Dear MarMamers My coauthors and I would like to share our new open access review on “How Do Marine Mammals Manage and Usually Avoid Gas Emboli Formation and Gas Embolic Pathology? Critical Clues From Studies of Wild Dolphins” (https://www.frontiersin.org/article/10.3389/fmars.2021.598633 <https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fphys.2020.604018/abstract>), which is a part of a collection of papers that celebrates "The Dolphins of Sarasota Bay: Lessons from 50 years of Research and Conservation" (https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/12832) In this review, we have tried to summarize decompression theory based on studies on humans and land mammals that have allowed us to understand the physiological processes that may result in Gas Embolic Pathology (GEP) in marine mammals (and sea turtles). We then review the studies over the last 15 years that have investigated the the potential mechanism that result in GEP in during unusual events such as sonar exposure, and how this research has resulted in the Selective gas Exchange which explains how marine mammals can selective exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide without exchange of nitrogen and thereby maximize aerobic dive duration and also minimize the risk of the bends (see below for short video explaining this hypothesis). However, evidence that marine mammals experience gas bubbles during diving is growing, causing concern that these bubbles may cause gas emboli pathology (GEP) under unusual circumstances. Marine mammal management, and usual avoidance, of gas emboli and GEP, or the bends, became a topic of intense scientific interest after sonar-exposed, mass-stranded deep-diving whales were observed with gas bubbles. Theoretical models, based on our current understanding of diving physiology in cetaceans, predict that the tissue and blood N2 levels in the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) are at levels that would result in severe DCS symptoms in similar sized terrestrial mammals. However, the dolphins appear to have physiological or behavioral mechanisms to avoid excessive blood N2 levels, or may be more resistant to circulating bubbles through immunological/biochemical adaptations. Studies on behavior, anatomy and physiology of marine mammals have enhanced our understanding of the mechanisms that are thought to prevent excessive uptake of N2. This has led to generation of a new hypothesis, the selective gas exchange hypothesis, as to how stress-induced behavioral change may cause failure of the normal physiology, which results in excessive uptake of N2, and in extreme cases may cause formation of symptomatic gas emboli. Studies on cardiorespiratory function have been integral to the development of this hypothesis, with work initially being conducted on excised tissues and cadavers, followed by studies on anesthetized animals or trained animals under human care, participating voluntarily. These studies then enabled research on free-ranging common bottlenose dolphins in Sarasota Bay, FL, and off Bermuda, and have included work on the metabolic and cardiorespiratory physiology of both shallow- and deep-diving dolphins and have been integral to better understand how cetaceans can dive to extreme depths, for long durations. Abstract Some species exhibit behavioral plasticity by altering their aggressive behavior based on their opponent. Atlantic spotted dolphins (*Stenella frontalis*) and bottlenose dolphins (*Tursiops truncatus*) are two sympatric species resident to the northern Bahamas. We examined whether groups of adult male spotted dolphins demonstrated behavioral plasticity during two different types of aggressive interactions. We described and compared the types of aggressive behaviors used during intraspecific aggression and interspecific aggression with bottlenose dolphins. Between the years 1991-2004, twenty-two aggressive encounters (11 intraspecific (spotted only), 11 interspecific (spotted vs. bottlenose)) were behaviorally analyzed. Twenty-three specific aggressive Behavioral Events, further grouped into three Behavioral Types, were examined throughout these encounters. Similarities and differences in the use of the Behavioral Types occurred during intra- and interspecific aggression. Groups of male Atlantic spotted dolphins altered their behavior during aggressive encounters with male bottlenose dolphins. Spotted dolphins increased their use of the Pursuit Behavioral Type and did not use the Display Behavioral Type significantly more than the Contact Behavioral Type during interspecific aggression. The increased use of a more overt and energy intensive Behavioral Type, Pursuit, suggests that Atlantic spotted dolphins altered their behavior during aggressive encounters with bottlenose dolphins to compensate during fights with a larger species and/or to effectively communicate with a different species. In the southern range of New Caledonia (South Pacific), a long-term dataset of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) encounters primarily during winter seasons 1997 to 2019 (473 group observations) was used to assess social structure, habitat use and potential threats. A total of 338 individuals were photographically identified, forming three distinct communities in the south-west lagoon, the south lagoon and the Isle of Pines. Mark-recapture histories revealed that the three communities were weakly connected and might be considered as independent management units. Suitable habitats were estimated with presence-only distribution models relative to topographic and seabed substrate predictors. Habitat suitability increased with proximity to coasts or reefs, at shallow depth, and over muddy bottom. These habitats had various levels of protection and were used by humans, mostly in the south-west lagoon. External injuries were interpreted to determine natural interactions and potential anthropogenic threats. The prevalence in injuries did not vary among the three areas. A substantial proportion of injuries related to propeller hits was reported, representing a total of 16.7% (34 of 204) of all injuries observed on dolphins. The three communities of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins revealed in the southern part of New Caledonia are particularly vulnerable due to their insularity, their coastal habitat use and the low levels of connectivity found among them. In a context of increasing maritime traffic, fishing and recreational activities, this study provides a useful baseline to the urgent assessment of the conservation status of dolphins in New Caledonia. New Publication: Stranding patterns and feeding ecology of striped dolphins in Western Iberia (1981-2014)

