New paper on cetacean strandings along Bulgarian Black Sea coast

Dear colleagues, On behalf of my co-author and myself, I am delighted to bring to your attention the publication of our last research published by the scientific journal /Oceans/ *2024*, /5/(3), 429-441; https://doi.org/10.3390/oceans5030025 The paper summarizes 13 years of cetaceans' strandings along the Bulgarian coast in the western Black Sea. *Abstract*: Cetacean strandings are valuable sources of data about their life history, health status, population trends, and impact of threats. We examined the strandings along the Bulgarian coast of the Black Sea for a period of 13 years from 2010 to 2022. A total of 1528 cetacean strandings of all three species inhabiting the basin were recorded: 1031 harbour porpoises Phocoena phocoena, 199 bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus, 97 common dolphins Delphinus delphis, 19 delphinids and 182 unidentified. The highest numbers were observed in 2016 and 2022. Monthly peaks for harbour porpoise and bottlenose dolphin were in July and August and for common dolphin in May. An unusually high mortality of porpoise neonates was recorded in 2015 and 2016. The overall sex ratio showed a slightly higher share of males at 120:100. This bias was the most pronounced for males of common dolphins. Spatial distribution varied interspecifically but was predominantly along the southern coast. Bycatch signs were detected in 80 animals including during the turbot fishing ban period, suggesting the existence of illegal fishing operations. All of this highlights the need for better reinforcement and control to ensure both the conservation of endangered cetaceans and the sustainability of fisheries. Improvement in data collection is needed to improve the quality of information. Topic: New publication: Reintroduced European sturgeon uncovered in harbor porpoise stomachs (Eileen Hesse) Dear MARMAM, On behalf of my co-authors and myself, I am very pleased to share our latest publication in Endangered Species Research which reports on the first known predation of reintroduced European sturgeon by harbor porpoises in the North Sea. Endangered Species Research, doi: https://doi.org/10.3354/esr01342 Abstract: The European sturgeon Acipenser sturio has been of substantial commercial interest in the past. Today it is considered Critically Endangered, with only one remaining population in Europe. Fulfilling national conservation strategies and aiming for the conservation of biological diversity, Germany has released European sturgeons into their former habitats (Elbe River and its tributaries) as part of experimental measures to restore the population. However, little is known about their biology, sensitivity of life-stages to threats or trophic interactions within their former habitats. Here, we report on the first known predation of reintroduced sturgeons by harbor porpoises Phocoena phocoena and discuss predator-prey interactions in the light of sturgeon conservation. Stomach content analysis on stranded harbor porpoises revealed remains (scutes; modified ganoid scales) of European sturgeon in stomachs of 2 adult harbor porpoises (1.23%). Mean ± SD back-calculated lengths of ingested sturgeons were 26.11 ± 1.90 and 26.49 ± 1.93 cm, respectively, based on dorsal scute morphometrics. To date, no predator-prey interactions between sturgeons and harbor porpoises have been recorded in the North Sea. Future research into the diet of aquatic top predators with overlapping habitats at stocking sites of European sturgeons, transcending national boundaries, will uncover possible conservation concerns, conflicts of species-specific management interests and reintroduction success of European sturgeons. Baseline lung function values in healthy dolphins

In addition, the use of breathing frequency as a proxy for metabolic rate requires a better estimate of the normal range of tidal volume, respiratory flow, and breath durations. In the current study, we use data on clinically healthy bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops spp.) collected over a decade to define how lung function varies with body mass, age, and sex while in water or during voluntary beaching. The data show that tidal volume consistently varies with body mass both during spontaneous and forced breaths both in water and while beached. Both peak expiratory and inspiratory flow varies with body mass, but also in some circumstances with sex and age. Total and inspiratory breath durations only varied with body mass during forced breaths on land. Expired tidal volume varied with both body mass and either total or expiratory breath duration. These data provide baseline for respiratory function in healthy bottlenose dolphins and suggest that either total or expiratory breath duration provide a useful proxy for tidal volume.

Panelists Needed for SMM Science Education Workshop

Aloha MARMAM Community, The upcoming 2024 Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals (SMM) in Perth, Australia (Nov 11-15, 2024) will be hosting a full-day workshop on Saturday, November 9th entitled, *“SMMILE Toolbox: Building Inclusive Science Education Opportunities”*. See workshop description below: Science education is an excellent way to communicate science efforts, inspire the next generation of scientists and/or engage with the local community. In an effort to bridge the gap between laboratory-based science efforts and the local community, the Marine Mammal Research Program developed the Summer Marine Mammal Intensive Learning Experience (SMMILE). SMMILE is a 10-day immersive program which provides high school students from Hawaiʻi and American Samoa a unique opportunity to learn about marine mammal research, conservation, and marine protected areas within the framework of traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) in Hawaiʻi. SMMILE was developed to increase representation of Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders in the field of marine mammal science. The purpose of this marine mammal education workshop will be to provide a “SMMILE toolbox” for scientists, professionals, and graduate students to implement programs in their community. During this workshop, we plan to discuss the following topics: curriculum development, incorporating TEK and place-based learning, funding, and advertising. Education program coordinators from around the world will be invited to present about their respective outreach and teaching opportunities to provide diverse examples of successful programs. Workshop coordinators and invited speakers will lead demonstrations of the hands-on activities included in their education programs. Ultimately, this workshop aims to provide attendees with opportunities to better integrate marine mammal outreach and educational opportunities within their communities. We are seeking educators from across the globe that have led marine mammal-focused programs (for ages K-12) to participate in a panel discussion during the workshop. Ideally, we are seeking representatives from programs focused on engaging participants from historically marginalized communities. The panelist would speak about their program for 10-15 minutes and answer questions from the audience. We aim to have 3-4 panelists for this segment of the workshop. SMM24 Workshop: Stepping through a workflow of open-source tools for drone-based photogrammetry of cetaceans, from collection to analysis

