Animal Physiologist - University of Valle (Cali, Colombia) The Department of Biology at Valle University (Cali) seeks a motivate scientist in the general area of Animal Physiology. Applications are invited for a full-time, tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor with start date of August 13, 2007. Applicants must hold a M.Sc. in Zoology (preferred Ph.D.) or a closely related field, have a record of research training, a potential for developing an externally funded research program in Animal Physiology, and record of peer-reviewed publications. The successful candidate will enhance and complement existing programmatic strengths in the areas of zoology, environmental biology, conservation and biodiversity with basic research program in some aspect of Animal Physiology. Areas o emphasis in which the Department seeks to develop further expertise include, but are not limited to, Animal Ecology and evolutionary biology. Teaching responsibilities will include upper-level animal physiology (undergraduate), and Evolution (undergraduate) or animal embryology (undergraduate), a course of candidate´s choice (postgraduate), as well as supervising undergraduate and postgraduate research/internships. Spanish language is required. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a rigorous research program involving graduate and undergraduate students.. NMFS revised application instructions

The Permits Division, National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Office of Protected Resources has posted revised instructions for applying for a permit for research on or enhancement of marine mammals and threatened and endangered species. These instructions are applicable to requests for permits to take, import, or export species and specimens of species under NMFS jurisdiction, including the following: all cetaceans; pinnipeds (except walrus); sea turtles in water; shortnose sturgeon; smalltooth sawfish; and white abalone. We have also posted revised instructions for submitting a letter of intent under the General Authorization for Level B harassment of marine mammals and for applying for a marine mammal commercial or educational photography permit. New publication: GIS Analysis of Ice-Breeding Seal Strandings

Dear Marmamers, We are pleased to announce the recent publication of our article: David E. Harris & Sat Gupta. 2006. GIS-based Analysis of Ice-breeding Seal Strandings in the Gulf of Maine. Northeastern Naturalist 13(3):403-420. Abstract: Phoca groenlandica (harp seals) and Cystophora cristata (hooded seals), two species of ice-breeding seals, are being sighted more frequently onshore in the Gulf of Maine since 1990, but little is known about their behavior in this ecosystem. We obtained records of 904 ice-breeding seal stranding locations in the Gulf of Maine between 1996 and 2002 from NOAA Fisheries and used a geographic information system (GIS) to conduct group-wise comparisons by species (using non-parametric techniques), and to determine the predictors of high seal-stranding density (using ordinal logistic regression analysis). Compared to harp seals, hooded seals stranded closer to deep water, farther north, and near different intertidal shoreline types. Predictors of high seal-stranding density included being closer to an offshore basin, deep water, public land, and areas of lower human population. These results may reflect seal behavior and reporting bias. Reprints are available on request by email to deharris(a)usm.maine.edu. Whaling and Sealing Publications Disseminated at History Conference

Two weeks prior to the Seventh Conference, there are about sixty registrations from 13 countries. Friday evening starts with the traditional „greasy gossip“, a casual warm-up reunion in a Cologne pub, where you can meet old friends and make new ones from all over the whaling world. Recording devices for cetacean vocalizations

Dear all, I am looking for some advise on the best way to record cetaceans vocalizations using a hydrophone deployed from a small boat. I heard that a Digital Audio Tape (DAT)Sony TDC-8 a is a good option for recording many species. This model is not available new at the moment because it is discontinued by Sony, but I could get a used one. Considering DAT technology is almost obsolete right now, maybe you can recommend me any digital recorders or other devices that you use to record cetacean vocalizations on the field. I am specially interested in sounds of blue, sperm, humpback, and killer whales and many dolphin species ocurring off Peru, for this reason I would need a recorder with a wide range of frequencies, from 20Hz to 22000Hz, like the Sony model I mentioned above. Spring Internship at Whale Center of New England

Marine Mammal Research Internships (For a detailed description and more information, please see our website at www.whalecenter.org/intern.htm) The Whale Center of New England, located in Gloucester, MA, is a non-profit research organization involved with the study of the behavior, ecology, and natural history of the whales and dolphins found in the waters off of Massachusetts. The Whale Center is also heavily involved with habitat conservation and education programs. We are currently looking to fill research internships for the spring (January 29 - May 26) semester of 2007. The Whale Center of New England internship provides experience needed to further pursue fields in marine biology and animal behavior. It is our goal to provide college students and recent graduates with the opportunity to collect valuable information important to the marine mammal field and to see how this information is used in management and conservation efforts in this area. Each internship session offers different experiences in marine mammal science that will depend on the season. These duties may include, but are not limited to: extensive photo-identification and computer work (training provided), field data collection aboard commercial whale watching vessels and our 27' research vessel Silver II, attendance at necropsies (whale autopsies), marine mammal stranding response, harbor seal surveys and attendance at conferences and meetings. Internship applicants should have the following: * A background in biology, zoology, or related field * Some knowledge of research methods and design * An ability to work, live and communicate well with others * Enthusiasm and dedication to work long days (sometimes 12 hours or more) in the field or lab * Completed their freshmen year at the time of application In order to apply for an internship: please send a resume, a cover letter detailing your reason(s) for applying, one letter of reference, and an updated transcript.
