Ecology and Evolution, 14, e11708. https://doi.org/10.1002/ece3.11708 Abstract: The oceanographic conditions of the Southern California Bight (SCB) dictate the distribution and abundance of prey resources and therefore the presence of mobile predators, such as goose-beaked whales (*Ziphius cavirostris*). Goose-beaked whales are deep-diving odontocetes that spend a majority of their time foraging at depth. Due to their cryptic behavior, little is known about how they respond to seasonal and interannual changes in their environment. This study utilizes passive acoustic data recorded from two sites within the SCB to explore the oceanographic conditions that goose-beaked whales appear to favor. Utilizing optimum multiparameter analysis, modeled temperature and salinity data are used to identify and quantify these source waters: Pacific Subarctic Upper Water (PSUW), Pacific Equatorial Water (PEW), and Eastern North Pacific Central Water (ENPCW). The interannual and seasonal variability in goose-beaked whale presence was related to the variability in El Niño Southern Oscillation events and the fraction and vertical distribution of the three source waters. Goose-beaked whale acoustic presence was highest during the winter and spring and decreased during the late summer and early fall. These seasonal increases occurred at times of increased fractions of PEW in the California Undercurrent and decreased fractions of ENPCW in surface waters. Interannual increases in goose-beaked whale presence occurred during El Niño events. These results establish a baseline understanding of the oceanographic characteristics that correlate with goose-beaked whale presence in the SCB. Furthering our knowledge of this elusive species is key to understanding how anthropogenic activities impact goose-beaked whales. Thank you! New publication: Cetaceans of north-western continental Africa (Morocco to Liberia): diversity and distribution

Dear colleagues, We are pleased to announce our new review article on diversity and distribution of cetaceans along the north-western continental Africa. The full article is available here: https://doi.org/10.3389/fmars.2024.1427334 ABSTRACT: The north-western coast of Africa is one of the most productive marine systems in the world, where a high diversity of cetacean species has been recorded. However, management of human activities that impact cetacean populations in the area is inadequate, in part due to poor knowledge on cetacean occurrence and the lack of systematic surveys. We reviewed existing knowledge on cetacean distribution between Morocco and Liberia and analyzed the spatial and temporal distribution of records, as well as species occurrence, further discussing the reported distribution ranges. The systematic literature review included 39 sources reporting on 36 species in the area, with a total of 2241 sightings and 2178 non-sighting records. Delphinus delphis (common dolphin) and Tursiops truncatus (bottlenose dolphin) are the two species with the highest number of sources reporting on them. This review reveals a spatially and temporally heterogeneous coverage of the area in the literature and published data on cetacean occurrence. In summary, although most of the compiled sources are recently published (2011-2020), the majority of records are from prior to 2000. In several range states, especially south of Senegal, little information is available. Therefore, the available information is unlikely to represent the current status of cetacean communities in the region. It is essential to fill knowledge gaps by increasing the collection of cetacean distribution data in the area, in order to support effective conservation measures and ensure sustainable utilization of the living marine resources in this rapidly developing region. Environmental DNA, 6, e587. https://doi.org/10.1002/edn3.587 ABSTRACT Marine mammal foraging grounds are popular focal points for marine protected area (MPA) implementation, despite being temporally dynamic, requiring continuous monitoring to infer prey availability and abundance. Marine mammal distributions are assumed to be driven by their prey in foraging areas, but limited understanding of prey distributions often prevents us from exploring how shifting prey availability impacts both seasonal and long-term marine mammal distributions. Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding could enhance the understanding of marine mammal habitat use in relation to their prey through simultaneous monitoring of both. However, eDNA applications focused on marine mammals or predator–prey dynamics have been limited to date. In this study, we assess spatiotemporal changes in the distribution and abundance of cetaceans, minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) in relation to key prey species in a newly established MPA, employing eDNA metabarcoding. We recovered 105 molecular operational taxonomic units (OTUs) from marine vertebrates using two primer sets targeting 12S and 16S genes, along with 112 OTUs from a broader eukaryotic primer set targeting 18S rRNA. Overall, key forage fish prey species, sandeels and clupeids, were the most abundant teleost fishes detected, although their availability varied temporally and with distance from shore. We also found clear spatial partitioning between coastal bottlenose dolphins and the more pelagic minke whales and harbor porpoises, paralleling availability of their main prey species. Other species of conservation interest were also detected including the critically endangered European eel (Anguilla anguilla), Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus), and the invasive pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha). This study demonstrates the application of eDNA to detect spatiotemporal trends in the occurrence and abundance of cetacean predators and their prey, furthering our understanding of fine-scale habitat use within MPAs. Future long-term monitoring of predator–prey dynamics with eDNA could improve our ability to predict climate-induced shifts in foraging grounds and enhance rapid responses with appropriate management actions. Scientific Reports. *equal contributions. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-024-65827-2 Abstract: Social information is predicted to enhance the quality of animals’ migratory decisions in dynamic ecosystems, but the relative benefits of social information in the long-range movements of marine megafauna are unknown. In particular, whether and how migrants use nonlocal information gained through social communication at the large spatial scale of oceanic ecosystems remains unclear. Here we test hypotheses about the cues underlying timing of blue whales’ breeding migration in the Northeast Pacific via individual-based models parameterized by empirical behavioral data. Comparing emergent patterns from individual-based models to individual and population-level empirical metrics of migration timing, we find that individual whales likely rely on both personal and social sources of information about forage availability in deciding when to depart from their vast and dynamic foraging habitat and initiate breeding migration. Empirical patterns of migratory phenology can only be reproduced by models in which individuals use long-distance social information about conspecifics’ behavioral state, which is known to be encoded in the patterning of their widely propagating songs. Further, social communication improves pre-migration seasonal foraging performance by over 60% relative to asocial movement mechanisms. Our results suggest that long-range communication enhances the perceptual ranges of migrating whales beyond that of any individual, resulting in increased foraging performance and more collective migration timing. These findings indicate the value of nonlocal social information in an oceanic migrant and suggest the importance of long-distance acoustic communication in the collective migration of wide-ranging marine megafauna. Beyond detecting the presence of wildlife, bioacoustic signals can reveal their behavior. However, behavioral bioacoustic information is underused because identifying the function and context of animals’ sounds remains challenging. A growing acoustic toolbox is allowing researchers to begin decoding bioacoustic signals by linking individual and population-level sensing. Yet, studies integrating acoustic tools for behavioral insight across levels of biological organization remain scarce. We aim to catalyze the emerging field of behavioral bioacoustics by synthesizing recent successes and rising analytical, logistical, and ethical challenges. Because behavior typically represents animals’ first response to environmental change, we posit that behavioral bioacoustics will provide theoretical and applied insights into animals’ adaptations to global change. New paper - Bray calls emitted by common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in offshore waters of northeastern Brazil

Marine Mammal Science, e13160. https://doi.org/10.1111/mms.13160 Underwater acoustic emissions of common bottlenose dolphins (*Tursiops truncatus*) have been extensively studied worldwide, revealing diverse acoustic repertoires across populations. This study documents the first recording of bray calls in offshore waters (>200m depth) off Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil. Conducted during environmental monitoring for a port construction project, acoustic recordings were made from December 2021 to December 2022 using high-resolution equipment. Bray calls, characterized by sequences of squeaks, gulps, and grunts, were detected primarily during foraging activities of a large group, including 27 individuals. Acoustic parameters of these calls were analyzed, revealing variability in frequency and duration compared to previous studies. Behavioral observations suggest a potential social or feeding context for these emissions. The presence of bray-whistle sequences further suggests a coordinated function during group activities. This study contributes to the understanding of acoustic diversity and geographical variation in dolphin vocalizations, emphasizing the need for comprehensive reporting to elucidate the ecological and behavioral significance of bray calls across global populations. SMM24 Workshop: AI and Marine Mammal Science

