This seminar, titled *Diverse Responses and Emerging Risks for Marine Mammals in a Rapidly Changing Arctic*, will be presented by Donna Hauser, a Research Assistant Professor at the International Arctic Research Center, University of Alaska Fairbanks. Donna studies marine ecology and has examined the habitat use, distribution, and behavior of marine mammals for over 15 years. *Seminar Abstract:* The rapid and pervasive loss of Arctic sea ice has several potential impacts to ice-associated marine mammals. Declines in sea ice cover are also occurring in concert with expanding anthropogenic activities that may have compounding effects on Arctic marine ecosystems. This talk will examine intersecting issues of recent sea ice loss, Arctic marine mammal responses, and new anthropogenic risks associated with an increasingly navigable Arctic. Dr. Hauser will provide several case studies to illustrate how changes in the timing and extent of sea ice cover affect distribution, migration timing, and foraging behavior of two Pacific Arctic populations of beluga whales. Results suggest diverse and flexible responses by belugas in the face of rapidly changing sea ice conditions, which are in line with other emerging trends from the Pacific Arctic region. Second, she will discuss a recent vulnerability assessment of 80 populations of seven Arctic marine mammal species to vessels in the increasingly ice-free Northwest Passage and Northern Sea Route, which quantified the heterogeneity of risk across species, populations, and regions. Finally, these results will be discussed in the context of ongoing conversations about the future resilience of Arctic marine mammals in changing sea ice ecosystems. **Registration is required for this event.** This event is a brown-bag lunch. Blue whale behavioral responses to military sonar - new publication

High-resolution movement and passive acoustic data were obtained from non-invasive archival tags (n=42) while surface positions were obtained with visual focal follows. Controlled exposure experiments (CEEs) were used to obtain direct behavioral measurements before, during, and after simulated and operational military mid-frequency active sonar (MFAS), pseudorandom noise (PRN), and controls (no noise exposure). For a subset of deep-foraging animals (n=21), active acoustic measurements of prey were obtained and used as contextual covariates in response analyses. To investigate potential behavioral changes within individuals as a function of controlled noise exposure conditions, two parallel analyses of time-series data for selected behavioral parameters (e.g., diving, horizontal movement, feeding) were conducted. This included expert scoring of responses according to a specified behavioral severity rating paradigm and quantitative change-point analyses using Mahalanobis distance statistics. Both methods identified clear changes in some conditions. More than 50% of blue whales in deep feeding states responded during CEEs, while no changes in behavior were identified in shallow-feeding blue whales. Overall, responses were generally brief, of low to moderate severity, and highly dependent on exposure context such as behavioral state, source-to-whale horizontal range, and prey availability. Response probability did not follow a simple dose-response model based on received exposure level. These results, in combination with additional analytical methods to investigate different aspects of potential responses within and among individuals, provide a comprehensive evaluation of how free-ranging blue whales responded to mid-frequency military sonar.

Abstract: Animals use diverse feeding strategies to capture and consume prey, with many species switching between strategies to accommodate different prey. Many marine animals exhibit behavioral flexibility when feeding to deal with spatial and temporal heterogeneity in prey resources. However, little is known about flexibility in the feeding behavior of many large marine predators. Here, we documented the feeding behavior and kinematics of the critically endangered Hawaiian monk seal (*Neomonachus schauinslandi, *n=7) through controlled feeding trials. Seals were fed multiple prey types (e.g., night smelt, capelin, squid, and herring) that varied in size and shape to examine behavioral flexibility in feeding. Hawaiian monk seals primarily used suction feeding (91% of all feeding trials) across all prey types, but biting, specifically pierce feeding, was also observed (9% of all feeding trials). Suction feeding was characterized by shorter temporal events, a smaller maximum gape and gape angle, and a fewer number of jaw motions than pierce feeding; suction feeding kinematic performance was also more variable compared to pierce feeding. Seals showed behavioral flexibility in their use of the two strategies. Suction feeding was used most frequently when targeting small to medium sized prey and biting was used with increasing frequency on larger prey. The feeding kinematics differed between feeding strategies and prey types, showing that Hawaiian monk seals adjusted their behaviors to particular feeding contexts. Hawaiian monk seals are opportunistic marine predators and their ability to adapt their feeding strategy and behavior to specific foraging scenarios allows them to target diverse prey resources. A range of machine-learning / pattern recognition tools are currently adapted and will be refined iteratively during the project time, while acoustic data and associated behavioral observations are additionally collected from a sailboat. On short notice there is an availability for an additional researcher, preferably with a background in bioacoustics, and behaviour research. Experience in orca research is a plus, but not required. The purpose of this positions is to collaborate in data collection and preparing the material for later computer analyses, including but not limited to photo IDs, behavior observations, processing video documentation (generate "ground-truth" data for the ongoing data-analysis). Prior field experience with photo-ID and boat handling is preferred, but not required. Since we will be living and working closely, applicants must work well in teams and have a positive attitude, while living and working comfortably in a sailing vessel with a small team. We do encourage you to use the expedition and the resulting data for an academic work including master/Ph.D work. The project will provide a certain amount of subsidiary for a senior researcher and a junior researcher respectively (detailed information is available upon request). The expedition is scheduled from May - September 2018. A minimum is a 6 week commitment, and preference will be given to those who are able to stay longer. The research vessel is equipped with an electric drive and hull mounted and towed arrays for spatial recognition. Everybody on board also assists with vessel operations, including day-to-day activities such as taking turns in cooking, cleaning and vessel maintenance. This project follows the open science principles, open source, open data, open access, and aims to make resulting tools available to the whole research community. The editors of Sirenews, the IUCN newsletter for the Sirenia Specialist Group, wish to invite authors to submit short articles related to sirenian research and conservation to sirenews(a)sea2shore.org.
