VOLUNTEER AND INTERN RECRUITMENT FOR THE MONTENEGRO DOLPHIN RESEARCH (SOUTH ADRIATIC SEA) OUR PROJECT The Montenegro Dolphin Research is a scientific project run by Marine Mammals Research Association (DMAD). Our study is the first and only long term research study of marine mammals in Montenegrin coastal waters, with recent surveys covering until to the central coastline of Albania. We aim to address questions about marine mammal abundance, distribution and behavior, define critical habitats and investigate the impact of major threats, ranging from tourism to seismic practices. Our wider attention focuses on the promotion and implementation of awareness initiatives targeted at the local community, particularly youth and women. WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR We offer several volunteering and internship positions: this is a valuable opportunity for graduates, that wish to gain experience in the marine mammal research field, and undergraduates, that would like to obtain internship academic credits. It could be used to develop a scientific project for BSc and MSc thesis. However, we are also open to accept applications from anyone whose love for dolphins is strong and sincere. Opportunities are available starting from July 2019. The minimum duration of the placements is 2 MONTHS, with possible exceptions for skilled candidates. REQUIREMENTS-True interest for marine conservation, self-motivation, maturity and ability to work responsibly;-Ability to cohabit in a dynamic and multicultural environment;-Respect for the organization's rules and willingness to follow standards and procedures;-Proven experience of working effectively as part of a team;-Fluent English (both spoken and written) and good communication skills;-Willingness to learn new software applications.-Background in marine biology and previous fieldwork experience are an advantage. New publication on bottlenose dolphin large-scale estimates of abundance, density and habitat preferences

Dear all, We are excited to announce the publication of our paper in *Scientific Reports*: 'Abundance estimates and habitat preferences of bottlenose dolphins reveal the importance of two gulfs in South Australia' by Kerstin Bilgmann, Gudio J. Parra, Lauren Holmes, Katharina J. Peters, Ian D. Jonsen and Luciana M. Moller Abstract Informed conservation management of marine mammals requires an understanding of population size and habitat preferences. In Australia, such data are needed for the assessment and mitigation of anthropogenic impacts, including fisheries interactions, coastal zone developments, oil and gas exploration and mining activities. Here, we present large-scale estimates of abundance, density and habitat preferences of southern Australian bottlenose dolphins (*Tursiops* sp.) over an area of 42,438km2 within two gulfs of South Australia. Using double-observer platform aerial surveys over four strata and mark-recapture distance sampling analyses, we estimated 3,493 (CV = 0.21; 95%CI = 2,327-5,244) dolphins in summer/autumn, and 3,213 (CV = 0.20; 95%CI = 2,151-4,801) in winter/spring of 2011. Bottlenose dolphin abundance and density was higher in gulf waters across both seasons (0.09-0.24 dolphins/km2) compared to adjacent shelf waters (0.004–0.04 dolphins/km2). The high densities of bottlenose dolphins in the two gulfs highlight the importance of these gulfs as a habitat for the species. Habitat modelling associated bottlenose dolphins with shallow waters, flat seafloor topography, and higher sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in summer/autumn and lower SSTs in winter/spring. Spatial predictions showed high dolphin densities in northern and coastal gulf sections. Distributional data should inform management strategies, marine park planning and environmental assessments of potential anthropogenic threats to this protected species. Research Assistant - Data Analyst (Sarasota Dolphin Research Program) The Sarasota Dolphin Research Program (SDRP) is a collaborative partnership dedicated to dolphin research, conservation, and education. It was the first systematic study of bottlenose dolphin ranging patterns, and findings of multi-decadal, multi-generational residency have set the stage for the program to continue and develop into new areas of research. Since 1989, the Chicago Zoological Society (CZS) has led the SDRP partnership, providing an administrative home for the long-term program and support for ongoing program operations, including the CZS employees who form the core program staff. Mote Marine Laboratory, where initial research was conducted during 1970-1971, has provided a base of operations on Sarasota Bay and access to laboratory facilities and infrastructure since 1992. *BACKGROUND: * The Marine Environment Research Association – AIMM, is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation founded in Portugal in 2010, focused on the research and conservation of marine species and running an ongoing study of cetaceans in southern Portugal (Algarve). First we will look at the acoustic presence of species in passive acoustic recordings made by the gliders, and compare them to recordings from