Osteological reference for whales

Dear all, I hope this email finds you well. I am trying to create an osteological reference for cetaceans (fow now I am focusing on the large whales of the North Atlantic). I have visited numerous natural history museums already and have taken thousands of photos and edited most of them as well. I almost have a full overview of all the large whales in the North Atlantic, but I'm still missing some photos of certain views for some skeletal elements for some taxa. It's often hard to take all the photos as the bones are sometimes too big to move by myself or are not present in collections. I was hoping that some of you might have access to some of the skeletal elements I am missing and would be willing to take photos. I have attached a list of the remaining photos I need. No need to take any of them of course, but if you happen to have some of these bones easily accessible, it would already help me a lot if you could take one photo (preferably with scale bar). New publication: porpoise responses to a seal scarer in the wild

Scientific Reports, 13:16691. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-023-43453-8 In this paper we present the responses of six tagged porpoises exposed to a seal scarer (acoustic harassment device) in the wild. The porpoises respond to the exposure from up to 7 km away by startling, fleeing, altering echolocation behaviour as well as tachycardia. We conclude that in order to minimize habitat degradation and disproportionate adverse effects on porpoises, the source level of seal scarers should be reduced when used for mitigating offshore construction noise effects on porpoise hearing. Publication on cetacean exposure to underwater noise

(2023) https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ecss.2023.108510 ABSTRACT Cetacean exposure to underwater noise in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean is largely unknown. With the goal to characterize sound pressure and sound exposure levels in different environments, we have employed data from one month of passive acoustic monitoring in a coastal and an oceanic location to register sound pressure level variations and to calculate sound exposure levels to which cetacean species are subjected. Noise profiles varied between locations; Rio de Janeiro coastal area had higher levels than the Vitoria-Trindade Seamount Chain area. At both sites, low-frequency hearing cetaceans were the group under higher exposure during day and night. For high-frequency and very high-frequency groups, the day period presented higher levels. Results highlight the conditions of these unexplored soundscapes and the necessity for taking underwater noise into consideration for space-time regulation of marine areas in cetacean conservation efforts. Dear MARMAM community, My co-authors and I are pleased to share our most recent publication titled: New insights into the pathogenesis and transmission of *Brucella pinnipedialis*: systemic infection in two bottlenose dolphins (*Tursiops truncatus**)*. You will find the open access publication at the *link*: https://doi.org/10.1128/spectrum.01997-23 *Abstract: *The emergence of *Brucella* infections in marine mammals is a growing concern. The present study reports two cases of systemic *Brucella pinnipedialis* infection detected in bottlenose dolphins (*Tursiops truncatus*) pair stranded together in the Cantabrian coast of Spain. Both animals showed systemic lesions associated with the *Brucella* infection, more severe in the younger dolphin, considered the likely offspring of the other individual. Real-time PCR, bacterial culture, and whole-genome sequencing were used to detect and characterize the *Brucella* strains involved in both dolphins. The phylogenetic analysis performed on the *Brucella* genomes retrieved revealed that the species involved was *B. pinnipedialis* (ST25). Both animals resulted seropositive in a commercial multispecies blocking ELISA but tested negative in the standard Rose Bengal test. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a systemic infection resulting in various lesions associated with *Brucella pinnipedialis* (ST25) in two bottlenose dolphins. It is also the initial isolation of *Brucella* in the milk of a non-pregnant or non-aborting female cetacean likely stranded with its offspring. These findings provide new insights into the epidemiology and clinical impact of *B. pinnipedialis* infection in cetaceans and underscore the importance of continued diagnostic surveillance to gain better understanding of brucellosis effects and transmission in marine mammal populations. *Importance: **Brucella* spp. are zoonotic pathogens that can affect both terrestrial and marine mammals. *Brucella ceti* has been identified in various cetacean species, but only one sequence type (ST27) has been reported in humans. However, it is important to conduct surveillance studies to better understand the impact of marine *Brucella* species on marine mammals, a typically understudied host group. Here, we describe a systemic infection by two related strains of *Brucella pinnipedialis* (ST25) in a couple of live-stranded bottlenose dolphins, with more severe lesions in the younger animal. New paper: Humpback whale Albino in Tahiti

Dear MARMAM community, I am pleased to share my recent publication in the Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom : A new record of a white humpback whale (*Megaptera novaeangliae*) in Papeete, Tahiti. Abstract. A new record of a white humpback whale (*Megaptera novaeangliae*) was made off Papeete, Tahiti in July 2019. The individual was completely white, except for grey patterns on its body and on the ventral part of the fluke. The presence of different colourations indicates that this individual is not an albino but a leucistic individual. According to field observations, the individual was likely a juvenile or a subadult. It was seen breaching several times and travelled further north of Papeete, where the animal was recaptured off Arue. White individuals are rare and offer unique opportunities to understand whale movement patterns and potential population connectivity among humpback whale populations. New Publication: Reproductive biology of male common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) in New Zealand waters

