Seeking field assistants for research on tropical dolphins in north-west Australia Dates: April - June 2012. Assistants must be available for the full duration of the field season. Project title: Abundance estimation, residency and genetic connectivity of snubfin and humpback dolphins in the Kimberley region, Western Australia. Institution: Cetacean Research Unit, Murdoch University - www.mucru.org Overview: I am seeking experienced field assistants to assist with boat-based photo-ID and biopsy sampling in north-west Australia over the period April-June 2012. This project, funded by the Australian Marine Mammal Centre, aims to collect baseline data on the local abundance, residency and genetic connectivity of Australian snubfin (Orcaella heinsohni) and Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. This is an opportunity to gain experience in field techniques for small cetacean research, while contributing to a project with a high conservation and management value. Location: Two or three sites between the Dampier Peninsula and Wyndham will be visited over the course of the field season. Accommodation will comprise shared basic cabins or similar with camp kitchen and bathroom facilities. These are remote locations far from urban areas and amenities. Duties: Searching for dolphins, driving the boat, taking photos, making and recording field observations, equipment cleaning and basic maintenance, data entry, a fair share in communal cooking and housekeeping duties, and generally working hard and having a great time. Expect long hours on the water for work multiple days in a row, and up to a week between days off. Prerequisites: Experience of working on and driving, to some extent, a small boat (essential); no history of debilitating seasickness (essential); be team-oriented, have a good sense of humour, patience, and an enthusiastic attitude to hard work, long hours and collecting data on the natural environment (essential); experience of photo-ID survey techniques (highly desirable). Logistics: Departing from the city of Perth in early April, the team (3-4 people) will travel by vehicle to study sites on the north-west coast some 2,500 km away. Approximately 4 weeks will be spent at each field site conducting boat-based surveys whenever weather conditions permit. The team will then return to Perth in mid/late June. An exact end date will be unavailable until nearer the time, so assistants should assume commitment to the project until the end of June. Expenses: This is an unpaid position. However, food and accommodation at field sites are provided at no cost to assistants. Assistants are responsible for their own travel costs to Perth, although travel to/from field sites (by car) is provided. Passive Acoustic Technician Training Course

Bio-Waves, Inc., is pleased to announce that registration is now open for our Passive Acoustic Technician Training course. This five day course will be held at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, La Jolla, California from Monday April 30th through Friday May 4th, 2012, with an optional training day at sea on Saturday, May 5th. The course combines theoretical instruction with hands-on demonstrations and training to give participants a working knowledge of passive acoustic monitoring hardware, software, data review and data management. By the end of the course, participants will have the tools and basic skills to work as bio-acoustic field technicians (e.g research, mitigation an monitoring technicians). All participants will receive course materials and other useful information for use in the field. The optional at-sea training will provide the opportunity for students to participate in towed-hydrophone array operations on the R/V Sea Explorer operated by the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, California. The at-sea option is offered at an additional cost to the “Instruction Only” option, and is dependent upon a minimum number of participants signing up for this option (confirmation of the at-sea training day will only be available when the minimum has been met). The Passive Acoustic Technician Training course provides lectures and and practical training on the following subjects: · basic physics of underwater sound · setup, operation, troubleshooting and repair of towed hydrophone arrays and sonobuoys · hands-on demonstration of software used to detect, localize and classify sounds produced by marine mammals · protocols for acoustic data collection, review and management. Field assistants needed for fin whale land-based survey in Southern Spain

Dear all, (apologies for cross-posting) The research group CIRCE (http://www.circe.info) is seeking applications from volunteers to help with fieldwork on fin whale research in the Strait of Gibraltar in May-July 2012. The fin whales observed in the Strait of Gibraltar are in migration between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea and are still recovering from years of hunting. Due to the high and increasing maritime traffic in the Strait, at least 3 ship strikes have been observed with fin whales since 1999 and probably more remain unknown. Therefore, we need to assess for this population the risk of collision with merchant ships or ferries. We will use theodolite tracking from a land station to find the main routes for the fin whales as well as any behavioural changes in relation to boat movements. This project has been running for 3 years both in summertime and wintertime. During this next summer survey we are planning to deploy satellite tags on the migrating whales to identify their summering grounds. You will be responsible for your transport to and from the main centre, but once here, we will provide shared-room accommodation near the research centre and daily transport to the land station. Comments needed on Arctic oil and gas -- Feb. 28 deadline

Dear All, **I'm writing to alert everyone to an important issue for comment.** NMFS recently issued a draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) on offshore oil and gas exploration - both seismic surveying and drilling - in the Alaskan Arctic. As written, the document contemplates high levels of activity. The Beaufort Sea could see as many as six 2D/3D seismic surveys, five site clearance/shallow hazard surveys, and two exploratory drilling programs each year; and the Chukchi Sea as many as five 2D/3D seismic surveys, five site clearance/shallow hazard surveys, and two exploratory drilling programs annually. NRDC and pretty much the entirety of the environmental community are deeply concerned about the poor analysis in the document. For example, NMFS assumes that marine mammals would not be disturbed by airgun noise at received levels below 160 dB. It makes no attempt to quantify how much disruption would occur each year, or to model masking effects, or to consider the cumulative impacts of all this anticipated activity on acoustic habitat. And it leaves uncertain whether it will adopt any measure, such as time/place restrictions, that can mitigate impacts beyond a short distance of the airgun array or drilling site. **NMFS is accepting comments through February 28.** Your input will be critical to convincing the agency that a scientifically defensible final product will require considerably more effort. New paper on harbour porpoise distribution in relation to their prey

