Hi All, The University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine would like to send notice that registration for our spring online courses are open. Aquatic Wildlife Health Issues is offered in two versions: an online undergraduate course (VME-4013 ) and a graduate level course (VME-6011). These classes are both designed to introduce students (upper level undergraduate and graduate) and professionals (with an AA or higher degree) to the natural history, anatomy, physiology, behavior and common health issues of aquatic species: whales and dolphins, seals and sea lions, manatees, sea turtles, crocodilians, fish and invertebrates. Experience with digital SLR cameras and conducting high quality marine mammal photo identification. Experience recruiting, training, and managing volunteer database. Requirements: Employment in this position is contingent upon a satisfactory Level 1 background check at no cost to the candidate. Office hours are from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, Monday through Friday. Not eligible for Telework. Serves in local on-call status on occasional weekend days and holidays and serves in statewide on-call status between 5pm and 8 am Friday through Thursday in a weekly rotation with other FWRI field staff. Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation is accepting applications for Marine Mammal Research internships in the Aegean Sea in Greece for Winter 2025/2026 & Spring 2026. Few positions remaining - apply now! Archipelagos’ marine mammal research internships provide an opportunity to join year-round field work on dedicated research vessels, offering experience with collecting data on the bioacoustics, behaviour, and photo-identification of several marine mammal species. The Aegean Sea is one of the most important remaining marine biodiversity hotspots in the Mediterranean with important populations of 4 dolphin and 2 whale species, as well as the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. Archipelagos’ research is dedicated to addressing biodiversity abundance and distribution in this area and aims to enable efficient conservation action. By joining our team, you will be contributing to research devoted to the protection of marine life in the Mediterranean Sea. Few positions are still available for winter and spring placements on Samos Island in the eastern Aegean Sea, Greece, while you can also apply for the summer and autumn 2026 seasons. This internship program is open to students, graduates, and researchers in marine, ecological, environmental sciences, or veterinary medicine. As part of our team, you can expect to gain skills and hands-on experience in conducting boat surveys, training on monitoring protocol and cetacean identification, data analysis, scientific writing, photo-ID, acoustic monitoring, behavioural study of cetaceans, seabirds identification, sea turtle identification, monitoring of the Mediterranean monk seal, as well as basic marine mammal first aid and necropsy. Successful applicants must be able to work both independently and as part of a dynamic, multicultural, multidisciplinary team. During multi-day expeditions, the research team lives on the boat, so applicants must be able to live in tight quarters for several days at a time. Fluency in English is required, as well as motivation to live in a small island community with simple facilities. The full paper is available here: https://academic.oup.com/beheco/advance-article/doi/10.1093/beheco/araf122/… Abstract: Recent theoretical integration of the spatiotemporal and cultural elements of animal behavior has led to increasing calls to incorporate animal culture into conservation. Implementation of this idea remains sparse due to disconnects between the theoretical concept of considering culture in animal conservation and the spatiotemporal approaches typically employed in conservation practice. Here we propose that this gap can be bridged by (1) clarifying that spatiotemporal conservation interventions inherently interact with culture regardless of whether this connection is acknowledged; and (2) strategically considering feasible “entry points” for considering animal culture in conservation practice. Recent advances in dynamic management strategies indicate the capacity for modern conservation approaches to integrate additional dimensions of animal behavior, and could serve as a particularly fruitful space for considering culture. Drawing on instructive examples from cetaceans, we examine instances where protection in space and time can facilitate the conservation of culture, and where focusing on conserving culturally distinct groups can yield protection in space and time. Human interventions that explicitly consider these interwoven dimensions in practice are achievable and can enable more holistic protections for diverse taxa. The successful candidate will coordinate citizen science efforts in Northern Ireland and County Donegal, collect and manage photo-identification data, and contribute to abundance estimation and transboundary conservation assessments of bottlenose dolphins.
