Anim Reprod Sci *277* 107838. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.anireprosci.2025.107838 Abstract The female reproductive environment modulates sperm fertilization potential and may exert numerous selective forces on sperm during fertilization. Exploring cetacean (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) sperm responses to variable extracellular salinity and pH, either from seawater exposure or from the vaginal environment, offers insight into the selective pressures exerted on sperm in aquatically-mating mammals. This study examined common bottlenose dolphin (*Tursiops truncatus*) sperm motility, plasma membrane integrity, morphology, and acrosome integrity upon semen exposure to biologically relevant extracellular salinities (0–40 ppt) and *in situ* measured dolphin vaginal pHs (5–7.4). Sperm motility and kinematics were assessed by computer-aided sperm analysis (CASA). Sperm plasma membrane integrity, morphology, and acrosome integrity were assessed *post-hoc*. Dolphin sperm motility and plasma membrane integrity significantly decreased when exposed to solutions ≥ average oceanic salinity (35 ppt). Vaginal pHs were highly variable among individuals (pH 5.04–7.4). Sperm motility appeared optimal at pH 7 and sperm viability decreased significantly at pHs < 6.5. There was more inter-individual variation in sperm motility and kinematics when exposed to pHs < 7 compared to any salinity. Optimal extracellular salinity (8 – 15 ppt) and pH (pH 7) ranges that improve sperm motility and viability can inform dolphin semen processing methods for cryopreservation. I remeber in the past to have been in touch with people about the cleaning of bones, but it was years ago ! I am coming back to you because we are now trying to assemble cetacean bones to do complete skelettons... We are looking for good anatomic picture of a dolphin's hyoid apparatus, and sternum and also a good representation of sternum an ventral ribs would be the best of a Kogia breviceps will be of interest We have search for such documents in the internet but didn't find what we are looking for. Perhaps in Marma community some of you have already been confronted to such anatomic question. Despite their significant ecological and cultural roles, marine mammals remain underreported in this part of the world. This special edition aims to shed light on ongoing research, conservation initiatives, and emerging issues affecting marine mammals in the WIO. We invite you to share your expertise, insights, and experiences by contributing articles, stories, or research summaries. Marine Mammal Observer and Hydroacoustic Technician vacancies in Squamish, Canada.

Hi All, Roe Environmental is seeking marine mammal observers and hydroacoustic technicians to provide environmental monitoring for the construction of a marine terminal at the Woodfibre LNG project near Squamish, BC. MMOs will be responsible for conducting visual observations for marine mammals. Hydroacoustic techs will deploy and operate hydrophone monitoring equipment. The roles are individually dedicated, but may be interchangeable for candidates with experience, or the desire to develop professional skills. Long hours at monitoring stations on barges, boats and land shelters may be required during certain construction periods. There may be opportunities to diversify into separate environmental technician roles, including monitoring of sensitive construction works, water quality sampling, wildlife monitoring and erosion and sediment control inspections. Highly experienced MMOs and PAMOs, please reach out if you are interested in more senior roles (the below information predominantly applies to entry, junior and intermediate level positions). POSITION TERM Positions available for immediate start with a temporary contract to February 2026. Candidates not immediately available, please reach out to discuss later starts. Opportunity for continued full-time employment. POSITION LOCATION The position will involve monitoring on the Woodfibre LNG project in Squamish, BC. Candidates from outside of the immediate Squamish area can expect to be housed in a private room on the Floatel (converted cruise ship) moored on site during their shift. REQUIREMENTS Position to require shift work. Typically 2 weeks on, 1 weeks off. Candidates should expect to work night and day shifts, as required. Normal working days are likely to be up to 10 to 12 hours. PREFERRED CAPABILITIES Marine Mammal Observer or wildlife monitoring experience. Knowledge of bioacoustics and experience with hydrophone operation is an asset, but training will be provided. Familiarity with whale and pinniped species identification. Comfortable working on boats and in outdoor settings (long hours, year-round). Strong interpersonal skills for client and contractor communications, and collaboration with a large team of observers. Strong data collection and handling skills. Experience working on highly dynamic construction sites is an asset. Field work experience in aquatic biology (e.g., fish and amphibian surveys/salvages and habitat assessment), terrestrial wildlife and birds (e.g., breeding bird nest surveys, raptor surveys, wildlife and species at risk surveys) and vegetation assessment is an asset. Humpback Whales Blow Poloidal Vortex Bubble Rings - For posting

Marine Mammal Science. https://doi.org/10.1111/mms.70026 This note focuses onbubble rings, a unique and sparsely documented genre of bubble featuresproduced by baleen whales, although well-described among odontocetes, includingAtlantic bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus, McCowan et al. 2000), belugawhales (Delphinapterus leucas, Hill et al. 2011), and Orinoco dolphins (Iniageoffrensis, Gewalt 1989). Not to be confused with a bubble net (spiral-shapedfish trap, a ring is a poloidally spinning, air-infused vortex. At StellwagenBank in the North Atlantic Ocean, Payne (1995) described them as “madlyspinning doughnut-shaped clouds that look like giant smoke rings about threefeet in diameter that rise rapidly to the surface.” Payne opines on theirfrequency, noting: “Only one particular whale has been known to engage in thisactivity, and even she seldom does it. However, once she gets going, theprocess becomes obvious and is done vigorously. Here we report on 12ring-production episodes involving 39 bubble rings produced by 11 individualhumpback whales. The aim of this research is to describe contexts in whichhumpback whales produce bubble rings and provide insights into their potentialfunctions. We examine evidence for Payne's (1995) hypothesis that bubble ringsare associated with foraging as defined by being produced in the presence ofprey and feeding activity (vertical lunges, open mouths, extended ventralpleats). Next, we examine the hypothesis that rings are associated with socialaggression, as proposed for wild spotted and bottlenose dolphins (Herzing 1996,2000; Pryor 1990; Pryor and Kang 1980). We use Baker and Herman's (1984) andPitman et al.'s (2017) definition of aggressive behavior in humpback whales,which includes high levels of arousal, wheezed blows, trumpet blows, slashingof the tail and flippers, and charges directed toward antagonists (e.g., malerivals, killer whales [Orcinus orca]). We also examine whether rings are linkedto inquisitive behavior in which whales approach boats and swimmers (Mangott etal. 2011; Swartz 2018). New publication on the suitability of assessing long-term population-level impact from construction of a single wind farm on North Sea harbour porpoises

