Endangered Species Research 51:31-58. https://doi.org/10.3354/esr01244 Abstract: As marine traffic increases globally, ship strikes have emerged as a primary threat to many baleen whale populations. Here we predict ship-strike rates for fin whales Balaenoptera physalus and humpback whales Megaptera novaeangliae in the central territorial waters of the Gitga’at First Nation (British Columbia, Canada), which face increases in existing marine traffic as well as new liquified natural gas (LNG) shipping in the next decade. To do so, we utilized Automatic Identification System (AIS) databases, line-transect surveys, shore-based monitoring, whale-borne tags, aerial drone-based focal follows, and iterative simulations. We predict that by 2030, whale encounters will triple for most vessel types, but the change is most extreme for large ships (length >180 m) in prime whale habitat, in which co-occurrences will increase 30-fold. Ship-strike mortalities are projected to increase in the next decade by 2.3x for fin whales and 3.9x for humpback whales, to 2 and 18 deaths yr-1, respectively. These unsustainable losses will likely deplete both species in the coastal region of BC. Models indicate that the largest single source of mortality risk in 2030 will be from the LNG Canada project. Of the mitigation options we evaluated, a 10 knot speed ceiling for all large ships is potentially effective, but the best measure for guaranteed mitigation would be seasonal restrictions on LNG traffic. While certain data gaps remain, particularly with respect to humpback whales, our predictions indicate that shipping trends within Gitga’at waters will impact whale populations at regional levels. Frontiers in Marine Science, 10, 893. https://doi.org/10.3389/fmars.2023.1116829. Introduction: Conservation of cetaceans is challenging due to their large-range, highly-dynamic nature. The EU Habitats Directive (HD) reports 78% of species in ‘unknown’ conservation status, and information on low-density/elusive species such G.griseus, G.melas, Z.cavirostris is the most scattered. Methods: The FLT-Net programme has regularly collected year-round data along trans-border fixed-transects in the Mediterranean Sea since 2007. Nearly 7,500 cetacean sightings were recorded over 500,000 km of effort with 296 of less-common species. Comparing data across two HD 6-years periods (2013-2019/2008-2012), this study aimed at testing four potential indicators to assess range and habitat short-term trends of G.griseus, G.melas, Z.cavirostris: 1) change in Observed Distributional Range-ODR based on known occurrence, calculated through the Kernel smoother within the effort area; 2) change in Ecological Potential Range-EPR extent, predicted through Spatial Distribution Models; 3) Range Pattern, assessed as overlap and shift of core areas between periods; 4) changes in ODR vs EPR. Results: Most ODR and EPR confirmed the persistence of known important sites, especially in the Western-Mediterranean. All species, however, exhibit changes in the distribution extent (contraction or expansion) and an offshore shift, possibly indicating exploitation of new areas or avoidance of more impacted ones. Discussion: Results confirmed that the ODR could underestimate the real occupied range, as referring to the effort area only; it can be used to detect trends providing that the spatio-temporal effort scale is representative of species range. The EPR allows generalising species distribution outside the effort area, defining species’ Habitat and the Occupied/Potential Range proportion. To investigate range-trends, EPR needs to be adjusted based also on the Occupied/Potential Range proportion since it could be larger than the occupied range in presence of limiting factors, or smaller, if anthropogenic pressures force the species outside the ecological niche. Conclusion: Using complementary indicators proved valuable to evaluate the significance of changes. The concurrent analysis of more species with similar ecology was also critical to assess whether the detected changes are species-specific or representative of broader trends. The FLT-Net sampling strategy proved adequate for trend assessment in the Western-Mediterranean and Adriatic basins, while more transects are needed to characterize the Central-Mediterranean and Aegean-Levantine ecological variability. Investigating the Relationship Between Body Shape and Life History Traits in Toothed Whales: Can Body Shape Predict Fast-Slow Life Histories? ABSTRACT: A widespread pattern in vertebrate life-history evolution is for species to evolve towards either fast or slow life histories; however, the underlying causes of this pattern remain unclear. Toothed whales (Odontoceti) are a diverse group with a range of body sizes and life histories, making them an ideal model to investigate potential drivers of this dichotomy. Using ancestral reconstruction, we identified that certain groups of odontocetes evolved more-streamlined, presumably faster, body shapes around the same time that killer whales (Orcinus orca) evolved into whale predators approximately 1 Mya during the Pleistocene. This suggests that the evolution of a streamlined body shape may have been an adaptation to escape killer whale predation, leading