Hi everyone, We are excited to offer the following workshop in Perth at SMM24 from 8:30 to 17:30 on Sunday November 10: Stepping through a workflow of open-source tools for drone-based photogrammetry of cetaceans, from collection to analysis https://www.smmconference.org/workshops/#1718154438036-06ab7c55-1474 Over the past decade, the advancement of drones has revolutionized researchers’ ability to obtain important morphological measurements (e.g., body length, body condition) on marine mammals, particularly cetaceans. In this workshop, we will present a workflow of several open-source tools to assist with obtaining and processing morphological measurements of cetaceans collected using drones. We will provide an overview of drone-based photogrammetry and the different phases of 1) Data collection (before takeoff and during flight), 2) Post-processing of imagery (image selection, measuring, linking metadata with measurements, and quantifying uncertainty), and 3) Morphometric analysis (incorporating measurement uncertainty from different drones into analyses). Participants will learn field techniques for enhancing accuracy in data collection, including how to use LidarBoX, an open-source 3D printed LiDAR altimeter system that can be easily installed and swapped between several commercial drones (e.g., DJI Inspire, Mavic, Phantom). We will also work through examples on how to use a suite of several open-source, user-friendly software, including 1) DeteX, for automated detection of cetaceans in drone-based videos to capture snapshots, 2) MorphoMetriX v2, a photogrammetry software for manual, customizable measurements, 3) XtraX, for automated measurements of body length and body condition, 4) CollatriX v2, to link important metadata with measurements and automated calculation of different body condition metrics, and 4) Xcertainty, an R package for quantifying and incorporating uncertainty based on a Bayesian statistical model. Participants are welcomed to bring their own datasets or can use ones provided. Our goal is for participants to leave this workshop with the skillset to use these hardware and software tools to enhance the quality, speed, and accuracy of obtaining important morphological measurements to monitor cetacean populations. We also hope this workshop will build a global network of drone users studying morphometry of cetaceans under similar protocols to help facilitate new collaborations. New publication on the abundance and survival of spinner dolphins off West Oahu, Hawaii

(2024) Quantifying the abundance and survival rates of island-associated spinner dolphins using a multi-state open robust design model. Scientific Reports. 14, 14764. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-024-64220-3 Abstract: Spinner dolphins (*Stenella longirostris *subsp.) occupy the nearshore waters of several Hawaiian Islands. Due to their constrained behavioral pattern and genetic isolation, they are vulnerable to anthropogenic threats. Their occurrence and behavior are well-described, yet a lack of data on their abundance and survival rates hinders optimal conservation action. Using design-based photo-identification surveys, this study estimated the abundance, apparent survival, and emigration of spinner dolphins off the Waiʻanae Coast of Oʻahu through multi-state open robust design (MSORD) and POPAN modelling. Eight seasonal field seasons, (two winter, spring, summer, and autumn) each comprised of six surveys of the study area, were completed during two consecutive years. Seasonal abundance estimates derived from the best fitting model ranged from 140 (± 36.8 SE, 95% CI 84–232) to 373 (± 60.0, 95% CI 273–509) individuals and were lowest during winter seasons. The MSORD estimated a survival rate of 0.95 (± 0.02 SE) and a Markovian pattern of temporary emigration. POPAN modelling estimated a super-population size of 633 (± 78 SE, 95% CI 492–798), reflecting the total number of individual dolphins that used the study area during the entire study period. Additional research on circum- and inter-island dolphin movements around and between Oʻahu and the Maui Nui region may shed light on both seasonal movement patterns and overall abundance for the Oʻahu/4-Islands stock. This work represents the first systematic mark-recapture effort to assess the abundance and survival rates of these highly exposed dolphins, providing valuable insights for conservation and management. 3-year postdoc on passive acoustic monitoring of cetaceans

We are seeking strong applicants for a 3-year postdoc position to start in October 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter, to work on data management and analysis of passive acoustic data of marine mammals and anthropogenic noise sources. The position is at the Department of Ecoscience, section for marine mammal research and placed in Aarhus. Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) is a key technique for monitoring marine mammals. At Department of Ecoscience at Aarhus University, we have pioneered the use of PAM in the study of harbour porpoises, both as a general tool for population monitoring, and in dedicated impact studies where the effect of human activities on porpoises are quantified. Expected start date and duration of employment This is a 3-year postdoc position (extendable); the expected start date is 1 October 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. Job description The job is anchored in the EU Horizon project DTO-Bioflow, which deals with harmonizing data streams of biological/ecological monitoring data into a centralized database structure. A key task of the postdoc will be to establish a database and a common framework for collecting, storage and sharing passive acoustic monitoring data of marine mammals, with primary focus on harbour porpoise detections made with C-PODs/F-PODs. The work will be in close collaboration with the project partners and data holders and data owners in European countries. In addition to these tasks will be involvement in other projects, depending on interests and qualifications. These projects are centered on monitoring underwater noise and marine mammals and understanding the interactions between vessel noise and other anthropogenic noise and marine mammals. Your profile To be considered for the position you must have a relevant research profile focused on marine bioacoustics with a quantitative and hypothesis driven approach. Required skills * A PhD (or equivalent) in bioacoustics, marine conservation, or similar * Strong experience with acoustic measurements and/or passive acoustic monitoring of animals, preferably measurements with multi-channel autonomous systems * Strong quantitative skills and proficiency in programming.