ABSTRACT: Continued development of offshore renewable energy is urgently needed to support the goal of achieving global Net Zero targets; however, concerns persist about impacts of construction noise on acoustically sensitive species such as the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). Population impact modelling frameworks have been proposed as a quantitative way to evaluate whether disturbance, as experienced by individual animals, might result in negative population-level consequences, and suggested as useful tools in support of Environmental Impact Assessments. However, questions remain regarding model applicability to projects of different spatial scales. This study applied two such models (iPCoD and DEPONS) to assess potential population-level impacts of construction of the East Anglia ONE wind farm on North Sea harbour porpoises. Both models were parameterised using project-specific input values underpinned by static passive acoustic monitoring data. The various iPCoD and DEPONS scenario simulations did not predict any long-term population-level impacts in response to pin-piling activities. This is likely due to discrepancy in scale between localised, short-term impacts of constructing a single wind farm in comparison to the range of the North Sea porpoise population. DEPONS modelling also revealed no long-term negative impact of pin-piling on predicted porpoise numbers within the boundary of the Southern North Sea Special Area of Conservation. Current results highlight the importance of scale when using either modelling framework to evaluate the likelihood of long-term population-level impacts on abundant, wide-ranging species from individual offshore renewables developments. Cumulative population effects from human activities, including other construction projects, commercial shipping, hydrocarbon exploitation, and fisheries bycatch, are not well understood but can be approached with the modelling frameworks explored here. However, such effects will not be apparent when applying these models to individual construction projects and in isolation from coexisting pressures. There is a risk that ignoring co-occurring pressures may result in an incomplete picture of simulated population trajectories that should be considered carefully when these models are proposed to evaluate impacts of offshore renewable construction projects. We advocate that long-term population impact modelling should be applied on a regional basis and take additional wind farm developments as well as other cumulative pressures into consideration. New publication on aerial monitoring to inform whale conservation in California

Thank you, Jess Morten Abstract NOAA Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary (CINMS), located off Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties in California, maintains a consistent marine mammal aerial monitoring program to improve understanding of endangered baleen whale species distribution and applies these findings to better inform whale conservation management actions in the Santa Barbara Channel. Ongoing boat-based research surveys and tagging efforts take place in this region, offering valuable broadscale spatial and temporal data. However, they occur too infrequently and not at relevant spatial or temporal scales to accurately inform policy measures. From 2017 to 2022, CINMS conducted systematic monthly survey flights focused on the heavily trafficked shipping lanes in the Santa Barbara Channel. Aerial survey data show that endangered humpback (*Megaptera novaeangliae*), fin (*Balaenoptera physalus*), and blue (*B. musculus*) whales are concentrating in areas of the Santa Barbara Channel that are not included in current predicted density models based on data from ship-based research surveys. Additionally, endangered whales are present in the region during times of the year that fall outside of historical seasons suggested by ship-based surveys and modeling efforts. The current coastwide density models predict that the highest density of whale aggregation sites are farther west and offshore, while the aerial monitoring data identify additional whale hotspots within the Santa Barbara Channel. Integration of the aerial whale monitoring data in conservation management actions at finer spatial and temporal scales is important for mitigating the risk of fatal ship strikes on these endangered whales. El Santuario Marino Nacional de las Islas Channel (“CINMS”, por sus siglas en inglés) de la Administración Nacional Oceánica y Atmosférica (“NOAA”, por sus siglas en inglés), ubicado frente a las costas de los condados de Santa Bárbara y Ventura en California, mantiene un programa constante de monitoreo aéreo de mamíferos marinos, con el objetivo de entender mejor la distribución de las especies de ballenas barbadas en peligro de extinción y aplica estos hallazgos para informar de mejor manera las acciones de gestión de conservación de ballenas en el Canal de Santa Bárbara. En esta región se llevan a cabo estudios de investigación y esfuerzos continuos de marcado desde embarcaciones, los cuales ofrecen valiosos datos espaciales y temporales a gran escala. Sin embargo, estos estudios se llevan a cabo con muy poca frecuencia y no en escalas espaciales o temporales relevantes, como para recabar información precisa que pueda ser aprovechada para crear medidas o políticas de conservación. Desde el año 2017 hasta el 2022, el “CINMS” realizó vuelos de estudio sistemáticos mensuales enfocados en las rutas de navegación de mayor tráfico en el Canal de Santa Bárbara. Early bird discount ($75) available until June 7. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides a thorough introduction to wildlife policy in the United States. First, students will learn about the motivations behind policy, who creates policy, and why policy is important for wildlife biologists and scientists. Students will also learn about how policy is implemented and enforced in practice and about the different agencies involved. The course also covers several specific wildlife policies that are influential in the United States, including The Lacey Act and the Endangered Species Act. The final module of the course focuses on marine life and examines the Marine Mammal Protection Act and other relevant marine policy. Throughout the course, we will discuss how these policies influence wildlife management initiatives and vice versa. Students will be asked to think critically and discuss their thoughts in a number of discussion board posts and complete quizzes to gauge their understanding of the material.