to longer life-history events. To test this hypothesis, we performed a cluster analysis of odontocete whales and confirmed the dual pattern of life-history traits, with one group referred to as ‘reproducers’ characterized by early age of maturity, short gestation, short interbirth interval, and short lifespan, and the other group referred to as ‘bet-hedgers’ exhibiting the opposite pattern. However, we found that life history grouping was relatively unrelated to whale shape (i.e., more streamlined or less streamlined). Therefore, we incorporated principal component results into mixed effects models, and the model results indicated that body shape was positively related to neonate length (a measure of investment in progeny), but not significantly related to the temporal life-history traits. Thus, whale body shape is not a sufficient explanation for the evolution of fast-slow life histories in odontocete whales. Please let me know if you'd like a PDF copy. Both positions last one year, one is scheduled to start in October 2023, and the other in April 2024. Previous marine mammal or wildlife experience is a plus. The Sealcentre’s Veterinary Department includes two full time veterinarians and two veterinary interns. We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic candidate who will join our team and will work closely in a team setting with staff and volunteers to assist with all aspects of veterinary care and husbandry of sick and injured seals. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: daily care of animals, transport of live/dead marine animals, maintenance of daily nutritional and medical records, sampling for various research projects, and data entry. Additional duties and projects may be assigned by staff. The interns must be veterinarians or veterinary students. They are required to find their own transportation to Pieterburen and we provide housing (gas, electricity, water, and internet included) and meals. An allowance to cover health insurance costs is provided. These positions are unpaid. The interns should expect to be scheduled to cover a variety of shifts including weekdays, nights, weekends, and holidays. In this episode, we will discuss the results of a recent publication in Environmental Science and Technology <https://pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/acs.est.2c04126> with our special guest and lead author of the study, Kiah Lee. Kiah is a master's student studying toxicology and environmental sciences at the University of Oslo. As part of her undergraduate research at the University of British Columbia, she recently published a paper on contaminants of emerging concern in killer whales, including endangered Southern Residents inhabiting the Northeastern Pacific Ocean (NEP). The team found that per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), alkylphenols, and new persistent organic pollutants, including hexabromocyclododecane (HBCCD), PFOS, PFOA, and PFHxS, were prevalent in these killer whales. They also found efficient and preferential maternal transfer of such chemicals. This research provides preliminary and baseline data on emerging contaminants in NEP sentinel marine mammals. Dear colleagues, The CETUS project is looking for MMOs for this year's fieldwork season onboard TRANSINSULAR cargo ships. This year, routes will be from Mainland Portugal (Porto) to the Azores (Ponta Delgada/Horta/Praia da Vitória) and Madeira (Caniçal). We need observers for the following survey periods: - July 10 - September 25; - August 1 - October 15; - October 1 - November 15. The internship includes: - An intensive training on monitoring protocol and cetacean identification. - Round-trip sea surveys departing from Mainland Portugal along the routes stated above. - Free time to visit Mainland Portugal and the Azores and Madeira Archipelagos. - Accommodation throughout the internship (hostel and onboard). - Living costs while on board (food and insurance). Khmer Ocean Life - Cambodia Internship

*Marine Mammal Research and Conservation Internship – Coastal Cambodia * Khmer Ocean Life is a new NGO in Cambodia, based in the coastal town of Kampot. The organisation focuses on supporting the conservation of coastal cetacean species (Irrawaddy dolphin, Indo-pacific humpback dolphin) and dugongs through research, capacity building and outreach. Khmer Ocean Life was founded by two experienced marine mammal researchers and conservationists, with support from the Royal Government of Cambodia’s Fisheries Administration. Interactive introductory distance sampling training The University of St Andrews has been training ecologists and statisticians in design and analysis of distance sampling studies for decades. Distance sampling methods are widely used in population assessment of many different taxonomic groups. Distance sampling is a method of population assessment widely used in the study of marine mammal populations. We are offering the training workshop in 10 2.5-hour blocks in July 2023. You will be invited to interact in short lectures on distance sampling principles. 👩‍🎓 Exercises analysing data sets in R will reinforce those principles and the lecturer will be available to assist during the practical session via screen sharing.
