Dear marmamers, My coauthors and I are pleased to announce our recent publication in the Journal of Experimental Biology. The objective in the present study was to provide novel data about metabolic demands on the Pacific walrus, which could help understand the potential impacts of environmental change. In this study we report measured metabolic rates in adult female Pacific walruses while floating in water and during stationary dives and subsurface swimming. Recent declines in summer sea ice have resulted in walruses hauling out on land where they have to travel farther to access productive benthic habitat while potentially increasing energetic costs. Despite the need to better understand the impact of sea ice loss on energy expenditure, knowledge about metabolic demands of specific behaviours in walruses is scarce. In the present study, 3 adult female Pacific walruses (Odobenus rosmarus divergens) housed in professional care participated in flow-through respirometry trials to measure metabolic rates while floating inactive at the water surface during a minimum of 5 min, during a 180 s stationary dive, and while swimming ∼90 m horizontally underwater. Metabolic rates during stationary dives (3.82±0.56 l O2 min−1) were lower than those measured at the water surface (4.64±1.04 l O2 min−1), which did not differ from rates measured during subsurface swimming (4.91±0.77 l O2 min−1). Thus, neither stationary diving nor subsurface swimming resulted in metabolic rates above those exhibited by walruses at the water surface. These results suggest that walruses minimize their energetic investment during underwater behaviours as reported for other marine mammals. Although environmental factors experienced by free-ranging walruses (e.g. winds or currents) likely affect metabolic rates, our results provide important information for understanding how behavioural changes affect energetic costs and can be used to improve bioenergetics models aimed at predicting the metabolic consequences of climate change on walruses. New paper: software comparison for harbour seal photo ID

Assessing the performance of open-source, semi-automated pattern recognition software for harbour seal (P. v. vitulina) photo ID. Mamm Biol (2021). https://doi.org/10.1007/s42991-021-00165-8 Abstract Photographic identification (photo ID) is a well-established, non-invasive, and relatively cost-effective technique to collect longitudinal data from species that can be individually recognised based on natural markings. This method has been improved by computer-assisted pattern recognition software which speed up the processing of large numbers of images. Freely available algorithms exist for a wide range of species, but the choice of software can have significant effects on the accuracy of individual capture histories and derived demographic parameter estimates. We tested the performance of three open source, semi-automated pattern recognition software algorithms for harbour seal (Phoca vitulina vitulina) photo ID: ExtractCompare, I3S Pattern and Wild-ID. Performance was measured as the ability of the software to successfully score matching images higher than non-matching images using the cumulative density function (CDF). The CDF for the top ranked potential match was highest for Wild-ID (CDF1 = 0.34–0.58), followed by ExtractCompare (CDF1 = 0.24–0.36) and I3S pattern (CDF1 = 0.02–0.3). This trend emerged regardless of how many potential matches were inspected. The highest performing aspects in ExtractCompare were left heads, whereas in I3S Pattern and Wild-ID these were front heads. Within each aspect, images collected using a camera and lens performed higher than images taken by a camera and scope. Data processing within ExtractCompare took >4 × longer than Wild-ID, and >3 × longer than I3S Pattern. We found that overall, Wild-ID outperformed both ExtractCompare and I3S Pattern under tested scenarios, and we therefore recommend its assistance in harbour seal photo ID. I am pleased to announce that a new paper in The Anthropocene Review has come out that focuses on collaborations around Traditional Ecology Knowledge within environmental science. It is titled Toward productive complicity: Applying 'traditional ecological knowledge' in environmental science. While marine mammalogy is only briefly mentioned in a couple of cases I hope that it is still of relevance to list-members. Indeed, its development has been stimulated through my participation in ECS conferences. Our intention with this article is that the discussion is of relevance for scholars involved involved in any cross-cultural knowledge collaborations. Details of the article are below. However, many environmental scientists whose research addresses environmental management, conservation, and restoration are also interested in traditional ecological knowledge, indigenous and local knowledge, and local environmental knowledge (hereafter TEK), not least because policymakers and international institutions promote the incorporation of TEK in environmental work. In this article, we examine TEK usage in peer-reviewed articles by environmental scientists published in 2020. This snapshot of environmental science scholarship includes both critical discussions of how to incorporate TEK in research and management and efforts to do so for various scholarly and applied purposes. Drawing on anthropological discussions of culture, we identify two related patterns within this literature: a tendency toward essentialism and a tendency to minimize power relationships. We argue that scientists whose work reflects these trends might productively engage with knowledge from the scientific fields that study culture and tradition. We suggest productive complicity as a reflexive mode of partnering, and a set of questions that facilitate natural scientists adopting this approach: What and/or who is this TEK for? Who and what will benefit from this TEK deployment? How is compensation/credit shared? Its exhibition, collection and research activities focus on marine biology, fisheries and marine aquariums. The foundation Deutsches Meeresmuseum includes the exhibition sites MEERESMUSEUM and OZEANEUM in Stralsund as well as the NATUREUM and the NAUTINEUM. The growing research department of the Deutsches Meeresmuseum focuses on aquatic vertebrates, European seas and collection-related research. The German Oceanographic Museum has a long-standing expertise in acoustic monitoring and the effects of underwater sound on marine vertebrates. The GEOSTOR project aims to develop a roadmap for large-scale storage of carbon in sub-seabed geological formations in the German sector of the North Sea. It will quantify geological storage potentials, identify and investigate possible storage locations, assess environmental risks, develop novel monitoring techniques, study the legal framework and estimate costs for offshore CO2 transport and storage. Part of the environmental risks are effects on the distribution, abundance and physiology of harbor porpoises by an increased need for seismic exploration as part of the monitoring of potential deposits. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Science and Education. New humpback whale song cultural evolution paper

