SR3 is dedicated to promoting the health and welfare of marine wildlife in the Pacific Northwest and in 2021 opened a marine mammal and sea turtle rehabilitation hospital in Des Moines, WA. JOB TYPE: Full Time, hourly, seasonal position, Approximately 32-40 hrs/week. Duration of position runs from May 1st-October 31st 2025. Work schedule is Saturday - Wednesday with an occasional weekend day off. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES - Play an active role in the oversight of husbandry care of rehabilitating animals, including but not limited to medication administration, sample collection and processing, monitoring and adjusting diets, providing enrichment and preparing for and assisting with diagnostic and medical procedures. - Oversee and participate in husbandry care, including but not limited to diet preparation, gavage feeding, enclosure cleaning and maintenance, water quality monitoring, and environmental enrichment. - Serve as the daily shift lead, providing leadership, oversight and training for volunteers and interns. - Responsible for mentoring interns and volunteers in various aspects of animal husbandry and facility tasks. - Create and maintain accurate daily husbandry and medical records. - Communicate regularly with the veterinarian, hospital staff and interns regarding management of active medical cases including, but not limited to, medical procedures, treatments, husbandry/nutrition, and behavioral enrichment. - Respond to public questions and concerns about stranded or distressed animals and other general inquiries. - Perform other duties as assigned. Our new short video shows how science, technology, and collaboration are trying to improve and make safer the life of these iconic marine giants: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwOh6zStnxY (~4 min) The history of SAvE Whales in brief: A population of sperm whales was discovered in the Hellenic Trench by the Pelagos Cetacean Research Institute in 1998. By 2004 ship-strikes were soon identified by Pelagos Institute as the main threat for the survival of this endangered population. Modelization of sperm whale presence and marine traffic in collaboration with IFAW showed that small changes in shipping routes can reduce the collision risk and almost eliminate the problem. However, where routes can’t be changed, the SAvE Whales system offers real-time solutions to alert mariners to impose slow down measures to prevent collisions. SAvE Whales, which stands for “System for the Avoidance of ship-strikes with Endangered Whales”, was first developed in a pilot project between 2019 and 2021 by Pelagos and FORTH, fully funded by OceanCare. It offers a pioneering technology, serving as a complementary response measure to the threat of vessel strikes. A Memorandum of Understanding, singed in June 2024, by the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy, the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency, OceanCare and Τhe Green Tank provides the management and funding framework for the scaling up and the full implementation of the system in the Kythira Strait by 2028. The preparation fieldwork of the up-scaling to a full year operating SAvE Whales 2.0 started in 2024 with funding by OceanCare and the support of research boat rental by the University of Manchester-PlasticHeal project. Analogy of the dolphin jaw to a metamaterial leaky wave antenna for sound directional detection. *Journal of Sound and Vibration*, 118987. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jsv.2025.118987 Abstract The hollow jaws of dolphins are filled with specialised ‘acoustic fats’ that connect to the inner ear and are considered as the main sound receiving structures. The jaw, modelled as a periodic structure, has been proposed as a directional receiver at high echolocation frequencies (20 -150 kHz). Considering an array of scattering elements, a model had been proposed that generated an angular dependent band gap to locate the incoming echo. However, the jaw function at lower frequencies (4 – 20 kHz), is not clear, although it might aid in the acoustic localisation of signature whistles from conspecifics. Herein, an underwater test on a bottlenose dolphin jawbone filled with paraffin wax (density similar to acoustic fats) showed frequency responses shifting in spectral peaks as a function of the incoming signal angle at whistle fundamental frequencies. These spectral responses were found similar to those of an in air acoustic metamaterial leaky wave antenna for which signature whistles were presented. Therefore, it is suggested that the odontocete jaw, at low frequencies, might be analogous to an acoustic prism aiding to resolve the direction of arrival of whistle emissions. However, most studies aimed at investigating acoustic variability rely on the manual measurement of acoustic parameters, and the implementation of multivariate techniques, which represent only partially sound FM. Thus, innovative modelling approaches able to capture local FM dynamics are needed for tonal sounds modelling. These kinds of methodological developments in bioacoustics might be key for further understanding animal behaviour and ecology. * We propose the application of a functional data analysis (FDA) approach to model extracted FM patterns, which entails the transformation of acoustic signals into continuous functions. We describe a Raven-to-R FDA workflow for modelling tonal sounds and we highlight two of its potential applications for classification aims and FM analysis in relation to behavioural, social, and environmental factors. For illustrative purposes, the approach performance was tested on FM patterns (contours) of signature whistles emitted by bottlenose dolphins (/Tursiops truncatus/), to investigate their acoustic variability and potential information content. * Our results show that tonal sounds are inherently of functional nature and can be treated as such for FM analysis. We found that building the FDA sound curves using 25 B-spline basis functions was the most appropriate setting for the functionalisation of dolphin whistles. Our approach was able to accurately reconstruct the FM patterns of the modelled tonal sounds and even to capture their fine-scale modulations, with a precision of 80%. Functional clustering showed an accuracy up to 89% for short whistles. Estimated functional coefficients of the regression model suggested that different contextual factors have a significant effect on the FM patterns of SWs. * The adoption of an FDA approach appears to be quite promising for the study of frequency-modulated tonal sounds, both for classification aims and in-depth FM analysis. The limitations and advantages of the approach were discussed. We developed and tested a new methodology able to fill knowledge gaps in animal communication, and we anticipate it will lead to advances in the ethological and ecological understanding of wild animal populations.
