JOB OPPORTUNITY WITH MARINE ANIMAL RESCUE SPECIALISTS Marine Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization providing rescue response as far north as the Pacific Palisades, south to Long Beach, and as far west as Catalina Island. MAR conducts hundreds of marine mammal rescues annually. Rescued animals consist primarily of sea lions, seals, and seabirds with occasional dolphins and sea turtles. MAR has rescued 6,000 marine mammals over the past 30 years. MAR also works as a member of the large whale disentanglement network. You must have pinniped rescue experience to apply for this position POSITION: MARINE ANIMAL RESCUE SPECIALIST MAR is looking for committed individuals who would like to make rescuing marine animals a career. You must have pinniped, especially sea lion rescue experience to apply. Training will be provided by MAR to ensure continued high-level response to any marine animal calls. Best Regards, John Baker, Ph.D. Research Program Director Institute for Marine Mammal Studies Bottlenose Dolphin Photo-ID Program Fall Internship Institute for Marine Mammal Studies (IMMS) Gulfport, Mississippi Job Description IMMS' Research Internship Program is designed to provide exceptional research and learning experiences in a real-world setting to early career scientists in the fields of marine biology and ecology, marine mammal population ecology and behavior, veterinary sciences and conservation. In this position, interns will primarily assist the institute's Bottlenose Dolphin Photo-ID Program in collecting and processing photographs of bottlenose dolphins in the Mississippi Sound. Other research efforts may include conducting literature reviews, collecting and managing fisheries, habitat and environmental data, and investigating ecological factors and relationships. Interns will also gain diverse experience working in other program areas including marine mammal and sea turtle stranding response, sea turtle surveys, veterinary research, aquaria maintenance and animal care (bottlenose dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, rays, starfish, birds, reptiles, etc.), and marine education and conservation. As part of a research team, primary duties include: Conduct boat-based bottlenose dolphin photo-ID surveys up to 7 days per month in estuarine and nearshore marine Gulf Coast waters. Internship Research Projects and Presentations As part of the research internship, interns will be assigned an independent research project. Assigned research project topics will vary depending on the current needs of IMMS' Research Department. Interns will be given time at work to work on their research projects. Interns are also expected to conduct at least 3 hours per week of research outside of work. Interns will present the findings or their research with a 15 to 20-minute PowerPoint presentation in the last week of their internship. Internship Requirements Applicants must be 18 years or older. New publication: Spatial Distribution and Encounter Rates of Delphinids and Deep Diving Cetaceans in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea of Turkey and the Extent of Overlap With Areas of Dense Marine Traffic

Frontiers in Marine Science, *9:860242*. https://doi.org/10.3389/fmars.2022.860242 Abstract: Marine traffic has been identified as a serious threat to Mediterranean cetaceans with few mitigation strategies in place. With only limited research effort within the Eastern Basin, neither baseline species knowledge nor the magnitude of threats have been comprehensively assessed. Delineating the extent of overlap between marine traffic and cetaceans provides decision makers with important information to facilitate management. The current study employed the first seasonal boat surveys within the Eastern Mediterranean Sea of Turkey, incorporating visual and acoustic survey techniques between 2018 and 2020 to understand the spatial distribution of cetacean species. Additionally, marine traffic density data were retrieved to assess the overlap with marine traffic. Encounter rates of cetaceans and marine traffic density were recorded for each 100 km<sup>2</sup> cell within a grid. Subsequently, encounter and marine traffic density data were used to create a potential risk index to establish where the potential for marine traffic and cetacean overlap was high. Overall, eight surveys were undertaken with a survey coverage of 21,899 km<sup>2</sup> between the Rhodes and Antalya Basins. Deep diving cetaceans (sperm and beaked whales) were detected on 28 occasions, with 166 encounters of delphinids of which bottlenose, striped and common dolphins were visually confirmed. Spatially, delphinids were distributed throughout the survey area but encounter rates for both deep diving cetaceans and delphinids were highest between the Rhodes and Finike Basins. While sperm whales were generally detected around the 1000m contour, delphinids were encountered at varying depths. Overall, two years of monthly marine traffic density were retrieved with an average density of 0.37 hours of monthly vessel activity per square kilometer during the study period. The mean density of vessels was 0.32 and 1.03 hours of monthly vessel activity per square kilometer in non-coastal and coastal waters respectively. The Eastern Mediterranean Sea has several important shipping lanes within the study area. Two priority areas for deep diving cetacean and a large priority area for cetaceans were identified in the waters between Marmaris and Finike where high cetacean encounters and dense marine traffic overlapped. The current study revealed important habitats for cetaceans within the data deficient Eastern Mediterranean Sea and delineated potential risk area where marine traffic should be limited. Interactive introductory distance sampling training The University of St Andrews has been training ecologists and statisticians in design and analysis of distance sampling studies for decades. Distance sampling methods are widely used in population assessment of pinniped and cetacean populations. In case you have been having a busy summer (perhaps conducting a distance sampling survey) and registering had slipped your mind, now would be a good time to book your place in the upcoming workshop. We are offering the training workshop in 10 2.5-hour blocks in August/September 2022. You will be invited to interact in short lectures on distance sampling principles. Exercises analysing data sets in R will reinforce those principles and the lecturer will be available to assist during the practical session via screen sharing. The session will conclude with a summary of the exercise and question/answer session for both lecture and exercise. You can participate in polls during the workshop to assess your comprehension of topics discussed. In addition to questions at any time during the lectures and practicals, an optional additional half hour will be set aside each session for discussion of topics arising. The workshop will be delivered using Zoom web conferencing software along with R-Studio "in the cloud". You will need (free) accounts for both pieces of software. Dear MARMAM list subscribers, I am happy to share a recently-published paper that considers some of the difficult intersections between small cetacean conservation and the sustainable development of traditional whaling societies. The paper focuses on St. Vincent & the Grenadines in the Caribbean and concludes with recommendations for both future science and future policy. I have been working with the whaling and whale-conservation communities in St. Vincent for several years now and would welcome feedback from MARMAM list users via email: rfielding(a)coastal.edu. Abstract: The sustainable conservation of marine mammals depends not only upon considerations made for the marine mammals themselves. In many parts of the world, human societies have developed a deep reliance upon marine mammals as a food source. The sustainability and the equitable, sustainable development of these communities should be considered alongside efforts to conserve the marine mammals upon which people rely. As an example of the complexity inherent to simultaneous efforts on both fronts, this paper reviews and synthesizes two lines of research related to a small-scale whaling operation for odontocetes (dolphins and toothed whales) based in the Eastern Caribbean. The first considers the patterns of consumption and demand by the local public. The second analyzes the presence of mercury and other environmental contaminants in the tissues of the odontocetes. The results of this synthesis suggest that odontocete-based food products in the Eastern Caribbean are both highly popular and heavily contaminated, thus complicating an already-complex system in need of efforts toward both sustainability and sustainable development. The paper concludes with recommendations for both future research and future policy considerations. New Publication: Blubber fatty acid profiles of pregnant and lactating harbor seals (Victoria Neises)

