Publication on porpoise distribution investigated with citizen science

Dear colleagues On behalf of co-authors, it my pleasure to announce our new publication on Harbour porpoise distribution investigated through citizen science, titled “Finescale distribution and seasonality of harbour porpoises investigated with citizen science” Full paper here: https://journal.iwc.int/index.php/jcrm/article/view/959 Abstract: Information on the distribution of harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) in the Western Baltic has been obtained by passive acoustic monitoring, visual surveying and acoustic surveying. Here, we collected complementary data on the presence of porpoises around the Danish Island of Funen using citizen science. Porpoise sightings were reported with the custom‐made mobile app ‘Marine Tracker’, disseminated to the public through community meetings, newspaper articles, radio interviews and posters. App users could choose between three types of reports: ‘single porpoise’, ‘multiple porpoises’ and ‘mother & calf porpoises’. A total of 7,755 credible porpoise sightings were reported from Funen between 2019 and 2022. These observations were primarily concentrated around larger harbour towns, but also in less populated parts of southern Funen, which previously had not been recognised as a significant porpoise habitat. A high proportion of ‘mother & calf’ observations in this area may indicate its importance for future conservation efforts. Citizen science data provided insights into the spatial and temporal distribution of porpoises, particularly the timing and spatial distribution of ‘mother & calf’ pairs during summer months. Our study highlights the possibilities of citizen science as a tool to complement traditional surveying techniques to understand marine mammal distribution. Whale & Dolphin Conservation Commonwealth Corps Education & Outreach Specialist The mission of the Commonwealth Corps service internship program is to engage Massachusetts residents of all ages, backgrounds, and identities in direct service to strengthen communities, address critical needs, and increase volunteerism. Through hands-on experience, Commonwealth Corps members gain professional skills and valuable knowledge while positively impacting communities in our state. The Massachusetts Service Alliance (MSA) is a private, nonprofit agency that oversees the program and supports host site partners and members to find success throughout the program year. The two Commonwealth Corps members with Whale and Dolphin Conservation will serve 10 months in a full-time capacity. They will join a diverse corps of members across Massachusetts who share a common desire to explore their passions and expand their network in service to their communities and the Commonwealth. The mission of Whale & Dolphin Conservation (WDC) is to amaze people with the wonder of whales and dolphins and inspire global action to protect them. WDC will host two full-time Commonwealth Corps members who will serve as Education & Outreach Specialists to educate people of different ages, backgrounds and abilities in Massachusetts. Through their service, members will help increase conservation literacy of marine mammals by increasing our number of individual contacts, seek and build strategic relationships with schools, teachers and community partners, and develop high-quality, inquiry-based lessons and activities that will continue to be utilized for years to come. In addition, they will leverage 50 volunteers that will be engaged in education & outreach. What You’ll Do: Essential Responsibilities: • Complete a minimum of 1500 hours of service, serving through June 20, 2026. • Attend a minimum of 6 Commonwealth Corps trainings and service events held by MSA post orientation. • Participate in a minimum of 1 hour (full-time members) of MSA-related activities each week. This include filling out timesheets, completing a bi-monthly reflection or check-in, or other MSA-related tasks or activities. • Manage WDC’s volunteer program • Plan and delivery WDC volunteer orientation • Train & mentor WDC volunteers on our volunteer program opportunities in education & outreach and Marine Animal Rescue and Response (MARR) • Facilitate education programs for schools and communities throughout MA • Develop creative marine conservation activities, educational materials, and lesson plans connected to Next Generation Science Standards, which will complement content teachers are teaching in class and help them meet learning goals • Develop and complete a project by completion of the service term. Project topics could include expanding the volunteer program throughout MA and developing a children’s marine mammal membership program. Marginal Responsibilities: * Attend community events (such as festivals, farmers markets, STEM events, etc) * Seek and build relationships with schools, teachers, and community partners statewide to implement various WDC education programs * Be a part of the greater Commonwealth Corps community, including participating in cross-site learning groups, writing a short profile for the CC newsletter, connecting with other members on our online platforms, and attending optional social/service events. Playback experiment highlights detection range differences between commonly used PAM devices: C-POD, F-POD and SoundTrap<https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0320925> doi.org Abstract: Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) is a valuable tool for monitoring acoustically active small cetaceans such as the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), with a range of devices commonly used across studies. However, to ensure comparability of findings, there is a need to compare the ability of devices to detect acoustic signals. Using a playback approach, we determined the detection probability and effective detection radius/area (EDR/EDA) for co-deployed C-POD (Cetacean POrpoise Detectors), F-POD (Full waveform capture POD) and SoundTrap acoustic monitoring devices. We conducted playbacks of harbour porpoise recordings across two transects at a range of distances from moored devices, while accounting for a range of variables likely to influence the detection probability of playbacks. Distance from the devices influenced the detection probability across all devices, and a significant difference between transects was also found for the C-POD, possibly due to different ambient noise conditions. The maximum detection distance of the playbacks for the SoundTrap and the F-POD was between 400 - 500m, and EDR was estimated at 297m (EDA 0.276 km2) and 241m (EDA 0.181 km2), respectively. The maximum detection distance for the C-POD was lower, at 300 - 400m, and an EDR of 220m (EDA 0.153 km2). A lower EDR was calculated for harbour porpoise buzzes compared to clicks across devices, due to lower source level of buzzes, suggesting that time spent foraging may be underestimated in PAM studies. The results highlight how detection ranges may differ across commonly used PAM devices, affecting comparability of detection rates across studies. EDR/EDA is an important prerequisite for PAM-derived density and abundance estimates. As such, understanding how devices differ is essential for comparing studies and appropriate planning of long-term acoustic monitoring projects, particularly where estimates of abundance are a key goal. Protected Species Observer Certification Course April 26-27

