Dear MARMAMers, My co-authors and I are pleased to announce our recent publication in Marine Mammal Science: Assessing animal welfare during a stranding of pygmy killer whales (Feresa attenuata). Abstract: Empirical assessment of cetacean welfare to inform stranding interventions is lacking. Here, potential welfare indicators are described for two stranded pygmy killer whales (Feresa attenuata), along with euthanasia procedures and pathology of potential relevance. The animals were filmed for 3.5 and 1.5 hr, respectively, allowing assessment of 19 indicators, including animal behaviors and human interventions. Eight interventions and 19 animal behaviors were identified; 17 and 11 behaviors were displayed by animal 1 and 2, respectively. Examination of ballistics euthanasia revealed atypical projectile placement and characterized animal behavioral responses, but welfare implications could not be assessed as insensibility was not verified in-field. Pulmonary edema and renal degeneration were documented in both animals; differential etiologies include ischemia–reperfusion, shock, and/or myopathy. Potential relationships among histopathology and welfare indicators are explored to infer affective experiences. For example, simultaneous head-lifting with respiration increased over time which, alongside pulmonary edema, suggests these animals experienced breathlessness. Other likely affective states include fatigue and discomfort; there are insufficient data to estimate the intensity or duration of these experiences or to provide an overall welfare grade/score. Further data are required to validate the proposed welfare indicators and to progress development of holistic approaches to welfare assessment at cetacean strandings. New publication on Galapagos Blue whale distribution

Dear colleagues, My co-authors and I are pleased to announce our new publication on Year-round presence of northern and southern hemisphere Blue Whales (Balaenoptera musculus) at the Galapagos Archipelago in the Journal for Cetacean Research and Management. The article can be accessed at: https://journal.iwc.int/index.php/jcrm/article/view/387 Abstract: Information about blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) in the Eastern Tropical Pacific is scarce with only few whales sighted within the last decades. Molecular, photo ID and acoustic studies suggest a connectivity of Chilean and Antarctic blue whales to potential breeding areas off the coast of Peru and in the Galapagos, whereas blue whales of the Costa Rica Dome relate to the Northern Hemisphere population feeding off the coast of California and breeding areas are yet unknown. With opportunistic sighting records in the Galapagos, we document group size and distribution throughout the year during a 17-year period from 2001 to 2018. Sightings slightly increased during the study period with 50% of the whales seen as singletons. Whales were seen year-round but mostly during the Austral winter (82%) and calf sightings occurred from June to September. With 18% of the sightings occurring during the Austral summer, we propose there is geographical overlap between equatorial Galapagos and Northern hemisphere blue whales. One blue whale was identified in the Galapagos in February 2009, resighted in the Costa Rica Dome in January 2014, and sighted again in the Galapagos in May 2016, when whales from the Southern Hemisphere could already be present. The fact that blue whale sightings were recorded throughout the year and the identified individual strongly suggest a non-migratory blue whale population and that in the Galapagos overlapping of both North and Southeast Pacific blue whale populations can occur. New publication: Mercury and cortisol interact to influence endocrine and immune biomarkers in elephant seals

Abstract: Mercury bioaccumulation from deep-ocean prey and the extreme life history strategies of adult female northern elephant seals (*Mirounga angustirostris*) provide a unique system to assess the interactive effects of mercury and stress on animal health by quantifying blood biomarkers in relation to mercury (skeletal muscle and blood mercury) and cortisol concentrations. The thyroid hormone thyroxine (tT4) and the antibody immunoglobulin E (IgE) were associated with mercury and cortisol concentrations interactively, where the magnitude and direction of the association of each biomarker with mercury or cortisol changed depending on the concentration of the other factor. For example, when cortisol concentrations were lowest, tT4 was positively related to muscle mercury, whereas tT4 had a negative relationship with muscle mercury in seals that had the highest cortisol concentrations. Additionally, we observed that two thyroid hormones, triiodothyronine (tT3) and reverse triiodothyronine (rT3), were negatively (tT3) and positively (rT3) associated with mercury concentrations and cortisol in an additive manner. As an example, tT3 concentrations in late breeding seals at the median cortisol concentration decreased by 14% across the range of observed muscle mercury concentrations. We also observed that immunoglobulin M (IgM), the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6 (IL-6), and a reproductive hormone, estradiol, were negatively related to muscle mercury concentrations but were not related to cortisol. Specifically, estradiol concentrations in late molting seals decreased by 50% across the range of muscle mercury concentrations. These results indicate important physiological effects of mercury on free-ranging apex marine predators and interactions between mercury bioaccumulation and extrinsic stressors. Abstract Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (*Sousa chinensis*) inhabiting the Chinese coastline of the northern South China Sea are subject to intense human activity. To investigate potential impacts to dolphins, photographs taken from 2010 to 2021 in five different locations