Hello MARMAM! I am excited to announce our summer internship is now live. This year we are offering housing AND a reduced meal per diem of $100 per week for 12 weeks. Please read below to see the internship description and where to apply! *Wildlife Response Internship* *Summary:* The Alaska SeaLife Center is dedicated to understanding and maintaining the integrity of the marine ecosystem of Alaska through research, rehabilitation, and public education. All internships are unpaid with a minimum 12-16 week commitment required. Housing is provided. The position is scheduled five days and 40 hours each week. Applicants must be willing to work a flexible schedule, as hours may include evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays. Interns will be exposed to and gain experience in the rescue and rehabilitation effort of Alaska’s stranded wild marine mammals and birds. In addition to learning animal restraint and husbandry skills, interns are expected to work with the public in-person and over the phone in a professional and courteous manner. Education/Training Requirements: Internship is intended for adults over 18 years of age. Applicants with a background in biology and wildlife rescue preferred. Experience with Google Suite and Zims360 preferred. *Essential Duties:* Under the guidance of Wildlife Response staff, the Intern will be trained and expected to perform the following duties: 1. Make daily animal diet preparations and perform routine cleaning of quarantine and work areas. 2. Assist in the care of the Center’s rehabilitating animals and maintenance of the facility. 3. Assist in pool cleanings and water quality testing. 4. Assist with the Stranded Animal Hot Line and interact with the public professionally. 5. Assist with rescue and release of stranded animals as opportunities present. Please note, due to the remote nature of Alaska, most animal recovery in the field happens with local authorities and the animal is transferred to the Center. Rarely do staff pick up animals directly. 6. Participate in educational talks or tours, and assist in the creation of computerized learning modules. 7. Maintain and update computerized medical records. 8. Help ensure that the rehabilitation clinic and quarantine area are stocked and prepared to receive animals. 9. Comply with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs. 10. Perform other duties relating to the Center’s goals and mission statement as required. *Other Skills and Abilities:* Skill in written and verbal communication, experience giving public presentations and/or working with various age groups in an educational setting. Ability to be organized, self-motivated, detail oriented, and possess a strong desire to see to the completion of projects is highly desired. *Physical Requirements:* The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Applicants should be agile with a good sense of balance in order to maneuver around the exhibits and holding areas, and be able to get on hands and knees to restrain marine mammal patients. PhD DTA opportunity at the University of Plymouth, UK

Dear Marmamers, We are delighted to invite applicants for a PhD opportunity at the University of Plymouth to survey cetaceans in the western English Channel and estimate abundance, distribution and exposure to shipping noise. The project will manage ongoing data collection aboard the University's sailing vessel 'Take the Helm' conducting visual and acoustic surveys using a towed hydrophone array in the English Channel and combine these data with passive acoustic data from a moored hydrophone to model exposure to vessel noise. The project will be supervised by Dr Simon Ingram and Dr Clare Embling at the University of Plymouth in collaboration with Dr Rosalyn Putland at CEFAS (Centre for Environment Fisheries & Aquaculture Science). Internship Opportunity: Education and Outreach Assistant

The Sea Watch Foundation (SWF) is looking for an Education and Outreach Assistant to assist with environmental outreach activities at Sea Watch’s base in New Quay, West Wales. The Education and Outreach Assistant will gain experience in the following areas: Running a Visitor centre and public awareness activities Liaising with the local community and boat operators Promoting and planning events Working with and organising school visits Managing social media Creating educational resources Supervising interns Land and boat based cetacean surveys The field season will run from April to October 2023. Our Education and Outreach Assistant is required to stay for at least half of the season (choosing Period 1-2 or 3-4) but can also choose to stay the whole 2023 season. The assistant will be based in New Quay, West Wales. Accommodation will be provided in a house shared with the Research Interns at a subsidised rate. The Sea Watch Foundation (SWF) is looking for a Research Assistant and Intern Coordinator to assist with the running of the Cardigan Bay Monitoring Project. The project is based in the picturesque town of New Quay, West Wales, and supports the conservation management of one of only two semi-resident bottlenose dolphin populations in the UK. The Research Assistant will gain experience in the following areas: Daily land-based surveys Full day boat surveys Opportunistic data collection from wildlife tour boats Training and supervising interns Assisting in all stages of photo-identification and matching Assisting and supervising data entry and processing Public speaking and raising public awareness Organising and planning environmental education initiatives and events Assisting with the running adult cetacean surveying training courses Opportunity to undertake a personal research project In addition to these tasks, we have some specialist equipment: a hydrophone, a polecam, and an aerial drone to opportunistically collect acoustic, video and aerial data during boat-based surveys. The internship runs from the 27th March to 5th November 2023. This is an unpaid internship but accommodation is provided for the Research Assistant free of charge. The Research Assistant will be trained in boat survey protocols, and photo-identification of bottlenose dolphins but the following skills are advantageous: Strong team player with a sense of humour with previous experience supervising volunteers as you’ll be living and working with a small team in the changeable Welsh weather!