MPSC is offering an online training course that provides Protected Species Observer (also known as Marine Mammal Observer) certification on April 26-27, 2025. This training is approved by the federal agencies Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) in coordination with National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to provide Protected Species Observer Certification for geological and geophysical/seismic surveys, and the certification is often accepted in many other regions or industries where monitoring and mitigation is required for reducing impacts to protected species. Course cost includes the instruction, advice on applying to PSO positions, the professional certification, and the provision of various regulatory documents and supplementary identification guides which will be yours to keep. This course will examine the regulations for reducing impacts to marine mammals, sea turtles, and protected fish, how to locate and identify the animals, and the monitoring and objective reporting that is required for submission to regulatory agencies. After discussing regulatory requirements, we will examine key identifying traits and behaviors of the different protected species, as well as the key visual cues which can enable location of protected species in a dynamic and rapidly-changing environment. The course also includes discussions on how to prepare and pack for life offshore. The live, interactive discussions for this course provide a personalized approach to learning as we discuss how to identify protected species and how to document impacts to the animals. Discussions for this course will also include best practice methods for living and working with other PSOs and vessel crew within a collaborative team environment, in order to effectively advise on the regulatory measures required to document and reduce impacts to protected species. By monitoring for marine mammals, sea turtles, and protected fish, advising on the mitigation measures that are required, and documenting impacts through impartial and unbiased reporting, PSOs serve a crucial role in the conservation of protected species during industry or research operations. Announcing the BioDCASE 2025 challenge

For the colleagues who want to develop/use AI models (to put it one word..), we kindly invite you to participate in the challenge by developing any kind of models that answer the task specifications. As in any data challenge, this is an opportunity for our community to compare models in a FAIR way and thus contribute to build altogether a genuine state of the art in marine bioacoustics. All modalities are described on the task page presentation. For the colleagues who don't want to develop/use any AI model (especially within the tight time period we can understand..), you can also take part in the challenge through the most popular analysis method of any bioacoustician.. manual annotation ! Indeed, in addition to the classical data challenge, we will organize a "challenge" on comparing the results of different annotators .. our multi-annotator campaign has already started, you can join it whenever you want! The amount of data to annotate is totally adjustable on your availability.. especially if you are a marine bioacoustician, annotating even only a few spectrograms would already be very precious for this study.. One week until manuscript submission deadline - 3rd Special Issue on the Effects of Sound in the Ocean on Marine Mammals

Dear Colleagues, The submission deadline for manuscripts to be considered in the 3rd Special Issue on the Effects of Sound in the Ocean on Marine Mammals (ESOMM 2024) to be in Aquatic Mammals is a week away. The submission deadline is 15 April 2025 to submit manuscripts for consideration. This special issue is open to all interested colleagues, not only participants at the symposium in September 2024. The focus of the September ESOMM-2024 meeting was to link science to policy and regulation with a combined representation of research, policy, and regulatory communities in presentations. The goal was to facilitate and reinforce this multi-stakeholder interaction. Originating as a NATO meeting, the historical focus for ESOMM was the environmental effects of (military) sonar sound; but over the years other sound sources have increasingly been considered as well. Exchange of knowledge was encouraged between different communities and industries on other (impulsive) sound sources, such as underwater explosions, air-guns, and pile-driving sound. These are the topics for the special issue content. This Special Issue is scheduled for September 2025 publication, with real-time publication of accepted articles before the deadline. Contact: r.boys(a)massey.ac.nz Live stranded cetaceans are often found in debilitated conditions and end-of-life (EoL) decisions, including euthanasia, may be required to prevent further welfare compromise. Attention has predominantly been on euthanasia methods, while the decision-making process, communication strategies and ongoing support for individuals involved have received comparatively little focus. This is surprising given the socio-cultural and legal differences among countries which may impact EoL decisions. Indeed, recent research suggests that specific guidance (e.g., by the International Whaling Commission), are inconsistently implemented (Boys et al., 2022; Stringfellow et al., 2022). This workshop will address the various rationales and circumstances around euthanasia to enable open, honest discussions on: 1. Whether euthanasia should be undertaken and what other EoL options exist; 2. When EoL decisions should be enacted and what factors to consider; 3. Differences in application of EoL decisions depending on single versus mass strandings or unusual mortality events; 4. What training and post-event support exists or is needed (at individual and community level); 5. How to communicate the importance of EoL decisions to the public and media. Our workshop aims to address these often-overlooked aspects of euthanasia at live strandings to highlight the training and support required to ensure the best welfare outcomes for both animals and people.
