Dear all, Please find below details of summer vacancies at our Montenegro Dolphin Research project. OUR PROJECT The Montenegro Dolphin Research is a scientific project run by DMAD - Marine Mammals Research Association. Our study is the first and only long term research study of marine mammals in Montenegrin coastal waters, with recent surveys covering the northern coastline of Albania. We aim to address questions about marine mammal abundance, distribution and behaviour, define critical habitats and investigate the impact of major threats, ranging from tourism to seismic practices. Our wider attention focuses on the promotion and implementation of awareness initiatives targeted at the local community, particularly youth and women. More details on the project can be found here: http://www.dmad.org.tr/montenegro-dolphin-research WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR We offer several volunteering and internship positions: this is a valuable opportunity for graduates, that wish to gain experience in the marine mammal research field, and undergraduates, that would like to obtain internship academic credits. It could be used to develop a scientific project for BSc and MSc thesis. However, we are also open to accept applications from anyone whose passion for marine mammals is strong and sincere. Opportunities are available *from now until September 2020*. The minimum duration of the placements is 2 MONTHS, with possible exceptions for skilled candidates. REQUIREMENTS -True interest for marine conservation, self-motivation, maturity and ability to work responsibly; -Ability to cohabit in a dynamic and multicultural environment; -Respect for the organisation's rules and willingness to follow standards and procedures; -Proven experience of working effectively as part of a team; -Fluent English (both spoken and written) and good communication skills; -Willingness to learn new software applications. -Background in marine biology and previous fieldwork experience are an advantage. FIELD WORK AND RESPONSIBILITIES -Performing land-based surveys at least three times a week, including sunrise and sunset hours; -Performing boat-based surveys once a fortnight (occasionally more if possible). -Collecting dolphins sighting and behavioural data, as well as environmental and anthropogenic data; -Operating theodolite and managing its software Pythagoras; -Data entry and analysis; -Cataloguing and matching individuals of target species for photo-ID studies via Discovery software; -Raising stakeholder awareness through conservation actions. -Promoting citizen-science activities TRAINING The Montenegro Dolphin Research team provides lectures and field work training as well as constant mentoring. One such location is in San Francisco Bay where a variety of vessel types transit a highly developed urban estuary. We analyzed vessel presence and speed across space and time using vessel data from the Marine Monitor, a vessel tracking system that integrates data from the Automatic Identification System and a marine-radar sensor linked to a high-definition camera. In doing so, we provide data that can inform collision risk to cetaceans who show an increased presence in the Bay and evaluation of the value in incorporating data from multiple sources when observing vessel traffic. We found that ferries traveled the greatest distance of any vessel type. Ferries and other commercial vessels (e.g., cargo and tanker ships and tug boats) traveled consistently in distinct paths while recreational traffic (e.g., motorized recreational craft and sailing vessels) was more dispersed. Large shipping vessels often traveled at speeds greater than 10 kn when transiting the study area, and ferries traveled at speeds greater than 30 kn. We found that distance traveled and speed varied by season for tugs, motorized recreational and sailing vessels. Distance traveled varied across day and night for cargo ships, tugs, and ferries while speed varied between day and night only for ferries. Between weekdays and weekends, distance traveled varied for cargo ships, ferries, and sailing vessels, while speed varied for ferries, motorized recreational craft, and sailing vessels. Radar-detected vessel traffic accounted for 33.9% of the total track distance observed, highlighting the need to include data from multiple vessel tracking systems to fully assess and manage vessel traffic in a densely populated urban estuary. The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Sea Otter Program is seeking enthusiastic and motivated individuals for two internship programs, 1) Sea Otter Research and 2) Sea Otter Care for June -December 2020. Research internship responsibilities include, but are not limited to, data collection from shore using radio telemetry equipment and making visual observations with spotting scopes. Interns will record daily re-sights, forage observations, and activity budget data on marked wild sea otters. Animal care internship responsibilities include, but are not limited to, daily care and feeding of ill, injured or orphaned sea otters, maintenance and cleaning of animal tanks and enclosures, and computer data entry. Interns may also assist with rescues of live-stranded otters, tracking of released otters, and administration of medication to sick otters. Qualified applicants must be able to work in a team environment, as well as independently without direct supervision, and must have good communication skills. New publication: Androstenedione and testosterone but not progesterone are potential biomarkers of pregnancy in Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) approaching parturition

