Scientific Training Opportunity with the Marine Research Station in Mozambique. Over the course of five years, the BCSS marine research station had a monitoring effort of 3860 hours in the open sea of the Mozambique Channel. Its growing database now boasts records of at least nine cetacean species, documented through over 1000 sightings, totaling over 6000 animals encountered. Notably, more than 1000 of these individuals are migrating humpback whales. For those who share our passion for whales and dolphins, we invite you to join our scientific training programs during the 2024 humpback whales migration season (June-October). Please note that space is limited due to the size of our research station, so securing your spot early guarantees participation during migration peaks and under the best conditions. During your stay at BCSS you will learn about photo ID and behaviour data collection by our scientists, contributing to the expanding knowledge of one of the most awe-inspiring blue migrations. BCSS can accommodate up to 12 visitors at a time offering a serviced dormitory, a tented camp with single and double (bunks) rooms, shared bathroom facilities, a conference room, an equipped laboratory, a kitchen with an in-house chef, communal areas equipped with sofas, TV and limited Wi-Fi, an activities center, and a workshop. Visitors can enjoy several leisure areas beyond the common room. JNCC-recognised MMO course and online PSO course

Spaces are available on a JNCC-recognised MMO course for UK waters on 18th and 19th March 2024, remote delivery by Zoom. Also available is an online self-navigated PSO course for the US Gulf of Mexico and US Atlantic. The JNCC-recognised MMO course will cover all the information needed for work as a Marine Mammal Observer in UK waters. Taught by an instructor with over 25 years experience, the course content includes: 1) Impacts of noise on marine mammals 2) Introduction to activities that require mitigation 3) Legislation protecting marine mammals and marine licensing 4) Detailed examination of the JNCC guidelines for geophysical surveys, pile driving and explosives 5) Data recording and reporting requirements 6) Visual monitoring and distance estimation 7) Overview of passive acoustic monitoring 8) Working as an MMO/ PAM operator 9) Identification of marine mammals Zoom sessions will be a mixture of lectures and exercises, over 1.5 days. Any exercises not completed during the sessions can be completed in your own time. There is also an online multiple choice exam to be done at your convenience after the Zoom sessions (re-sits are possible if you don't pass first time). Each delegate gets individual feedback on their exercises and the exam. The cost of the MMO course is £180 (180GBP). On successful completion of the course (including the exercises and exam) you will receive JNCC-recognised certification, which is required for work as an MMO in UK waters. Online, self-navigated PSO course: this course is for Protected Species Observers who will be working in offshore waters of the US Gulf of Mexico and US Atlantic on activities such as geophysical surveys and offshore wind energy developments. Join us next weekend in sunny Florida for BONES & STONES WORKSHOP, March 9 & 10, from 10am-4pm, at the Marine & Coastal Ecology Research Center (MCERC), Spring Hill, FL (near Tampa). This fun weekend of educational activities is centered on marine mammal form (anatomy) and function (behavior). Workshop includes lectures, discussions, and hands-on activities. Students will learn about skeletal adaptations to aquatic life, and be taught how to identify bones and fossils, and collect, clean, and prepare them for storage or display. All class activities will be in a small group setting (limit 10 adult or mature teen participants). To celebrate the first workshop to be held in the unique learning space of the “Sea-More Trolley” classroom, MCERC has acquired funding to subsidize every registered attendee with $500/person scholarships! This lowers the total cost to only $250/person for the two-day workshop (lunches, snacks, beverages included too!). The program fee is a fundraiser for the Trolley classroom project and may be deductible as a non-profit charity donation. New Publication: Bellwethers of Change: population modelling of North Pacific humpback whales from 2002 through 2021 reveals shift from recovery to climate response

Dear friends, On behalf of all 75 (!!!) of us co-authors, pleased to share publication of a 20 year population model for N Pacific humpback whales where we’ve seen a major climate response to the Pacific Marine Heatwave Open access: https://doi.org/10.1098/rsos.231462 Abstract: For the 40 years after the end of commercial whaling in 1976 humpback whale populations in the North Pacific Ocean exhibited a prolonged period of recovery. Using mark–recapture methods on the largest individual photo-identification dataset ever assembled for a cetacean we estimated annual ocean-basin-wide abundance for the species from 2002 through 2021. Trends in annual estimates describe strong post-whaling era population recovery from 16 875 (± 5955) in 2002 to a peak abundance estimate of 33 488 (± 4455) in 2012. An apparent 20% decline from 2012 to 2021 33 488 (± 4455) to 26 662 (± 4192) suggests the population abruptly reached carrying capacity due to loss of prey resources. This was particularly evident for humpback whales