Abstract In western South America (WSA) two subspecies of bottlenose dolphin are recognized: Tursiops truncatus gephyreus, predominantly found in estuaries and river mouths, and Tursiops truncatus truncatus, occurring along the continental shelf. Despite a partial spatial overlap, both subspecies are considered to occupy different habitats and ecological niches. In the present study, chemical analyzes as well as biochemical and molecular biomarkers were used to investigate the influence of niche partitioning over metabolic pathways associated with the detoxification of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), antioxidant metabolism, immune activity and lipid metabolism in Tursiops truncatus subspecies living in parapatry. Overall, the profile and levels of bioaccumulated PCBs, pesticides and PBDEs were similar between groups, with a greater variety of pesticides, such as γ-HCHs, heptachlor, oxychlordane and o,p'DDT, detected in T. truncatus gephyreus. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) results indicated that glutathione reductase (GR) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymatic activities were higher in coastal dolphins, as were the mRNA levels of metallothionein 2A (MT2A), interleukin-1α (IL-1α), ceramide synthase 3 (CERS3) and fatty acid elongase (ELOVL4). In parallel, mRNA levels of fatty acid synthase complex 1 (FASN 1) were higher in oceanic dolphins. These findings suggest that, due to their occurrence in coastal habitats, T. truncatus gephyreus is more exposed to environmental pollutants and pathogenic microorganisms. Likewise, niche partitioning may influence lipid biosynthesis, possibly due to differences on feeding habits, reflecting in an enhanced long chain ceramides biosynthesis in T. truncatus gephyreus. Collectively, these data reinforce the need to address habitat specificities in conservation efforts, since distinct groups can be facing different anthropogenic pressures in WSA. DOI: https://doi.org/10.3390/drones7030220 Abstract: Drones have become a crucial research tool across marine environments over the past decade, being specifically useful in marine mammal research. Fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) have been monitored feeding along the Catalan coast, Spain (NW Mediterranean), since 2014. To overcome issues such as the distance between a whale and a research vessel or the lack of distinctive dorsal fin features, an aerial identification technique was developed. It uses the fin whales’ characteristic central chevron pattern (CCP) and blaze, which are clearly visible from an overhead position. A total of 237 individual whales were identified between 2015–2022 in this study area, of which there were 35 interannual recaptures. While the dorsal fin may undergo modifications over time, the CCP and blaze patterns did not naturally alter over the years, with one whale displaying the same characteristics 8 years apart between the first and the most recent sightings. As such, this coloration pattern provides a reliable identification feature to be used for the interannual identification and population monitoring of fin whales using drones. This novel technique aims to improve and unify this species cataloguing overseas by using the CCP and blaze obtained from UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) zenithal videos as a robust identification tool. In this work an aerial photogrammetry protocol using a drone was applied to estimate morphometric measurements and body condition variation in two endangered cetacean species, franciscanas (Pontoporia blainvillei, n = 122) and Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis, n = 41). Sampling occurred in winter and summer in Babitonga Bay, southern Brazil. A 115 cm length object was used to calibrate the scale of measurements at different altitudes. A scale calibration model based on eGSD regression by flight altitude was developed (RMSE = 0.039, r 2 = 0.9902, ΔAICc = 0.00) and used to convert measurements from pixels to centimeters. Five morphometric measurements (body length - BL, widths at anterior pectoral fin - AP, axilla - AX, anterior dorsal fin - AD, and posterior dorsal fin - PD) were taken from each animal to infer body condition, in which, the widths in the anterior portions of the body as % BL, can be an auxiliary tool in the evaluation of variation in the body condition of the small cetaceans studied. The aerial photogrammetry protocol allowed for estimating morphometric measurements and monitoring seasonal changes in the body condition of the small cetaceans. New publication on Southern Hemisphere humpback whales

