New paper on risk-reward trade-offs in foraging strategies of elephant seals (Sarah Kienle)

Hello all, We are excited to share our paper "Trade-offs between foraging reward and mortality risk drive sex-specific foraging strategies in sexually dimorphic northern elephant seals" that just came out in the Royal Society of Open Science. Authors: Sarah Kienle, Ari Friedlaender, Daniel Crocker, Rita Mehta, and Daniel Costa Abstract: Sex-specific phenotypic differences are widespread throughout the animal kingdom. Reproductive advantages provided by trait differences come at a cost. Here, we link sex-specific foraging strategies to trade-offs between foraging reward and mortality risk in sexually dimorphic northern elephant seals (*Mirounga angustirostris*). We analyse a decadal dataset on movement patterns, dive behaviour, foraging success and mortality rates. Females are deep-diving predators in open ocean habitats. Males are shallow-diving benthic predators in continental shelf habitats. Males gain six times more mass and acquire energy 4.1 times faster than females. High foraging success comes with a high mortality rate. Males are six times more likely to die than females. These foraging strategies and trade-offs are related to different energy demands and life-history strategies. Males use a foraging strategy with a high mortality risk to attain large body sizes necessary to compete for females, as only a fraction of the largest males ever mate. Females use a foraging strategy with a lower mortality risk, maximizing reproductive success by pupping annually over a long lifespan. Our results highlight how sex-specific traits can drive disparity in mortality rates and expand species' niche space. Further, trade-offs between foraging rewards and mortality risk can differentially affect each sex's ability to maximize fitness. The paper is available here: https://www.mdpi.com/2306-7381/9/2/38 Abstract Cetacean brain sampling may be an arduous task due to the difficulty of collecting and histologically preparing such rare and large specimens. Thus, one of the main challenges of working with cetaceans’ brains is to establish a valid methodology for an optimal manipulation and fixation of the brain tissue, which allows the samples to be viable for neuroanatomical and neuropathological studies. With this in view, we validated a methodology in order to preserve the quality of such large brains (neuroanatomy/neuropathology) and at the same time to obtain fresh brain samples for toxicological, virological, and microbiological analysis (neuropathology). A fixation protocol adapted to brains, of equal or even three times the size of human brains, was studied and tested. Finally, we investigated the usefulness of a panel of 20 antibodies (neuromarkers) associated with the normal structure and function of the brain, pathogens, age-related, and/or functional variations. The sampling protocol and some of the 20 neuromarkers have been thought to explore neurodegenerative diseases in these long-lived animals. To conclude, many of the typical measures used to evaluate neuropathological changes do not tell us if meaningful cellular changes have occurred. Cedar Key Dolphin Project Summer 2022 Field Assistantships - Call for Applications

Dear Marmam subscribers, The Cedar Key Dolphin Project (CKDP) has been conducting surveys of resident bottlenose dolphins around the Cedar Keys, Florida, for more than 20 years. The project goals include investigating the ecology, social structure, and communication of the local population, with a focus on documenting a unique foraging behavior, Driver-Barrier foraging, which is the only known example of a role-specialized behavior in a delphinid species. Research takes place in Cedar Key, Florida and the surrounding coastline, 3 hours north of Tampa and 60 miles west of Gainesville. For more information regarding the project, please visit our website: www.cedarkeydolphinproject.org The CKDP is now taking applications for full-time field assistants for the 2022 field season this upcoming summer, between May and July. Applicants available for the full 12-week period will be given priority. Please note that we receive far more applications than the number of positions that we can offer, therefore the selection process is highly competitive. Assistants will be expected to work on a boat on all good weather days (up to 7 days per week), for up to 12 hours at a time. Typical weather conditions in summer include 95 degree heat, high humidity, and no breezes. When the weather does not permit fieldwork, work will consist of photo-identification, data entry, and equipment maintenance. Assistants can expect to spend 40% of their time in the field and 60% in the lab. Assistants may also be asked to assist in local marine mammal stranding response via partner organizations. This is a volunteer position. Shared housing and food will be provided, but assistants will be responsible for arranging their own transportation to Florida. Dear colleagues, The English version of the PhD thesis of Dr. Eduard Degollada titled "*Functional anatomy and histology of the nasal sac system in odontocetes (superfamily Delphinoidea)*", is now publicly available. The original version in Spanish was translated to English to make its content available to the broad scientific community. Prologue to the English edition: "Although this PhD thesis was defended in 1998, personal commitments and limitations have led me to postpone publishing the different scientific advances the dissertation carried at that time. Since then, several papers have appeared, giving light to the complex anatomy of the odontocete sound production structures and mechanisms. At the same time, the main topics of what was presented in this dissertation are still unrevealed. This, and the fact that it was originally written in Spanish, made me decide to translate it into English to allow the scientific community access to its content. I would like to point out that there was no digital imagery at that time, as all was based on conventional photography and slides. I really think and hope the current publication will be useful for other anatomists or scientists in general, looking for a deeper insight into this subject. I would like to thank Steffen De Vreese for the translation, as he did not just translate the dissertation into English but needed a comprehensive understanding of the morphology and function described for a better interpretation and writing." See the ad below, and email William Halliday (whalliday(a)wcs.org) if you have any questions. *Graduate Student Opportunities at the University of Victoria to Study Vessel Noise Impacts on Ringed Seals in the Canadian Arctic * We are seeking highly qualified candidates for two graduate student positions to work on a large project focused on the impacts of underwater noise from vessel traffic on ringed seals (*Pusa hispida*) in the Canadian Arctic. The students will be based at the University of Victoria in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and would work closely with Dr. Francis Juanes (Department of Biology) and Dr. Stan Dosso (School of Earth and Ocean Sciences) at the University of Victoria, and with Dr. Stephen Insley and Dr. William Halliday of Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Canada ( www.arcticnoise.ca) both of whom are adjunct professors at the University of Victoria. One position will be based in the Department of Biology, co-supervised by Dr. Juanes and Dr. Insley, and will focus on the spatial ecology of ringed seals and quantify their exposure and behavioural responses to underwater noise from vessel traffic. The other position will be based in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, co-supervised by Dr. Dosso and Dr. Halliday, and will focus on ringed seal bioacoustics, including the impacts of underwater noise on ringed seal vocalizations. Both positions will involve some fieldwork in the western Canadian Arctic, and will also involve significant data processing and analytical techniques. The positions, pending a successful application for a Mitacs fellowship, will start in September 2022, and include four years of funding. Candidates for both positions should have a good understanding of marine mammal ecology and conservation, a firm understanding of statistical analyses, and should possess excellent English oral and written communication skills. The ideal candidate for the spatial ecology position should have experience in spatial ecology, analyses of animal movement data, and using Geographic Information Systems, as well as some knowledge of underwater acoustics. The ideal candidate for the bioacoustics position should have experience in passive acoustic monitoring, underwater acoustics, and bioacoustics. Candidates for both positions should be comfortable conducting fieldwork in remote, harsh environments, including working out of small boats. Candidates will ideally be at the PhD level, and should have obtained an MSc by September 2022. Exceptions will be considered for excellent candidates with very relevant experience who are at the MSc level. This internship is based out of our International Operations Center in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, USA. IFAW's Marine Mammal Rescue and Research program is a federally authorized program dedicated to marine mammal stranding response on Cape Cod and southeastern Massachusetts. Our program strives to promote the conservation of marine mammal species and their habitat by improving the rescue and humane care of stranded marine mammals, advancing stranding science, and increasing public awareness through education. Cape Cod is a marine mammal stranding "hot spot," with an average of over 261 strandings occurring each year. These strandings include live and dead seals, whales, porpoises, and dolphins. *Sarasota Dolphin Research Program Internships* The Chicago Zoological Society’s Sarasota Dolphin Research Program (SDRP), based at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida, conducts the world’s longest-running study of a dolphin population. The program’s primary goal is to contribute to a