were analyzed. Among individual dolphins (*N* = 1,159), 10.6% presented human-induced injuries. Adults were more frequently injured than young dolphins, and individuals from around Jiangmen, Hainan, and Sanniang Bay presented the highest injury prevalence. More research should be conducted in areas that have been subject to less research, such as Jiangmen and Hainan, and the dolphin watching activities occurring in Sanniang Bay should be monitored and regulated. Forty-seven percent of dolphins presented skin conditions, with orange patches being the most frequent (41.5%). Orange patches and hyper-pigmented pink spots were significantly less prevalent in summer and fall than in winter and spring. Orange patches were less frequent in females than in males, as well as with calves relative to older age classes. Seasonal patterns may be linked to water temperatures, while demographic patterns may be associated with immune defenses. New publication: What the F-POD? Comparing the F-POD and C-POD for monitoring of harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena)

Comparing the F-POD and C-POD for monitoring of harbour porpoise (Phocoena phococena)" in Ecology and Evolution. The link to download the open access article and the abstract can be found below: Abstract: Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) is a cost-effective method for monitoring cetacean populations compared with techniques such as aerial and ship-based surveys. The Cetacean POrpoise Detector (C-POD) has become an integral tool in monitoring programs globally for over a decade, providing standardized metrics of occurrence that can be compared across time and space. However, the phasing out of C-PODs following the development of the new Full waveform capture POD (F-POD) with increased sensitivity, improved train detection, and reduced false-positive rates represents an important methodological change in data collection, particularly when being introduced into existing monitoring programs. Here, we compare the performance of the C-POD with that of its successor, the F-POD, co-deployed in a field setting for 15 months, to monitor harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). While similar temporal trends in detections were found for both devices, the C-POD detected only 58% of the detection-positive minutes (DPM), recorded by the F-POD. Differences in detection rates were not consistent through time making it difficult to apply a correction factor or directly compare results obtained from the two PODs. Generalized additive models (GAMs) were used to test whether these differences in detection rates would have an effect on analyses of temporal patterns and environmental drivers of occurrence. No differences were found in seasonal patterns or the environmental correlates of porpoise occurrence (month, diel period, temperature, environmental noise, and tide). However, the C-POD failed to detect sufficient foraging rates to identify temporal patterns in foraging behavior, which were shown by the F-POD. Our results suggest that the switch to F-PODs will have little effect on determining broad-scale seasonal patterns of occurrence but may improve our understanding of fine-scale behaviors such as foraging. We highlight how care must be taken interpreting F-POD results as indicative of increased occurrence when used in time-series analysis. *Nyangumi Zanzibar - Humpback whales research in Zanzibar/Tanzania* The project focuses on the monitoring of the migrating humpback whales in Tanzania waters, using variety of methods, including systematic small boat surveys with data collection on distribution, behaviour, group cohesion, photo identification and acoustics, in strategically selected areas. The Humpback whale (*Megaptera novaeangliae*) - is a cosmopolitan species which undertake extensive annual migrations, and yearly arriving to Tanzania waters for breeding activities, and are observed around the Archipelago of Zanzibar from July to October. Tanzania is witnessing a remarkable recovery of this charismatic baleen whale after the severe depletion of the population by industrial whaling. Despite being the most studied species globally, there has been very limited research conducted in Tanzania, leaving a considerable data gap, which prevents a conservation status assessment. The current project aims to enhance information on species ecology, population structure, connectivity, abundance estimates, distribution, migration patterns, habitat use and breeding ecology by conducting pertinent research that began in 2018. By participating in the research, you’ll help to bridge a crucial data gap for better understanding of the conservation status of the subpopulation which will assist conservation strategy development in the region. WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR We offer a limited number of volunteering placements for the 2023 season, based in Zanzibar archipelago. Selected volunteers will participate in the small boat surveys around the Island and in Zanzibar Channel where migration is taking place and will assist collecting visual and acoustic data on humpback whales, gaining practical experience and theoretical knowledge from reputable cetacean experts. BSc and MSc thesis development are possible upon request. 