Greetings MARMAM! I am pleased to announce the publication of our research article titled “Interchange of Southern Hemisphere humpback whales across the South Atlantic Ocean” in Scientific Reports. Sci Rep 13, 4621 (2023). https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-023-31358-5 Abstract The cosmopolitan distribution of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) is largely driven by migrations between winter low-latitude breeding grounds and summer high-latitude feeding grounds. Southern Hemisphere humpback whales faced intensive exploitation during the whaling eras and recently show evidence of population recovery. Gene flow and shared song indicate overlap between the western (A) and eastern (B1, B2) Breeding Stocks in the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans (C1). Here, we investigated photo-identification evidence of population interchange using images of individuals photographed during boat-based tourism and research in Brazil and South Africa from 1989 to 2022. Fluke images were uploaded to Happywhale, a global digital database for marine mammal identification. Six whales were recaptured between countries from 2002 to 2021 with resighting intervals ranging from 0.76 to 12.92 years. Four whales originally photographed off Abrolhos Bank, Brazil were photographed off the Western Cape, South Africa (feeding grounds for B2). Two whales originally photographed off the Western Cape were photographed off Brazil, one traveling to the Eastern Cape in the Southwestern Indian Ocean (a migration corridor for C1) before migrating westward to Brazil. These findings photographically confirm interchange of humpback whales across the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans and the importance of international collaboration to understand population boundaries. PA *Passive Acoustic Monitoring training from April 4th to 9th 2023* (will allow participants to continue to ACCOBAMS certification through DMAD as it will satisfy PAM and boat time requirements) · The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) with assistance from Vanishing Point (VP) is pleased to announce that we will be holding a Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) course from April 4 to 9 inclusive on the Beara Peninsula. Classes will be held on the pier in Castletownbere and practical recording sessions will include a short towed array, a drifting hydrophone and a drop down hydrophone with 20 to 24 hours of boat sessions. The object of the course is to learn to detect and record harbour porpoise Very High Frequency (VHF) species, short-beaked common dolphin High Frequency (HF) species and minke whales Low Frequency (LF) species. Topics will be covered in class and classroom session schedule will change depending on weather to avail of best weather windows for boat sessions. · *The course will cover information pertinent to PAM for the ACCOBAMS MMO and PAM qualification and boat session. Participants can progress to the ACCOBAMS qualification by completing further MMO and mitigation modules in person or online with DMAD provided that sufficient marine mammal experience has been attained (30 days required for the ACCOBAMS course). There will be a further charge for the course with DMAD and it is anticipated this would be €300 for 2 or 2.5 days commitment. * · Accommodation is not included but assistance will be given where required. Topics to be covered will include 1. Introduction to the vocalisations of marine mammals with an emphasis on Ireland. 2. Introduction to anthropogenic noise sources. 3. PAM deployment and setup 4. Setting up a basic PAMguard configuration to monitor for marine mammals. This will include: a) Setting up a spectrogram and Radar display b) Using Whistle and Moan Detector c) Decimator d) Click detector e) Storage options f) Localisation and distance determination 5. PAMguard Viewer Mode and triggered recording will be introduced but extensive use will not be examined at this time. 6. Species identification will look at species recorded on boat surveys and will also look at other commonly seen species and discuss how these may be detected and possibly identified to species or species group level. The Beara area regularly sees aggregations of minke whales in April and low frequency pulse trains associated with these aggregations have been regularly detected in April the last two years, as well as some other vocalisations which while very probably from minke whales have not all been reliably linked to minke whales in the field yet. The minke whales appear to be feeding on sandeels which attract large numbers of common dolphin and harbour porpoise are frequently seen also. While it is difficult to guarantee cetaceans, Risso’s dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and humpback whales may also be present. Every effort will be made to concentrate gathering acoustics on as many different species as possible and it is hoped that one night time to dawn survey will take place. The area currently appears a very good location to detect and listen to minke whale vocalisations at around this time of year and offers a potentially good opportunity to those who wish to become familiar with minke whale vocalisations, which may be useful for informing future baseline work. The course is aimed at those involved in mitigation for industry though may be useful to anyone wishing to identify species typically found in inshore waters of the Irish coast in acoustic recordings. New paper: "Response of harbor porpoises to different types of acoustic harassment devices and subsequent piling during the construction of offshore wind farms"

