Quantifying sublethal Florida manatee–watercraft interactions by examining scars on manatee carcasses ABSTRACT: A leading human-related threat to the Florida manatee Trichechus manatus latirostris is collisions with watercraft, which account for 20-25% of reported mortalities. Quantitative threat assessments do not include information on all known manatee-watercraft interactions. These interactions often result in sublethal wounding, usually leaving multiple fresh external wounds in a variety of patterns. These wounds then resolve into well-healed scars. We characterized and quantified watercraft-related scar patterns (1 pattern = 1 strike event) on 2935 nonperinatal carcasses (>150 cm total length) that were recovered from 2007 through 2016 to compare the number of patterns by life stage, sex, and population region and across years. We used generalized linear mixed models to examine the effects of several factors on the probability carcasses having scars and on the number of scar patterns per carcass. The models indicated that approximately 96% of adults, approximately 70% of subadults, and approximately 34% of calves had watercraft-related scars. The raw data showed that 1 in 4 adults had been hit 10 or more times; 5 adult carcasses bore evidence of 40 or more strikes. On average, adult females had more scar patterns than did adult males. Manatees on Florida’s west coast had more scar patterns than did those on the east coast, while carcasses from the less populated Everglades had significantly fewer scar patterns than did those from the rest of the state. These results improve our understanding of the extent of sublethal injury of the Florida manatee caused by boat strikes. MARINE MAMMALS RESEARCH INTERNSHIP IN TURKEY *BACKGROUND : *Marine Mammals Research Association (DMAD) is a non-profit and non-governmental organization that aims to create an ecological consciousness through its scientific research and outreach activities. DMAD works on 5 projects in 3 different countries with the aim to raise both scientific and public awareness of critical habitats, the problems they are facing and implement actions in order to conserve the marine biodiversity in Levantine, Aegean and Adriatic seas. DMAD has trained more than a hundred interns and volunteers to date to help build conservation capacities. The main species studied and observed in our projects with DMAD are bottlenose dolphin (*Tursiops truncatus*), striped dolphin (*Stenella coeruleoalba*), common dolphin (*Delphinus delphis*), Cuvier’s beaked whale (*Ziphius cavirostris*) and sperm whale (*Physeter macrocephalus*). Other species like fin whale (*Balaenoptera physalus*) and Risso’s dolphin (*Grampus griseus*) can also be sighted. Who we are looking for? Our scientific work is supported by the help of interns and volunteers, coming from all over the world and motivated to leave a positive impact on marine wildlife protection and conservation. During your stay in Antalya, you will be involved in all of our current cetacean research projects and participate in various survey efforts from the Turkish Straits System to the Eastern Mediterranean of Turkey including sites such as Istanbul, Çeşme, Dilek peninsula and Antalya. Unlike the western Mediterranean, extensive baseline knowledge in the eastern Mediterranean has not yet been established and therefore you will be at the forefront of cetacean research in this area. Mixed-species dolphin groups in the Gulf of Corinth

The Gulf of Corinth, in Greece, hosts mixed-species groups of striped, common and admixed (striped x common) dolphins, plus a single Risso's dolphin (1, 2, 3). The case for admixture is based on genetics (4). In the Gulf, striped dolphins are Vulnerable (5) and common dolphins are Critically Endangered (6, 7). Graduate students, undergraduates and recent graduates, this is the final call for abstracts for GSS! They are due TODAY (March 19th). See details below for more information on the conference and how to register. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) Marine Science Graduate Student Organization will be hosting a Graduate Student Symposium (GSS 2021) during the weekend of April 16th-18th. Due to COVID-19, we have opted to hold the event virtually this year; however, this allows us to expand our range of opportunities to all grad students and undergraduates and to a wider variety of research topics, including sessions for marine mammal research, such as megafauna conservation, stable isotope, trace element and genetics work. We will also be hosting a keynote speaker, mental health panel and a variety of fun and educational workshops: Fishing Rigs and Fly Tying, Communication and Leadership Styles, Diversity of Careers, Social Media for Scientists and Science-ing Abroad. We will be holding the event as a live virtual conference, meaning that students will present in real-time in front of virtual audiences and receive live questions and feedback. To achieve this goal, we encourage all students, faculty and staff at research institutions and members of the press and general public to join us and participate throughout the weekend. To be a presenter, you must be either a graduate student or undergraduate, but you do not have to be a student to attend. The cost to register as a student or faculty member is $45, which will include a welcome packet and t-shirt (and abstract fee if you are a student). New publication: Short-finned pilot whales use surprisingly short biosonar ranges during deep foraging dives

