New article in Marine Biology about dolphins and aquaculture

Dear MARMAM readers, I am pleased to announce the publication of my new paper in Marine Biology: Bruno Diaz Lopez (2012) Bottlenose dolphins and aquaculture: interaction and site fidelity on the north-eastern coast of Sardinia (Italy). Marine Biology DOI 10.1007/s00227-012-2002-x ABSTRACT: Owing to the worldwide growth of aquaculture over the last years, new habitats have been created through the supplement of nutrients. This addition of nutrients affects the whole marine food web, resulting in predator species such as bottlenose dolphins becoming attracted to these areas. During this 5-year-long study that was carried out along the north-eastern coast of Sardinia (Italy), bottlenose dolphin’s history of exposure to aquaculture perturbations and their effects was documented. The interaction with a fish farm was assessed by studying the site fidelity, group dynamics, and seasonal and yearly occurrence. In all, 1,838 hours were spent in the field. Behavioural observations showed that the predominant activity (89 % of the time) in the fish farm was foraging (predation and depredation). The occurrence of bottlenose dolphins appeared to be related with the seasons and with the fish farm harvesting operations. Thus, the peak dolphin occurrence in the fish farm area throughout Fall coincides with the period in which they spend most of their time foraging. A relatively small community remained resident interacting with the fish farm over a long period of time. Hence, these individuals gained intimate knowledge on how to capitalize on the fish farm industry. This heterogeneity in site fidelity and residence patterns is highly relevant when coastal management initiatives are considered. RV Celtic Mist MMO/PAM course

Dear All, The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) still have a couple of places left on a practical training week in Marine Mammal Observation and Passive Acoustics off the South West coast of Ireland. Training will be on board the newly refitted RV Celtic Mist and involve discussion and instruction in the application of the Irish guidelines, as well as their practical application in the field. The course will start and finish in Castletownbere, County Cork, and will depart port on the 3 September 2012, with all participants expected on board on the 2nd, returning to port September 9th. Early autumn sees a peak in cetacean sightings and frequently unusual sightings off the south west coast with typically good weather. The RV Celtic Mist will be using a towed hydrophone array and dipping hydrophones with associated filter boxes and sound card for high sampling rates. The course is intended to take in the shelf edge and coastal habitats to maximise as much as possible the variety and number of sightings and detections experienced in order primarily to prepare observers for mitigation with industry. New Publication - Dolphins restructure social system after reduction of commercial ﬁsheries

DOI 10.1016/j.anbehav.2012.06.009 ABSTRACT: Although human activities are known to affect the social behaviour of group-living animals, the resilience of animals' social structure to disturbance is poorly understood. In the 1990s, bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops aduncus, in Moreton Bay, Australia, formed two distinct social communities (‘trawler’ and ‘nontrawler dolphins’) based on foraging interactions (or lack thereof) with commercial prawn trawlers. Members of the two communities almost never associated, despite overlapping home ranges. Since then, changes to fisheries legislation have substantially reduced trawling in Moreton Bay. We used association analyses and social network metrics to compare patterns of sociality among bottlenose dolphins across two periods: 1997–1999 (during trawling) and 2008–2010 (post trawling). Over this decade, their social network became less differentiated and more compact (average geodesic distance between individuals decreased), with significantly more and stronger associations between individuals (mean and maximum half-weight indices increased). The previously described partitioning into two communities has disappeared, with former ‘trawler’ and ‘nontrawler dolphins’ now dispersed over the entire social network and associating with each other. This restructuring suggests that although fisheries can influence the social behaviour of bottlenose dolphins, their social structure represents a complex adaptive system that is resilient to disturbance. Cetacean tracking and calculations application

Hello MARMAMers We would like to distribute a spreedsheet that may be helpful to the broader community for cetacean tracking studies via theodolite or total station (i.e., taking geolocation fixes of marine mammals from a theodolite / total station). We were unable to use get our total station to communicate with other professional software, and so we developed a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet that should assist researchers to analyze data taken with the theodolite / total station. We also attached a Manual and the 2 links to 2 different videos that serve as manual for the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. The software does most of the calculations you will need to estimate the Lat. and Long. of objects seen through a theodolite / total station, including some data management facilitaties to discriminate between different objects (boats, whales, etc). Its features include:- Tide-height interpolation;- curvature of the earth corrections,- estimations of turning rates and other aggregate variables,etc. With this application, we’re not trying to replace other programs (Pythagoras, Cyclops) developed for the same applications (and are no doubt better for theodolite tracking research). However, due to incompatibility problems between our model Total Station / Theodolite, we had to look for another solution, and we want to share it to other researchers that may have the same problem that we had. Project Manager - Marine Species Monitoring Program HDR EOC is currently in need of a Project Manager - Marine Species Monitoring Program in Norfolk, VA. The ideal candidate will have project management consulting expertise along with an extensive knowledge of Marine Science emphasizing the effects of underwater sound to marine mammals as well as experience monitoring marine mammal abundance, distribution, and/or behavioral responses to stimuli. This individual must possess excellent communication skills, a demonstrated history of reliability, strong work ethic, solid time management skills, and a demonstrated history of team-oriented performance. This position will assist in a wide range of project management and team support roles with our current clients and expand our client-base in the Norfolk, VA area with an anticipated concentration of work assignments concentrated on the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico areas but also including the Pacific Ocean region from California to Guam and northward to the Gulf of Alaska. Travel up to 25% may be required. Masters Degree in Marine Biology or a related field strongly preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication skills a must. Demonstrated history of reliability, strong work ethic, solid time management skills are all required. Successful candidates must have a minimum of 3+ years of experience managing scientific research projects focused on marine mammal behavior in a consulting or university-related research capacity; ideally this would include a background of direct interface with customers, and regulatory experience in a combination of Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) and Endangered Species Act (ESA) compliance. Candidates must also be highly proficient in writing procedures, guides and/or studies. Qualified candidates must have the ability to obtain a security clearance at the secret level.