Hawker & Susan Bengtson Nash Androstenedione and testosterone but not progesterone are potential biomarkers of pregnancy in Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) approaching parturition ABSTRACT: The blubber steroid hormone profiles of 52 female humpback whales migrating along the east coast of Australia were investigated for seasonal endocrine changes associated with reproduction. Individuals were randomly sampled during two stages of the annual migration: before reaching the breeding grounds (northward migration; June/July), and after departing from the breeding grounds (southward migration; September/October). Assignment of reproductive status of the sampled individuals was based on season, single-hormone ranks and multi-variate analysis of the hormonal profiles. High concentrations of progesterone (>19 ng/g, wet weight), recognised as an indicator of pregnancy in this species, were only detected in one sample. However, the androgens, testosterone and androstenedione were measured in unusually high concentrations (1.6–12 and 7.8–40 ng/g wet weight, respectively) in 36% of the females approaching the breeding grounds. The absence of a strong accompanying progesterone signal in these animals raises the possibility of progesterone withdrawal prior to parturition. As seen with other cetacean species, testosterone and androstenedione could be markers of near-term pregnancy in humpback whales. Confirmation of these androgens as alternate biomarkers of near-term pregnancy would carry implications for improved monitoring of the annual fecundity of humpback whales via non-lethal and minimally invasive methods. Monterey Bay Whale Watch Marine Mammal Photo ID Internship Opportunity Join Monterey Bay Whale Watch for an exciting research opportunity! Help collect valuable data during our Killer Whale season and Humpback Whale season on all day whale watching trips, research trips, and shorter passenger trips. Collection of data includes filling out data sheets, taking photo ID pictures, inputting data into the computer, editing wildlife videos, using a hydrophone, plus other research opportunities. Learn invaluable information on Monterey Bay and its Transient (Biggs) Killer Whales, plus several other wildlife species we may encounter! We collaborate heavily with Cascadia Research Collective and HappyWhale – a significant portion of the internship is working with Humpback Whale photo ID projects. Interns are also expected to interact with passengers, showing them educational materials and answering questions. Interns must commit to the ENTIRE Killer Whale season - April 1st - May 31st (can be extended), AND/OR for our summer season of May-September. You must be able to commit to at least two months and AT LEAST 20 hours per week. This will include 1-2 days on the boat and 1-2 days inputting data. You will be working directly with Marine Biologists, some of who have been studying Monterey Bay wildlife for several years. Interns need to be able to work long hours in variable weather conditions. All day trips are at least 8 hours, sometimes reaching more than 12 hours. Photo ID experience preferred, but not necessary. This is an unpaid position and housing is not provided. College credit can be provided in most cases. Internship is located at 84 Fisherman’s Wharf, Monterey, CA. New publication on beaked whale strandings and naval sonar in Guam and the Mariana Islands

Along with my co-authors, I'm proud to announce the publication of our recent study entitled: Co-occurrence of beaked whale strandings and naval sonar in the Mariana Islands,Western Pacific The open-access article appears in the journal Proceedings B of the Royal Society and is available at the following link: http://rspb.royalsocietypublishing.org/lookup/doi/10.1098/rspb.2020.0070 *Abstract* Mid-frequency active sonar (MFAS), used for antisubmarine warfare (ASW), has been associated with multiple beaked whale (BW) mass stranding events. Multinational naval ASW exercises have used MFAS offshore of the Mariana Archipelago semi-annually since 2006. We report BW and MFAS acoustic activity near the islands of Saipan and Tinian from March 2010 to November 2014. Signals from Cuvier’s (Ziphius cavirostris) and Blainville’s beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris), and a third unidentified BW species, were detected throughout the recording period. Both recorders documented MFAS on 21 August 2011 before two Cuvier’s beaked whales stranded on 22–23 August 2011. We compared the history of known naval operations and BW strandings from the Mariana Archipelago to consider potential threats to BW populations. Eight BW stranding events between June 2006 and January 2019 each included one to three animals. Half of these strandings occurred during or within 6 days after naval activities, and this co-occurrence is highly significant. We highlight strandings of