wintering in Hawai‘i where by 2021 estimated abundance had declined by 34% from a peak in 2013 down to abundance levels previously seen in 2006 and contrasted to an absence of decline in Mainland Mexico breeding humpbacks. The strongest marine heatwave recorded globally to date during the 2014–2016 period appeared to have altered the course of species recovery with enduring effects. Extending this time series will allow humpback whales to serve as an indicator species for the ecosystem in the face of a changing climate. Most odontocetes are thought to produce either broadband (BB) or narrowband high-frequency (NBHF) clicks. Here, we show that the click repertoire of Hector's dolphin (*Cephalorhynchus hectori*) comprises highly stereotypical NBHF clicks and far more variable broadband clicks, with some that are intermediate between these two categories. Both NBHF and broadband clicks were made in trains, buzzes, and burst-pulses. Most clicks within click trains were typical NBHF clicks, which had a median centroid frequency of 130.3 kHz (median –10 dB bandwidth = 29.8 kHz). Some, however, while having only marginally lower centroid frequency (median = 123.8 kHz), had significant energy below 100 kHz and approximately double the bandwidth (median –10 dB bandwidth = 69.8 kHz); we refer to these as broadband. Broadband clicks in buzzes and burst-pulses had lower median centroid frequencies (120.7 and 121.8 kHz, respectively) compared to NBHF buzzes and burst-pulses (129.5 and 130.3 kHz, respectively). Source levels of NBHF clicks, estimated by using a drone to measure ranges from a single hydrophone and by computing time-of-arrival differences at a vertical hydrophone array, ranged from 116 to 171 dB re 1 μPa at 1 m, whereas source levels of broadband clicks, obtained from array data only, ranged from 138 to 184 dB re 1 μPa at 1 m. Our findings challenge the grouping of toothed whales as either NBHF or broadband species. Sea Watch Foundation Research Internships Limited places available 10th April - 19th May only. This position will suit volunteers who have a strong interest in marine conservation, are comfortable in a rural location and recognise the importance of raising awareness of the marine environment by involving the public from all age groups. This position can be very varied, so applicants will need to demonstrate their ability to deal with varied tasks from public outreach to boat based survey and scientific data collection. They will be encouraged to take initiatives with education & outreach activities in the region which due to its natural beauty receives large numbers of visitors during the summer. Sea Watch Foundation » Anglesey Internships [1] The interns will learn skills in the following areas: -Land-based marine mammal and seabird surveys -Marine mammal and seabird boat surveys -Photo-identification -Data entry and processing -Raising public awareness -Delivering environmental education initiatives and events The internship will be based on the Bodorgan Estate, Anglesey. New publication: Behavioral repertoire of dolphins that interact with artisanal fishers

Dear MARMAM community, We are delighted to share our recent publication in Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology on "Behavioral repertoire of Lahille’s bottlenose dolphins that interact with artisanal fishers". Abstract Many human cultures involve positive interactions with wildlife in the past and present. Lahille’s bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops gephyreus), for example, have developed tactics for coastal and estuarine foraging, which sustains a fishing practice known as “cooperative fshing” by traditional fishers in estuaries of southern Brazil. Here, we use aerial footage to describe the behavioral repertoire of the Lahille’s bottlenose dolphins and how it relates to the frequency of net casting by fishers in the Tramandaí Inlet. From nearly 8 h of footage from June 2017 to May 2018, we mainly observed dolphins foraging in the estuary inlet when fishers were present along the shoreline. Dolphins performed at least 27 clearly distinct behaviors and three types of movement patterns. A generalized additive model supported that the fshers interpret a subset of this repertoire (64%) as cues for casting their nets. The behavioral overview of the Lahille’s bottlenose dolphins presented here demonstrates not only a diverse repertoire for this population, but also its clear infuence on fshers’ activities. Scientific and traditional perspectives should be integrated to better understand the ecological significance of this “cooperative fshing” for both dolphin populations and fishers that depend on them. Internship opportunities in marine mammal research at the Marine and Coastal Ecology Research Center Internships programs are structured as a partnership between a mentor and an intern. These are learning experiences in marine mammal science research partnering a committed, independent, and motivated university student with a mentor who enjoys seeing students excited about discovery. UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS: There are several internships currently available for undergraduate students currently enrolled in a degree program related to marine mammal science who are interested in working with data sets in marine mammal research. GRADUATE STUDENTS: More extensive research opportunities to fulfill requirements for current master's degree programs are available. There are opportunities for meeting these requirements in research available in marine mammal science. 33 new Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMAs) in the NE Atlantic Ocean and Baltic Sea needing conservation measures

New Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMAs) highlight concerns raised for endangered species and habitats in the North East Atlantic Ocean and Baltic Sea 27th February 2024. The IUCN Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force is pleased to announce the creation of 33 new Important Marine Mammal Areas, called IMMAs, in the North East Atlantic Ocean and Baltic Sea. The newly approved IMMAs represent the final result of a full-year process, including an intensive week-long scientific workshop assessing and presenting data on candidate IMMAs which were then submitted for peer review. At the same time, a number of candidate IMMAs from previous regional IMMA workshops have been re-assessed in recent months, leading to 6 areas reaching full IMMA status. As a result, a total of 39 new IMMAs have been added to the IMMA e-Atlas and are now available for download as shapefiles with associated information. To date, 74.3% of the world ocean has been examined for IMMAs, with IMMAs comprising 13% of the examined area. IMMAs are divided into 57% within exclusive economic zones (EEZs) and 43% in international waters on the high seas. Globally, there are now 280 IMMAs and 185 Areas of Interest (AoI). Scientists and marine experts are now calling on governments to take action to utilise the IMMA tool in marine spatial planning, the creation of marine protected areas, and for performing environmental impact assessments. The North East Atlantic Ocean and Baltic Sea (NEATLO) Region covers nearly a quarter of the Atlantic Ocean. Species-rich, the region offers essential habitat for feeding and migrating humpback, blue and fin whales. There is deep water habitat for Cuvier’s and other cryptic beaked whale species in the Canary Islands, Azores and Bay of Biscay, and other offshore waters in the region. Besides the prevalent common minke whales, harbour porpoises, common dolphins, Risso’s dolphins, common bottlenose dolphins and harbour seals; there are species endemic to the region such as the critically endangered and decreasing Baltic Sea harbour porpoises and the endangered Saimaa and Ladoga ringed seals. There are several populations of killer whales including the critically endangered Strait of Gibraltar subpopulation with only 39 individuals subsisting on bluefin tuna and lately disabling or breaking the rudders off small boats traversing the region. The week-long North East Atlantic IMMA workshop, held in Hamburg, Germany, in May 2023, was supported by a grant from the Water Revolution Foundation. The meeting was organised by the IMMA Secretariat of the Task Force. The 53 workshop participants from 13 countries were drawn from the region’s top marine mammal scientists. They started by considering 395 preliminary Areas of Interest (pAoI). The pAoI selected to advance to candidate IMMAs were then defended with text supporting various criteria based on scientific evidence and detailed mapping along with a strong rationale for the boundaries chosen. After an extensive process by an independent review panel, the mapping of these areas is now complete. IMMAs are defined as discrete portions of habitat, important to marine mammal species, that have the potential to be delineated and managed for conservation. The IMMA work continues to move ahead to identify important areas in the western North Atlantic and Caribbean with a workshop in May 2024 to be held in Yucatán, Mexico. The active space of sperm whale codas: inter-click information for intra-unit communication. *Journal of Experimental Biology*, *227*(4). https://doi.org/10.1242/jeb.246442 Abstract: Sperm whales (*Physeter macrocephalus*) are social mega-predators who form stable matrilineal units that often associate within a larger vocal clan. Clan membership is defined by sharing a repertoire of coda types consisting of specific temporal spacings of multi-pulsed clicks. It has been hypothesized that codas communicate membership across socially segregated sympatric clans, but others propose that codas are primarily used for behavioral coordination and social cohesion within a closely spaced social unit. Here, we test these hypotheses by combining measures of ambient noise levels and coda click source levels with models of sound propagation to estimate the active space of coda communication. Coda clicks were localized off the island of Dominica with a four- or five-element 80 m vertical hydrophone array, allowing us to calculate the median RMS source levels of 1598 clicks from 444 codas to be 161 dB re. 1 μPa (IQR 153–167), placing codas among the most powerful communication sounds in toothed whales. However, together with measured ambient noise levels, these source levels lead to a median active space of coda communication of ∼4 km, reflecting the maximum footprint of a single foraging sperm whale unit. We conclude that while sperm whale codas may contain information about clan affiliation, their moderate active space shows that codas are not used for long range acoustic communication between units and clans, but likely serve to mediate social cohesion and behavioral transitions in intra-unit communication.