Dear MARMAM colleagues, My co-authors and I are pleased to announce the recent publication of a new paper in Aquatic Mammals Journal. Neises VM, Karpovich SA, Keogh MJ, Trumble SJ (2022) Examination of Blubber Fatty Acids in Pregnant and Lactating Alaskan Harbor Seals (Phoca vitulina). Aquatic Mammals Journal 48(4): 362-379. Abstract: Pregnancy and lactation are energetically expensive for female mammals and greatly influence the evolution of species-specific reproductive strategies. Phocid (“true” seals) lactation is generally short in duration and relies heavily on stored energy, whereas otariid (sea lions and fur seals) lactation is generally much longer, and energy is supplemented by foraging. While a phocid, the smaller body size of the harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) is assumed to preclude the maintenance of lactation solely from stored energy. For this reason, their lactation strategy is believed intermediate to that of otariids and phocids. The purpose of this study was to characterize blubber fatty acids (FAs) of pregnant and lactating harbor seals and determine if lactating blubber FA profiles more closely resemble phocids or otariids. Blubber FA differences between female reproductive states (lactating, n = 18; pregnant, n = 7; non-lactating–non-pregnant, n = 17), mother–pup pairs (n = 6), and families (otariid, n = 3; phocid, n = 3) were evaluated using permutation analysis of variance (PERMANOVA). Compared to lactating females, pregnant harbor seals had elevated polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) and decreased monounsaturated FAs (MUFAs) in their blubber, suggesting pregnant harbor seals may prioritize PUFA storage in the blubber. Additionally, when compared to their pregnant counterparts, lactating harbor seals had lower PUFA, as well as saturated FAs (SFAs) and MUFA ≤ 16C, suggesting lactating harbor seals may utilize blubber FAs similar to other phocids. Lastly, while blubber SFA and MUFA concentrations may be conserved among pinniped families, PUFA concentrations among lactating phocids and otariids appear to be similar, suggesting lactating species may selectively mobilize PUFA from the blubber in a similar way despite family or lactation strategy. Understanding how family and body size influence the lactation strategy of a species provides greater insight into the physiological and behavioral limitations a species may have to both internal and external forces during such a critical time in its life history. New publication: Dive Behavior and Activity Patterns of Fin Whales in a Migratory Habitat

Sci. 9:875731. doi: 10.3389/fmars.2022.875731 Abstract: Efficient use of the energy budget is of fundamental importance for long-distance migrants, which must cope with seasonal energy demands and environmental conditions. Time-activity budgets can provide information on how animals balance energy use and acquisition over their annual cycle, and on the costs and benefits of different migratory strategies. Baleen whales, such as the fin whale, perform long migrations between feeding and breeding grounds. Although there are now a handful of studies describing the diving and foraging behavior of fin whales, most were carried out at their high-latitude foraging grounds, and very little is known about their behavior in wintering habitats or during migration. We analyzed time-depth recorder data to describe the diving behavior and activity patterns of fin whales in a migratory habitat. Using a hierarchical cluster analysis based on a set of dive variables, we identified six dive types. Four of these dive types (shallow exploratory, shallow active, deep exploratory and deep active) were likely associated to foraging. The other two comprised long non-active dives and dives of variable shape, which may represent resting, traveling or even vocalizing behavior. Shallow exploratory dives were the most frequent dive type (23%) and shallow active were the least frequent (5%). The two deepest dive types, deep active and exploratory, were predominantly carried out during the day, and night dives were significantly shallower than daylight dives, suggesting that fin whales tracked the vertical migration of prey. Whales spent 60% of their dive time engaged in dives associated with feeding and/or prey searching, suggesting they prioritized energy intake over energy conservation. Finally, we found that whales spent more time at or close (<15 m depth) to the surface at night (73%) than during the day (55%), indicating a higher vulnerability to ship strikes during this period. Our study provides novel information on the behavioral patterns and time-activity budgets of fin whales in a migratory habitat. This information is essential for bioenergetic analyses and to predict how fin whales respond to human activities and ongoing environmental changes.
