CORRECTION Master's courses at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, UK - Marine Mammal Science & Ecosystem-based management of Marine Systems We are currently accepting applications for the 2012/13 entry to our Master's level courses at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, UK. The Master's degree requires students to undertake two taught semesters (120 credits) followed by an independent research project of three months duration (for the one year MRes), or 12 months duration (for the two year MPhil). Students undertake intensive training in quantitative methods, research techniques and study current issues in a broad range of topics. Teaching is done by means of lectures, student-led seminars and tutorials. Practicals involve lab work, field excursions, modelling and computer-based data analysis. The Master's in Marine Mammal Science is being taught by members of the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU), the School of Biology and the Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling (CREEM) which are part of the Scottish Oceans Institute at the University of St Andrews. The course is intended to prepare students fully for a professional career involved with conservation of and research into marine mammals. One of the optional modules, Predator ecology in Polar Ecosystems, involves a vessel-based field expedition to the Antarctic Peninsula (requires additional payment of a substantial expedition fee). Students study marine environments from the tropics to polar regions as integrated systems, exploring interconnections between the physical environment, biodiversity and the impacts of human activity and resource use. Intern opportunity for remote Whale Research Station Northern British Columbia

Intern opportunity for remote whale research station along the north coast of British Columbia Cetacea Lab is a non-profit research organization located on the southern end of Gil Island along the northern coast of British Columbia. Our location is unique as we monitor the acoustic habitat of both orca and humpback whale populations in an extremely remote location. We are the only residents of Gil Island and Cetacealab the only facility. We share this island with wildlife such as wolves and black bears. Volunteers must be prepared for the remoteness of our location. Cetacealab has established a network of hydrophone stations located from 5 to 20 km from the facility. All signals are broadcasted to the lab and digitally recorded when cetaceans are present. In early summer northern resident orcas arrive, followed by groups of feeding humpback whales; transient orcas are found year round but not as frequent. In the last 2 years there has been an increase in Fin whale sightings in Caamano Sound. Cetacea Lab is currently looking for interns to operate a small out-camp referred to as Ulric Point to complete our research criteria. Ulric Point is extremely remote. We will only consider applicants who are genuinely comfortable with the outdoors and have experienced the ruggedness of nature, have a passion for whales and can work long hours dedicated to the collection of data. Ulric Point is situated in a unique location on the northeast corner of Aristazabal Island. A small plywood shelter and viewing platform give an amazing view overlooking Caamano Sound, a candidate for Critical Habitat for Northern Resident Killer Whales. The purpose of this out-camp is to ensure this designation occurs. Cetacea Lab installed a hydrophone station at Ulric Point and established that during the late spring to summer months, orca (both resident and transient) humpback and fin whales can be identified daily from this location. This project will document the occurrence of all cetacean travel patterns, behavior and group dynamics from this land based location. The days are long, the bugs can be bad, food is simple, fresh water limited, but the whale activity is inspiring. Marine Mammal Internship with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society WDCS North America (NA), headquartered in Plymouth, Massachusetts, is accepting applications for internships providing experience in working for an international organization in the conservation and research arena. The intern program is offered to qualified applicants throughout the year, allowing each participant / student to customize their learning experience based on their interest and availability. Successful applicants will become proficient at research, educational outreach, and conservation of marine mammals; they will also be expected to contribute a more focused project furthering professional development. WDCS is willing to help qualified students obtain credits for the program through their college or university. The program typically requires a minimum commitment of 3 months, with the possibility of extending the term. All interns are trained in photo-identification, data-collection and management, public speaking, and marine mammal policy. Based on time of year and the interest level of successful applicants, the intern program may include all or some portion of the following: Education and Outreach * Whale Watch Naturalist Training. * Outreach to local schools and the general public. * Assisting with and learning about the importance of ecotourism and best practices * Writing blogs about the work conducted while interning with WDCS * Attendance at conferences and meetings. Research * Cataloging individually identifiable humpback whales. * Collection of marine mammal sightings and distributional data in the Southern Gulf of Maine * Analyzing body condition of marine mammals through scarring and skin condition * Researching and assisting with grant applications. * Preparing a report of the previous season's whale sightings with historical analysis, risk issues and the impact of cumulative developmental threats. * Attendance and participation in stranding training and events. Conservation * Supporting WDCS personnel at key conservation meetings. * Literature research and data analysis to be used in written and oral comments submitted to federal agencies. No prior experience is required, as training will be provided. However, preference will be given to individuals involved in marine mammal science courses or related institutions and/or with prior volunteer marine mammal field experience. Successful applicants will: * Be fluent in English. * Be 