Dear MARMAMers, The Aquatic Species Team of the Secretariat of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), which coordinates also the ASCOBANS Agreement, Sharks MOU, IOSEA Marine Turtles MOU and Dugong MOU, is offering internships throughout 2023. Following a request of the list moderator to provide more information on how this internship opportunity relates to marine mammal research and conservation, here some more information on CMS: As an environmental treaty of the United Nations, CMS (www.cms.int<http://www.cms.int>) provides a global platform for the conservation and sustainable use of migratory animals and their habitats. CMS brings together the States through which migratory animals pass, the Range States, and lays the legal foundation for internationally coordinated conservation measures throughout a migratory range. As the only global convention specializing in the conservation of migratory species, their habitats and migration routes, CMS complements and co-operates with a number of other international organizations, NGOs and partners in the media as well as in the corporate sector. The CMS Appendices cover around 130 aquatic (marine and freshwater) species, including 51 species of cetaceans, 6 species of pinnipeds, 4 species of sirenians, 2 species of otters, and the polar bear, besides many species of migratory fish and reptiles. The Aquatic Species Team of the Secretariat is responsible for the coordination of several daughter agreements established under the umbrella of CMS, as well as coordinating the implementation of Decisions, Resolutions, and Concerted Actions from the Conference of the Parties (COP) related to aquatic species. These cover topics such as bycatch, marine noise, marine wildlife tourism, or aquatic wild meat. The Team facilitates the implementation of the mandates for many activities related to aquatic species assigned to the Secretariat the Scientific Council, and prepares the draft Resolutions and Decisions related to aquatic species that will be discussed at the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties in October 2023. Internships with the CMS Secretariat provide a unique opportunity to see how conservation policy works at international level, and allow interns to contribute to the conservation outcomes of the Convention. The internships can start at a mutually agreed date anytime in 2023 and run for 3-6 months. Interns will work from the CMS Secretariat offices in Bonn, Germany or Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Appl. Stat. 18(4): 3071-3090 (December 2024). DOI: 10.1214/24-AOAS1924 Abstract Marine mammals are increasingly vulnerable to human disturbance and climate change. Their diving behavior leads to limited visual access during data collection, making studying the abundance and distribution of marine mammals challenging. In theory, using data from more than one observation modality should lead to better informed predictions of abundance and distribution. With focus on North Atlantic right whales, we consider the fusion of two data sources to inform about their abundance and distribution. The first source is aerial distance sampling, which provides the spatial locations of whales detected in the region. The second source is passive acoustic monitoring (PAM), returning calls received at hydrophones placed on the ocean floor. Due to limited time on the surface and detection limitations arising from sampling effort, aerial distance sampling only provides a partial realization of locations. With PAM we never observe numbers or locations of individuals. To address these challenges, we develop a novel thinned point pattern data fusion. Our approach leads to improved inference regarding abundance and distribution of North Atlantic right whales throughout Cape Cod Bay, Massachusetts in the U.S. We demonstrate performance gains of our approach compared to that from a single source through both simulation and real data. Dolphin Research Internship with MareTerra ERC - Sardinia Island (Italy)

MareTerra ERC is offering internships (https://www.mareterra-erc.org/en/ internship) to join research projects on the conservation of the bottlenose dolphins and marine environment between May and October 2024 in Sardinia Island (Italy), a hotspot of biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea. Since its founding in 2012, MareTerra has operated as a self-financed organization. We are based in Alghero, a charming town with a rich Catalan heritage in the northwest of Sardinia. The Gulf of Alghero is protected by both national and international laws due to its remarkable naturalistic and geological significance. Our location falls within the Site of Community Importance (SCI) of “Bosa, Capo Marargiu and Porto Tangone,” the SCI “Capo Caccia and Punta del Giglio,” and the Marine Protected Area “Capo Caccia and Isola Piana,” which is also designated as a Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance (SPAMI). Interns will receive training in data collection protocols during monitoring activities and learn research methods to monitor the behaviour, habitat use, abundance, and distribution of bottlenose dolphins. Techniques such as photo identification (photo-ID), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Species Distribution Modelling will be utilized. They will gather georeferenced data on dolphins, fishing activities, and boat traffic that impact dolphin behaviour. Additionally, interns will assist in bioacoustic data collection. The goal of our research projects is to implement measures for marine ecosystem conservation and to promote sustainable and responsible management of fishing and tourism activities. Alaska Whale Foundation is looking for interns for the 2025 field season! Overview: Alaska Whale Foundation (AWF) is seeking eight interns to participate in a series of research projects in Sitka, Alaska and at our remote field station on Baranof Island, Southeast Alaska (latitude 57.0877 N, longitude 134.8342 W). Successful applicants will assist in collecting and analyzing data for projects examining humpback and/or gray whale health, foraging ecology, and social biology as well as regional oceanography. ACCOBAMS MMO/PAM certification course in Azores

