Frontiers in Marine Science. 9:867258. https://doi.org/10.3389/fmars.2022.867258 Abstract: Climate change is a global phenomenon, yet impacts on resource availability to predators may be spatially and temporally diverse and asynchronous. As capital breeders, whales are dependent on dense, predictable prey resources during foraging seasons. An Unusual Mortality Event (UME) of Eastern North Pacific (ENP) gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus) was declared in 2019 due to a dramatic rise in stranded animals, many emaciated. Climate change impacts may have affected prey availability on the primary foraging grounds of ENP gray whales (~20,000 individuals) in the Arctic and sub-Arctic region and in coastal habitats between northern California, USA and British Columbia, Canada where a small sub-group of ENP whales called the Pacific Coast Feeding Group (PCFG; ~230 individuals) forages. To investigate variability of gray whale body condition relative to changing ocean conditions, we compare two datasets of gray whale aerial photogrammetry images collected via Unoccupied Aircraft Systems (UAS) on the ENP wintering grounds in San Ignacio Lagoon, Mexico (SIL; n=111) and on the PCFG feeding grounds in Oregon, USA (n=72) over the same three-year period (2017–2019). We document concurrent body condition improvement of PCFG whales in Oregon while body condition of whales in SIL declined. This result indicates that the UME may have affected ENP whales due to reduced energetic gain on some Arctic/sub-Arctic foraging grounds, while PCFG whales are recovering from poor prey conditions during the NE Pacific marine heatwave event of 2014–2016. Surprisingly, we found that PCFG whales in Oregon had significantly worse body condition than whales in SIL, even when accounting for year and phenology. We derive support for this unexpected finding via photogrammetry analysis of opportunistic aerial images of gray whales on Arctic foraging grounds (n=18) compared to PCFG whales in Oregon (n=30): the body condition of PCFG whales was significantly lower (t=2.96, p=0.005), which may cause PCFG whales to have reduced reproductive capacity or resilience to environmental perturbations compared to ENP whales. Overall, our study elucidates divergent gray whale body condition across sub-groups and time, and we demonstrate the value of UAS to effectively monitor and identify the physiological response of whales to climate change. Call for candidacies to organize the 34th Conference of the European Cetacean Society 2023

Dear all, The first ever virtual European Cetacean Society Conference took place a couple of weeks ago. The local Organizing Committee in Israel did a great job and managed to put together brilliantly our 33rd annual ECS Conference. For those of you who registered for the conference, the recordings of the entire conference are available on the platform under the VOD tab; two parts for each day, before and after lunch break (https://ecs.b2b-wizard.com/expo <https://ecs.b2b-wizard.com/expo>). Posters are also still viewable and downloadable from the platform, where you will be able to go as many times as you like over the virtual ECS Conference materials until the end of May. One ECS Conference closes and it is time for us to start thinking about the ECS 34th Conference. That’s why we are doing a call across our membership and followers and we announce the opening for proposals for next year’s conference. We intend to have a fully functional in-person conference in 2023 with also a virtual component that should allow people non-present at the conference to follow the presentations. Those willing to present their candidacy to organize the ECS 34th Annual Conference should get in touch as soon as possible with Joan Gonzalvo, ECS Chair, by sending an email to chair(a)europeancetaceansociety.eu <mailto:chair@europeancetaceansociety.eu> . If you are considering this possibility but have some questions or uncertainties, please contact us anyway and we will try to clarify them. Many thanks, Sarah ________________________________________ 2 PhD students – Marine Ecology & Biological Oceanography Project: Evaluating ecosystem impacts on balaenid (bowhead and right) whale foraging ecology Project description: Climate driven shifts in zooplankton assemblages may affect the movement, habitat-use and foraging success of balaenid whales (right and bowhead) through 1) reduced prey quality, 2) variability in prey abundance, and 3) increased energy expenditure associated with increased time spent searching for and consuming lower quality prey. However, the degree to which both species will ultimately respond to spatiotemporal shifts in prey is unknown. Successful candidates will combine empirical data obtained during field campaigns and simulation modelling to better understand the energetic impact of climate change on present and future populations of North Atlantic right whales and bowhead whales. Using high-resolution, inertial sensing tags, students will quantify whale behaviour and estimate energetic expenditure. Obtaining simultaneous recordings about the quality and quantity of prey encountered, students will quantify energetic consumption and evaluate nutritional balance under current environmental conditions. This research will allow us to combine forecasts of climate induced shifts in habitat conditions and bioenergetic modelling, to assess the energy budget of future populations. Qualifications: We seek candidates with an MSc in Marine Ecology, Biology or Ocean Sciences, that will help foster a collegial culture that is grounded in diversity and inclusiveness. New publication: The Colombian Caribbean Sea, a tropical habitat for the vulnerable sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus)?

