Briefly, we show quantitative evidence that identity codas function as symbolic markers of cultural identity among seven Pacific Ocean sperm whale clans. We also characterize the distribution of clans in the Pacific and highlight similarities with human ethnolinguistic groups. A key gap between these two types of culture is quantitative evidence of symbolic markers—seemingly arbitrary traits that function as reliable indicators of cultural group membership to conspecifics. Using acoustic data collected from 23 Pacific Ocean locations, we provide quantitative evidence that certain sperm whale acoustic signals exhibit spatial patterns consistent with a symbolic marker function. Culture segments sperm whale populations into behaviorally distinct clans, which are defined based on dialects of stereotyped click patterns (codas). We classified 23,429 codas into types using contaminated mixture models and hierarchically clustered coda repertoires into seven clans based on similarities in coda usage; then we evaluated whether coda usage varied with geographic distance within clans or with spatial overlap between clans. Similarities in within-clan usage of both “identity codas” (coda types diagnostic of clan identity) and “nonidentity codas” (coda types used by multiple clans) decrease as space between repertoire recording locations increases. However, between-clan similarity in identity, but not nonidentity, coda usage decreases as clan spatial overlap increases. This matches expectations if sympatry is related to a measurable pressure to diversify to make cultural divisions sharper, thereby providing evidence that identity codas function as symbolic markers of clan identity. Our study provides quantitative evidence of arbitrary traits, resembling human ethnic markers, conveying cultural identity outside of humans, and highlights remarkable similarities in the distributions of human ethnolinguistic groups and sperm whale clans. Functional Ecology. https://doi.org/10.1111/1365-2435.14172 Abstract Diel cycles in marine predator diving behaviour centre around the light-mediated diel vertical migration (DVM) of prey, and are considered critical for optimizing foraging and limiting competition across global seascapes. Yet, our understanding of predator diel behaviour is based primarily on examining relative depth usage between constant day/night cycles with no formal investigation of how varying light regimes interact with abiotic factors to shape diel activity. The extreme seasonal light regimes (midnight sun, polar night, day/night cycle) in the Arctic provide a unique natural experimental setting to empirically investigate the occurrence and intensity of diel behaviour in marine predators relative to changing light levels while concomitantly assessing interacting abiotic factors. Depth time series data from satellite-linked tags deployed on six beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) for up to 12 months were used to quantify diel behaviour by calculating dissimilarity in time-at-depth between periods of low and high solar altitude on each day. Generalized additive mixed effects models were used to examine the influence of hours of daylight across extreme light cycles, coupled with bathymetry and sea ice concentration; focal diel patterns were further examined relative to the thermal structure of the water column. As predicted, belugas exhibited cathemerality during the midnight sun, and initiated diel behaviour with the onset of the fall day/night cycle, with a marked increase in its intensity with the progression to equal day/night length. Occurrence of diel patterns, however, was complex; ceasing in regions with seafloor depths <700 m, and occurring with greatest intensity when the water column was thermally homogeneous within the upper 150 m. Through empirical investigation, this study demonstrates that the onset of day/night light cycles and presumably associated prey DVM can modulate predator diel dive behaviour under certain circumstances, but highlights how the complex interaction of abiotic factors with light regime shape dynamic spatiotemporal patterns. These findings, building on a body of recent work, emphasize that the traditional view of the ubiquitous occurrence of diel behaviour tied to DVM at the base of the food web oversimplifies vertical predator–prey interactions, identifying the need for more structured investigation. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is currently accepting applications for a Stranding Apprentice with the Marine Mammal Rescue and Research team. Background: IFAW is an international non-profit organization with its International Operations Center located in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, USA. IFAW’s Marine Mammal Rescue and Research Program is a federally-authorized response program dedicated to marine mammal stranding response on Cape Cod and southeastern Massachusetts. Our mission is to promote the conservation of marine mammal species and their habitat by improving the rescue and humane care of stranded marine mammals, advancing stranding science, and increasing public awareness through education. This area averages about 260 strandings per year of live and dead seals, whales, porpoises and dolphins, and is a known “hot spot” for live dolphin mass strandings. Position Description: This position is a temporary (12 month) paid internship with IFAW’s Marine Mammal Rescue & Research Program located at IFAW’s International Operations Center in Yarmouth Port, MA. This position is designed to afford candidates new to the marine mammal field, the opportunity to work full-time alongside experienced marine mammal stranding responders. The apprentice will train directly with IFAW’s marine mammal rescue staff and veterinarians and will likely also have opportunities to network and learn from other marine mammal professionals who collaborate with IFAW. Through practical experience, the apprentice will develop skills and knowledge in marine mammal rescue, health assessment, supportive and clinical care, necropsy, data and sample collection