*Whale and dolphin research in southern Tanzania – Mnazi Bay Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park, January 2024* The project focuses on monitoring cetaceans in Tanzanian waters, using a variety of methods, including systematic small boat surveys with data collection on presence/absence, species identification, distribution, behaviour, group cohesion, photo identification and acoustics, in strategically selected areas. The pristine seascape of Mnazi Bay and its surrounding waters, located in Southern Tanzania, holds unparalleled marine wildlife biodiversity, with 10 cetacean species recorded to date (the list will likely expand). At the same time 50,000 people live near the Mnazi Bay Ruvuma Estuary Park, and being a coastal community, they depend on the ocean for their livelihood. Our project embraces scientific data collection and community based environmental education, which once combined, become a backbone of effective conservation. By participating in the research, you’ll help to bridge crucial data gaps for better understanding of the species richness in the area, conservation issues identification and contributing towards conservation strategy development in the region. WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR We offer a limited number of volunteering placements for expedition in January 2024, that will take place in southern Tanzania with the research base in the heart of the Mnazi Bay Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park (MBREMP) – the most biodiverse seascape of the region and a cetacean hotspot. Selected volunteers will participate in the small boat surveys off MBREMP and will assist in collecting visual and acoustic data on cetacean species of this region, gaining practical experience and theoretical knowledge from reputable cetacean experts. Placements are open for the fixed period of 2 weeks starting on 10th January 2024. REQUIREMENTS -Genuine interest in marine conservation, integrity, self-motivation, maturity and ability to work responsibly; -Physical fitness and mental endurance enabling sustaining long hours out at sea in sometimes challenging conditions; -Ability to cohabit in a dynamic and multicultural environment in a remote location; -Respect for the project's rules and work ethics, willingness to adhere to the standards and protocols; -Fluency in English (both spoken and written) and good communications skills; -Willingness to learn new software applications and filed techniques; -Ability to handle equipment responsibly and with due care; -Background in marine biology and previous fieldwork experience are an advantage; FIELD WORK AND RESPONSIBILITIES -Participating in small boat-based surveys daily (total number of surveys is contingent on weather, but +- 10 surveys should be expected). -Collecting cetaceans sighting, behavioural, acoustic and photo identification data, alongside environmental and anthropogenic data; -Operating various equipment including cameras, drone, hydrophone (commensurate with skills and experience) and managing respective software programs (Discovery, PAMGuard, QGIS etc.); -Data entry and basic analysis; -Cataloguing and matching individuals of target species for photo-ID studies via Discovery software; TRAINING The Nyangumi Tanzania team provides lectures and field work training as well as constant mentoring. You will be given the chance to learn the most popular methodologies used in marine mammal research including: -GIS mapping -Photo-identification; -Discovery, Darwin and Logger 2010 software; -Systematic data collection and data analysis; PROJECT CONTRIBUTION The project contribution for the 2-week placement is $1,800. Research Assistant - UAS (To apply, click the link near the bottom of this posting) Integrated Statistics is looking for a Research Assistant to contribute to research focused on utilizing UAS platforms (drones) for monitoring and conservation of large whales, with focus on the North Atlantic right whale. This position supports the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center, and is based within the Whale Ecology Branch. The Research Assistant works in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to collect and analyze data related to body size, health assessment, and behavior of right whales and other species, using drone-based platforms. Data collected by NOAA are used to assist in the management of protected species, evaluate the impacts of various human activities on the species, and aid in education and conservation efforts. The goals of this project are to: 1. Expand the Whale Ecology's research program to include a broad suite of health and behavioral assessment tools for North Atlantic right whales, including photogrammetry, thermal imagery, suction-cup tag deployment, blow sampling, and other new technologies. 2. Develop a database to house UAS-related imagery and metadata from multiple sources. 3. Contribute to the development of standardized image analysis protocols for measuring right whale body size under a variety of conditions. *Duties* * Participate in boat-based data collection on large whales using handheld unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). Field research will take the form of daily surveys launched from shore, as well as multi-week shipboard surveys. Data collection may also include the deployment of suction-cup tags from drones, depending on the candidate’s experience. * Manage survey and imagery data. Data processing duties will include QA/QC of sightings and effort data, and UAS-related imagery and metadata. Data processing will also include accurate and timely completion of summary spreadsheets and survey reports, and maintenance of data processing programs and databases. * Conduct comprehensive analysis of UAS imagery data to evaluate individual whale size, growth rates, body condition, and/or health status. * Collaborate with team members to integrate results from UAS analyses with other data types, including collaborating with regional and international