Marine Mammal Research and Conservation Internship – Coastal Cambodia Khmer Ocean Life (KOL) is a UK non-profit in partnership with a local NGO Samaky Organization in Cambodia, based in the coastal town of Kampot. The organisation focuses on supporting the conservation of marine mammal species (Irrawaddy dolphins, Indo-pacific humpback dolphins, Indo-pacific finless porpoises, and dugongs), and their habitats, through research, capacity building, community collaboration, and outreach. We are looking for marine mammal research and conservation interns to join the team who can commit to two months in 2025. We conduct our work year-round, and applicants are encouraged to apply any time. One-month applicants will be considered and long-term applicants are encouraged to apply. *What to expect?* Internships are customized to each intern based on personal and academic skills and interests, and interns are encouraged to specialize in targeted areas of conservation including social media management and ecological research. We are open to collaborations with universities for the completion of a thesis or associated report. You are also welcome to conduct your own research or outreach project with us, depending on your interest, skill set, and length of stay. Our work is multifaceted and extends into multiple areas of conservation. While a large part of our project activities and intern training involves data collection and analysis, we prioritize internal and external capacity building for our team members and the local community. Prioritizing the empowerment of community members allows us to engage with conservation work in a variety of ways and become immersed in science and local life. Santos Abstract: We applied stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes to investigate the trophic ecology of four large pelagic predators from the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago (FNA), northeastern Brazil: spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris), yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri), and great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda). We found no significant divergences in δ13C and δ15N values or trophic positions between male and female spinner dolphins; and the high isotopic niche overlap indicated limited sexual segregation. Our data indicate overlap in the isotopic niches of yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and great barracuda, but significant segregation between these pelagic predators and spinner dolphins. While spinner dolphins occupy higher trophic positions, reflecting their consumption of mesopelagic squids, the fishes seem to target a broader prey spectrum, with yellowfin tuna showing a more specialized diet. This partitioning likely reduces interspecific competition for prey in the FNA, with different species occupying distinct ecological niches. The results presented here provide important information about the trophic relationships among pelagic predators from the FNA, which is crucial for their conservation in a region where they are vulnerable to local anthropogenic activities. New publication: Drone-based observations of scarring in humpback whales in the New York Bight

Elevated humpback whale mortality, predominantly in juveniles, has occurred in the Northeast US since 2016. The New York Bight, a region with dense shipping and fishing vessel traffic, has become a hotspot for these strandings. Scarring patterns can provide information on anthropogenic threats, as well as predation and behavior. We used drone imagery to examine scarring reflective of entanglements, vessel strikes, killer whale interactions and bottom feeding in both juvenile and adult humpback whales in the New York Bight. The vast majority of both adult (87.1%) and juvenile (86.8%) humpbacks showed entanglement scars, indicating that humpbacks frequently interact with fishing gear across age classes. Vessel strike scars were observed more frequently in juvenile whales (14.2%) than in adults (2.2%), in contrast to prior observations north of our study area in the Gulf of Maine, though the difference was of borderline significance (mean p-value 0.051, Fisher’s Exact tests on 1000 bootstrapped populations incorporating uncertainty in length measurements). These results support previous suggestions that juvenile humpbacks in the New York Bight may be particularly vulnerable to vessel strike due to inshore and surface feeding, and suggest that vessel strike scars may be obtained locally. Killer whales are thought to primarily target young animals, and killer whale scars were observed more often in juveniles (11.6%) than adults (4.4%), though this difference was not significant (mean p-value 0.26). Jaw scuffing indicative of bottom feeding was observed more frequently in adults (68.9%) than in juveniles (27.4%; mean p-value 3.47 x 10−5), suggesting that this behavior is acquired as whales mature. Our findings underscore differences in behavior between adult and juvenile humpback whales and highlight the exposure of humpback whales to anthropogenic threats in heavily urbanized coastal regions. Dear community, It is with great pleasure that we share our recent article: "Living Under Pressure: Suitable Areas for an Endangered Coastal Dolphin Overlap With Intense Human Activities", published in Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems (Vol. 35, Issue 6). The species' preference for shallow, restricted areas within this estuarine complex highlights its high exposure to anthropogenic stressors, reinforcing the urgent need for effective management and conservation measures to mitigate risks in these critical feeding and nursing grounds. New Publication: A computational framework to characterize and compare the tonal repertoires of toothed whales

Oswald, Manali Rege-Colt, Emma Gagne, Eric Angel Ramos, Joëlle De Weerdt, Nicola Ransome, Laura J. May-Collado Abstract: Toothed whales, despite being one of the most acoustically specialized lineages of vertebrates, lack detailed vocal repertoire characterizations comparable to those of songbirds and primates. Current descriptions often lack standardization, limiting interspecies and intraspecies comparisons critical for understanding the contribution of phylogenetic, social and environmental drivers of vocal repertoire evolution. This study reviews six bioacoustics software packages (Luscinia, Beluga, ARTwarp, DeepSqueak, PAMGuard and SASLab) using machine learning for toothed whale whistle detection, extraction of whistle fundamental frequency contours and categorization. We applied these tools to acoustic recordings from four dolphin species to create a primer with guidelines and scripts for those interested in replicating the analyses. The results show that manual (Luscinia) and semi‐automated (Beluga, DeepSqueak) detection and extraction of whistles yielded a greater number of usable contours than the fully automated approaches (PAMGuard and SASLab). The integration of hard and fuzzy unsupervised machine learning analyses provided a multifaceted characterization of whistle repertoires based on identified patterns and structures. The hard approaches from ARTwarp and DeepSqueak were used to categorize signals based on contour similarity. Both packages produced similar numbers of categories. DeepSqueak was faster in categorizing contours, but ARTwarp is more flexible in how similarity thresholds are set. We used these categories to demonstrate estimating relative whistle repertoire size using three methods—Coupon Collector, Capture–Recapture and Hill Numbers. While the methods differ in their assumptions, there was consensus in the ranking of species based on repertoire size. We favour the application of Hill numbers to measure repertoire size and compositional similarity, as this method addresses uneven sampling. The fuzzy approach used the frequency and temporal features extracted from the traced contours in Luscinia to evaluate repertoire similarity in acoustic structure using the package's built‐in multivariate tools. This primer equips researchers to generate more detailed toothed whale repertoire characterizations by integrating machine learning tools with mathematical and community ecology approaches. DOLPHIN RESEARCH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM IN PORTUGAL