Puentes. (2022). The Colombian Caribbean Sea, a tropical habitat for the vulnerable sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus)? Oryx.doi: https://doi.org/10.1017/S0030605321001113 Abstract: We studied the sperm whale *Physeter macrocephalus* in the Colombian Caribbean by combining data from our offshore surveys of behaviour, encounter rate, group structure and density with data from the literature. We describe for the first time the potential distribution of sperm whales in the Colombian Caribbean, using sighting and acoustic data obtained during our surveys, published information, and opportunistic encounters during 1988–2020. Observations during surveys were conducted on seismic vessels over an area 68,904.7 km2 and 703 days of observation effort during 2011–2016. We recorded 98 individuals in a total of 50 groups, a density of 1.42 individuals per 1,000 km2. To determine the potential distribution of the species, we built Maxent models with uncorrelated environmental variables at five depths (from the surface to c. 2,000 m). The model for 1,000 m depth had the best performance, with areas of high probability of occurrence of sperm whales in the south and north-east Colombian Caribbean over the shelf break to waters up to c. 3,000 m deep, at a median distance of 107 km from the coast, and near the Archipelago of San Andres, Old Providence and Saint Catherine in the north-west. This area may be an important tropical habitat for sperm whales, in which they socialize, rest, breed and feed. Our study underlines the importance of monitoring marine mammals offshore and describes the potential distribution of sperm whales in the Colombian Caribbean, supporting conservation actions for this Vulnerable species, which is currently facing several threats in this region. *DOLPHIN RESEARCH INTERNSHIP IN PORTUGAL* *BACKGROUND:* The Marine Environment Research Association - AIMM, is a non-profit, non-governmental organization focused on the research and conservation of marine species, running an ongoing study of cetaceans in southern Portugal (Algarve). This project aims to obtain baseline information on species occurrence, behavior, and social structure of the local cetacean populations in order to obtain scientific data to support conservation measures and inform marine management policies. The main species observed are Short-beaked common dolphins (*Delphinus delphis*), Bottlenose dolphins (*Tursiops truncatus*), and Harbour porpoises (*Phocoena phocoena*), although other species such as Minke whales (*Balaenoptera acutorostrata*) and Fin whales (*Balaenoptera physalus*) can also be sighted. AIMM Interns are young, hard-working individuals who are willing to contribute to the association and support on-going activities, while experiencing fieldwork at sea, learning data collection and processing methodologies, and being a part of AIMM's team of researchers and marine biologists for a period of time. All team members and participants share accommodation, house tasks, knowledge and experience in an friendly and multicultural atmosphere. Interns have the additional option to enrich their time with AIMM by beginning or improving their SCUBA skills with a PADI-certified instructor, hiking, kayaking, surf classes and others. *WHERE:* Albufeira, Algarve, Portugal *WHEN:* The field season lasts from 1st of May to 30th November 2021. The minimum internship attendance are 7 days, preferably starting on a Monday. *FIELDWORK: *The field trips are conducted in AIMM's research vessel, Ketos, or in opportunistic platforms (commercial dolphin-watching boats). Fieldwork is dependent on weather conditions and seat availability in the dolphin-watching boats. Field days can be intense, especially in the peak of summer, but are fulfilling and good fun. The interns will be *trained to*: - Conduct on-board surveys of marine species occurrence; - Record effort tracks on a handheld GPS; - Collect data such as behavior, group size and species; - Collect photos for photo-identification, acoustic recording and underwater videos; - Secchi disk methodology; - Help to collect drone footage and data from the marine mammals. *DATA ANALYSIS:* This will be conducted on a daily basis and will entail entering data into established databases and spreadsheets, photo-identification processing, and preliminary data interpretation. *INTERNSHIP FEES:* AIMM is a non-profit organization that relies on donations from our volunteers, partners, and conservation-minded people like you so that we may continue our