B 377: 20200313. https://doi.org/10.1098/rstb.2020.0313 Culture presents a second inheritance system by which innovations can be transmitted between generations and among individuals. Some vocal behaviours present compelling examples of cultural evolution. Where modifications accumulate over time, such a process can become cumulative cultural evolution. The existence of cumulative cultural evolution in non-human animals is controversial. When physical products of such a process do not exist, modifications may not be clearly visible over time. Here, we investigate whether the constantly evolving songs of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) are indicative of cumulative cultural evolution. Using nine years of song data recorded from the New Caledonian humpback whale population, we quantified song evolution and complexity, and formally evaluated this process in light of criteria for cumulative cultural evolution. Song accumulates changes shown by an increase in complexity, but this process is punctuated by rapid loss of song material. While such changes tentatively satisfy the core criteria for cumulative cultural evolution, this claim hinges on the assumption that novel songs are preferred by females. While parsimonious, until such time as studies can link fitness benefits (reproductive success) to individual singers, any claims that humpback whale song evolution represents a form of cumulative cultural evolution may remain open to interpretation. New publication on North Atlantic right whales in the Gulf of St. Lawrence

Endang Species Res 46:227-251. https://doi.org/10.3354/esr01156 ABSTRACT: North Atlantic right whales *Eubalaena glacialis* are most commonly observed along the eastern seaboard of North America; however, their distribution and occupancy patterns have become less predictable in the last decade. This study explored the individual right whales captured photographically from both dedicated and opportunistic sources from 2015 to 2019 in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (GSL), an area previously understudied for right whale presence. A total of 187 individuals, including reproductive females, were identified from all sources over this period. In years when more substantial survey effort occurred (2017-2019), similar numbers of individuals were sighted (mean = 133, SD = 1.5), and dedicated mark-recapture aerial surveys were highly effective at capturing almost all of the whales estimated in the region (2019: *N* = 137, 95% CI = 135-147). A high rate of inter-annual return was observed between all 5 study years, with 95% of the animals seen in 2019 sighted previously. Capture rates indicated potential residencies as long as 5 mo, and observed behaviors included feeding and socializing. Individuals were observed in the northern and southern GSL, regions divided by a major shipping corridor. Analyses suggest that individuals mostly moved less than 9.1 km d-1, although rates of up to 79.8 km d-1 were also calculated. The GSL is currently an important habitat for 40% of this Critically Endangered species, which underscores how crucial protection measures are in this area. * INTERN COORDINATOR 2022* *DELFINI DEL PONENTE ASSOCIATION, IMPERIA, ITALY* *Cetaceans and Marine Fauna research project * *Delfini del Ponente Association is looking for an Intern Coordinator to join the team for the upcoming season.* *The project* Started in 2018, Delfini del Ponente research project is the first focused on monitoring bottlenose dolphins (*Tursiops truncatus*) occurrence and distribution in the Western Ligurian Sea. The project is structured on an annual basis, to obtain data not only on the distribution during the Summer, but also changes across different seasons. The study is already providing very interesting information about this community inside the study area, especially about its social organisation, abundance of individuals, distribution, and movements also outside the region. Moreover, our dataset includes data on several cetacean species and also about other marine fauna such as Mediterranean shearwaters (*Puffinus yelkouan)*, Scopoli’s shearwaters (*Calonectris diomedea*), Northern gannets (*Morus bassanus*), Sandwich terns (*Thalasseus sandvicensis*), sunfish (*Mola mola*) among others. Surveys are carried out in coastal waters onboard a dedicated zodiac (6 m inflatable boat) around 10 times per month. Training will focus on collecting photos for photo-ID purposes, environmental, marine traffic, geographical (GPS), and dolphins' behavioural data. Land-based surveys take place in Imperia, in 2 different locations around 8-10 times/month with the aim of collecting data on the presence/absence of dolphins, fishing boats in activity and marine birds. Fieldwork is a great opportunity to get involved and improve skills in cetaceans’ and marine biodiversity research. Both land-based and zodiac surveys are weather-dependent, and their number can change each month. Office work (6 hours per day) includes training and lessons to the interns and supervision of all the activities (photo-id work, transcription of data, data entry, QGIS work, etc...) *WHERE:* Imperia, Italy. *WHEN:* 1 March-30 October 2021 (minimum 4 months, possibly March-June; July-October). *Preference will be given to candidates that can guarantee a minimum of 4 months or a longer period. The intern coordinator will be asked to join the research team one week earlier *than the actual start of the programme*,* to gain all the necessary skills and knowledge. The Intern Coordinator will be responsible for: ● Assisting the researchers during all the research activities ● Coordinating the interns and volunteers participating in the project with the help of the Project Coordinators ● Be responsible for the cleaning schedule and maintenance of the shared apartment with the volunteers ● Assist with the training of the interns both during office work and fieldwork ● Carry on land-based surveys ● Driving the zodiac and photo-id collection ● Responsible for an own project with the data collected *Skills/qualification:* ● Minimum age of 18 ● Degree or on-going studies in Biology, Natural Sciences, Veterinary or similar (preferred) with strong motivation to work in marine mammals’ research ● Speak, read and write in fluent English ● Be adaptable and flexible as fieldwork is weather dependent ● Have prior experience in cetaceans or boat-based surveys ● Be prepared to spend many hours on a small zodiac (5-6 m) and under the sun, be able to swim and work in harsh weather conditions both in nearshore and offshore waters ● Be prepared to spend many hours in the office (generally 6 hours/day) ● Be sociable and with a positive attitude as he/she is expected to live and work in an international team ● Boat driving licence or experience in handling small boats (preferred) ● The preferred candidate should have a proven track record as a team player as the project will involve working closely with other participants but also must be able to supervise small groups of interns.