We are excited to announce the AI and Marine Mammal workshop at the SMM Conference in Perth, Australia, from 08:30 to 17:30 on Sunday, November 10: https://www.smmconference.org/workshops/#1718154442496-c6dbac38-4a6f Join us for an exciting workshop on the uses of AI in marine mammal science. Experts from various fields will discuss innovative approaches to studying marine mammal behavior, bioacoustics, and ecology. Following each presentation, a Q&A session will be held. This will be a hybrid workshop, allowing both in-person and virtual participation. Invited speakers: Kevin Bierlich, a Professor at Oregon State University, has described whales' physical condition using a combination of drone photography and computer vision. Ted Cheeseman, creator of Happy Whale, used crowdsourcing to assemble the largest dataset of humpback whale fluke photographs and utilized it to document the recovery of humpback whales in the North Pacific and the subsequent loss of almost 7,000 whales between 2012 and 2021. Denise Herzing is the Director of the Wild Dolphin Project and has been studying the behavior and ecology of spotted dolphins and bottle-nose dolphins for over 35 years. Amanda Hodgson, Professor at Edith Cowan University, monitors dugong and cetacean populations with aerial surveys and computer vision. Aiden Lundberg created an app that censuses male, female and pup elephant seals from drone photographs. Brian Miller, a researcher at the Australian Antarctic Division, analyzes passive acoustic monitoring data using machine learning techniques. David Robinson created BioLingual, which pairs an animal vocalization audio encoder with a human language text encoder allowing Zero-shot audio classification of passive bioacoustic monitoring data. Pratyusha Sharma analyzed sperm whale codas with AI, allowing her to describe their contextual and combinational structure. Naomi Rose, Researcher at the Animal Welfare Institute, and Emily Charry Tissier, CEO of Whale Seeker, have been invited to speak on ethical issues related to AI in behavioral experiments. Following the invited speakers' presentations, we will break into smaller group discussions, focusing on topics based on the expressed interests of participants. These topics might include machine learning tools for pattern recognition, current solutions for differentiating individual, species, and age/sex identification, and necessary data preparation and annotation for AI analysis. If you have specific topics or questions you would like discussed, please contact Guy Oliver at oliver(a)ucsc.edu. If virtual participants want to create their own group(s) using Zoom calls, we will try to accommodate these requests. Prior discussions with the workshop organizers will be essential to ensure the successful implementation of this option. We are striving to obtain full scholarships for virtual participants, but while we have not been successful yet, we will continue to pursue it until the start of the conference. Marine Mammal Research and Conservation Internship – Coastal Cambodia Khmer Ocean Life (KOL) is a UK non-profit in partnership with a local NGO Samaky Organisation in Cambodia, based in the coastal town of Kampot. The organization focuses on supporting the conservation of marine mammal species (Irrawaddy dolphins, Indo-pacific humpback dolphins, Indo-pacific finless porpoises, and dugongs), and their habitats, through research, capacity building, community collaboration, and outreach. We are looking for marine mammal research and conservation interns to join the team who can commit to two months: - August - September - November - December - January - February One-month applicants will be considered and long-term applicants are encouraged to apply. Internship requirements: We are looking for dedicated and motivated interns who would love to join our fantastic team of Khmer and International members. Everybody with a keen interest in marine mammals and their conservation is welcome, from University students, recent graduates, experienced conservationists, and individuals who want to gain experience in marine mammal conservation. Project site & fee description: The project is based in Kampot, Cambodia. The project office and intern accommodation are at the same site. Intern accommodation is fitted with everything you will need, it is very comfortable and right in the heart of the town. All marine mammal research training and accommodation are included in the 600 USD per month fee, but not your food, giving you freedom with your meals and the chance to explore Khmer food as you like.
