However, their ecology and behavior remain poorly understood. We investigated site fidelity and social structure of rough-toothed dolphins using photo-identification data collected between 2014 and 2022 in the continental shelf waters of the southwestern coast of Mexico. A total of 133 groups of rough-toothed dolphins were recorded. Mean group size was 4.9 individuals (SD = 4.5), and dolphins were encountered in waters of a mean depth of 110?m (SD = 188). Of 228 individuals identified, 55% were observed once, 39% were seen between two and four times, and 6% were seen five times or more. Site fidelity analysis suggests three levels of site fidelity: transients, occasional visitors, and regular visitors, which are likely to affect the social structure. Through network analysis, nonrandom social patterns were identified (S = 1.25?±?0.26) and dolphins exhibited both preferences and avoidances of social partners. Cluster analysis suggested significant divisions within the population (Q = 0.43?±?0.05). Despite limitations related to sample size and design, this preliminary study suggests that rough-toothed dolphins are best characterized by a fission-fusion society, which is similar to most coastal delphinid populations. Dmitry Tormosov

We are saddened to note the passing of our colleague and friend Dmitry Tormosov, who died on October 15th in Kaliningrad, aged 87. Dmitry was a Russian biologist who worked on Soviet whaling factory ships in the Antarctic during much of the period when the USSR was conducting illegal whaling on a large scale: some 178,000 whales were killed and not reported to the International Whaling Commission (IWC), and the true catch data were classified as secret during this time. Despite orders to destroy the data, Dmitry preserved the entire catch record of one factory ship (the Yuri Dolgorukiy, involving some 72,000 records) by hiding the documents in his potato cellar until after the Cold War. Those data later proved instrumental in correcting the true catch record, which has been essential to the IWC’s assessments of Southern Hemisphere whale populations. Among other things, Dmitry was responsible for revealing that the USSR had killed more than 3,300 southern right whales (many of them off Patagonia), at a time when the general belief was that the population numbered only in the hundreds. Dmitry freely provided his dataset to whoever wanted it, and his data have since been used by other scientists in numerous research projects. Dmitry was a delightful man with a great sense of humor who’ll be much missed for his courage, keen intellect, curiosity and kindness. A full obituary will shortly be submitted to Marine Mammal Science for inclusion in the In Memoriam series there. Fair winds and following seas, my friend. Alexander Abstract: *Environmental DNA (eDNA) is frequently used for detecting species and describing biodiversity through metabarcoding techniques. More recently, there has been emerging evidence that eDNA can be used to investigate intraspecific variability, providing novel pathways to explore population genetics questions. However, it can be difficult to distinguish between true intraspecific variation and PCR/sequence error, and the presence of DNA from multiple individuals makes using traditional frequency-based approaches challenging. Here, we explore how eDNA can be used to investigate population structure of Hector's dolphin (Cephalorhynchus hectori), an endemic, endangered, and culturally important (taonga) species. In doing so, we present a simple and effective method to filter out noise due to PCR/sequence error and show how treating haplotype detections equally can provide similar results to frequency-based approaches from traditional sampling methods. Over the 2022/23 Austral summer, we collected 85 water samples close to Hector's dolphins, and three negative controls, across three areas on the east coast of Aotearoa New Zealand's South Island: Banks Peninsula (n = 41), Timaru (n = 33), and Dunedin (n = 14). We targeted a 348 bp region of the cetacean D-loop in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and obtained positive detections in 68 (77%) water samples, confidently identifying seven haplotypes across the study area. The occurrence of specific haplotypes and the overall frequencies in Banks Peninsula and Timaru matched well with previous tissue-based studies and were similar to other East Coast South Island (ECSI) subpopulations. In Dunedin, however, our results indicate a closer relationship to South Coast populations, suggesting that the membership within the ECSI population be reconsidered, which has implications for how this subpopulation is managed. Request for male harbor seal vocalization samples

Dear MARMAM community, We are looking for recordings of male harbor seals, either from zoos and aquariums, research institutions, or the wild. These can be either in air or underwater recordings, with a preference for in air vocalizations. Online repository data are also very welcome, with the exclusion of Macaulay Library from which we have already obtained data. We would like to use these vocalizations to complement already existing data to calculate vocal parameters in respective seal groups in the course of one of my PhD chapters. This chapter investigates the differences of vocal behavior in several seal groups (under human care trained and untrained vocalizations, as well as wild vocalizations). Any type of vocalization is of interest, as long as it's from male harbor seals over the age of ~ 2 years. Please contact us via diandra.duengen(a)mpi.nl. SMM Workshop: Monitoring the health of pinnipeds