stationary units deployed in deep coastal and deep shelf break locations. Then, she will focus on the vocalizations of the fin whale. This species shows spatial and temporal separation in area use between spring and winter deployments in the study area on the west coast of Vancouver Island, indicated by the dominant call type heard. Finally she will look at methods of reconciling the habitat data collected by the glider and the whale presence data, which is collected on much broader spatial scales, in hopes to identify important habitat units for sensitive species. *About the Speaker: *Rianna Burnham is an acoustics ecologist, who uses acoustics as a tool for ecological study and understanding the life histories of marine species. She completed her graduate work with the Whale Lab at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on the foraging ecology and vocalisation behaviours of whale species. She was a lead researcher in the Whale Habitat and Listening Experiment (WHaLE) project, collaboration of project teams on the east and west coast of Canada, that used acoustic technologies to mitigate acoustic disturbance and ship strike threat. New publication on spatiotemporal distribution of bearded seal vocalizations in Kongsfjorden

Polar Biol (2019). https://doi.org/10.1007/s00300-019-02514-3 Abstract In this study, we used long-term passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) to improve knowledge about the use and spatiotemporal distribution of Erignathus barbatus vocalisations. Two autonomous passive acoustic recorders were deployed between August 2014 and July 2015 in the inner and outer parts of the Kongsfjorden (Svalbard Islands, Norway) resulting in 1728 h of data recorded and 17,220 vocalisations detected. We investigated the vocalisation occurrence with respect to the presence of ice in the fjord (sea ice and glacier iceberg) and to the light cycle. The vocalisation rate varied significantly daily and monthly, and a correlation to the light and darkness turnover was shown during the period between the end of February and the first part of April. Bearded seal vocalisations, which started on 12 February and ceased on 22 June, intensified with the ice coverage peak but also continued during ice retreat, coinciding with the mating season. Additionally, a spatial displacement was highlighted from the inner to the external part of Kongsfjorden in the second part of May corresponding to the disappearance of sea ice within the fjord. This study highlights the ability of PAM to be a useful tool for both understanding abiotic and biotic processes in the marine environment, and ultimately the potential interactions between them. Oceanographic barriers, divergence, and admixture: Phylogeography and taxonomy of two putative subspecies of short‐finned pilot whale. *Molecular Ecology * https://doi.org/10.1111/mec.15107. *Abstract*: Genomic phylogeography plays an important role in describing evolutionary processes and their geographic, ecological, or cultural drivers. These drivers are often poorly understood in marine environments, which have fewer obvious barriers to mixing than terrestrial environments. Taxonomic uncertainty of some taxa (e.g., cetaceans), due to the difficulty in obtaining morphological data, can hamper our understanding of these processes. One such taxon, the short‐finned pilot whale, is recognized as a single global species but includes at least two distinct morphological forms described from stranding and drive hunting in Japan, the “Naisa” and “Shiho” forms. Using samples (n = 735) collected throughout their global range, we examine phylogeographic patterns of divergence by comparing mitogenomes and nuclear SNP loci. Our results suggest three types within the species: an Atlantic Ocean type, a western/central Pacific and Indian Ocean (Naisa) type, and an eastern Pacific Ocean and northern Japan (Shiho) type. mtDNA control region differentiation indicates these three types form two subspecies, separated by the East Pacific Barrier: Shiho short‐finned pilot whale, in the eastern Pacific Ocean and northern Japan, and Naisa short‐finned pilot whale, throughout the remainder of the species' distribution. Our data further indicate two diverging populations within the Naisa subspecies, in the Atlantic Ocean and western/central Pacific and Indian Oceans, separated by the Benguela Barrier off South Africa. This study reveals a process of divergence and speciation within a globally‐distributed, mobile marine predator, and indicates the importance of the East Pacific Barrier to this evolutionary process. Seal Rescue Ireland: Education Internship Seal Rescue Ireland (SRI) is a charity organisation which operates a busy marine animal rescue and rehabilitation centre located in Courtown, Co. Wexford. As the only facility that fully rehabilitates seals within the Republic of Ireland, SRI responds to strandings nationwide. Most reports are for young grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) and common seal (Phoca vitulina) pups found sick, injured or orphaned across the Irish coastline. In addition, SRI pursues understanding and public engagement of ocean