Kia Ora MARMAMers, My co-authors and I are pleased to announce our recent publication of an international collaboration involving Massey University, Atlantic Technological University, Department of Conservation (DOC) and our iwi partners to offer first insights to the reproduction of male common dolphins in New Zealand waters. Marine Biology 170, 153. https://doi.org/10.1007/s00227-023-04266-5 Abstract: Reproductive parameters were assessed in 64 male common dolphins (*Delphinus delphis*) examined post-mortem from strandings and bycatch in New Zealand between 1999 and 2020. The stages of male sexual maturation were assessed using morphological measurements and histological examination of testicular tissue. Age was determined via growth layer groups (GLGs) in teeth. The average age (ASM) and length (LSM) at attainment of sexual maturity were estimated to be 8.8 years and 198.3 cm, respectively. Individual variation in ASM (7.5–10 years) and LSM (190–220 cm) was observed in New Zealand common dolphins. However, on average, sexual maturity was attained at a similar length but at a marginally younger age (< 1 year) in New Zealand compared to populations in the Northern Hemisphere. All testicular variables proved better predictors of sexual maturity compared to demographic variables (age and total body length), with combined testes weight the best outright predictor of sexual maturity. Reproductive seasonality was observed in male common dolphins, with a significant increase in combined testes weight in austral summer. This aligns with most other studied populations, where seasonality in reproduction is typically observed. Given the known anthropogenic impacts on New Zealand common dolphins, we recommend that these findings be used as a baseline from which to monitor population-level changes as part of conservation management efforts. The mixed-species society of its dolphins is world-wide unique in many ways. Since 1995 the Pelagos Cetacean Research Institute has been conducting surveys to study these dolphins and made fantastic discoveries. The Gulf of Corinth is the only place in the world, where striped dolphins live in a semi-enclosed gulf, isolated from larger seas or oceans! Together with common dolphins and Risso's dolphins, they form a permanent mixed-species dolphin society. Such a permanent symbiosis has never been observed anywhere else in the world. Given the genetic distances among the three species, it is like if humans lived in a mixed-species society with chimpanzees and gorillas! During a recent survey in 2023 new amazing observations were made: 1) We re-sighted the same individual of Risso's dolphin 26 years after its first observation in 1997, 2) We recorded a unique striped dolphin with thumbs on both its pectoral fins, 3) A female common dolphin had adopted or kidnapped a striped dolphin newborn and was lactating it. The Gulf of Corinth is an IMMA (Important Marine Mammal Area at the global scale) and a Natura2000 area. Nevertheless, no conservation measures have been taken so far and such an isolated dolphin society is very fragile to environmental changes and human activities. New publication: Humpback whale distribution - telemetry & line transects

Marine Ecology Progress Series, 720:161-174. https://doi.org/10.3354/meps14404 ABSTRACT: Statistical modelling of animal distributions has been widely applied to explain how mobile species use their habitats. The distribution of and habitat use by humpback whales Megaptera novaeangliae off the eastern coast of Brazil have previously been investigated by modelling visual survey data. Here, we modelled distribution in their breeding range using individual tracking data to compare ecological inferences with those from previous models from line transect data. A generalised estimating equation framework was used to model the tracking data and pseudo-absences as functions of spatial covariates. Covariates considered were latitude and longitude, sea surface temperature (SST), current and wind speeds near the surface, distances to shelf-break and the coast, sea bottom depth and slope, and a factor variable representing ‘shelter’. Two modelling exercises were developed: a habitat use model (HUM) and a distribution model (DIM). Covariates retained in the selected HUM were SST, distance to coast and shelf-break, current and wind speeds and shelter. Covariates retained in the selected DIM were latitude/longitude, current speed and distances to shelf-break and coast. The modelled relationships between whale occurrence and environmental covariates using tracking data were similar to those using line transect data. Distribution maps were also similar, supporting higher densities around the Abrolhos Archipelago and to its south. We showed that habitat use and distribution of this population in the area could be similarly inferred by modelling either line transect or tracking data. IFAW Marine Mammal Cetacean Intensive Care Unit (CICU) Internship - Winter/Spring 2024

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is currently accepting applications for winter/spring 2024 Marine Mammal Cetacean Intensive Care Unit Internships. Winter/Spring Session 2024 (Middle of January, 2024 - Last Week of May, 2024) Complete Applications due: October 15th, 2023 Program Background IFAW is an international non-profit organization. This internship is based out of our International Operations Center in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, USA. IFAW's Marine Mammal Rescue and Research (MMRR) program is a federally authorized program dedicated to marine mammal stranding response on Cape Cod and southeastern Massachusetts. Our program strives to promote the conservation of marine mammal species and their habitat by improving the rescue and humane care of stranded marine mammals, advancing stranding science, and increasing public awareness through education. Cape Cod is a marine mammal stranding "hot spot," with an average of over 264 strandings occurring each year. These strandings include live and dead seals, whales, porpoises, and dolphins. In addition to stranding response, IFAW's MMRR division is introducing the Cetacean Intensive Care Unit (CICU) located at the Dolphin Rescue Center in Orleans, MA. CICU is a short-term rehabilitation facility that aims to provide supportive care to dolphins and porpoises experiencing acute effects of stranding. CICU Intern Duties * Animal care: Provide in-water support to small cetaceans including dolphins and porpoises, monitor animal behavior, assist staff during diagnostic procedures and veterinarian prescribed treatment regimes. Please note experiences will be opportunistic as cases arise. We do not have a long-term rehabilitation program or animals on site regularly. * CICU readiness: cleaning, organizing, and maintaining the Cetacean ICU including pools, related equipment and gear, restocking kits and supplies. * CICU education and outreach: act as a docent at CICU to provide general public with information relating to the Cetacean ICU and IFAW's marine mammal stranding response program, assist staff with training volunteers and other network members, participate in community events. * Data collection and sample processing: assist with collection of data and samples relating to CICU patients, organize and archive animal records and samples. * Marine mammal stranding response and necropsy: assist stranding response program opportunistically with aspects of marine mammal stranding response, help maintain stranding response and necropsy readiness.
