As part of our continued growth there are immediate vacancies for the following positions: PAMS OPERATIONAL TECHNICIAN As a PAMS Operational Technician you will be responsible for the maintenance, despatch and receipt of all PAMS equipment. In addition, you will be expected to keep up to date with national and international development of PAMS and implement accordingly. Applicants will ideally be of degree calibre or equivalent in a relevant discipline and possess a full comprehension with the technical composition and use of PAMS. Ideally the candidate would have an understanding of marine mammals, their biology and identification and previous marine survey experience would be advantageous. MARINE MAMMAL SCIENTIST Reporting to the current Marine Wildlife Business Manager, you will be expected to undertaken and develop the application of marine mammal observations, monitoring and recording systems, the compilation and preparation of reports and the processing of observational data and possess a sound knowledge marine mammals, their biology and identification. Ideally you will be of degree calibre or equivalent, and demonstrate the ability to lead and develop projects from implementation to completion and illustrate sound commercial awareness. You will need to be a confident individual with a can do attitude and enjoy being challenged. Previous relevant marine oil and gas or renewable energy industry experience is advantageous. Both positions require the individual to spend in the region of 60 days at sea, dependent on project requirements, with the remaining time being office based (Great Yarmouth). Information on humpback whales protecting other marine mammals?

We recently published a short popular piece about humpback whales deliberately interfering with killer whale attacks on seals in Antarctica in an apparent effort to protect the seals (R. Pitman and J. Durban. 2009. Save the seal! Nat. Hist. Mag. Nov. 2009). We have come across some similar accounts involving humpbacks interceding on behalf of sea lions, minke whales and gray whales in the Northern Hemisphere and it seems to be a widespread behavior. If you have a detailed account(s) of this kind of behavior we are looking for collaborators to further document this phenomenon. New killer whale photo-ID catalog

Dear colleagues, The following is now available online: Olson, P.A. and Gerrodette, T. 2008. Killer whales of the eastern tropical Pacific: A catalog of photo-identified individuals. NOAA Technical Memorandum. NOAA-NMFS-SWFSC-428. It is the first photo-identification catalog of tropical pelagic killer whales. 195 individual killer were identified in the eastern tropical Pacific between 1986 and 2006. The catalog yields information on the geographic movement and external morphology of this little known population of killer whales. New paper re: Effects of whale watching on humpback whale reproductive success

Does whale watching in Southern New England impact humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) calf production or calf survival? Biological Conservation 142: 2931-2940. Abstract: There is growing concern about the effects of wildlife tourism on biologically important parameters in target species and/or populations. We tested whether whale watch vessel exposure affected either the calving rates or calf survival to age 2 in humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) on their feeding grounds off of southern New England, where individually identified whales have been studied intensively for decades and whale watch pressure is intense. Whale watch exposure did not correlate with either the calving rate (# of calves/# of years sighted) or calf production and survival of individual females, although a breakpoint analysis showed a slight negative trend up to 1649 min (or 20 boat interactions). In some comparisons, whales with more exposure were significantly more likely to produce calves and to have those calves survive. Logistic regressions including exposure and prey variables also failed to show negative effects of exposure in predicting calf productivity or survival. A limited comparison of calves seen only in an alternate habitat without whale watching showed similar return rates to those in the exposed area. Our data include limited suggestions that some animals (i.e., females alive when whale watching started) might be more susceptible to impacts than others. However, we found no direct evidence for negative effects of whale watch exposure, and suggest that short-term disturbance may not necessarily be indicative of more meaningful detrimental effects on either individuals or populations. Rehabilitation advice on adult male harbour seal We at the Irish Seal Sanctuary (www.irishsealsanctuary.ie) a centre that provides shelter, treatment and rehabilitation for marine wildlife found in distress on Ireland's coastline, are seeking help within the MARMAM community with a male harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) come to be known as “Benny”. Benny came to the sanctuary for the first time on the 18th July 2008. He would have been approximately 1 yr old, 4ft long and 27.5kg. He was rehabilitated and released on 16th August 2008. On the 21st September 2008 he was re-admitted. We had a case similar to Benny back in 2006 with a seal that was released 3 times unsuccessfully. Both that seal and Benny came from the same location in Ireland, and both have an unusually puffy face/head. Some veterinarians have hinted towards hydrocephalus, but unfortunately without access to an MRI this cannot be confirmed. The 2006 seal was eventually passed on to an Irish wildlife park, where he remains today. We tried to re-home Benny last year but could not find anyone willing to take him on. We decided to keep him in our pools. He thrived there until this summer. In late July 2009, we noticed he had many skin lesions and abscesses on his flippers and body. He was lethargic and remained outside of the water most of the time. We treated him with Sinulox and alamycin and the suggested cause was depression. After treatment, the abscesses disappeared, the lesions improved. In early August the first new pups were put up in the pool with him. Benny remained lethargic, disinterested and his appetite was poor. After pushing him in the water, he just bobbed there, floating for a few days without eating. We then decided to bring him back down to a kennel for better observation. In the kennel we noticed that he floats twisted to one side. He has regained his appetite but is extremely uncoordinated. Out of the water, he can longer displace himself. Half his body seems almost paralyzed. Recently we moved him into a deeper pool. Here we noticed, more than just being uncoordinated, Benny can no longer even swim down deeper than half a meter. We were thinking perhaps he has had a stroke. We have had his blood and faeces tested, neither showed any abnormalities. Our consulting veterinarians are at a loss as to what is wrong with him. All of us at the sanctuary fear there is little else we can provide for Benny's welfare. We are desperately seeking out any further treatments which may enable Benny to regain the quality of life he had before July. If anyone in the MARMAM community has any experience with this type of condition or recommendations, we remain very eager to hear them. Colleagues, As part of a long-running workshop, the latest installment of which was the "Ecological Modeling for Marine Mammalogists" workshop held just prior to the 18th Biennial Conference in Québec earlier this month, we are pleased to announce the debut of a website dedicated to marine mammal habitat modeling.