conservation and sustainability through education, community outreach and research programmes. SRI is currently accepting applications for their Education Intern position with immediate start dates available. This high paced, full-time position is for a minimum of 12 weeks, but longer time commitments are encouraged. After completion of initial training, interns who excel may be invited to stay longer and offered higher levels of responsibility. Reports to: Operations Manager Job Summary: The Education Intern will assist with everything related to the various education programs which cater to children as young as 2 years old all the way up to presentations geared towards adults. The intern will need to be able to plan, develop and deliver educational programs, activities, games, and materials which are tailored to each group’s specific needs, interests and curriculum. They will plan/attend community outreach events, school visits, birthday parties, fundraisers and networking events to promote awareness of SRI’s mission of marine conservation. They will also be trained to give daily educational tours of the Centre as well as providing customer care in the gift shop. There may be some involvement in assisting in the husbandry care and maintenance of rehabilitation animals if interested. Requirements: Applicants must have a background and dedicated interest in areas of study such as Zoology, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Conservation, Education, Oceanography, Child Development or related field. Background knowledge of marine mammals is preferred but not required. Applicants must be organized, personable, self-motivated, resourceful and have experience facilitating events and lessons for large groups. They will be expected to manage staff and volunteers appropriately. Great networking and public speaking skills are a must. Interns will be expected to maintain a high level of professionalism and diplomacy whenever they are representing Seal Rescue Ireland. We are looking for a candidate that works well as a team and is comfortable around individuals of all ages, ability levels, and backgrounds. Finally, applicants must possess the ability to adapt to an ever-changing work environment, and be available to work nights, weekends and holidays. With rolling start dates year around, this high paced, full-time position is for a minimum of 12 weeks, but longer time commitments are encouraged. After completion of initial training, interns who excel may be invited to stay longer and offered higher levels of responsibility with the potential for compensation through living expenses. Reports to: Animal Care Manager Job Summary: This position provides the intern with a well rounded experience of both hands-on marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation work, and promoting public understanding of marine conservation as a whole. The candidate’s time will be split in half between assisting in the daily care of the animals and hospital operations, and providing educational tours to the public, assisting with fundraising projects, and assisting with administrative duties. The variation of responsibilities provide interns with excellent understanding of what it takes to successfully operate the many different aspects of a wildlife charity. Additionally, each intern gets the opportunity to independently plan one fundraiser project, to learn leadership and organisational skills. Interns that excel may be offered additional levels of responsibility to pursue specialized skill sets. Requirements: For consideration, applicants must have a background in areas of study such as Pre-Vet, Biology, Zoology, Marine Biology, Conservation Biology, Environmental Science or other animal related field. Applicants must be able to follow written and oral instruction, possess effective communication skills, and be passionate about marine animals and their environment. Applicants should be agile with a good sense of balance in order to maneuver around enclosures, and must be physically fit and able to lift 25 kg. Applicants must possess the ability to adapt in a fast paced, ever changing environment and have a positive, purposeful attitude. They must be willing to work long hours, nights, weekends and holidays. Previous animal care and handling experience as well as public speaking skills are preferred, however interns will receive training to develop these skills. Duties Include: - Daily animal diet preparations and routine cleaning of enclosures and work areas. - Assist with rescue and release of stranded animals. - Take shifts overseeing the stranding hotline and coordinate seal rescue and transport. - Assist in the care of seals (feeding, restraining, medical treatment, daily care). - Help ensure that the clinical areas are stocked, hygienic and prepared to receive animals. - Maintain and update medical records. - Provide assistance to management and rehabilitation staff as needed. - Assist with fundraisers and educational events. - Assist with clerical duties and office work as needed - Participate in educational talks and tours. - Complete and arrange personal fundraiser project in aid of the center.