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks placements are available from mid-July 2023. REQUIREMENTS -Genuine interest in marine conservation, integrity, self-motivation, maturity and ability to work responsibly; -Physical fitness and mental endurance enabling sustaining long hours out at sea in sometimes challenging conditions; -Ability to cohabit in a dynamic and multicultural environment; -Respect for the project's rules and work ethics, willingness to adhere to the standards and protocols; -Fluency in English (both spoken and written) and good communications skills; -Willingness to learn new software applications and field techniques; -ability to handle equipment responsibly and with due care; -Background in marine biology and previous fieldwork experience are an advantage; FIELD WORK AND RESPONSIBILITIES -Participating in a small boat-based surveys twice a week (subject to suitable weather). -Collecting whales sighting, behavioural, acoustic and photo identification data, alongside environmental and anthropogenic data; -Operating various equipment including cameras, drone, hydrophone (commensurate with skills and experience) and managing respective software programs (Discovery, Pamguard, QGIS etc.); -Data entry and basic analysis; -Cataloguing and matching individuals of target species for photo-ID studies via Discovery software; TRAINING The Nyangumi Zanzibar team provides lectures and field work training as well as constant mentoring. Mar Mam Sci,1–17 https://doi.org/10.1111/mms.13015 Abstract Southern Pacific humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) breed in subtropical and tropical waters off Peru in the south to Nicaragua in the north. The effect of warming oceans on humpback whale distribution in breeding areas remains unclear. We modeled the spatial distribution of humpback whales off the coast of Ecuador in relation to environmental variables. We analyzed the temporal variability in humpback whale sighting rates (animals/hour) in a subtropical (Manabí, 1996–1999) and tropical (Esmeraldas, 2001–2019) breeding ground. At the regional scale, we found humpback whale presence was more likely in shallow waters over the continental shelf. Esmeraldas and Manabí breeding grounds are core wintering habitats with most humpback whale sightings along Ecuador. Within breeding grounds, individual sighting rates varied between and within years and in relation to local sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTa). More animals were sighted in years with cooler waters in the Esmeraldas breeding ground, while the opposite was true in Manabí. The ability to quantify the effects of such threats on individual health and population dynamics is critical for effective management and conservation. We used Stochastic Dynamic Programming (SDP), a method for implementing state-dependent life history theory, to explore the impacts of changes in prey availability and anthropogenic disturbance on survival and reproductive success of Cook Inlet belugas (*Delphinapterus leucas*, CIB), an endangered and isolated population in decline. We predicted behavioral decisions (whether to forage, travel to a new location, or rest) of pregnant CIBs within a spatially and seasonally dynamic prey landscape. We used those decisions to explore time-activity budgets and spatial use under a variety of hypothetical environmental scenarios and estimate the resulting impacts on body condition and vital rates. In all scenarios, foraging activity was highest during summer to capitalize on abundant prey, which in the model was assumed to be eulachon (*Thaleichthys pacificus*) and salmonids ( *Oncorhynchus* spp.). This resulted in large increases in blubber reserves that pregnant CIBs relied on during October to April when prey was assumed to be less abundant. Prey availability outside of summer months was still critical, as it either exacerbated or buffered against reductions in prey availability during summer months. Spatial predictions of habitat use indicated that pregnant CIBs should forage in areas used historically that now appear to be abandoned, suggesting that prey availability alone is unlikely to explain the recent range contraction of CIBs to upper Cook Inlet. Reductions in prey availability from late spring to early fall adversely affected vital rates, but intermittent disturbances that resulted in lost foraging opportunities, such as those caused by anthropogenic activities during the ice-free season, had little impact on body condition or vital rates if prey were abundant during the summer and early fall. Accurate assessment of the effects of anthropogenic disturbance on CIBs requires robust data on both disturbances and year-round prey availability, as intermittent disturbances adversely affected survival and reproductive success when they occurred in environments with reduced prey availability. Our model represents an initial effort to fill a critical information gap for informing CIB management decisions, providing insights into conditions under which reductions in vital rates might be expected and highlighting key data needed to increase the applicability of the model to this endangered population. MMO, PSO & PAM Training Course 2023

Ocean Science Consulting Limited (OSC) is offering its next Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC)-approved Marine Mammal Observer (MMO), Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) Protected Species Observer (PSO), and Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology (IMarEst)-approved Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) training courses. JNCC-certified MMOs comply with UK regulations, and PSOs comply with USA regulations, to minimise the risk of injury and disturbance to marine mammals from various offshore operations. OSC’s MMO course comprises theory and practice, including binocular and range estimation, and role-play sessions. The PAM course comprises theory and practice using PAM equipment in OSC's workshop facilities and/or onboard OSC’s survey vessel (subject to weather). The intention is to run the following course in-person near Edinburgh at OSC’s Dunbar headquarters: 5th to 8th September 2023 Prices are exclusive of VAT, which is charged at the current rate. A discounted package price of £700 is offered for participants who wish to attend all three courses (MMO, PSO, and PAM). Course participants will also receive a discount for purchases of marine binoculars or tripod mounts from Opticron – these should be ordered in advance of the course to ensure availability.