18 years or older, preference given to students matriculated in appropriate graduate or undergraduate degree programs. * Be able to show proof of valid health insurance. * Have the ability to work on sea going vessels for long hours that may require physical labor. * Work effectively as a member of a close-knit team. * Be open to work long days (12 hours or more sometimes) in the field or office. * Computer proficiency with operating PC's and Mac's. * Have good verbal and written communication skills. * Work well under pressure. There is no compensation for the internship position. Interns must arrange for their own transportation to and from Plymouth. Limited housing with a shared bedroom is available for a monthly fee of $300. WDCS may be able to provide assistance in finding alternate housing at the request of the applicant. Common dolphin Photo-ID Volunteer Position in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand A volunteer is needed to assist with a PhD study investigating the abundance, social structure and site fidelity of common dolphins (Delphinus sp.) in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand. This PhD project is part of the ongoing research of the New Zealand Common Dolphin Project (NZCDP) and the Coastal-Marine Research Group (C-MRG) at Massey University Albany, Auckland. (<a href="redir.aspx?C=98b79602c29c479a8073f0ea879cb4e1&URL=http%3a%2f%2fcmrg.massey.ac.nz" target="_blank">http://cmrg.massey.ac.nz</a>). PROJECT BACKGROUND: The Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand, is an important habitat for common dolphins that are present in the Gulf all year and use the region extensively for foraging, and as a calving and nursery ground. Common dolphins have been found to consistently inhabit coastal waters making them vulnerable to the impacts of pollution, tourist interactions, recreational use and adjacent urban population growth. The aim of this project is to investigate the abundance, site fidelity and social structure of common dolphins in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand. DATES: June 2012 October 2012 LOCATION: Auckland, New Zealand FIELDWORK: The volunteer position entails assisting during field surveys and analysis of common dolphin fin photo identification. The successful applicant will gain valuable experience in conducting marine mammal field research, identifying individual common dolphins based on dorsal fin characteristics, and the use of MS Access databases for archiving field data. Field work is physically and at times mentally demanding but it is a great opportunity to gain knowledge in visual cetacean surveying, to get hands-on field experience in relation to survey techniques, photo-identification, behavioural observations, and improve practical skills (data analysis, photo-ID). Due to the training required, applicants should be available for a minimum of 2 months, however all applicants will be considered. The placements commence in June 2012. Fieldwork is weather dependent and can vary between weekdays and weekends. Assistants need to be available full-time including weekends and be prepared to work long hours with early starts. RESPONSIBILITIES: Photo-identification of dolphins in the lab, including photo sorting, grading, and matching, sighting data entry, assist in maintenance of long-term photo-id catalogue using a MS Access database and Finscan. Research assistants should be prepared to work long days in the office analysing of photographs and matching them with the photo-identification catalogue (75% of the time). Assisting with boat-based photo-identification surveys of common dolphins from a local dolphin watching vessel, collecting environmental, location, and behavioural data for dolphin groups (25% of the time). This is a volunteer position, so there is unfortunately no monetary compensation or living provisions. The successful candidate should arrange their own accommodation in Auckland, living expenses, travel costs and visa. PREREQUISITES: Be reliable, adaptable, hardworking and patient as fieldwork is highly weather dependent. This means office based work during bad weather and long consecutive days in the field when weather permits. Have a mature attitude towards marine mammal research Fluently speak English Be sociable, enthusiastic, and have a positive attitude Strong interest in the marine environment and conservation QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of 18 years of age. *Experienced intern required for bottlenose dolphin research boat trips* * * * * Internship offered for a marine biology/bioacoustic enthusiast with a passenger boat trip company to assist with wildlife guiding activities and study of bottlenose dolphins and harbour porpoises in Cardigan Bay West Wales. * * SeaMôr Wildlife Tours is looking for enthusiastic and hardworking boat crew to fill an internship offered during the period of April to October 2011. The intern will be working on the wildlife watching boat as crew and wildlife guide, assist with sales and marketing and be in charge of dolphin and porpoise research, collecting and collating sightings information during the wildlife trips. The successful intern will have the opportunity to help set up and run an acoustic project recording and cataloguing whistle repertoire of bottlenose dolphin whistles. We also run occasional SCUBA dive trips and PADI courses and the intern(s) will have a chance to participate and help out in these activities, with a possibility of gaining further diver qualifications. Existing experienced Dive Masters and Instructors will have opportunities for paid diving work. The Florida Student Chapter of the Society for Marine Mammalogy 2nd Annual Research Symposium--Save the date! The Florida Student Chapter of the Society for Marine Mammalogy will be holding its second annual research symposium April 27-28, 2012 at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, FL. All undergraduate and graduate students in the state of Florida and nearby areas interested in marine mammal research and conservation are welcome to attend, give oral presentations of their research, and network with other students and professionals in the field of marine mammalogy. We are excited to announce that the keynote speaker will be the current Society for Marine Mammalogy president Dr. Randall Wells! More information regarding the symposium will be sent out shortly.
