The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC), a non-profit organization dedicated to understanding and maintaining the integrity of the marine ecosystem of Alaska through research, rehabilitation, conservation and public education, is seeking applicants for the following: Temporary Research Technicians (2) Chiswell Island Steller Sea Lion Remote Monitoring This position serves as a seasonal technician for the Steller sea lion remote monitoring project at the Alaska SeaLife Center. Responsibilities include: operating remote video monitoring equipment, photo identification of Steller sea lions, classification and recording of sea lion behavior, general administrative assistance, data entry and analysis, and assistance with field studies as assigned. Qualification requirements include bachelor's degree in biology, marine biology, zoology, or related field. Experience in biological field studies, scientific writing, remote monitoring equipment, and photo identification of marine mammals preferred. These are temporary, full-time positions. Pollution of the seas with plastic garbage and its impact on marine mammals; Dear Colleagues, We are a small group of oceanographers and marine biologist based in Pisa/Italy. We are currently undertaking a study on the pollution of the Sea of Liguria with plastic garbage and its long term effects on the marine environment. With our organisation Green-Ocean Marine Services, we also research the impact of plastic ingestion on marine mammals esp. dolphins. For a period of 3 years we have documented steep rising mortality rates of dolphins in our observation area. In 2006 ca. 62 % of 132 dolphin corpses found and dissected contained larger amounts of plastic in their stomach. In all such cases ileus was found to be the cause of death. In a recent study we have found the pollution rate to be 120g/m2 (plastic per square meter standing water column) in our observation area. For this study we have surveyed an area of 240NM2 (surface, suspense and sediment) visually, with camera and with ROV. Data is available. We would much appreciate if you could supply us with either of the following research data/information (or related links): 1. data on pollution (through plastic garbage) rates in other sea areas a. surface b. suspense c. sediment 2. data impact on marine mammals 3. data impact on marine life forms 4. data on plastic garbage being caught as by-catch of fishing vessels; 5. New Article: Dolphins Presence & Incidental Capture in a marine fin fish farm

U.K. (2007); JMBA 87, 113117 entitled: Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) presence and incidental capture in a marine fish farm on the north-eastern coast of Sardinia (Italy) Díaz López, B & Bernal Shirai, J.A. doi: 10.1017/S0025315407054215 Abstract On the north-eastern coast of Sardinia, from November 2004 to January 2006, the first attempt in the Mediterranean basin to obtain information on encounter rate, group size and incidental capture of bottlenose dolphins in a marine fish farm was assessed, combining direct observations from fish farm boats with photoidentification studies. During 15 months of research, 79 d (65.3% of the total monitored days) were spent in direct observation of 146 groups of bottlenose dolphins around the fish farm cages. There was a peak in bottlenose dolphin presence during winter. Photographs were taken in the fish farm area during 79 encounters on 61 different days (totalling 34 marked individuals). The regular occurrence of some dolphins suggests individual preferences for the fish farm area. The incidental bottlenose dolphin capture observed in large, loose predator nets (1 dolphin per month) is cause for concern, as it is questionable whether or not the bottlenose dolphins in the area can sustain incidental capture of this magnitude. The information gained from this study shows the necessity for further regulations to be established, both in the use of predator nets and management of marine fish farms. Dear colleagues, The following is the abstract of a recently published paper: The surface behavior of the estuarine dolphin in Baía dos Golfinhos, RN, Brazil: a field and comparative study. Revista Brasileira de Zoociências 8 (2): 183-192. 2006 Abstract The estuarine dolphin or tucuxi (Sotalia fluviatilis (Gervais & Deville, 1853)) is becoming the target of many behavioral and ecological studies. Nevertheless, an ethogram, a basic tool for more reliable research replication, is still missing. The present study aimed at contributing to a standardized partial ethogram for the behaviors of the estuarine dolphin. Behavioral patterns were recorded and compared to the available data in literature for S. fluviatilis and other species of dolphins. A total of eleven clear distinguishable patterns of behavior were carefully named and described. The ethogram obtained through this field and comparative study is an attempt to clarify the terminologies for S. fluviatilis' activity, which is important for future behavioral studies. Allied Whale Internship Announcement

