New Publication: Large Whale Entanglement in Ireland

Hello, We have recently published a paper, "*Assessing the risk of whale entanglement in pot fisheries in Irish waters*". In this paper we highlight areas with a high risk of entanglement and discuss known entanglements in Ireland. Additionally we address the merits of citizen science in risk assessment and address gaps in the current fisheries data. Abstract: Entanglement of large whales in static fishing gear, specifically in pot fisheries, is an increasing issue worldwide. This study assessed the entanglement risk of Ireland’s three most frequently observed large whales, humpback (*Megaptera novaeangliae*), minke (*Balaenoptera acutorostrata*), and fin whales (*Balaenoptera physalus*), with pot fisheries within the Irish Exclusive Economic Zone. Pot fisheries in Ireland are steadily growing, increasing the likelihood of present, and future, negative interactions with whales. An estimated 85% of the Irish pot fisheries take place within the 12-nautical mile limit, resulting in an increased vulnerability for whales distributed near the coast. This study determined the likelihood of co-occurrence of pot fisheries and large whales, identified areas and times of the year where the risk of entanglement was highest, and reports on actual entanglement cases associated with pot fisheries. Humpback and minke whales have a higher risk of entanglement off the southwest and south coasts of Ireland, while higher-risk areas for fin whales were located off the south coast. This study also identified data gaps that need to be addressed to improve future assessments and identify risk areas at a finer spatial resolution. New paper on the 'dolphin of Venice'

We just published an article on a solitary common bottlenose dolphin that has established its residence in a tourist hotspot: Saint Mark's Basin in Venice, Italy. After roaming the lagoon for three months, it settled in Venice, with a preference for waters adjacent to San Marco Square – one of the world’s busiest tourist destinations – where it was consistently observed feeding on mullet (Mugilidae). The Venetian Lagoon was historically part of the range of Adriatic dolphins, but such records have been rare since the 1970s. The 'dolphin of Venice' soon became a celebrity, resulting in people attempting to feed, touch and interact with the animal, as well as guided tours and erratic approaches by boats. Such inappropriate behaviour by humans increased disturbance, and the risk of propeller/boat strikes and habituation to human proximity. Following evidence of disturbance and lesions, in November 2025 an attempt was made to drive the dolphin away from the high-risk waters of the San Marco Basin using boats and acoustic deterrents. However, the dolphin immediately returned. Here, we report on the monitoring efforts and actions undertaken, review the relevant regulations, and discuss the options of 1) acoustic deterrence, 2) capture/removal, and 3) tolerance combined with best management practice. We argue that the occurrence of such a charismatic animal could serve as a model for human-wildlife coexistence in urban environments, demanding compliance with existing laws, area-specific measures, appropriate implementation and patrolling, resolute deterrence of inappropriate human behaviour, continued monitoring, and efforts to promote the type of social change that leads to widespread appreciation of, and respect for, wildlife. Cetacean Research Programme Volunteer Position, Kaikōura, New Zealand Whale Watch Kaikōura is seeking a dedicated volunteer to assist with long-term cetacean research based in Kaikōura, New Zealand, with a primary focus on sperm whale photo-identification. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to an established, year-round cetacean research programme working in one of the world’s most accessible sperm whale habitats. Dates & Commitment Whale Watch Kaikōura conducts cetacean research year-round. We are currently seeking volunteers for placements from now through to August 2026. A minimum commitment of three consecutive months is required, with no breaks during this period. The volunteer must be available for approximately 30 hours per week, depending on survey scheduling and weather conditions. Fieldwork This position involves participation in boat-based cetacean surveys, with a primary focus on sperm whale photo-identification. The successful applicant will gain valuable experience in: * Conducting systematic cetacean field surveys * Identifying individual sperm whales using fluke characteristics * Recording behavioural, environmental, and GPS data * Archiving and managing photo-identification data * Database use and structured data entry Fieldwork is conducted from a 24 m tourism vessel and is weather-dependent. Survey days may include weekdays and weekends depending on conditions. The work can be physically and mentally demanding. It requires flexibility, as there may be periods without surveys due to weather, followed by multiple consecutive field days when conditions are favourable. This role provides hands-on experience in cetacean research, survey techniques, behavioural observations, and applied photo-identification methods. New publication on Pontoporia blainvillei – Drone-calibrated acoustic footprints in franciscana dolphins