*BACKGROUND: *The Marine Environment Research Association - AIMM, is a non-profit, non-governmental organization focused on the research and conservation of marine species, running an ongoing study of cetaceans in southern Portugal (Algarve). This project aims to obtain baseline information on species occurrence, behavior, and social structure of the local cetacean populations in order to obtain scientific data to support conservation measures and inform marine management policies. The main species observed are Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), and Harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), although other species such as Minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) and Fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) can also be sighted. AIMM Interns are young, hard-working individuals who are willing to contribute to the association and support on-going activities, while experiencing fieldwork at sea, learning data collection and processing methodologies, and being a part of AIMM's team of researchers and marine biologists. All team members and participants share accommodation, house tasks, knowledge and experience in an friendly and multicultural environment. Interns have the additional option to enrich their time with AIMM by beginning or improving their SCUBA skills with a PADI-certified instructor, hiking, kayaking, surf classes and others. *WHERE:* Albufeira, Algarve, Portugal *WHEN:* The field season lasts from June to end of November 2025. The minimum internship attendance is 14 days. *FIELDWORK: *The field trips are conducted in AIMM's research vessel, Ketos, commercial dolphin watching boats and from the shore. Fieldwork is dependent on weather conditions. The field days can be intense, especially in the peak of summer but are fulfilling and good fun. New publication: Validation of indicators for the welfare assessment of captive Yangtze finless porpoises (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis asiaeorientalis)

Normando , Xavier Manteca ,Deborah Temple, Yujiang Hao *Abstract The Five Domains model (FDM) is a widely accepted framework for developing welfare assessment tools across various contexts, including wild animals under human care. However, only two protocols have been developed for captive cetaceans. This study aimed to create a welfare assessment protocol based on the FDM for captive Yangtze finless porpoises (YFPs; Neophocaena asiaeorientalis asiaeorientalis). Indicators relevant to YFPs’ welfare were selected via a literature review, and validated through two consecutive questionnaire surveys, four discussions with a panel of three experts, and a blind review conducted by three additional cetacean welfare experts. This process resulted in the validation of 46 welfare indicators, which were used to develop the Yangtze Finless Porpoise-Welfare Assessment Protocol (YFP-WAP) which, in its final version, contains 150 indicators. Moreover, intensity levels (the degree of impact of each indicator on the porpoises’ welfare), valence (whether the indicator contributed positively or negatively to the porpoises’ welfare state), and mental states associated with each indicator were also assigned by the panels of experts. Additionally, a confidence score was assigned to each indicator’s intensity level, valence, and mental state that reflected experts’ level of uncertainty regarding the indicator impact on the YFPs’ welfare. This rigorous validation process provided transparency, helped ensure minimal bias, and reduced the likelihood of incorrect indicator elimination due to expert subjectivity. By integrating expert knowledge, the YFP-WAP provides a comprehensive approach to evaluating both positive and negative welfare states, supporting the ongoing care and management of YFPs in captivity. Association ELI-S is a non-profit organization committed to the protection of whales and dolphins in Nicaragua since 2016. Our project includes scientific research, policy advocacy, and environmental education. Clustering of feeding lunges

On behalf of my colleagues, I am pleased to announce the publication of the last one of my PhD chapters in Marine Ecology Progress Series, focusing on the use of different feeding lunges at different depths in Bryde's whales, available at this link https://www.int-res.com/abstracts/meps/v761/meps14845 TITLE How deep is their lunch: Inshore South African Bryde’s whales shift attack mode at different depths. ABSTRACT Understanding animal foraging behaviour can answer pertinent questions in behavioural ecology and help conservation efforts. Baleen whales have extreme adaptations for feeding on some of the smallest animals. One species of special interest is the Bryde’s whale Balaenoptera edeni, which feeds in various ways across different ecosystems. No previous study on foraging kinematics exists for the vulnerable inshore population of Bryde’s whales B. edeni brydei in South Africa. Over 2 consecutive years, we deployed multisensory camera-tag dataloggers on 8 Bryde’s whales in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. Combining supervised and unsupervised clustering algorithms, we analysed 190 feeding lunges to investigate whether different foraging techniques were performed and, if so, at what depths. The whales showed 3 distinct ways of attacking their prey: (1) ‘Slow lunges’, which started and concluded at a very low speed, regardless of the depth at which they were performed; (2) ‘Neutral lunges’, occurring between 40 and 100 m depth, in which whales had high initial speeds and moved vertically in the acceleration phase of the lunge while being less acrobatic; and (3) ‘Ambush lunges’, used at shallow depths (<30 m), with the whale pitching upwards and accelerating faster compared to other techniques, often reaching the surface right after lunging. When engulfing prey, individual whales switched between different techniques throughout a deployment.
