FWC-Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) Wildlife Research- Marine Mammal Section Research Associate Position Overview and Responsibilities: Leads or assists with the coordination of salvage and recovery of marine mammal carcasses for the Northwest field station. Serves as member of FWC's manatee necropsy team leading or assisting with field and laboratory necropsies on manatee and other marine mammal carcasses, record observations and complete associated necropsy reports. Responsible for carcass disposal, and cleaning of equipment and instruments. Recover marine mammal carcasses for necropsy from the Northwest region (coastal and inland waterways of Manatee County to Escambia County) of Florida. Leads or assists in manatee rescue and transport operations in the Northwest region including open water captures using a manatee capture boat. Assists the MMPL supervisor with the coordination of manatee rescue and capture operations away from designated area as needed and leads rescues in those areas as needed. Manages cetacean stranding data for MMPL responses. Manages NOAA stranding database and completes routine uploads to NOAA-NMFS data diplomat. Completes and updates level A cetacean information. Responsible for cetacean data requests. Manages samples collected from stranded cetaceans. Assists with manatee necropsy report editing. Supervises assigned staff. Duties include but are not limited to: recruitment, training, planning and directing work, reviewing performance with employee, and ensuring compliance with Commission and FWRI rules, policies, and procedures. Serves in regional on-call status between 8am and 5pm on holidays in rotation with other MMPL staff members and on occasional weekend days as needed for the purpose of responding to manatee emergencies. Serves in statewide on-call status between 5pm and 8 am Friday through Thursday and all day for state holidays during assigned week in a weekly rotation with other FWRI field staff. Responds to marine mammal strandings outside of normal work schedule as needed or assigned. Responsible for the oversight of repairs and maintenance of MMPL laboratory and field equipment including repairs and general maintenance of vehicles, boats, and trailers. Dear MARMAM community, My name is Carla Patulny, and I am a PhD student at Griffith University under the supervision of Professor Susan Bengtson Nash as part of the Southern Ocean Persistent Organic Pollutants Program. My research focuses on humpback whale diet in a changing sea ice ecosystem. We are currently seeking to establish inter-annual baselines for stable isotope values in Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba). It reports work conducted as part of one of the case studies within the Population Consequences of Multiple Stressors (PCoMS) project. The modelling approach presented here builds on methods described in two previous papers, available at https://doi.org/10.1111/oik.09801 and https://doi.org/10.1098/rsos.240050. Abstract: Exploring solutions to expanding industrial activities and climate change requires assessments of the combined effects of multiple stressors on wildlife populations. We present a spatially explicit state-space model for the health, survival, reproduction, and somatic growth of individuals in a long-lived, wide-ranging species. The model is applied to critically endangered North Atlantic right whales (*Eubalaena glacialis*) to investigate the combined effects of three primary stressors affecting the species’ viability: entanglements in fishing gear, vessel strikes, and prey availability. We estimate exposure to these stressors in space and time and assess how their effects may combine in the pathway from exposure to vital rates. Results suggested that changes in whale distribution after 2010 led to increased entanglement risk. Poorer prey conditions were associated with an increased effect of carrying fishing gear, but, overall, results on combined effects were not conclusive and depended on model formulation. We also incorporated the estimated effects of stressors into a population viability analysis to explore alternative scenarios of stressor reduction. This integrated analysis highlighted the importance of the declining trend in maximum body length and its effect on reproduction, in addition to the documented impact of entanglements on survival. Model development and application elucidated critical data needs and the influence of underlying mechanistic assumptions. Specifically, models for the combined effects of stressors hinge on the availability of extended longitudinal measurements of individual health and life history outcomes, extensive datasets on the spatio-temporal distribution of stressors, and information on individual space use affecting rates of exposure to stressors. Lessons from this data-rich case study will support the generalisation of the modelling approach to other long-lived species where measuring the population-level consequences of multiple stressors directly is unfeasible. New publication: How Robust is Eschrichtius robustus? A Novel Photographic Index of Body Condition From Boat-Based Photographs of Gray Whales

Dear Marmam Community, Please check out our recent article in Marine Mammal Science detailing a new method for assessing gray whale body condition: Title: How Robust is Eschrichtius robustus? A Novel Photographic Index of Body Condition From Boat-Based Photographs of Gray Whales Abstract: Although the eastern North Pacific gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) population has recovered from population declines associated with whaling, they are closely monitored, especially in association with Unusual Mortality Events. Metrics to improve assessment of the health of individual animals, when averaged, are valuable to inform monitoring and management. We used 30 years of photographic data of a unique gray whale feeding aggregation to develop and test a new methodology for assessing body condition. This group of individuals (20 as of 2021, but 11 in the study group), known as the Sounders, regularly enter Puget Sound, Washington, USA, to forage on ghost shrimp in the spring and early summer. Almost 35,000 images were examined and 729 were selected as being suitable to assess individual body condition. Geometric measuring tools in open-source image analysis software were used to measure a novel body condition angle, °BC, as a proxy for changes in blubber thickness. This °BC varied significantly with the day of the year, with increases in blubber thickness observed as individuals progressed through the feeding season. Other metrics, such as year and surfacing interval, were not found to have a significant effect on °BC within this dataset. This novel index of body condition illustrates the opportunity to develop new methods to quantitatively assess change in individuals at both seasonal and annual scales. Expansion of this method to the larger eastern North Pacific gray whale population may allow for a more detailed examination of fluctuations in body condition to better understand both environmental and anthropogenic impacts. There is also potential for adaptation of the method to apply to historic photo catalogs of other baleen whale species, creating opportunities for enhanced data-driven management plans. Francisco Avellà, a pioneer in Mediterranean monk seal research and conservation, has passed away

It is with the utmost sadness from our hearts that we inform the MARMAM community of the passing of Francisco (Xisco) Avellà on the 2nd of December 2025. Xisco was the driving force behind the Fondo Para la Foca del Mediterráneo (FFM), and a true pioneer in the study and conservastion of the Mediterranean monk seal. From Mallorca (Balearic Island, Spain) he promoted conservation and awareness projects at the end of the 20th century, helping to protect the last specimens of the western Mediterranean. His work marked a turning point in the preservation of this threatened species. Thanks to the commitment of Xisco and his collaborators, the FFM developed awareness campaigns and population-monitoring programmes along the coasts of Spain and North Africa. Xisco Avellà stands as an example of dedicated environmental activism, and his legacy continues to inspire those working today toward the recovery of this species' sub-populations. The entire monk seal community owes him a great debt for his extraordinary work, which began in the Balearic Islands during his teenage years. His premature departure leaves a void that will be difficult to fill.