Echolocation click parameters of short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) in the wild The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America 149, 1923-1931, https://doi.org/10.1121/10.0003762 Abstract Short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) are large, deep-diving predators with diverse foraging strategies, but little is known about their echolocation. To quantify the source properties of short-finned pilot whale clicks, we made 15 deployments off the coast of Tenerife of a deep-water hydrophone array consisting of seven autonomous time-synced hydrophone recorders (SoundTraps), enabling acoustic localization and quantification of click source parameters. Of 8185 recorded pilot whale clicks, 47 were classified as being recorded on-axis, with a mean peak-to-peak source level (SL) of 181 ± 7 dB re 1 μPa, a centroid frequency of 40 ± 4 kHz, and a duration of 57 ± 23 μs. A fit to a piston model yielded an estimated half-power (–3 dB) beam width of 13.7° [95% confidence interval (CI) 13.2°–14.5°] and a mean directivity index (DI) of 22.6 dB (95% CI 22.5–22.9 dB). These measured SLs and DIs are surprisingly low for a deep-diving toothed whale, suggesting we sampled the short-finned pilot whales in a context with little need for operating a long-range biosonar. The substantial spectral overlap with beaked whale clicks emitted in similar deep-water habitats implies that pilot whale clicks may constitute a common source of false detections in beaked whale passive acoustic monitoring efforts. *DOLPHIN RESEARCH INTERNSHIP IN PORTUGAL* *BACKGROUND:* The Marine Environment Research Association - AIMM, is a non-profit, non-governmental organization focused on the research and conservation of marine species, running an ongoing study of cetaceans in southern Portugal (Algarve). This project aims to obtain baseline information on species occurrence, behavior, and social structure of the local cetacean populations in order to obtain scientific data to support conservation measures and inform marine management policies. The main species observed are Short-beaked common dolphins (*Delphinus delphis*), Bottlenose dolphins (*Tursiops truncatus*), and Harbour porpoises (*Phocoena phocoena*), although other species such as Minke whales (*Balaenoptera acutorostrata*) and Fin whales (*Balaenoptera physalus*) can also be sighted. AIMM Interns are young, hard-working individuals who are willing to contribute to the association and support on-going activities, while experiencing fieldwork at sea, learning data collection and processing methodologies, and being a part of AIMM's team of researchers and marine biologists for a period of time. All team members and participants share accommodation, house tasks, knowledge and experience in an friendly and multicultural atmosphere. Interns have the additional option to enrich their time with AIMM by beginning or improving their SCUBA skills with a PADI-certified instructor, hiking, kayaking, surf classes and others. *WHERE:* Albufeira, Algarve, Portugal *WHEN:* The field season lasts from 1st of May to 30th November 2021. The minimum internship attendance are 7 days, preferably starting on a Monday. *FIELDWORK: *The field trips are conducted in AIMM's research vessel, Ketos, or in opportunistic platforms (commercial dolphin-watching boats). Fieldwork is dependent on weather conditions and seat availability in the dolphin-watching boats. Field days can be intense, especially in the peak of summer, but are fulfilling and good fun. The interns will be *trained to*: - Conduct on-board surveys of marine species occurrence; - Record effort tracks on a handheld GPS; - Collect data such as behavior, group size and species; - Collect photos for photo-identification, acoustic recording and underwater videos; - Secchi disk methodology; - Help to collect drone footage and data from the marine mammals. *DATA ANALYSIS:* This will be conducted on a daily basis and will entail entering data into established databases and spreadsheets, photo-identification processing, and preliminary data interpretation. *INTERNSHIP FEES:* AIMM is a non-profit organization that relies on donations from our volunteers, partners, and conservation-minded people like you so that we may continue our important research and education programs in the Algarve. New publication: Resistance and susceptibility of dolphins to cetacean morbillivirus (Kimberley Batley)

Genome-wide association study of an unusual dolphin mortality event reveals candidate genes for susceptibility and resistance to cetacean morbillivirus. Evolutionary Applications. https://doi.org/10.1111/eva.12747 Abstract: Infectious diseases are significant demographic and evolutionary drivers of populations, but studies about the genetic basis of disease resistance and susceptibility are scarce in wildlife populations. Cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV) is a highly contagious disease that is increasing in both geographic distribution and incidence, causing unusual mortality events (UME) and killing tens of thousands of individuals across multiple cetacean species worldwide since the late 1980’s. The largest CeMV outbreak in the Southern Hemisphere reported to date occurred in Australia in 2013, where it was a major factor in a UME, killing mainly young Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus). Using cases (non-survivors) and controls (putative survivors) from the most affected population, we carried out a genome-wide association study to identify candidate genes for resistance and susceptibility to CeMV. The genomic dataset consisted of 278,147,988 sequence reads and 35,493 high quality SNPs genotyped across 38 individuals. Association analyses found highly significant differences in allele and genotype frequencies amongst cases and controls at 65 SNPs, and Random Forests conservatively identified eight as candidates. Annotation of these SNPs identified five candidate genes (MAPK8, FBXW11, INADL, ANK3, and ACOX3) with functions associated with stress, pain and immune responses. Our findings provide the first insights into the genetic basis of host defence to this highly contagious disease, enabling the development of an applied evolutionary framework to monitor CeMV resistance across cetacean species. Biomarkers could now be established to assess potential risk factors associated with these genes in other CeMV affected cetacean populations and species. These results could also possibly aid in the advancement of vaccines against morbilliviruses. New publication: Echolocation characteristics of franciscana dolphins (*Pontoporia blainvillei*) (Diogo D. Barcellos and Marcos C. de O. Santos) Dear All, We are pleased to share our new publications in Marine Mammal Science, “Echolocation characteristics of franciscana dolphins (*Pontoporia blainvillei*)” by Diogo D. Barcellos, and Marcos C. de O. Santos from Laboratório de Biologia da Conservação de Mamíferos Aquáticos, Instituto Oceanográfico da Universidade de São Paulo. The franciscana dolphin, *Pontoporia blainvillei*, is a small odontocete and the sole living member of Pontoporiidae. Its distribution is restricted to the coastal shallow waters in the limited regions of southwestern Atlantic Ocean. The study “Echolocation characteristics of franciscana dolphins (*Pontoporia blainvillei*)” describes echolocation clicks of this species around Anchieta Island, southeastern Brazil, using a non-invasive methodology.