Allied Whale is a marine mammal research lab of College of the Atlantic, in Bar Harbor, Maine. Allied Whale conducts population and foraging ecology of fin whales and humpback whales in the Gulf of Maine using photo ID, genetic, and stable isotope sampling. The lab also responds to marine mammal strandings on the Maine Coast and operates the Bar Harbor Whale Museum. Allied Whale is dedicated to education through research, and relies upon student and volunteer help with photo ID, catalogue curation, marine mammal stranding response, and museum operation. Summer fieldwork, in which students and volunteers are encouraged to take part, is conducted from the mainland as well as from our offshore marine research station, using a small fleet of research vessels, and aboard local whale watch boats. Interns for the 2007 field season will be involved in data collection and analysis, and various other research and marine mammal rescue operations. Interns will spend time working on the water, either from rigid hull inflatables or from a 26' cuddy-cabin vessel. Research activities are varied, but may include photographing and biopsying fin whales and humpback whales, conducting biological surveys, oceanographic data collection, and observing behavior from shore-based and whale-watch platforms. Boats are launched from the mainland, as well as from our research station on Mount Desert Rock, a small island 25 miles offshore, where interns will be based for short periods of time. Many days will also be spent working in the office matching/cataloguing photographs collected from the current and previous seasons, entering and transcribing data, and maintaining field equipment. There will be some opportunity to work on other projects, if interested, though the main focus of the internships will be on data collection and analysis. Other ongoing projects include: - Working with our Marine Mammal Stranding Response Program to respond to stranded marine mammals along the Maine coast, perform health assessments, obtain NOAA level A data, and transport animals to rehab facilities - Assisting in the operation of the Bar Harbor Whale Museum, which includes exhibit curation and interpretation, as well as public outreach - Collecting photo ID, location, and behavior data of fin whales and humpback whales while aboard local whale watch boats, in conjunction with the whale watch interns Two interns are needed from late May/early June to mid September. A fee covering housing and a deposit must be paid in full by May 1. All positions are unpaid, however room and board is provided during stays on MDR. These intensive educational courses provide experience in specialized research techniques, consisting of field sessions and lectures. The courses will last 6 or 13 days, and - weather permitting - we will be out on the water at least during 4 or 9 of these days respectively. Navy Rejects California Coastal Commission Whale Safeguards LOS ANGELES, California, February 14, 2007 (ENS) - In a letter to the California Coastal Commission, the U.S. Navy said Monday that it will not comply with a decision by the commission that requires the Navy to protect whales during two years of naval sonar exercises planned off the southern California coast. The Navy said it is, "unable to agree to the conditions regarding the use of mid-frequency active (MFA) sonar as set forth" by the commission. They Nayv challenged California's jurisdiction to regulate the use of sonar more than three miles off its coast. At a public hearing in January, the bi-partisan commission voted eight to one to condition its approval of the Navy's exercises on a set of 14 requirements, 12 of which were aimed at lessening harm to whales and other marine mammals from the blasts of mid-frequency active sonar. The naval exercises are scheduled to take place in waters that host blue whales, humpbacks, gray whales, dolphins, porpoises and other sensitive and iconic California species. The move is a violation of longstanding precedent and the commission's authority, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council, NRDC. "The Navy's rejection of the common-sense protective measures required by the commission for sonar training is an attack not just on whales and other marine life off our coast but on the commission itself," said Joel Reynolds, senior attorney and director of the Marine Mammal Protection Project at NRDC. "The Navy's novel notion that California has no authority to protect marine mammals ignores the fact that the commission has been doing so for years under federal coastal protection laws," Reynolds said. Among the requirements presented by the Coastal Commission to the Navy were - avoidance of key marine mammal habitat, such as the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary and the gray whale migration route; a requirement to power down at nighttime and in other conditions of low visibility, when whales are hard to spot; and expanded safety zones around ships to keep from blasting nearby whales. In its letter, the Navy agreed only to submit any monitoring reports it prepares to the commission. Whales around the world have been found dead or dying following encounters with mid-frequency military sonar. In 2004, whale biologists examined the link between Navy sonar and whale strandings and concluded that the evidence of sonar causation is "very convincing" and "overwhelming."