Journal of Sea Research 169 .101996. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.seares.2021.101996 Abstract: The striped dolphin, Stenella coeruleoalba, is one of the most abundant cetacean species off the Western Iberian coast, however, studies on the species regarding biology, ecology, threats or conservation efforts are lacking. This study investigates stranding patterns (years 1981–2014) and diet (2002–2014) of striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) off the Portuguese mainland coast. Stranded animals were sampled along the whole coast (n = 252). Most stranded striped dolphins were recorded in the first half of the year and strandings increased over time. Analysis of stomach contents (n = 36) showed that striped dolphins in the area are mostly piscivorous (80% by number and weight of the diet), taking pelagic, meso-pelagic and demersal species. In terms of reconstructed biomass prey, sardine (Sardina pilchardus) and blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou) were the most important. Prey items revealed that both sexes forage at a range of depths (pelagic and demersal systems) in both neritic and oceanic habitats, although females feed more often in coastal waters. Moreover, diet results also indicate that striped dolphins may co-occur with other neritic cetacean species, such as the common dolphin, Delphinus delphis, thus sharing some preferred prey species. The study revealed that striped dolphins on the Iberian coast interact with coastal fisheries sharing the same target species. Hawaii Marine Animal Response (HMAR) has an immediate opening for a part-time Field Support and Outreach Lead. The position is located on the island of Oahu in the State of Hawaii. ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION. Hawaii Marine Animal Response (HMAR), is the largest Hawaii-based nonprofit marine species conservation and response organization. We operate on the islands of Oahu and Molokai with our team of dedicated volunteers, interns and staff that are supported by private donations, corporate funding, contracts and government grants. We work to achieve our mission through activity every day of the year that impacts our core objectives: (1) educate the community to grow support, (2) mitigate threats to manage and recover protected species and the ocean, and (3) save animals that need help. Thousands of times each year our field response, education, outreach, rescue, intervention, and standing support activities help us move towards our vision of Hawaii’s ocean ecosystem shared in harmony by humans and protected marine species. Through agreements and relationships with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the State of Hawaii, our work is focused on the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, endangered and threatened sea turtles, protected seabird species and the ocean ecosystem. NEEDED CORE COMPETENCIES: - Possess excellent written and oral command of the English language. - Be a person with a professional and open personal demeanor that enjoys contact with the public, volunteers and fellow staff. - Possess effective personnel management skills. - Ability to thrive in a highly dynamic environment and the flexibility to navigate changing organizational needs. - Ability to maintain a calm demeanor in stressful conditions. - Schedule flexibility and a sense of urgency that matches the unpredictable nature of marine animal response. - Some field activity involves interaction with animals that are expired and in various stages of decomposition. Candidates must be able to see and do unpleasant things without feeling sick. - Possess a team-based work ethic and attitude. - Ability to work in a virtual environment most often without direct supervision. - Have a passion for and an understanding of environmental, conservation or wildlife issues. However, the ability to detect and therefore mitigate this issue is challenging for several reasons. Fishermen are unlikely to voluntarily report bycatch due to fear of penalization or apathy towards it. While fisheries observer programs are sometimes in place to record bycatch, many fisheries have no observers. In Hawaiian waters there are no observer programs in nearshore fisheries, yet interactions with fisheries are likely the greatest threat to the endangered main Hawaiian Islands insular population of false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens). We assess spatiotemporal overlap between false killer whales and nearshore fisheries in Hawai‘i to identify fisheries and regions where interactions are most likely to occur. Interactions with fisheries was cited as the greatest threat to this population’s viability as a result of growing evidence over recent decades. We used false killer whale location data from 38 satellite tag deployments (2007-2018) and commercial fishery catch logs from a corresponding period to develop fishery overlap indices (FOIs) from a perspective that should reflect the experience of local fishermen. The area off Kona has the highest levels of fishing effort, but a low FOI, while high FOI values (up to several thousand times higher than Kona) were found off O‘ahu, Moloka‘i, Maui, Lāna‘i and the north end of Hawai‘i. Our findings provide direction for where efforts should be focused to effectively monitor and mitigate bycatch for this endangered population of false killer whales.