Correlation between the seasonal distribution of harbour porpoises and their prey in the Sound, Baltic Sea. Marine Biology, available online from February 2, 2012. DOI: 10.1007/s00227-012-1883-z The study examines the relationship between distribution of harbour porpoises and their prey in a small strait between Denmark and Sweden, the Sound (Øresund). Abstract: Abstract Low densities of harbour porpoises in winter (November-March) and high densities in summer (April-October) were found in the Sound, connecting the Baltic Sea and Kattegat. Due to their high energy requirements, it is hypothesized that the density of harbour porpoises is related to local prey abundance. This was tested by examining the stomach content of 53 harbour porpoises collected between 1987 and 2010 in the Sound (high season, 34 porpoises; low season, 19 porpoises). A total of 1,442 individual fish specimens from thirteen species were identified. Twelve of these were present in the high-porpoise density season and seven in the low-density season. The distribution of occurrence and the distribution of number of fish species were different between seasons, indicating a shift in prey intake between seasons. Furthermore, during the high-density season, the mean and total prey weight per stomach as well as the prey species diversity was higher. However, no difference was found in the number of prey species between the two seasons, indicating a higher quality of prey in the high-density season. Atlantic cod was found to be the main prey species in terms of weight in the high-density season while Atlantic herring and Atlantic cod were equally important during the low-density season. Prey availability and predictability are suggested as the main drivers for harbour porpoise distribution, and this could be caused by the formation of frontal zones in spring in the northern part of the Sound, leading to prey concentrations in predictable areas. New publication on Brucella ceti and brucellosis in cetaceans

Front. Cell. Inf. Microbio. 2:3. doi: 10.3389/fcimb.2012.00003 ABSTRACT Since the first case of brucellosis detected in a dolphin aborted fetus, an increasing number of *Brucella ceti* isolates has been reported in members of the two suborders of cetaceans: Mysticeti and Odontoceti. Serological surveys have shown that cetacean brucellosis may be distributed worldwide in the oceans. Although all *B. ceti* isolates have been included within the same species, three different groups have been recognized according to their preferred host, bacteriological properties, and distinct genetic traits: *B. ceti* dolphin type, *B. ceti* porpoise type, and *B. ceti*human type. It seems that *B. ceti* porpoise type is more closely related to *B. ceti* human isolates and *B. pinnipedialis* group, while B. ceti dolphin type seems ancestral to them. Based on comparative phylogenetic analysis, it is feasible that the *B. ceti* ancestor radiated in a terrestrial artiodactyl host close to the Raoellidae family about 58 million years ago. The more likely mode of transmission of *B. ceti* seems to be through sexual intercourse, maternal feeding, aborted fetuses, placental tissues, vertical transmission from mother to the fetus or through fish or helminth reservoirs. The *B. ceti*dolphin and porpoise types seem to display variable virulence in land animal models and low infectivity for humans. However, brucellosis in some dolphins and porpoises has been demonstrated to be a severe chronic disease, displaying significant clinical and pathological signs related to abortions, male infertility, neurobrucellosis, cardiopathies, bone and skin lesions, strandings, and death. Dear Marmamers The Cetacean Ecology and Acoustics Laboratory at the University of Queensland is seeking applicants for a PhD in the effects of noise on humpback whale song. The is largely an extension of work carried out by the lab in both the behavioural effects of noise on whales and the function and evolution of humpback whale song. The PhD will rely heavily on data collected over the last 10 years and would not suit someone who wants to do large amounts of fieldwork. We are an active lab however, usually with several projects running concurrently and a culture of helping each other in the field, so there will be opportunities for fieldwork on other projects. Applicants should have a first class honours degree or masters degree in biology, marine science or other relevant discipline (candidates with a background in electrical engineering may also be suitable). A solid background in animal communication and acoustic analysis is desirable. Australian and New Zealand applicants will be preferred. Other applicants would need to be competitive for an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship at UQ, covering tuition and a stipend for 3 years. This usually means having a masters degree and at least one first-author publication. This is an exciting opportunity for a keen young scientist interested in animal communication who would like to undertake a PhD in a supportive and social lab environment. The student would be supervised by Michael Noad and Rebecca Dunlop in the School of Veterinary Science with the opportunity of further supervision by other faculty in the School of Biological Sciences. Applicants familiar with UQ should note that the PhD will be based on the Gatton campus about an hour west of Brisbane, not at the main campus at St Lucia. Applications should be by email.