and management, and other related responsibilities. The Stranding Apprentice will report directly to the Assistant Coordinator - Necropsy, but will also take direction from other staff who will provide guidance and oversight on day-to-day responses, tasks, and projects as needed. Schedule: The apprentice is scheduled 5 days per week for 8 hours each day (40 scheduled hours per week). This will include at least one weekend day per week and some scheduled holidays. Additional hours may be required, and overtime pay will be provided. The proposed dates for this position are November 2022 - November 2023. Pay Rate and Benefits: Regular pay rate is $18/hour. Health insurance is offered after 3 months of employment. This position is eligible for paid holidays, workers’ compensation, and paid sick leave, as accrued. New publication: Bruck and Pack, 2022 Understanding across the senses: cross-modal studies of cognition in cetaceans

Adam and I are excited to announce a new publication to highlight the past and future of cross-modal research in cetacean cognition. Cross-modal studies are a powerful tool for elucidating sensory and cognitive questions in non-verbal animals including cetaceans. Here we highlight how these studies have informed our understanding of echolocation, cetacean understanding of transitivity as well as the representational nature of signature whistles. *Title: * Understanding across the senses: cross-modal studies of cognition in cetaceans. *Authors:* Jason N. Bruck and Adam A. Pack *Abstract* Cross-modal approaches to the study of sensory perception, social recognition, cognition, and mental representation have proved fruitful in humans as well as in a variety of other species including toothed whales in revealing equivalencies that suggest that different sensory stimuli associated with objects or individuals may effectively evoke mental representations that are, respectively, object based or individual based. Building on established findings of structural equivalence in the form of spontaneous recognition of complex shapes across the modalities of echolocation and vision and behavior favoring identity echoic–visual cross-modal relationships over associative echoic–visual cross-modal relationships, examinations of transitive inference equivalencies from initially learned associations of visual and acoustic stimuli, and recent work examining spontaneous cross-modal social recognition of individual identity across acoustic and gustatory chemical modalities (i.e., the equivalence relationships among an individual’s characteristics), we examine the history, utility and implications for cross-modal research in cetacean cognition. Drawing from research findings on bottlenose dolphins and beluga whales as well as other species we suggest future directions for cetacean cross-modal research to further illuminate understanding how structural and individual sensory equivalencies lead to object-centered and individual-centered mental representations, as well as to explore the potential for practical applications related to cetacean conservation. New Publication: Nicholson et al. (2022) Demographics and viability of an estuarine community of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins

Dear Colleagues, I and my co-authors are excited to announce a new open access publication that forms the third part of a dolphin population assessment in the Peel-Harvey Estuary in Western Australia. What is particularly neat about this study is that we were able to obtain census level data for the community of dolphins with all individuals' sex and approximate age being known. *Title: *Demographics and viability of an estuarine community of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins *Authors:* Krista Nicholson, Martin van Aswegen, Neil Loneragan and Lars Bejder *Abstract* Wildlife management requires reliable demographic information to assess the status of a population and its vulnerability to threats. This study calculated age class- and sex-specific demographic parameters and assessed the viability of a community of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) resident to the Peel-Harvey Estuary in Western Australia. Boat-based photo-identification surveys (n = 483) were conducted between 2016 and 2019. A population viability analysis (PVA) was used to assess the community status and evaluate the effects of adult female and calf mortality, and reproduction on population growth rate. The community comprised 88 (SD = 4.43) individuals with a sex ratio close to parity in all but the adult age class where it was skewed towards females. Demographic changes in this community are driven by births, deaths, and the likely permanent emigration of juvenile males. No immigration was observed. The population is stable (r = -0.004, SD = 0.062) given the current demographic rates. To maintain a community of ~90 individuals, management should consider action to lower adult female and calf mortality. This should involve aiming for zero human caused mortality and ensuring adverse impacts to the population are considered in future development planning. Stranding Intern Duties * Stranding hotline coverage: answer calls, document reports, educate callers, dispatch volunteers, complete associated paperwork and enter data. * Marine mammal stranding response and necropsy: assist staff with all aspects of marine mammal stranding response, including live animal health assessment and supportive care, biological data collection, post-mortem examinations and sampling in both field and laboratory settings. * Stranding / necropsy readiness: cleaning, organizing and maintaining stranding response and necropsy gear, equipment and facilities, restocking kits and supplies. * Data entry / sample processing: assist in entry of stranding data. Assist in organizing, cataloging, disseminating and archiving of photos, videos, datasheets, samples, etc. * Outreach: assist staff with training and outreach material preparation and organization, participate in opportunistic outreach at stranding sites, participate in community events.