important research and education programs in the Algarve. Marine Animal Rescue is a small non-profit organization providing live marine mammal stranding response throughout most of Los Angeles County and Catalina Island. MAR conducts hundreds of marine mammal rescues annually. Rescued animals consist primarily of pinnipeds with occasional cetaceans, sea turtles and seabirds. MAR also works as a member of the large whale disentanglement network. We have an opening for a Marine Mammal Rescue Specialist, which requires significant field and wildlife capture experience. This is an extremely physical, inherently dangerous position with risk of injury. During the busy season, from January-June, the Rescue Specialist can work over 40hrs/week, as well as evenings, weekends and holidays. New paper: Habitat use of the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)

My co-author and I are pleased to inform you about this recently published article. Habitat use of the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) in the Gulf of Guayaquil, Ecuador: management needs for a threatened population. Ocean and Costal Management, 223: 106174. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ocecoaman.2022.106174. Abstract The habitat use by two neighboring coastal bottlenose dolphin communities (Posorja and El Morro) was eval[1]uated in the western inner estuary of the Gulf of Guayaquil, Ecuador (3◦S, 80◦55′ W). The study aimed to determine to what extent some environmental variables influence dolphins’ distribution and behavior. The analysis included 344 dolphin groups recorded between 2014 and 2019. For both dolphin communities, 95% of home ranges were estimated (23.5 km2 Posorja and 44.8 km2 , El Morro). Home ranges overlapped in an area of 11.2 km2 . No clear preference for areas to carry out specific activities was found, as dolphins used the same areas for multiple purposes. Multinomial logistic regression with four environmental parameters (distance to shore, depth, hour of day and tide) were used as predictor variables of behavior. A significant relationship between the tidal cycle and behavioral states was found with feeding occurring more frequently during the low tide, so[1]cializing and transit during high tide, and resting during mid-tide. Count models were used with environmental and behavioral variables to explore their relationship with dolphins’ group size. Differences with respect to dolphin counts were associated with tide height and socialization. Depth is relevant for predicting dolphin counts mainly during high tide. We recommend that environmental authorities consider the dolphins’ preference to carry out their activities within small home ranges, identify overlapping human activities and take steps to reduce potential conflicts, such as prohibiting all types of gillnets in areas of high concentration of dolphins. Likewise, regular assessments are required to detect future changes in both dolphins’ habitat and human uses over time. The article is available from the editorial site. Publication on drone-based photogrammetry of manatees

Greetings MARMAM, I am pleased to announce the publication of our newest article “Drone-based photogrammetry assessments of body size and body condition of Antillean manatees” in *Mammalian Biology.* *Abstract * Assessments of individual animal health alerts to early signs of population level effects in wildlife but often rely on logistically complex wild animal captures, hindering our understanding of the wellbeing of populations in regions with limited resources. Here, we tested photogrammetry methods using small aerial drones for accurate morphometric measurements of Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) body size and body condition. We flew drones to collect aerial imagery of captive manatees in Quintana Roo, Mexico and compared manatee body size measurements from scaled aerial imagery with physically measured body sizes. To assess optimal altitude for imaging, body size measurements acquired with an out-of-the-box drone were compared to measurements from the same drone model equipped with a LiDAR for precision altimetry flown at three altitudes (30 m, 50 m, 70 m). The accuracy of body size measures was similar for all drone models but improved with the addition of LiDAR. Difference in body size estimates between manual and drone-based measurements indicate a correction factor may be needed to account for disparities. We then used body size measurements to develop a body condition index for Antillean manatees.