Dear MARMAM community, my co-authors Armin Rose, Vladislav Kosarev, Raul Vilela, Ilse van Opzeeland, Ansgar Diederichs and I are delighted to announce our latest paper in Frontiers in Marine Science: "Response of harbor porpoises to different types of acoustic harassment devices and subsequent piling during the construction of offshore wind farms" Abstract: Before piling of offshore wind farm foundations, acoustic harassment devices (AHDs) are used to drive harbor porpoises out of the area where they could suffer injuries. Until 2017, a combination of pingers and seal scarer devices (usually SPL = 174-193 dB re 1 μPa (rms) @ 1m at 1 to 20 kHz depending on the device) was prescribed for mitigation purposes in Germany. However, seal scarers led to decreased porpoise detection rates in much larger distances than intended, when 750 m is usually rendered sufficient to avoid injuries. Therefore, devices specifically designed for mitigation purposes were developed and are prescribed since then. These acoustic porpoise deterrents (APDs; e.g. FaunaGuard Porpoise Module; SPL = 172 dB re 1 μPa (rms) @ 1m at 60 to 150 kHz) aim to keep the animals away from offshore construction sites but should not lead to large-scale disturbance as caused by a seal scarer. Although project-specific evaluations indicated that APDs are effective, a cross-project analysis and a comparison with data from previous piling procedures employing seal scarers were still pending. The present study aimed to fill this gap. Between March 2018 and April 2019, harbor porpoise detection rates were monitored acoustically in four offshore wind farm projects using CPODs before, during and after piling at different distances up to 10 km from piling. APD operation led to a significant decrease in detection rates in the vicinity of the device, indicating the displacement of the animals from a small-scale area. Depending on the wind farm, detection rates during APD operation decreased by 30 to 100% at 750 m distance compared to 6 hours before APD operation. Furthermore, reduced detection rates during APD operation were only observed up to about 2.5 km distance even when the APD was switched on for over 40 minutes. Given that the extent of disturbance to harbor porpoises is lower when using an acoustic porpoise deterrent compared to the seal scarer, we consider that preferential use of an acoustic porpoise deterrent is an improvement to mitigation strategies and an important step forward to a less harmful piling procedure. The Northcoast Marine Mammal Center in Crescent City, California, is accepting applications for Summer internships in marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation. Internships are 12-14 weeks. The internships are unpaid but include a $750 stipend, paid in 3 installments. Applicants will live and work in Crescent City. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1111/biom.13828 Abstract: We consider estimator and model choice when estimating abundance from capture–recapture data. Our work is motivated by a mark–recapture distance sampling example, where model and estimator choice led to unexpectedly large disparities in the estimates. To understand these differences, we look at three estimation strategies (maximum likelihood estimation, conditional maximum likelihood estimation, and Bayesian estimation) for both binomial and Poisson Models. We show that assuming the data have a binomial or multinomial distribution introduces implicit and unnoticed assumptions that are not addressed when fitting with maximum likelihood estimation. This can have an important effect in finite samples, particularly if our data arise from multiple populations.We relate these results to those of restricted maximum likelihood in linear mixed effects models. Requirements: - Graduated/current biology or ecology student or have experience demonstrating a commitment to the environment and its conservation - Minimum 30 days at sea as a marine observer (with references/records) - Ability to recognize the different species and understand the behavior of animals at sea - Ability to communicate in English - Have a theoretical understanding of acoustic issues - Ability to recognize the different vocalizations of marine mammals Topics Covered in the Training Course: - Introduction to underwater acoustics - Introduction to marine mammals and acoustics - Introduction to human activities generating underwater noise and impacts on marine mammals - Introduction to existing regulations, mitigation procedures, and ACCOBAMS Guidelines - Introduction to the role of MMO/PAM - Introduction to the lifestyle onboard - Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to map acoustic and visual sightings. - Using PAM for survey and research - Introduction to the hardware used for PAM - Hands-on training with PAMGUARD-Tips and troubleshooting.