individual BWs can be associated with ASW, and emphasize the value of ongoing passive acoustic monitoring, especially for beaked whales that are difficult to visually detect at sea. We strongly recommend more visual monitoring efforts, at sea and along coastlines, for stranded cetaceans before, during and after naval exercises. *Note Added In Proof:* After the manuscript was accepted for publication additional information was made available to the authors by the US Navy. Although the January 2019 beaked whale stranding occurred within the publicly reported dates for Exercise Sea Dragon (14–26 January 2019), the US Navy confirmed that there was no sonar usage associated with this training exercise, or elsewhere within the Mariana Islands Training and Testing area in the 6 days prior to the stranding. If this event is removed from the statistical analysis, there is a 1% probability (see electronic supplementary material, table S2) that three of eight beaked whale strandings occurred within 6 days after MFAS operations by chance. As discussed within the manuscript, the statistical analysis was limited to assessing the overlap between beaked whale strandings and known MFAS events (either via public reporting or through detection on passive acoustic devices—see figure 3). The Navy is working with NOAA to make the broader dataset, which is classified, available for further statistical analysis. *Also of interest*: An additional beaked whale near stranding occurred on the island of Rota in the Mariana Archipelago on November 21, 2019, which is not included in this study. In the waters around Guam, a major multinational naval ASW operation (Vanguard 2) began on Nov 20, 2019.

The Trumble/Usenko Labs at Baylor University (Chronology Of Ocean Life) have developed and are supported to develop analytical techniques and address questions using reconstructed lifetime chemical profiles (i.e. hormones, stable isotopes, contaminants, etc) of baleen whales. The postdoctoral scientist will work independently under the mentorship of Drs. Trumble and Usenko, and will lead in the experimentation, analysis, presentation and publication of research. They will be encouraged to apply for independent funding and present research at national and international meetings. Those with backgrounds in endocrinology, bulk and/or compound specific stable isotope analysis or statistical computing languages are encouraged to apply. The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies (IMMS) Research Internship Program is designed as a way for students interested in a career in marine science to gain valuable research experience in a real-world setting. As an intern, you will be trained in all aspects of dolphin photo-ID research as well as any other current research projects at IMMS that may involve species such as: bottlenose dolphins, sea turtles, or diamondback terrapins. Interns will also participate in other operations at IMMS including: stranding response, aquarist and reptile care, and animal care. Our goal is to give interns a well-rounded experience in a variety of areas while providing expert training and experience in marine science research. Interns must: - Commit to a minimum of 12 weeks. The internship can be extended depending on work performance - Be available to work Mon-Fri and must be available for all boat-based surveys. Some field days may fall on the weekends. - Have a strong sense of responsibility, work ethic, attention to detail, and ability to admit mistakes. - Produce high quality research efforts and exhibit strong interpersonal skills Principle Duties include: data entry, learning all research protocols, cropping and sorting photo-ID fin images, learning to use photo-ID programs such as Darwin (fin matching software) and FinBase (Microsoft Access), boat based field research (21' boat), and learn how to use ArcGIS Secondary Duties include: assisting animal care staff, attending marine mammal necropsies, responding to marine mammal and sea turtle strandings, and assisting educational staff Field Days: Interns must be able to spend many hours on the water and on shore in sometimes extreme seasonal conditions. Seasonal temperatures range from over 100 °F in summer to 30 °F in winter. Field days typically exceed eight hours and occur at least two or three times a week. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must be 18 or older and must have a genuine interest in marine research. Applicants should be actively pursuing a college degree or be a recent graduate in oceanography, marine science/biology, biology, or a related field. Previous research experience in any capacity is a plus. Applicants must be able and willing to fulfill all duties outlined for this internship program. This is an unpaid position and interns are responsible for their own housing and transportation. Once accepted, IMMS staff will assist interns in finding rooms available to rent, usually with other staff members. The deadline to apply for the summer sessions (May 4-July 24, 2020 or June 1-August 21, 2020) is March 1, 2020. Please know we are aware that our internship dates do not match up well with school end and start dates for the summer season, but we are willing to work with students to accommodate these differences.