ACCOBAMS MMO/PAM certificate Course Structure 2025 Course dates May 4- 10 inclusive (7 days) in Ponta Delgada in the Azores. A unique opportunity to experience a range of species visually and acoustically while learning how to recognise and record them. Cost €800 with €200 deposit on acceptance to course and final amount payable by April 4. The modules required to be covered by ACCOBAMS are as follows but emphasis will be on PAM. Who should attend All attendees will be expected to satisfy ACCOBAMS experience requirements of 30 days experience with marine mammals prior to registration for courses and places will be limited. The course is aimed primarily at MMOs (Marine Mammal Observers) who wish to expand their skills to include Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) and QGIS. The ACCOBAMS course is specifically aimed at mitigation in the Mediterranean and Blacks Seas but the principles learned are applicable worldwide. Trainers Training is carried out by Dr Aylin Akkaya and Patrick Lyne (Ch.Mar. Sci. IMarEST). Aylin has been involved in Marine Mammal Research in the Mediterranean area with DMAD and worldwide for approximately two decades. Patrick is certified to carry out JNCC training and has been involved in mitigation in Ireland and worldwide over a similar duration. Certification Training is based on passing all evaluations and is an ACCOBAMS approved certificate course. All those certified are required to sign an agreement to state they will uphold standards and may have certification removed if found to not carry out works appropriately. We will look at collecting data both from a towed array and a drop down hydrophone and evaluate collected data in the classroom afterwards. Evaluation Evaluation covers all the learned skills both on during the theoretical and practical parts of the course, with evaluation and assessment test included as part of the course.

The Sea Otter Program at the Monterey Bay Aquarium is hiring two paid research interns for the March-September 2025 field season. This is a paid, part-time, term position with a six-month commitment of 24 hours each week. Core Responsibilities include but are not limited to, data collection from shore and occasionally on a small boat using radio telemetry equipment and making visual observations with spotting scopes. Will record daily re-sights, movement patterns, forage observations, and activity budget data on marked individual sea otters. Will also assist with sea otter population monitoring and reporting. A research-based project will be required at the end of the internship. New publication on beaked whales and El Niño

Marine Ecology Progress Series 751: 189-209. doi: 10.3354/meps14742 ABSTRACT: Large-scale climatic phenomena, like the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle, influence marine systems across the Pacific and beyond. The effects of these cycles on Hawaiian marine communities, particularly their impact on cetaceans, remains understudied. Using location data obtained from satellite tags deployed on Blainville’s beaked whales *Mesoplodon densirostris* and goose-beaked whales *Ziphius cavirostris*, and sightings data from 2 decades of surveys off the west coast of Hawai‘i Island, we examined the effects of ENSO, season, and 2 other climatic cycles on the space use and sighting rates of these species. Beaked whale sighting rates during El Niño phases were more than double those during La Niña periods, and every period of effort during Central Pacific-‘flavored’ El Niño conditions yielded sightings of both species. Seasonal variation in goose-beaked whale sighting rates was also found. Moreover, both species exhibited variation in space use between climatic phases, with goose-beaked whales displaying a higher propensity to use the windward side of the island after extended La Niña conditions. Shifts in prey availability or predation avoidance in relation to seasons or ENSO events may be the primary drivers behind these findings. More tagging and sighting effort will be necessary to confirm the level of cycle intensity at which these species respond to ENSO cycles, as well as which combinations of climatic phenomena most intensely influence their environment. Our results provide valuable insights for the potential of climate change to influence space use by beaked whales and other odontocetes.
