safely maneuvering the vessel to determined GPS co-ordinates, and following dolphin pods while facilitating smooth conditions for videography and photography. Responsibilities also include assisting with behavioral analysis of videos. Applicants should have experience operating motorboats including launching, docking, bunking, and trailering a vessel. Photographer (2 positions): The primary duty entails photographing dolphin dorsal fins for photo-id analysis during boat-based focal follows. Photography field assistants will also crop, sort, and match fin photographs. Applicants for this position should have extensive experience using a DSLR camera to photograph moving animals at a distance. Please mention if you have previous field experience with boat-based photography or photographing wild elusive animals. Expectations: All applicants should be hard working, able to follow instructions with precision, exceptional communicators, innovative problem solvers, and comfortable on boats. This project involves continuous teamwork and applicants must be able to get along well with others and maintain a positive attitude under stressful conditions. Positions can be physically and mentally demanding, and are best suited for those with a passion for behavioral ecology field work. Typical field days involve being on the water from 8 AM through 4 PM, followed by several hours of data processing. Data are collected whenever the weather conditions are conducive, including weekends. These positions are unpaid and field assistants are responsible for their own food expenses and travel to/from Kaikoura. Housing is provided in a stunning luxury home with incredible views and private bedrooms. Field vehicles are available for errands in town. New Book on Conserving Hawaiian monk seals (and other marine mammals)

To the marine mammal community, I'm pleased to announce a new book, "The Odyssey of KP2: An orphan seal, a marine biologist, and the fight to save a species", concerning our efforts to conserve the Hawaiian monk seal. This is a risky book as it details the scientific, personal and social aspects of a species that is coming into increasing conflict with humans. The question is, will the public care enough about an isolated gray seal that they have never seen - and likely will never have the opportunity to see- to keep the species from going extinct? This truly is the biggest experiment one can conduct for marine mammals. Currently, the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding network volunteers and staff record most information by hand on paper documents. They are looking for ideas about electronic collection options. We would appreciate any feedback regarding electronic collection methods (software programs and hardware) that are currently in use and functional in a semi-wet environment. IWDG Propose a European Whale and Dolphin Sanctuary On 7 June 1991, the then Taoiseach Charles Haughey declared Ireland a Whale and Dolphin Sanctuary in recognition of the importance of Irish waters "for these magnificent creatures". The Sanctuary Declaration was unique in Europe and no EU Member State had made such an unequivocal statement about the importance of their waters for cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoise). The Sanctuary Declaration had a number of important precedents, it covered the Irish EEZ which extends up to 200 nmls (350km) offshore and acknowledged the importance of habitat protection. Although no additional legislation was enacted to support the Sanctuary Declaration as the existing legal framework was considered appropriate, it did raise awareness and interest in cetaceans in Ireland and ultimately led to increase research and knowledge which has led to conservation actions. The Sanctuary Declaration led to a clearer understanding of the responsibility Ireland had to cetaceans and their habitat including in offshore waters. The Sanctuary Declaration was a precursor to action leading to protection in Irish waters and thus the IWDG consider the Sanctuary Declaration a success. A part of the 21st Anniversary celebrations of the Sanctuary Declaration, the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group are proposing the extension of this sanctuary concept throughout European waters to create a European Whale and Dolphin Sanctuary. There are a number of small marine protected areas in Europe for cetaceans including harbour porpoise and bottlenose dolphins and some international sanctuaries such as the Pelagos Sanctuary in the Mediterranean. These areas all have important roles to play but cetaceans are mobile marine species and travel large distances. Also to gain public support for cetacean conservation it may require a larger, more simple concept. The European Whale and Dolphin Sanctuary proposal has been endorsed by the Environmental Pillar and we have held informal discussions with partners throughout Europe. The IWDG will promote this concept within Europe and encourage like-minded people and organisations to lobby their own government to make such a clear and unequivocal statement on cetacean conservation. Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom , 2012 doi:10.1017/S0025315412000793 Abstract Little is known about the movements of male sperm whales, Physeter macrocephalus, in the North Atlantic . Recoveries of traditional harpoons and tags during commercial whaling indicated movements from Nova Scotia to Spain and from the Azores to Iceland and Spain . We compared collections of photo-identification images from different areas using the North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sperm Whale Catalogue and the Eurphlukes Phlex/Match programs. The largest collections of identified males (number of individuals, start and end date for data collection shown in parentheses) are for the Azores (297, 1987–2008), Andenes (375, 1988–1996 and 2008), Tromsø (84, 2005–2008). There were six matches between Andenes and Tromsø (25 nm), with three of these re-sighted in multiple years and three photo-identification matches from the Azores to Norway (2400 nm). In all cases individuals first photographed in the Azores (in 1993, 1999 and 2003) were matched to images collected later in Tromsø (in 2007 and 2008). In 1997 a photo-identification image from Andenes matched a male stranded on the west coast of Ireland . No matches were made to images in smaller collections from Iceland , Nova Scotia , Greenland , Dominica , Guadeloupe, Gulf of Mexico and the Mediterranean . These findings show the value of data collected from whale watching vessels and the importance of collaboration between groups to allow investigation on an ocean basin scale. It is hoped that with the coordinated collection of more images from around the Atlantic, further insight might be gained into the movements of these widely ranging animals. New Tech Memo: Summary of systematic bowhead surveys conducted in the U.S. Beaufort and Chukchi Seas, 1975-2009

Abstract: Nearly 200 systematic studies involving bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) were conducted in the United States (U.S.) Beaufort and Chukchi seas from 1975 to 2009. Most (67 %) of these studies were associated with monitoring and mitigation relative to offshore oil and gas exploration and development. A compilation of this information has been needed to determine anthropogenic impacts to the species throughout its range in Arctic and subarctic waters, including facts for required environmental impact assessment determinations. As a part of the Bowhead Whale Feeding Ecology Study (BOWFEST) conducted by the Alaska Fisheries Science Center’s, National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), National Marine Mammal Laboratory (NMML) for the Minerals Management Service (MMS) (now called Bureau of Ocean Energy Management [BOEM]1), a comprehensive review and compilation was undertaken of all prominent scientific surveys that systematically recorded bowhead whales in the U.S. Beaufort and Chukchi seas from 1975 to 2008 (and some from early 2009). Given the cumulative number of such studies and the predicted continued growth of industrial activities in this region, our goals were to provide: (1) a summary for historical comparisons; (2) a format to integrate and track the studies; and (3) a publicly available starting point to identify data of relevance to ongoing work. To address these goals, we compiled a list synthesizing past and ongoing systematic sighting/acoustic detection studies on bowheads. This compilation included data derived from aerial surveys for whale distribution, aerial photography, ice- and shore-based census efforts, vesselbased and tagging efforts, and monitoring associated with offshore oil and gas exploration, development, and operations. This information is directly relevant to fulfilling the goals of current interdisciplinary efforts to study bowhead ecology (e.g., BOEM-funded studies such as BOWFEST, Bowhead Whale Aerial Survey Project (BWASP), and Chukchi Offshore Monitoring in Drilling Area [COMIDA]) relative to ongoing, proposed, and anticipated offshore oil and gas activities in BOEM’s Beaufort and Chukchi Sea planning areas. Our intent is to provide a comprehensive resource to serve as a foundation for the integration of past and ongoing bowhead studies relative to industrial activities, mitigation, and management. It is also meant to assist and improve the flow of scientific information between interested entities and the public, leading eventually to an integration of research on bowhead whales.
