Dear MarMamers We would like to share our new open access article that measures the metabolic contribution of digestion in the bottlenose dolphin (https://doi.org/10.1242/jeb.251474) This study quantified the heat increment of feeding (HIF), the metabolic cost of digestion, in eight common bottlenose dolphins using breath-by-breath respirometry. After consuming standardized fish meals (1659–2658 kcal), metabolic rate rose by ~37% above fasting levels and peaked ~60 min post-feeding, returning near baseline within two hours. Scaled to a full day, digestion increased daily metabolic needs by ~8.2% of basal metabolic rate, indicating a moderate energetic impact comparable to other marine mammals. Using breath-by-breath respirometry, we measured oxygen consumption (V̇ O2) in eight common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) before and after feeding standardized meals (1659–2658 kcal of capelin and herring). Metabolic rate rose by ∼37% above resting levels, peaking 60 min after feeding before returning to baseline within 2 h. When scaled across the day, digestion increased daily metabolic needs by ∼8.2% of basal metabolism, similar to values reported for Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) and harbour seals (Phoca vitulina), where HIF contributes 4–10% of daily energy expenditure. This study provides the first multi-individual estimate of HIF in dolphins and suggests that the energetic cost of digestion is a moderate contribution to overall daily metabolism, refining energetic models and improving prey requirement estimates for cetaceans in the wild.

Science of the Total Environment 1007:180701. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2025.180701 Abstract As meso- and apex predators in food webs, marine mammals can bioconcentrate persistent environmental contaminants like per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Although the presence of PFAS is widely reported in the marine environment, there is a lack of data for cetaceans in Oceania. We investigated whether ecological habitat influences bioconcentration patterns across a range of odontocete (toothed whale, dolphin and porpoise) species. We measured PFAS in liver samples (n = 127) from 16 cetacean species representing four families inhabiting four marine habitats along the Aotearoa New Zealand coastline. We analysed six perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids, ten perfluoroalkyl sulphonic acids and four precursor compounds in the context of sex, body index, habitat and species/family using generalized linear mixed models. Results showed that marine habitat remained a weak predictor of PFAS burden. Instead, biological factors including sex and age class best explained the levels of PFAS detected across all species and habitats. We offer first important insights on PFAS levels across several new taxa globally, including endemic endangered species and poorly described polar vagrants. Our findings further highlight how the ubiquitous nature of PFAS pose a higher risk to odontocetes across different seascapes than previously anticipated. Dear all, My co-authors and I are pleased to share our recent publication: "A whale in a well: Co-exposure of a persistent organic pollutant mixture and cetacean morbillivirus on killer whale (Orcinus orca) primary fibroblasts" Abstract: Killer whales (Orcinus orca) accumulate high levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which have been linked to immunomodulation. Over the past decades, large-scale mortality events associated with cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV) have affected cetacean populations, and concerns have been raised about the role of contaminants in exacerbating these outbreaks. However, establishing cause-effect relationships in free-roaming cetaceans remains a significant challenge. In vitro approaches present unique potential for furthering our understanding of the effects of multiple environmental stressors in marine mammal health. In this study, we used primary fibroblasts cultured from wild Norwegian killer whale skin biopsies (n = 6) to assess how exposure to POP mixtures affects cell viability and CeMV replication. Our findings demonstrate that CeMV successfully replicates in killer whale fibroblasts, with the viral replication significantly increasing over the duration of the experiment. POP exposure led to a concentration-dependent decrease in cell viability and a significant increase in viral replication. These results validate killer whale primary fibroblasts as a valuable in vitro tool for the study of co-exposure of POPs and morbillivirus on toothed cetaceans. Moreover, these findings support the need for further research to confirm the role of contaminants in intensifying the severity of CeMV infections in the wild. My research focuses on humpback whale diet in a changing sea ice ecosystem. It reports work conducted as part of one of the case studies within the Population Consequences of Multiple Stressors (PCoMS) project. The modelling approach presented here builds on methods described in two previous papers, available at https://doi.org/10.1111/oik.09801 and https://doi.org/10.1098/rsos.240050. Abstract: Exploring solutions to expanding industrial activities and climate change requires assessments of the combined effects of multiple stressors on wildlife populations. We present a spatially explicit state-space model for the health, survival, reproduction, and somatic growth of individuals in a long-lived, wide-ranging species. The model is applied to critically endangered North Atlantic right whales (*Eubalaena glacialis*) to investigate the combined effects of three primary stressors affecting the species’ viability: entanglements in fishing gear, vessel strikes, and prey availability. We estimate exposure to these stressors in space and time and assess how their effects may combine in the pathway from exposure to vital rates. Results suggested that changes in whale distribution after 2010 led to increased entanglement risk. Poorer prey conditions were associated with an increased effect of carrying fishing gear, but, overall, results on combined effects were not conclusive and depended on model formulation. We also incorporated the estimated effects of stressors into a population viability analysis to explore alternative scenarios of stressor reduction. This integrated analysis highlighted the importance of the declining trend in maximum body length and its effect on reproduction, in addition to the documented impact of entanglements on survival. Model development and application elucidated critical data needs and the influence of underlying mechanistic assumptions. Specifically, models for the combined effects of stressors hinge on the availability of extended longitudinal measurements of individual health and life history outcomes, extensive datasets on the spatio-temporal distribution of stressors, and information on individual space use affecting rates of exposure to stressors. Lessons from this data-rich case study will support the generalisation of the modelling approach to other long-lived species where measuring the population-level consequences of multiple stressors directly is unfeasible. New publication: How Robust is Eschrichtius robustus? A Novel Photographic Index of Body Condition From Boat-Based Photographs of Gray Whales

Dear Marmam Community, Please check out our recent article in Marine Mammal Science detailing a new method for assessing gray whale body condition: Title: How Robust is Eschrichtius robustus? A Novel Photographic Index of Body Condition From Boat-Based Photographs of Gray Whales Abstract: Although the eastern North Pacific gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) population has recovered from population declines associated with whaling, they are closely monitored, especially in association with Unusual Mortality Events. Metrics to improve assessment of the health of individual animals, when averaged, are valuable to inform monitoring and management. We used 30 years of photographic data of a unique gray whale feeding aggregation to develop and test a new methodology for assessing body condition. This group of individuals (20 as of 2021, but 11 in the study group), known as the Sounders, regularly enter Puget Sound, Washington, USA, to forage on ghost shrimp in the spring and early summer. Almost 35,000 images were examined and 729 were selected as being suitable to assess individual body condition. Geometric measuring tools in open-source image analysis software were used to measure a novel body condition angle, °BC, as a proxy for changes in blubber thickness. This °BC varied significantly with the day of the year, with increases in blubber thickness observed as individuals progressed through the feeding season. Other metrics, such as year and surfacing interval, were not found to have a significant effect on °BC within this dataset. This novel index of body condition illustrates the opportunity to develop new methods to quantitatively assess change in individuals at both seasonal and annual scales. Expansion of this method to the larger eastern North Pacific gray whale population may allow for a more detailed examination of fluctuations in body condition to better understand both environmental and anthropogenic impacts. There is also potential for adaptation of the method to apply to historic photo catalogs of other baleen whale species, creating opportunities for enhanced data-driven management plans.