Dear MARMAM colleagues, My co-authors and I are pleased to share our new publication in *Endangered Species Research*: *Drone-calibrated acoustic footprints infer group size in franciscana dolphins (Pontoporia blainvillei)* The article is available at: https://www.int-res.com/abstracts/esr/v59/esr01470 *Abstract* Conventional visual surveys of the cryptic franciscana dolphin (*Pontoporia blainvillei*) are constrained by turbid near-shore waters and the species’ tendency to occur in small groups. We combined passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) with synchronized drone surveys to calibrate an acoustic footprint detection model and infer group size directly from acoustic data. Click trains were detected in PAMGuard, localized, and clustered using HDBSCAN into click-train clusters (CTCs). Drone imagery provided visual group sizes during synchronized sampling periods. A 2-step spatiotemporal matching procedure paired CTCs with visually observed groups, and an independent manual audit estimated a 6.4% false-positive rate, which was used to correct automated detections. For paired clusters, we fitted generalized linear models with an offset for animal-seconds and alternative distance terms; AIC supported a linear negative binomial model. The calibrated baseline acoustic footprint at the trackline was r₀ = 0.028 click trains animal⁻¹ s⁻¹ (95% CI: 0.014–0.056; CV = 0.34; R² = 0.54), equivalent to 1.68 min⁻¹ (95% CI: 0.84–3.36). We obtained 28 paired CTCs from 8 visual groups and applied the calibration to 267 unpaired CTCs. Predicted group sizes had a median of 1.34 individuals (95% CI: 0.79–2.57; CV = 0.15), consistent with predominantly small units. This framework provides a practical pathway from clicks to counts and represents a key step toward passive acoustic density estimation for this endangered species. Kind regards, João Mura

New method to non-invasively imaging the lungs in marine mammals

Dear Marmamers We are sharing our new open access study just published in "Journal of Experimental Biology" where we successfully used electrical impedance tomography (EIT) to measure tidal volume in bottlenose dolphins and Cape fur seals, both on land and in seawater. EIT is a non-invasive imaging technique that tracks changes in air distribution in the lungs in real time. It's widely used in human medicine, but until now it hadn't been validated for marine mammals in water. One of the biggest hurdles has always been the conductive marine environment, but we show that it works. In both dolphins and fur seals, EIT closely tracked spirometry-derived tidal volume and produced dynamic regional images of ventilation. That means we can now see not just how much air moves, but where it moves within the lungs. The exciting part is what this makes possible. For decades, our understanding of lung compression, alveolar collapse, and gas redistribution during diving has relied heavily on models and indirect evidence. This study lays the groundwork for directly visualizing those mechanics in living animals. While we're currently limited to surface and static conditions, this is an important step toward imaging lung function during controlled dives. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT)measures real-time changes in thoracic impedance, and provides continuous, regional maps of pulmonary air distribution. We validated EIT for estimating tidal volume (VT) in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops spp.) and Cape fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus) both on land and in water. EIT reliably tracked VT in both taxa, showing strong within-trial consistency, with between-trial variability attributable to belt placement, body position and electrode contact. EIT also generated dynamic functional images of regional ventilation, revealing spatial and temporal patterns of lung filling and emptying. These results demonstrate that EIT is the first non-invasive imaging method validated for marine mammals in seawater, representing a critical step toward visualizing lung function during diving.

If you're interested in learning how to quickly analyze the famous inter-call intervals in whale songs on large datasets in a standardized way and ultimately spend more time understanding what these patterns mean for populations and conservation, register now! Measuring ICI across thousands of calls is a time-consuming, labor-intensive task that is prone to errors. The aim of this workshop is to introduce new analysis techniques for evaluating IC in mysticete calls across large datasets with the ultimate goal of moving toward a standardized approach for conducting global analyses. The first part of the workshop could be a hands-on session, during which participants can apply the methods to their own pre-prepared datasets or to demonstration datasets provided. This session will allow participants to gain practical experience with the analytical tools, explore the effects of different parameters, and receive guidance on best practices for processing large datasets. The second part of the workshop could consist of a brainstorming session focused on the interpretation and significance of variations in ICI across sites and years.