better understanding of the structure and dynamics of populations of small cetaceans, as well as the natural and anthropogenic factors that impact them. The SDRP uses an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach in conducting studies of bottlenose dolphins within Sarasota Bay, Tampa Bay, Charlotte Harbor, Naples/Marco Island, and the Gulf of Mexico coastal waters. Behavioral, location, individual, and environmental data will be recorded for each dolphin group, and additional data related to human-dolphin interactions will also be collected in conjunction with this project. While in the lab (at least 2 weeks per month), work will generally involve photo-identification of dolphins, computer data entry and double-checking, logging of videos into database and archives, dolphin dorsal fin identification catalog updates, boat and field equipment maintenance, and other duties. 2) *Dolphin prey and habitat use project**:* (/JAN-MAR & JUN-SEPT ONLY/) This study uses the Sarasota dolphin community and fish populations to study relationships between distributions of dolphins and their prey and factors that affect fish community ecology, such as red tide. While in the field, work will involve sampling of fish communities through purse seining techniques and collection of other environmental data. Interns typically participate in this project 2-3 days per month. 3)*Other projects* (/TBD/) Interns may participate in other research projects, depending on availability and timing of grant funding for specific projects.Interns may also be asked to assist with dolphin rescues. Interns should expect to spend about 20% of their time in the field, and about 80% of their time in the lab working with data, or performing equipment maintenance. There is no financial compensation for these internship positions, and successful applicants will be responsible for their own living and transportation expenses. Shared housing opportunities near Mote Marine Laboratory may be available. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT - Postdoctoral Scholar Genomic and epigenomic monitoring of endangered whales and dolphins The Marine Mammal Institute of Oregon State University invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Postdoctoral Scholar position. Reappointment is conditional on funding and at the discretion of the Principal Investigator. The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing projects investigating genomic diversity and population dynamics of endangered whales and dolphins. This will require application of bioinformatic pipelines and statistical analyses to next-generation sequencing for genomics and to a custom methylation array for epigenomics. The long-term objective is to integrate genomic diversity, kinship and age structure into population dynamic models for the Cook Inlet beluga whales and New Zealand endemic Māui dolphins. The position is located at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon where the Scholar will work with Scott Baker in the Cetacean Conservation and Genomic Laboratory and, remotely, with collaborators, Paul Wade (NOAA) and Rochelle Constantine (University of Auckland, New Zealand). Required qualifications include a PhD in biological sciences (genetics, ecology or evolution), with an emphasis in genomics, bioinformatics, statistics or population modeling, and a demonstrated publication record. The PhD must have been awarded within the last five years. Preferred qualifications include experience with programming (Python and R) and management of large datasets typical of next-generation sequencing and methylation arrays. An appreciation of collaborative, interdisciplinary, research and a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion is expected. The minimum stipend for a candidate with no prior postdoctoral experience is $53,760/year with annual increments for experience following NIH guidelines. Principal duties will include: ● Prepare, analyze, and visualize spatial ocean data, including vessel (Automatic Identification System) data and whale data from technologies such as near real-time acoustic monitoring instruments, visual sightings, and dynamic habitat models ● Manage a database in data in Google Cloud Platform BigQuery, which may include but is not limited to using SQL and RStudio to create, update, and run scripts that process and analyze AIS data to create comprehensive vessel analytics ● Communicate about research progress and findings with stakeholders and the public via social media, media outreach, newsletters, and blogs ● Liaise with partners and stakeholders in research, government, and industry to share research outcomes and solicit stakeholder feedback ● Explore and cultivate opportunities for project expansion and stakeholder engagement ● Coordinate in-person and virtual meetings with multiple stakeholder groups ● Assist with research tasks for other Benioff Ocean Initiative projects based on interest and need This appointment includes a competitive benefits package with medical, dental and vision insurance and a UC retirement plan.
