Dear Colleagues, This is to let you know that the XXI IBAC will take place in Pavia, Italy, on the 15-18 September 2007, and that for this occasion we are organising a symposium entitled Vocal communication in mammals. This symposium will focus on research involving vocal production, social interactions, sexual communication and species or individual recognition in both terrestrial and marine mammals (with the exclusion of underwater communication). The symposium will last 3-4 hours with 20 minutes slots for talks (15 min talk and 5 additional min for questions). Please pass this email on to interested colleagues. ______________________________________________________________ XXI IBAC - International Bioacoustic Congress CIBRA, University of Pavia, 15-18 September 2007 ______________________________________________________________ The XXI International BioAcoustic Congress will be held in the historical buildings of the University of Pavia, Italy, where Spallanzani in the 18th century studied the ability of bats to fly in the dark. The Congress is organized, for the third time, by CIBRA, the Interdisciplinary Center for Bioacoustics and Environmental Research, University of Pavia. The subject of bioacoustics is principally a marriage between the fields of biology and physical acoustics. Given its multidisciplinary nature, the Congress aims to bring together, in informal settings, biologists from different specialisms (ethologists, physiologists, taxonomists, ecologists, etc) with engineers, sound archivists and amateur sound recordists, to foster discussion and exchange of ideas. During the Congress the 2nd European workshop on animal sound research and libraries will be held. The workshop will be organized by CIBRA for the European Network of Bioacoustic Collections for Taxonomy, Systematics and Conservation. The network was created based on the agreement of experts who attended the 1st workshop at the Fonoteca Zoologica (Madrid), 27-30 September 2006, to foster cooperation among institutions, researchers and interested amateurs to safeguard animal sound recordings and to optimise their use as a resource for research and nature conservation. The Congress is based on thematic symposia that will cover both the traditional research areas and new emerging themes. To date, five symposia are planned: "Advanced tools for sound recording and analysis" (G.Pavan et al.) 1-2 May Symposium: “Potential Application of Quieting Technology on Large Commercial Vessels”

NOAA's Ocean Acoustics Program would like to announce an international symposium entitled “Potential Application of Quieting Technology on Large Commercial Vessels” to be held on 1-2 May 2007 at the NOAA campus in Silver Spring, Maryland, USA. A multi-disciplinary steering committee (initially formed during the 2004 symposium: “Shipping Noise and Marine Mammals: A Forum for Science, Management, and Technology”) is currently finalizing the goals, objectives, and agenda for the 2007 symposium. At the symposium, speakers will discuss current knowledge and applications in a variety of technical subject areas. Working groups will be formed and assigned specific tasks with the goals of: (1) specifying quieting targets; (2) producing a tangible assessment of current capabilities and costs; and (3) identifying the most promising opportunities given what is known about future trends within the vessel industry. Subject: Marine Mammal Photos for Academic Press/Elsevier Guide Dear Colleagues, Marc Webber, Bob Pitman, and I are preparing a comprehensive marine mammal identification guide, which will include detailed species accounts, multiple illustrations, illustrated keys, and a large collection of full-color photos. We are aiming to produce the most comprehensive and authoritative identification guide to marine mammals ever published. It will be published in late 2007 by Academic Press/Elsevier. We are now making our final photo selections and are trying to tie-up a few loose ends. We are still missing good photos of the following: Baikal seal, Caspian seal, ringed seal, harp seal, hooded seal, bearded seal, ribbon seal, largha seal, Mediterranean monk seal, Galapagos fur seal, Juan Fernandez fur seal, Guadalupe fur seal, and New Zealand sea lion. Unfortunately, we cannot pay photographers for use of photos. There is no budget for this. However, if we use your photos, we may be able to offer you a free copy of the book (which we expect to cost about US$50). This would be for one-time use, and there would be no restrictions on further use by the photographer. We would need good quality slides or digital images (the highest possible resolution). New paper: Multivariate analysis to determine the influence of aquaculture on the presence of Bottlenose Dolphins

Dear MARMAM readers, I am pleased to announce the publication of the following article in the proceedings of the IV Iberoamerican Congress about Aquaculture (CIVA2006) (abstract bellow, this article is only in spanish language): Díaz López, B.& Bernal Shirai J. A., 2006. Multivariate analysis to determine the influence of aquaculture on the presence of Bottlenose Dolphins Tursiops truncatus (Montagu, 1821). CIVA 2006 (http://www.civa2006.org) 282-290 Summary Notable increases in coastal aquaculture make it vital to study the environmental effects associated with their presence. Increase in organic material, resultant from aquaculture activities, acts as an attractant for fish species and consequently their predators. Many studies have examined the effects of aquaculture on marine fauna in general, but there is a paucity of studies examining, more specifically, the impacts of aquaculture on dolphins. In 12 consecutives months of study, we realized 1 324 samples in a marine fin fish farm off the northeastern coast of Sardinia, Italy. The objective of this study was to determine the variables that may influence the presence and abundance of dolphins in the fish farm area. Dolphins were observed year round during the study period, 37% of the samples analyzed, but there was a clear seasonal trend in their presence. Based on the results obtained in this study we can discriminate two factors that influence the seasonal presence of dolphins: water temperature and anthropogenic impacts (i.e. presence of recreational boats and/or fishing boats). These results can be useful for aquaculture management, in particular for the implementation of anti-predator methods in marine fin fish farms similar to the one in our study. Field course announcement for the Greek Sea area

The Greek research organisation Archipelagos is offering several one-week field courses addressing the local cetacean fauna. Location is the island of Patmos, Northern Dodecanese. Whales & Dolphins of the Greek Seas - A Marine Field Course These courses focus on the biology and conservation of marine mammals in the Aegean Sea, and the methods to study them in the field. Weather permitting, daily boat surveys will be carried out. Dates in 2007: 3.4.-9.4. 29.4.-5.5. 27.5.-2.6. 22.7.-28.7. 9.9.-15.9. 14.10.-20.10. (The fee including accommodation, meals and all activities is Euro 580.) New MRes course in Marine Mammal Science

One-year Master of Research in Marine Mammal Science We are currently accepting applications for the 2007/08 entry into a new Master of Research (MRes) course in Marine Mammal Science based at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. This is a unique one-year course intended to prepare students fully for a professional career in marine mammal conservation and research. It is, first and foremost, a course in quantitative marine ecology. The programme is tailored to address the scientific challenges of marine mammal physiology and behaviour with strong components of methodology, laboratory work, and field study. The course will be taught by members of the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU), with some modules jointly organised with the School of Biology and CREEM (Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling).