Dear all, We still have a few spots available for our ‘Monitoring the health of pinnipeds – what do carcasses tell us about the health of populations?’ Workshop at the SMM Conference in Perth on Sat November 9th 08:30 – 12:30. This half-day workshop will focus on novel and best practices in pinniped health surveillance, focusing on by-caught, stranded, and hunted individuals. The format will include a series of expert speakers from around the globe (Europe, USA, and Australia), and will be followed by open discussion. We hope that this workshop will provide an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between research veterinarians and pinniped researchers. As top predators, marine mammals are indicators of overall ecosystem health. Moreover, in a changing climate there is an increased need for efficient tools to collect data on marine mammal health parameters. In this proposed workshop, we focus on novel and best practices in pinniped health surveillance, based mainly on by-caught, stranded and/or hunted individuals. The objective of the workshop is to share ongoing and planned activities in pinniped health monitoring, and to provide an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between research veterinarians and pinniped researchers. We intend to invite key experts to share their knowledge on health monitoring of pinnipeds worldwide, with a specific focus on improving accuracy of post-mortem investigations. Through this, we hope to introduce different monitoring approaches, and necropsy and sampling protocols (e.g., Marine Mammal Commission, HELCOM) from varied species and locations. In addition, the workshop will facilitate discussion on the challenges that the participants may face in health monitoring, as well as provide opportunities to share good practices and novel tools used in this field. The workshop activities would include presentations from invited speakers and free discussions. We hope that this workshop will result in improved capacity and updated health monitoring guidelines for pinnipeds. 2025 Marine Mammal Rescue and Rehabilitation Internship Announcement California Wildlife Center is excited to announce internship opportunities for the Winter, Spring and Summer 2025! California Wildlife Center is in Calabasas, California, and responds to reports of stranded marine mammals 365 days a year along the Malibu Coastline. Our pinniped rehabilitation facility is active during the region’s period of highest strandings, which is January through July. Winter Session = Mid-December through Early-February (flexible start & end dates) Spring Session = March 3rd through May 25th Summer Session = May 26th through August 10th Time Commitment: 28-40 hours per week Vaccination Requirement: To be considered, applicants must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19. Summary/Program Description The California Wildlife Center (CWC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured, orphaned, and sick native wildlife. CWC fulfills this mission through marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation, and treatment of avian and terrestrial wildlife in our rehabilitation hospital. This internship will provide an exciting and challenging educational experience in the marine mammal rehabilitation field. Working closely with the Marine Mammal program staff, individuals are exposed to various aspects of pinniped stranding response and rehabilitation, including logistics, assessment, capture, restraint, transportation, husbandry, data collection, and public relations. On-site we provide care for young California sea lions and Northern elephant seal pups. Intern Responsibilities Under supervision of Marine Mammal staff, experiences will include: * Assessing stranded marine mammals on the beach * Assisting or lead responder teams in the capture and handling of stranded marine mammals requiring rescue. * Providing appropriate transport conditions for stranded marine mammals to the rehabilitation facility. * Maintaining detailed records of daily activity reports of stranding, human interaction, and patient health status * Performing daily husbandry tasks for pinniped patients admitted to the rehabilitation facility. * Working closely with Marine Mammal department staff to provide patient-specific rehabilitative care. * Adhering to all safety guidelines set forth by California Wildlife Center and the Marine Mammal Department. * Participating in releases of healthy marine mammal patients back to their Pacific Ocean home. * Maintaining good rapport with representatives of various public agencies, as well as members of the public. * Learning to identify native species of Marine Mammals and Marine Birds and explore their life history. * Assisting with marine mammal necropsy and sample collection. Winter Session will focus on rescue and rehabilitation of California sea lion pups, and facility preparation for the busy season. Spring Session will focus on in-house rehabilitation of Northern elephant seal pups. All species and age classes are rescued during this session, then transported to other rehabilitation centers for continued care. *Spring stranding months are the busiest and most demanding. Summer Session will focus on responding to larger California sea lions and releasing rehabilitated Northern elephant seals. Qualifications This internship is open to all applicants at least 18 years of age or older. Undergraduate students and non-students alike are encouraged to apply. If an intern intends to receive academic credit, they will be responsible for making all arrangements with their educational institutions. Due to the unpredictable nature of marine mammal stranding response, interns must be able and willing to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays. Interns will be required to have good physical strength and the ability to lift/carry 50 lbs. Interns need to have the ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment. Previous marine mammal experience is not required. Housing and transportation are the sole responsibility of the intern. Dear MarMam Community, We are excited to share the following review article—pertaining to sea otter bioenergetics modeling efforts—recently published in Conservation Physiology. *Title: ** Data needs for sea otter bioenergetics modeling* *Authors*: Blaine D. Griffen, Lexanne Klimes, Laura S. Fletcher, Nicole M. Thometz *Abstract*: Sea otters are keystone predators whose recovery and expansion from historical exploitation throughout their range can serve to enhance local biodiversity, promote community stability, and buffer against habitat loss in nearshore marine systems. Bioenergetics models have become a useful tool in conservation and management efforts of marine mammals generally, yet no bioenergetics model exists for sea otters. Previous research provides abundant data that can be used to develop bioenergetics models for this species, yet important data gaps remain. Here we review the available data that could inform a bioenergetics model, and point to specific open questions that could be answered to more fully inform such an effort. These data gaps include quantifying energy intake through foraging by females with different aged pups in different quality habitats, the influence of body size on energy intake through foraging, and determining the level of fat storage that is possible in sea otters of different body sizes.