partners on new applications for UAS data. * Assist with the development of databases for efficient management of UAS-related data. * Assist with coordination of a workshop geared at standardizing photogrammetry measurement protocols for right whales. * Support management. Duties may include analyzing data and preparing presentations for stakeholder meetings, communicating with the wider community of remote sensing researchers in the Northeast and Canada, and contributing to discussions related to protected species health assessment needs. * Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences and workshops. *Qualifications, Experience, and Strengths* * Master’s or higher degree in Marine Biology, Ecology, Data Science, Robotics, or related field is required. * Expert-level proficiency with the operation of drones. Snapshots in time: quantifying dynamics of coastal vessel traffic in a dolphin hotspot. *New Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research*, 1-24. https://doi.org/10.1080/00288330.2023.2261872 Small vessels contribute substantially to coastal soundscapes, presenting myriad potential impacts on marine species and ecosystems, yet are challenging to monitor using standard tracking methods (e.g. AIS). Here, we present an automated camera system developed to quantify coastal vessel traffic in a core habitat for Hector’s dolphins (*Cephalorhynchus hectori*) within Akaroa Harbour, Aotearoa New Zealand. Analysis of 55,569 images taken during the austral summer of 2019/20 showed that traffic was highest around midday, on weekends, and in January. A mean of 41.9 vessel trips per day transited the area of core habitat. Vessel speeds estimated from photographs were assigned to 5-knot bins with 84% accuracy. Findings suggest vessel traffic in Akaroa Harbour has approximately doubled between 2006–2008 and 2020. Additionally, tours focused specifically on dolphins composed a significantly larger proportion of vessel traffic in 2020 than observed during 2006–2008. We validate the use of an automated camera system as a robust, novel, repeatable, and cost-effective tool for quantifying fluctuations in coastal vessel traffic. New publication: Population structure of Kogia from the Southern Hemisphere

Dear MARMAM community, On behalf of my co-authors, I am pleased to share with you our new publication in *Advances in Marine Biology*: Stephanie Plön, Peter B. Best, Pádraig Duignan, Shane D. Lavery, Ric T.F. Bernard, Koen Van Waerebeek, and C. Scott Baker (2023). Population structure of pygmy (*Kogia breviceps*) and dwarf (*Kogia sima*) sperm whales in the Southern Hemisphere may reflect foraging ecology and dispersal patterns. Advances in Marine Biology 96, 85-114. Abstract Little is known about the biology of pygmy (*Kogia breviceps*) and dwarf (*K. sima*) sperm whales as these animals are difficult to observe in the wild. However, both species strand frequently along the South African, Australian and New Zealand coastlines, providing samples for these otherwise inaccessible species. The use of DNA samples from tissue and DNA extracted from historical material, such as teeth and bone, allowed a first analysis of the population structure of both species in the Southern Hemisphere. A 279 base pair consensus region of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene was sequenced for 96 K. breviceps (53 tissue and 43 teeth or bone samples) and 29 *K. sima* (3 tissue and 26 teeth or bone samples), and 26 and 12 unique haplotypes were identified, respectively. *K. breviceps* showed a higher nucleotide diversity of 0.82% compared to 0.40% in K. sima. Significant genetic differentiation was detected in the Southern Hemisphere between K. breviceps from South Africa and New Zealand (ФST = 0.042, p < 0.05). Mitochondrial control region sequences (505 bp) were available for 44 individuals (41 *K. breviceps* and 3 *K. sima*) for comparative purposes. A comprehensive global phylogenetic analysis (maternal lineage) of our sequences together with all available *Kogia* mtDNA sequences largely supported previously published phylogenetic findings, but highlighted some changed inferences about oceanic divergences within both species. The higher nucleotide diversity and low population differentiation observed in *K. breviceps* may result from its broad foraging ecology and wide distribution, which may indicate a more opportunistic feeding behaviour and tolerance towards a larger range of water temperatures than *K. sima*. In Belize, Antillean manatees (*Trichechus manatus manatus*) commonly inhabit small depressions in the substrate or deep-water coves known as “resting holes”. Determining if manatees exhibit diel temporal trends in their call production rate and call types between microhabitats can provide insights into their diurnal and nocturnal activity patterns. Here, we investigate the diel vocalization patterns of wild Antillean manatees in two adjacent resting holes off of St. George’s Caye, Belize. Recordings of manatees were made using a bottom-mounted hydrophone located near a reef barrier reef for nine days in July of 2017 and ten days in January of 2018. To explore if and how manatee acoustic activity differs between sites, we compared the number of calls per hour, the number of manatee positive hours, the number of tonal and atonal sounds, and the number of boats detected across sites. A total of 370 hours of acoustic recordings were analyzed resulting in the detection of 3,262 calls. There were no significant differences in the number of manatee calls produced per hour between sites. The average number of calls produced by manatees decreased over the course of several days. The proportion of tonal calls decreased with hours after sunset and increased in boat presence. These results suggest manatees in this region may exhibit different diel activity patterns which appear to be influenced by the characteristics of the environment. These findings can support ongoing conservation and management efforts to safeguard species in Belize.
